Captain Sensible – Gameweek 34

Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders, arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

There’s no surprise to see Eden Hazard as the runaway leader of this week’s poll. The Chelsea winger – who has earned a minimum six points in all but one of his last seven – has moved away from the chasing pack at the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings and is backed by over 59% as the Blues face up to Arsenal and Leicester.

Raheem Sterling (15%), Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho (both 3%) find a place in our top five as Liverpool prepare for trips to West Brom and Hull. Sterling has a goal and assist in the last two Gameweeks, whilst Coutinho has netted in two of the last three in all competitions, though Henderson is clearly the form player – providing a goal or assist in five of the last six league outings. Their opponents’ recent defensive form bodes well for the Merseysiders – West Brom had shipped ten goals in three prior to their 2-0 win at Palace, whilst Hull have conceded eight times in their last three, suggesting the latter two, in particular, look real armband differentials in light of their lack of votes.

Sergio Aguero is the highest ranked single Gameweek player. Having notched three times since a shift to 4-4-1-1, the Argentine (3% backing) is in fine form ahead of the visit of a Villa side with two shut-outs in eight under new boss Tim Sherwood. Harry Kane has also collected 3% of votes as Spurs travel to Southampton but with their hosts earning 11 clean sheets at St Mary’s already, the youngster faces a tough task to justify any armband investment this time out.

Two goals and a pair of assists earn Jamie Vardy 2% backing as Leicester prepare to face Burnley and Chelsea. Whilst their trip to Turf Moor holds more optimism, the Foxes have racked up ten goals in their last four and Vardy looks a key figure in their attack as Nigel Pearson prepares to take the match to the league leaders.

Further down, Branislav Ivanovic and Cesc Fabregas hover around the 1% mark. The Serbian’s propensity for returns at both ends of the pitch has seen him deliver at least five points in seven of his last nine appearances, whilst a goal and two assists in the last four has helped Fabregas return to form after a barren winter spell. With four double-figure hauls apiece this season, the duo have shown they are more than capable of explosive returns.

What's this mumbling about Cesc likely to miss his match against Chelsea?

that's the main problem i now have...

Vardy will prob make it (altho agree not worth the risk to bring him in), meaning that Ulloa's game time isnt guaranteed...

I might actually have to get N/Doye...

Ulloa not guaranteed 90 regardless it seems. He does like a flick on though.

That's better. Leicester strikers have a very good chance of doing absolutely nothing against Chelsea..and Hull not much better against Pool. They may as well be SGW players.

yep I did, I'm looking at the season ticker now and while Toby's fixtures do look alright, technically there could be 0 cleansheets among them..maybe only vs Sunderland..

I might go with Duff simply because he's cheap as chips and can sub in for GW36 (plus rest of matches aren't half bad either)

but I'm not sure for the other..was tempted to try to fit Smalling in but could get Stones

part of me would want to sell Azpi before Liverpool anyways

I don't think it's *highly* unlikely.. if she thought it was just a conversation between friends maybe she said it knowing he was punting on Vardy, or trying to get information from her about Vardy.. It would be too easy.

I wouldn't like to come back and explain that to FFS though, so he must think it is serious.

    Third time lucky hopefully.

What do people think about my WC team? Limit funds means I've had to cut back on some of the luxury options, so having Azpilicueta over Terry etc. and I now have 0.2 in the bank.

    Courtois
    Azpilicueta Skrtl Morgan
    Ramsey Henderson Hazard Sterling Albrighton
    Aguero Benteke

    Gilks - Giroud Duff Bruce

For GW36, I'd be doing Courtois > Ospina and transfer Sterling out, which would give me 9.7 to spend, and I'd probably bring in Silva.

Don't like Courtois myself. I'd get someone cheaper and upgrade Azpi to Terry/Ivan.

I don't really like all the ultra cheap players. Try going with Ospina/Schmeichel now. That will save 0.5.

Albrighton can then become a more useful cheapie mid, like Cork. That will cost 0.1.

Duff can then become a useful playing defender like Vlaar who has good fixtures in 35, 36, 38. That will cost 0.4.

You end up with a better team at the same cost and a FT saved. If you want 3 Chelsea you could also take Oscar or Willian for Ramsey this week and change to Ramsey next week. Sterling to Mata or Henderson to Fellaini (or even Larsson ready for DGW) in 36 would then work. Something like that.

I wouldn't want to rely on Courtois for the rest of the season.. I'd worry Cech might make some appearances.

Everything else looks good to me though!

Yeah, he'll be taken off 5 minutes early to do a lap of honour after his double hattrick.

In my opinion, if you're chasing a medium sized lead then this is a bad gameweek for a captaincy 'punt'. Reason is that the standard captain has two chances to come good, so it takes more for your gamble to come off than in a single gameweek.

The upside is obviously much higher, so if you're chasing a massive lead then by all means go ahead. But if not, then I'm almost sure that a single gameweek is better for going with a different captain.

With Hazard's vein of form and the Zidane comments about him and his 5mag appearance and whatnot, I think it's poor decision to try and find a better alternative. If he does come good, that could be the end of your mini-league pursuit as a previously medium-sized lead becomes massive.

Or you could gamble on N'Doye.

I'm chasing an 87 point lead.

      Captain Ivan?
      or
      Captain Hazard?
      or
Captain Costa with cojones of steel?

With this Vardy rumour i'm quite tempted to gamble on Nugent... if he plays he's the standout Leicester option

This is pointless. Nugent is certainly doubtful whilst Vardy is just rumoured by one guy.

I'm not too keen on the idea of having Vardy anyway. Or Ulloa. I'll make a drunken decision in about 7 hours i'm sure

Can't wait to see my rivals face tomorrow. Cheers guys.
