Scout Report – Cedric Soares

Following hot on the heels of Juanmi’s move to St Mary’s Stadium, Sporting Lisbon right-back Cedric Soares penned a four-year deal with Southampton on June 18, amid competition from Stoke City.

Speaking on their latest recruit, Saints’ director of football Les Reed revealed that long-term target Soares will be invaluable as the club fight on multiple fronts next term:

“Cedric represents a quality addition to our squad, and is another player with a desire and hunger to succeed. We have been following Cedric’s progress for some time and felt now was the time to make our move. While there was competition from other Premier League clubs we were confident we would prove to be an attractive option for such an ambitious player. We have now signed two exciting talents early in the window and will continue in our pursuit of Premier League success and our European journey.”

Soares also took time out to discuss his move, with the defender relishing the opportunity to make his mark in the Premier League:

“I joined this club because I believe we can do better and better every year. Everyone knows that the Premier League is a very, very good league – and maybe the best one in the world – so for me it’s a pleasure to be here, but even more of a pleasure to be in Southampton. Southampton is a big, big club in England and is very respected. It’s a club with a lot of history and, for me, it’s very important to play for a big club. I think this is a very good move.”

The History

Soares was born in Singen, Germany but moved to Portugal (the native country of his parents) when he was two years old. At just eight years of age, Soares was integrated into Sporting Lisbon’s youth system, where he remained until the 2010/11 Primeira Liga season. In May of that season, Soares was handed his debut for the senior squad – a 1-0 home league defeat to Vitoria de Setubal. He went on to make four more appearances during the campaign, notching one assist in the process.

To further his development, Sporting sent the right-back on loan to another top-flight outfit, Académica de Coimbra, for the 2011/12 season. While there, he was part of the side that bested his parent club, Sporting, in the Portuguese Cup Final, sealing Académica’s first Taca de Portugal trophy since 1939. Upon his return to Lisbon, Soares became a more regular fixture in the first team throughout the following three seasons, tallying two goals and 11 assists across 89 appearances in all competitions.

On the international stage, Soares accrued a remarkable 72 caps across six levels of Portugal’s youth system before making the step up to the senior squad in 2014. The attacking full-back managed a single assist for the U21 side and has since gone to earn four caps for the full squad.

The Prospects

Soares’ move to Southampton is widely expected to pave the way for their incumbent right-back, Nathaniel Clyne, to complete a £15 million trade to Liverpool or Manchester United. The Merseysiders’ opening £10 million offer was rebuffed last month, yet the Saints are said to be resigned to losing the English defender in the coming weeks.

In an ideal situation for Fantasy managers, Clyne’s proposed switch to Anfield would occur after the player lists are released, thus reducing Soares’ starting price by virtue of him being the “back-up” right-back in their squad. Such a scenario could see him priced around 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, though if that doesn’t transpire, a price of 5.5 or even 6.0 looks likely, putting him in line with the likes of Ryan Bertrand and Jose Fonte, who are both due price hikes following strong 2014/15 campaigns.

Soares recorded just two goals for Sporting Lisbon in 94 outings, yet 12 assists over that period highlights his attacking potential. In terms of frequency of assists throughout their careers, the Portugal international trumps Clyne, with his average of one assist every 671 minutes bettering the Englishman’s rate of one every 802 minutes.

Certainly, having racked up 15 clean sheets in each of the last two seasons, Southampton’s backline is likely to arrive on our radars once again. Furthermore, their favourable start to the season (new, EVE, wat, NOR, wba, MUN, SWA) encourages investment in their defensive ranks.

Of the four home ties that Koeman’s troops embark on before their trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 8, the Manchester United clash appears the toughest on paper – although Southampton defeated Louis van Gaal’s outfit 1-0 in their last meeting. Given that the Saints boasted the joint-best clean sheet record (11) at home last term, this bodes well for these early-season exchanges as Koeman looks to take advantage of the fixtures and set the standard for another impressive campaign.

The likely departure of Clyne and the impact on his own price tag will be pivotal to Soares’ potential as a Fantasy asset. In addition, Fantasy managers will also be monitoring the valuation of loan keeper Maarten Stekelenburg, signed just 24-hours ago. He could well trump Soares to emerge as the most budget-friendly defensive option at St Mary’s.

