The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Pardew’s Palace

In our latest article for members, we analyse the revival of Crystal Palace under Alan Pardew.

Arriving from Newcastle midway through the campaign, the former Eagles player steered his side to tenth spot in the table with a series of attacking displays that transformed their fortunes in the final third.

We sift through the season data to assess just how Pardew’s tenure impacted on the performance of the Palace squad, focusing on their output in terms of creativity and goal threat as we seek to identify would-be targets for the new campaign.

Newcastle are closing in on a deal to sign QPR striker Charlie Austin, who is keen to join the club, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.

The R's front man is currently away on international duty with England and a fee is yet to be agreed between the two clubs.

However, Newcastle are confident are getting their man as they believe St James' Park is his preferred destination this summer.

Last season there were good options for forwards...if the trend remains the same next season everyone will have problem as Aguero will be a household name and everyone will look for cheap strikers to go along...so I think strikers priced between 8 to 10.5 will be selected by very dew teams.

Last season was easy because many premium strikers didn't perform.
Rooney was in midfield, Costa was on and off. Sturridge, RVP, Falcao didn't live up to their price tags

I think a clarification to all as to what the vague plan behind price changes is would help in this respect. If they're not going to be important then get rid, if they are going to be important then make bargain basement searching worthwhile for the casual

Walcott should to. In any event, makes things more interesting if they are. Particularly Wally. I'd think that Sanchez's price must come down if he's listed as a forward.

Sanchez finished the season as the 3rd most expensive player (11.6), albeit started it as tied 5th most expensive (10.5), and the expectation is that he'd be valued at 11.5 next season. However, had he been listed as a forward this season, supposing his bonus points had stayed the same, he'd have scored 179 points, and 5.1ppg, which would be 9th best in the league. Not bad, of course, but price not over 10.0 for sure? E.g. Giroud scored 187 points last season and started this season with price 8.5.

His price should fall a tad if reclassified but I doubt FPL would see it that way.

Don't get too excited about reclassification of midfielders to forwards. I have looked at a couple of other teams in that 2014 archive page - there are several players listed as forwards there who have always been midfielders in FPL, e.g. Hazard, Walters, Arnautovic

Well, they will never list Gerrard, Yaya, Özil, Herrera, Fabregas (unless he moves back to the false 9 position for good), Ramsey or Cazorla as a forward. It suffices to make the real wide forwards and support strikers forwards, there's still plenty of players in the midfield bracket.

Some of those that put the strikers to shame actually, very often, have an avg position further up the pitch than the strikers of their respective teams. Sanchez and Hazard being the ones who do that most often. Reclassifying them based on that would be fair enough...sad, but fair.

This, there are kind of like two tiers within the midfield classifications.

If you reclassify wingers as forwards then you better reclassify attacking mids as forwards as well. Personally think it's nonsense.

Just for that I am reclassifying you as a forward 😉

No surprises there. Walters & Arnautović have actually been forwards in the past...

I sort of expect Walcott to be listed as a forward, that would make sense. Not sure Sánchez should be though.

Mmmm...Just seen the Mourinho interview about Falcao. No doubt in my mind that he wants him.

Think the deal is already done. Wouldn't be speaking this way about a player from a non-rival team otherwise.

Bit odd that one, don't think an attacking mid is what they need.

All they need is a tank def mid and a solid defender... and I am worried they will buy everything else... 😛

I want to see something official first. The stories/rumours started with a Brazilian journalist telling someone from ESPN. Excellent player though.

Is anyone watching the Spain vs Costa Rica game?

Did you hear the commentator say that Joel Campbell is joining Deportivo La Corun(~)a?

Liverpool reject a £25m(+ £5m) bid for Raheem Sterling from Manchester City.

    So...it begins.

I'd have my doubts tbh. Think he left Roma too early, should've stayed another year.

Peter Beardsley, one of my all time favs. Lord knows how many assists he got too but he'd be fantasy gold and no mistake 🙂

Micah has agreed terms with Aston Villa. I was hoping he'd end up at a team with a better defense but i still hope he's going to be a nice FPL option. Price predictions? 4.5M? 5.0?
