Spot the Differential – Gameweek 34

There are two double Gameweek players among our Differential picks this afternoon, with Leicester’s veteran Argentine and Hull City’s January signing catching our attention. Manchester City’s marauding left-back completes our trio of potential difference-makers.

Esteban Cambiasso

Leicester’s recent reversal of fortunes can, in part, be attributed to the productivity of Esteban Cambiasso. The former Inter Milan stalwart has delivered the goods when the Foxes needed it most, tallying one goal and two assists during their trio of successive wins. With the attack-minded Riyad Mahrez losing out to Marc Albrighton on the right flank of late, Cambiasso arguably represents the strongest route into Leicester’s midfield. Indeed, over the last three Gameweeks, Cambiasso has engineered eight opportunities for his team-mates – only two midfielders have managed more.

Nigel Pearson’s men now embark on a double Gameweek (bur, CHE) that presents further chance to ascend the table. Although Burnley have only conceded six goals in as many outings, they’ll doubtless leave gaps at the back searching for their first goal in five matches – at this point, Sean Dyche’s side can’t afford to sit tight and need to go on the offensive. Having scored ten times in the last four, Pearson’s side will be optimistic of breaching Chelsea’s backline as they go on the offensive to secure their survival. Another real benefit to be gained from drafting in Cambiasso as a budget fifth midfielder is the Foxes’ favourable run-in. The East Midlanders cap off their campaign with three winnable home ties (NEW, SOU, QPR) and a trip to struggling Sunderland in Gameweek 37.

Dame N’Doye

Sourcing Hull City coverage for their double Gameweek (cry, LIV) is far from straightforward, but lead striker Dame N’Doye could be a profitable punt – particularly when you consider that the majority of managers are snubbing the Tigers’ budget options in favour of Leicester’s. The 5.5-priced frontman made a quick start upon his switch to the KC Stadium in the January transfer window, scoring in his first three starts. Goals have dried up since then, though the underlying stats still impress – N’Doye has fired 14 attempts over his last four matches, that’s the same number as Harry Kane, and a tally bettered by only three forwards.

Hull’s first test is a trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday, which N’Doye will no doubt relish after watching an out-of-form West Bromwich Albion side best the London club 2-0 last weekend. Granted, the Eagles’ offense has clicked into gear of late – tallying 11 goals in four matches – yet their rearguard failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous nine. While a home tie against Liverpool next Tuesday should prove a stern test of N’Doye’s credentials, the Reds’ back line revealed a vulnerability when they were breached four times by the Gunners in their last match-up. Recruiting N’Doye does come with the caveat that Hull’s fixtures beyond the double (ARS, BUR, tot, MUN), on paper, appear to offer slim pickings but as a one-week punt, he could be worth considering.

Aleksandar Kolarov

In light of Gael Clichy being ruled out of Manchester City’s home encounter with Aston Villa, Aleksandar Kolarov has a free run at the left-back berth again this weekend. The Serbian defender is set to be handed consecutive starts in the Sky Blues’ rearguard, having been recalled to the side for their 2-0 victory over West Ham United last time out. Famed for his free-kick prowess and long-range shooting, Kolarov posed a significant attacking threat against the Hammers, attempting three shots and executing six crosses throughout the 90 minutes. Furthermore, amongst defenders, only Robert Huth (by eight to seven) has produced more shots in his last four matches than the Serbian.

Despite struggling for form, City have notched clean sheets in four of the past eight Gameweeks. Their run-in (AVL, tot, QPR, swa, SOU) looks conducive to further shut-outs, too, with three winnable home ties and away fixtures against teams they typically dominate. Price at 5.7, Kolarov also carries the benefit that he’s the cheapest route into the champions’ defence and the most likely full-back to support the likes of Sergio Aguero and Jesus Navas on the counter. If Clichy remains sidelined for the run-in, Kolarov could prove a fine differential.

    One final question guys!

    A) Duff, Baird + Cambiasso - Play Duff GW36 Hull away.
    or
    B) Duff, Vlaar + Albrighton - Play Vlaar GW36 West Ham home.

A, would rather have Cambiasso over Albrighton.

But, I would rather have McShane over Duff. You also have to take into consideration that Duff is 37 years old and near retirement. I wouldn't be surprised if Micheal Keane, (who Dyche recently signed) took his spot which he had held onto for a long time. Danny ings is currently on a 6 hour goal drought and Burnley have only scored 1 goal in their last 6 games. Hence, I would pick McShane.

Shameless re-post, got bottomed on last article 🙁
Alright guys, just wanted to get any final thoughts on this possible WC team:

    Schmeichel
    Terry - Moreno - Morgan
    Hazard - Sterling - Hendo - Albrighton
    Aguero - Costa - Tekkers

    Subs: Ospina, Mata, McShane, PvA

Money ITB for Sterling and Costa to Sanchez and Giroud these next 2 GW's.
    Thoughts? Too risky?