Just phoned Sky to leave as I was thinking of going to Virgin and ended up getting a cracking deal : half price tv for 12 months( Sky sports plus entertaint package ( Discovery etc) Fibre optic broadband, sky talk line rental with anytime calls, multi room and HD package all for £60 pound per month, will go up to £90 odd after 12 month contract but I can cancel after the 12 months, so it might be worth giving them a call and saying you wish to leave if your already with them 🙂

        The Pantilimon Debate

It seems as if Pantilimon is a firm favourite for chosen goalkeeper, with many pointing out that SUN keepers would be top in the GK stats (CHE first on 159 and WBA equalling SUN on 154). Of course his saves and Dick Advocaat’s arrival have helped massively but 5.0mil for a near relegation keeper with no rotation seems crazy. PvA seems like a better prospect with attacking returns and doubling up on SUN seems very risky. I agree that he is a great prospect, but there must be other options to be considered.

        Stekelenburg

Southampton have reasonably nice early fixtures and with Forster out, Stekelenburg looks set to come in at hopefully a reasonable price. Southampton kept 7 cs from the first 11 games last year, only conceding 5 and Forster gaining 51 points in the process. With Southampton’s European venture, the general fitness of the squad should also be better than most premier league teams, hopefully meaning a better start to the season.

        WBA

WBA keepers would have scored the same as SUN keepers. Also, with Foster out, Myhill seems a cheapish option for the start. Admittedly, no one likes to force transfers upon themselves and more monitoring of the foster situation would be needed. Also, since Tony Pulis’ arrival, WBA kept 10 cs from 18 games. That ratio is outstanding and Pulis has proved this multiple times now.

        BOU/NOR Rotation

It’s been noted that the bigger sides tend to not keep as many clean sheets earlier on in the season meaning a stronger case to maximise save points from lower teams. Admittedly this rotation seems shaky but there are many others that should be considered. This rotation will hopefully be 9.0m and the first 8 fixtures read as AVL sun STK LEI BOU SUN whu/stk WAT.

Of course, without prices this is all meaningless and with everyone’s prediction of prices I might go for Pantilimon myself but am I missing something about how well liked he is as a prospect?

I think your first sentence said it all. He would've been the highest scoring GK last season if he'd played every game, for 4.5m, and they've gotten better under Dick.

Unless hes improved a lot recently, the problem with Stekelenberg is that he isn't very good. And with it looking like 50% of the defence in front of him changing, as well as defensive midfielders, we cant be 100% sure yet that Southampton will be as good defensively this season.

3/1 isn't a crazy return in any case and to think that you'll only get less than your initial stake in money, it's an awful offer.

Okay. Guess it's taken for granted that they'll win something. Can't blame them, I expect that too. But it's still not crazy offer like the ones you get from Paddy: Brazil 22/1 to win the Copa. That you can make some money with.

And anyway, that's not the same as resting him for the first weeks of the PL, as even if Sanchez played the final, that's 4 July, and PL starts 8 August, so he'll be back in the squad before PL starts, even if not in the perfect fit.

I'm not so sure to be honest. I have played this game for years, Ive seen many players given an extended break if they are away on international duty. I fully expect him to miss the start of the season, along with Aguero and many other players involved. Its quite a normal occurrence. Expect him back around GW 4.

Anyway, somebody took a look at the Copa here, and found out that last time the Copa players were heavily involved from the beginning, Suarez and Aguero scoring in GW1, and this time there's like 10 days more between Copa final and PL start - and it is not even guaranteed that Sanchez will get to the final.

Has anyone had a look at the ticker to see when fixtures shift for some of the big teams? For people planning an early wildcard (upto GW 8 or so), the fixture shift generally represents the best time to use it.

Good posts on cleanies for the promoted sides. Looking at their first 6 fixtures, I'd say Bou may get 3 cleanies, Nor; 2 and Watford 1. I'll prob play my Bou and Nor defenders against each other, where 0:0 likely but 1:0 either way not bad. What I like about these sides is its obvious when NOT to play them so better predictability of cleanies. Villa and WBA were unpredictable last year, I left every Hutton cleanie on the bench.

History tells us (99% confidence intervals) they won't keep cleanies in away games against the top 4 of Che, Ars, Man City. WBA could, but not likely. I like when poor teams know their limits.

It appears Spurs interest in Ings was genuine.
Do you think they dodged a bullet by losing him to Liverpool?

Performance is judged over a season, not two games. The fact Liverpool usually finish behind Spurs despite beating them just emphasises my point

usually, but when a team like liverpool has trashed spurs so badly, over the last couple of seasons, there is an exception to that rule.

                        What?! No.....

Also, take away the nine goals by Suarez inspired Liverpool last season and it doesn't look nearly as impressive.

what a ridiculous comment. lets take away all of kanes goals last season and see where spurs finished while we are at it. I repeat, we have beat you 5 games in a row, scoring 18, conceding 4.

Doesn't quite work like that though, because if they didnot have kane surely they would've tried something else to get the goals..

So now you admit it then? Notice that this was brought up only because you argued that he should remove all the goals of Liverpool with Suarez last season.

Average league position - this is not a valid metric unless you specify the time period. Spurs is usually below Liverpool except for some ad hoc seasons.

Strikers - Suarez and Sturridge are better than Soldado and Kane.

Midfielders - Henderson, Sterling, and Coutinho are better than Mason, Eriksen, and Lamela.

Manager - Okay. You win here.

Keeper - You win here too.

Training facilities - I wouldn't know, but do you really want to use this metric?

In the last six seasons (recent times, relating to current squads)
Liverpool have finished above Spurs and in the top four once.

Suarez is no longer there, and I don't think sturridge is better than kane. they both scored the same number of goals in their last full season for their clubs, and kane didn't have suarezs help. Also kane doesn't get injured all the time.

I think coutinho is the only Liverpool midfielder who would play in Spurs XI, sterling on past form but not current! You forgot about bentaleb.

No it's not a very good one, I just noticed today playing football manager, liver pools facilities are 'good' whereas Spurs have 'superb'

                          I stand corrected.

My bias was probably because I'm an Arsenal fan.

Liverpool does seem to be in crisis in the BPL.

                          Sorry.

                            I have an excuse. 🙂

As an Arsenal fan, I have a responsibility to maintain a certain antagonism against Spurs, United, and Chelsea.

Don't tell anyone, but I've been known to include players from all three teams in my fantasy squad. 🙂

                        Okay, over this time period.

Still, Spurs has an overblown sense of self-importance.

Liverpool belongs in the CL. I'm not so sure about Spurs.

It's pretty self-important to say a side "belongs" in the CL because of their history. They have qualified once since 2009, and crashed out in the group stages in that single attempt. If they aren't good enough, they no longer belong there.

I'm not sure about Liverpool either, but I think you're right in that it's a crisis at Liverpool that they're out of CL, whereas it was a dream for Spurs to be there, and not a crisis that they didn't achieve it, once again.

I don't really see the relevance of that, that's him playing as a DM, he won the Silver Ball at the World Youth Championship playing as an AM, but Mourinho changed his role.

I don't deny that he was dominant as a youth player, I just mean that he's not a technical wonder kid, is he. If he showed that skill as a 20-year-old, I still wouldn't say he's amazing prospect, and now he's 28, or so they say (referring to your post below which is probably spot on).

I'm from Serbia... and even it's not our best team, we are going to be champion... belive me... 😀 we are without Markovic (Liverpool), Mitrovic (Anderlecht), Nastasic (Schalke), Kostic (Stutgart), some guys played in U-19 World Cup where we won title... Zivkovic from Partizan Belgrade, left wing, best player, for 2 or 3 years, he will play in Premier... we sucks in "A" national team, but kids are great...
my picks for tonight game from Serbia are : Djuricic, Jojic and Pesic... if someone want to have some risk, then Srnic is player for that...

I'd make a wild guess, and say.

i dont think it will happen, but firmino is heavily linked with liverpool. I can see us signing a main striker too, so ings may not go straight into the starting 11. 4-3-3, 4-3-2-1, 4-1-2-1-2 are all possible formations

Sturridge thrives well with another striker, not sure Ings is the one - you're right about that... But then again, if they were really going to buy a top striker, why would they sign another backup like Ings to add to the likes of Balotelli, Lambert, Borini, Origi...

they are linked with Rondon, and Bacca today. Liverpool have approached them. I'm still eager to see Origi. Saw enough of him at the World cup, to think he would fit in well. Very similar to Sturridge. Not sure how well Lille suited him.