🙂 Costa is a risky pick (better Chelsea options available).
Get skrtel for Moreno if you can And I'd rather have N'doye in my team for this week than Benteke.

Love the Mata pick. Would have gone for it myself if it wasn't for the Arsenal DGW. I picked Ramsey instead. Maybe you want to reconsider that?

Duff ovre McShane. Better fixtures at the same price.

      The rest looks fabulous.

Thanks for the kinds words Doc, much appreciated 🙂 Aye I've considered the triple Arsenal attack I just feel like Arsneal defense is too good up IMO. Mata has a good change to outscore Ramsey/Ozil with great fixtures til the end of the season, I also wouldn't be captaining the third Arsenal players, so it's reflectively risk averse tbh.

I would get Pants over Ospina and get 3 ARS attackers for the double. Replace Mata with Ramsey if you're benching him.

Please rate my wildcard team for this week! Trying to catch up to rivals who are 60 points ahead in my mini league. They've already used their wildcards though but it doesnt stop them from getting 7 or 8 players for the DGW, so need to make sure I have some edge even if its 1 player more. Plus I get the premium picks because of the WC.

    Schmeichel (Pantilimon)
    Ivanovic Skrtel Schlupp (PvA, McShane)
    Hazard Fabregas Sterling Coutinho Silva
    Aguero Vardy (Kane)

This is the WC team ATM:

      Courtois (Myhill)
      Terry Moreno Schlupp(PVA, Duff)
      Silva Coutinho Sterling Hazard Albrighton
      Aguero Vardy (Giroud)

I'm not sure of a few things:

      1. Silva + Courtois or Fabregas + Any other keeper

      2. Go for Albrighton (benched Giroud)
or go for N'Doye and then bring in Giroud next week.

Any other comments on the team are welcome 🙂

I personally think Courtois is a waste of money. Might not play last games if the league is wrapped up so Mou will let Cech play.

        1. Fabs + Get Schmeichel/Pants for good rotation/ 2 DGWs
        2. Keep Kane and wait on Gru. Might be rotated with Welbz for DGW.

        Are you on WC?

If so, you are taking way too many punts (N'Doye, Ulloa, Costa - ALL RISKS!)

I would personally be going Kasper and Pants in goal.

Front line should be Aguero - Vardy - 1 Punt (if you'd like)

        Rest are standard.

Reckon Murray will top score this week but can't take the armband off hazard. Scared of the megadrop if hazard has success.

Which do you think scores highest in GW36?

    A) Giroud (SWA) or
    B) Costa (LIV)

I expect most will say Giroud, but if CHE have the title wrapped up by then and Costa is in the hunt for the golden boot, perhaps CHE will let loose and Costa is the better bet?

Now that is a great profile pic!!

Have to go with Giroud. Costa is still a gamble. They may shut him down for the season.

Thinking about locking this in, final thoughts?

    Schmeichel (Pantilimon)
Ivan | Terry | Skrtel (Koscielny) (PvA)
    Haz (C) | Sterling | Hendo | Silva | Cambiasso
    Kun | Kane | Vardy

1mil itb. I think that having Kosc might be a nice little differential as I'm expecting some CS's with their remaining fixtures, and he has a good chance of bonus + a goal threat.

    Plan:
    GW35: Save FT
GW36, Ivan -> form defender (max 4.7), Vardy -> Giroud
GW37: Sterling -> form Arsenal mid (except Sanchez - too expensive)

Gives me 9 DGWers this week and 5 lined up without a hit for DGW37. Only remaining question really is whether to go with Panti or Davis as my 2nd keeper?

Hendo isn't the problem. I just prefer 3 ARS attackers for the DGW since I don't see a CS in either matches..

          1. Geordienufc1
            • 10 Years
            9 years, 9 days ago

Ahh but Kosc isn't just relevant for GW37. The fact that I am getting him in now means he has hul and SWA in the next 2 following the double, both of which Arsenal has a good chance of keeping a CS in. Even if Arsenal don't keep a cleanie in the double I still think the combined points of GW35-37 will see him come out ahead of a 3rd arsenal option (E.g. Ozil) and that option's placeholder.

Obviously there's a strong degree of speculation by both of us, but I suppose we'll have to wait and see 😛

            Best of luck 🙂

I think you'll be wanting replacements for Murray and Eriksen in particular after this GW. I'd consider doing Eriksen -> Sterling this week, even for another hit.

          My apologies - I hadn't noticed Mignolet.

That changes things - I don't think there is anyone I would remove Eriksen for another hit for. That being said, I still do think he should be a priority removal following this GW.

          Good luck mate 🙂

I asked this earlier in the week, and didn't really get a satisfying answer. But I think all you have to do to find your evidence is simply look at the player's history, both recent and less so, to find your answer.

Albrighton could work out, and if I knew he was going to play the next 2 games I'd perhaps consider him. But on balance I think Cambiasso offers greater security of starts and goal potential, as adjudicated on the basis of recent returns, and thus would be my pick.

Sorry mate - not the answer you probably wanted 😛