Well, WC is always a very small sample space to look at, and he was a disaster at Lille, but deserves a chance for sure.

Ings is very young as well.

Not sure how Rondon would improve them.

He wasn't bad on his first season at Lille though, that's what won him the place in the World Cup anyway, but again, that's a very small sample.

disaster is a bit harsh. 8 league goals for a 20 yr old isn't terrible. He was also undeservedly put in the worst ligue 1 team by l' equipe that was considered unfair by some journalists.

They didn't just put him there. They give ratings to players after every match, and then look at who come out best and worst after the season. Origi happened to have the 2nd worst rating of all strikers with at least 19 appearances.

However, having both followed the league and read L'Équipe, I think that maybe the journalists give unjustly bad ratings to some players after the matches, maybe because of too high expectations, or something marking the player out for the press. Origi's worst XI team mate Thauvin certainly received this treatment (he's disliked by the press), and I can't really see what Sankharé and Contento did in that worst XI either. These two latter guys were actually good, if not quite brilliant.

Not sure if this was Origi's case, although there could have been too high expectations after his transfer. But why 8 goals didn't get his rating higher, may be explained by that 2 goals were penalties, and 3 came in one match. While he would get a good rating (probably 8 out of 10) for his hat trick, that doesn't weigh much with all the 2's, 3's and 4's that he'd get for his no-shows.

Personally, I would have found worse strikers in the league, say Wolfswinkel, who at least played in a dominant team and was absolutely woeful.

Yeah, I'd argue that Can is the best DM they have in the team (don't waste him at RCB), Henderson and Milner will run the most in that team, and Coutinho is very good playing behind the strikers.

But then again, there's BR and his own set of ideas...

one thing is getting in decent players, another matter is whether they are used correctly. Liverpool have promoted their u16 coach to first team coach. He is very highly rated in some quarters

I'd understand that move from his part: back with his old manager who brought him up in the first place, and in a club that desperately needs new blood in defence.

But I can't see PSG letting him go too, as I haven't heard them having either plans or means to buy new players. They can't survive a season with just one LB, 3 CB's and 2 RB's, and if VdW goes, then also with just 1 RB. But I can't see them selling VdW either.

Especially when we already just bought Moreno (need to work on his positioning) and we have other pressing matter/position to addressed first.

Yes, but they would play him as a LWB in 3-5-2 one day, then purely LM in a 3-4-3 and then his natural LB at 4-3-3. You'd necessarily think a young player would have problems settling that way, after all he's no Philipp Lahm.

Last game we started with 4 CMids as both are CMids. It is nowhere near safe Tibbling will start again as coach might want a real winger, Larsson/Quaison.
Khalili is safer due to his enormous work rate.
But then again why fix something that aint broken so he may go with Tibbling again

Which do you think is better for U21 fantasy:

        A) 4 pts
        B) 2.5m extra to spend on players for semi finals and finals

          2.5M

Remember that in semi and finals only play 11 of the 15 (bar injury pre match)

yeah, saving the WC for next round would allow me to buy 4 cheapest players for the bench and thus saving 2.5m, but would have to take some hits this round

Utd will move to an out and out 4-3-3 which is LvG's favoured formation.

        So....

the problem is their squad depth. a couple of injuries and they are in trouble

plus they have Europe this season so team will be stretched.

on paper the above team should finish top 4 but Di Maria might go, Shaw can't seem to stay fit, Valdes is not great at commanding his area (which Utd need IMO)....

          I dunno

that's what I am saying. DDG defied stats last season with the amount of unforced errors Utd had and I honestly think he is the reason for them finishing top4.

Utd need to buy some experienced defenders otherwise they will really struggle next season with Valdes in goal, if he has quality in front of him like at Barca they will be ok but can;t see that happening.

it's fact, not an opinion that he was the reason they finished in the top 4.

                        it's one of the reasons.

Liverpool and Spurs poor results was another reason along with Saints second half season slump.

As bad as liverpool were, De Gea by himself, got Utd more than the 8 points they finished ahead on.

Yes, why spend that much in wages when he is going to be 2nd choice?

I think the plan has been for Valdes to replace De Gea all along.

Cech to Arsenal seemed to easy.

                    Spurs won't sell Lloris.

Why would Valdes have agreed to join Utd if he was going to be second string. I think Utd knew DDG would be leaving so wanted to have a replacement in place.
