Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Jordan Henderson

Once ridiculed for the sizeable transfer fee he fetched (in the region of £20 million) upon his move to Liverpool back in the summer of 2011, Jordan Henderson has since matured into arguably the Reds’ most consistent performer.

The all-action midfielder is one those Fantasy assets that’s capable of quietly amassing a strong points haul to little fanfare, as evidenced by the fact he recorded the best total score among Liverpool’s squad despite rarely being considered as a Fantasy option. A peripheral figure for many years, Henderson is now firmly on our Fantasy radars for the upcoming campaign.

Key Factors

    • Henderson recorded his highest ever Fantasy Premier League points haul last term (162), beating his previous best (133) from the 2010/11 season. The Sunderland-born midfielder achieved this by virtue of a career-high number of goals (six) and assists (ten) – only five midfielders chalked up more assists. Despite operating from a deeper role than his more glamorous midfield team-mates, Henderson outscored both Raheem Sterling (158) and Philippe Coutinho (134), underlining how integral he’s become to Liverpool’s attacking output.

    • Henderson’s impressive points tally is sure to trigger an increase on his previous 6.0 starting price. It’s expected he’ll be pitched within the 7.5–8.5 bracket, which should offer good value in light of his security of starts. A stalwart under Brendan Rodgers’ regime, Henderson missed just one match last year due to injury and three matches in the 2013/14 season because of suspension. As one of the first names on Liverpool’s team sheet, Fantasy managers might well be tempted by the reliability he offers in the unpredictable opening few Gameweeks.

    • In the wake of Steven Gerrard’s departure from Anfield, Sterling’s uncertain future and Daniel Sturridge’s ongoing injury travails, the Reds are in need of a confident leader – someone who can rally the troops for an assault on the Champions League berths. Henderson displayed qualities becoming of such a character throughout last season, delivering at crucial moments and imploring others to match his tireless work ethic. In the midst of their 12-match unbeaten streak, Rodgers lauded Henderson’s growing influence in the centre of the park:

“I think Jordan is improving all the time. As he matures even more tactically, he’ll become even better. He’s always had athleticism and tactically he’s improving all the time. Technically, you see his qualities. His passing is improving. And he’s becoming one of the real leaders of this young team.”

    • While Liverpool will look to Henderson to fill Gerrard’s inspirational boots as skipper, he may also get to replace him on spot-kick duties. With Gerrard injured and Daniel Sturridge on the pitch, Henderson was reportedly the designated penalty taker back in February when Mario Balotelli controversially snatched the ball from him to notch against Besiktas. Henderson later converted from the spot against Arsenal in the damaging 4-1 defeat at the Emirates in April. With Balotelli unlikely to earn regular pitch-time next season and Danny Ings bedding in, Henderson would appear to be in a prime position to add spot-kicks to his blossoming goal potential.

  • Although the majority of Liverpool’s midfielders and forwards saw their productivity diminish as a result of Suarez’ emigration to northern Spain, Henderson actually upped his frequency of key passes (one every 53 minutes down to 52.1 minutes) and created more chances (66 to 58) than Coutinho. Similarly, his frequency of shots was near identical to 2013/14 (from 67.1 minutes per attempt to 68.8 minutes), though Henderson proved more clinical; he netted 12% of his chances last term compared to 8.2% the campaign beforehand, whereas Sterling (8.3%) and Coutinho (4.9%) struggled to convert their opportunities. Whilst Sterling looks set to join Steven Gerrard through the exit door, the likes of Coutinho and new boy Roberto Firmino could be set for extended summer breaks due to Brazil’s ongoing Copa America involvement. Given that James Milner will also need time to settle following his move from Man City, Henderson could well prove to be the most reliable option at Anfield over the first few weeks of the upcoming campaign.

People are asking why Utd are interested in Ramos (29) and Schweinsteiger (30)?

Saying they are too old etc. Utd need some experience and players who have been there and done it. These two very much fall into that, they have won everything.

Utd's squad for next season currently only has 5 players over the age of 27. That is a very young squad to be competing on all fronts.

I wouldn't agree. Not good enough for Man U in place of Carrick, completely pointless playing with Carrick, and just a decent left back.

Shaw with fitness can offer what Blind cant. The game against Chelsea case and point. He made Ivanovic look like Glen Johnson.

You rate Shaw by one good, and not even spectacular performance (and even then he was finally substituted) and Carrick by his reputation, while Blind was out of these three the one who was able for the whole season to take possession from opponent, and to make plays once he got the ball, a bit in the mould of Herrera, who was another excellent performer even if you forget his lucky scoring. Both played definitely a better season than Carrick, but people here will always rate Carrick from old memory, no matter how he plays.

It's "a case in point", btw.

"You rate Shaw by one good, and not even spectacular performance"

No, I rate Shaw, and the game against Chelsea is illustrative of something Blind cannot do.

"(and even then he was finally substituted)"

                    Fitness related.

"Blind was out of these three the one who was able for the whole season to take possession from opponent"

Yes he managed a season, but being fit isn't the point. Limited on the ball, relatively weak defensively.

"a bit in the mould of Herrera"

Blind isn't even close to Herrera in terms of football intelligence and ability in the final two-thirds.

"Both played definitely a better season than Carrick"

                    I wouldn't agree, at all.

"but people here will always rate Carrick from old memory"

Not sure how you can claim knowledge about the reasons for people rating Carrick. He is an exceptional player, and his impact on United is clearly seen in results with and without him.

Maybe. Although it doesn't seem so unlikely when you're Ramos. 😉 At 6.0 he'd interest me, I remember he's been very good in UEFA and FIFA fantasy footballs, but seen his star status I'd wager he'll also come in at price of 7.0 or even 7.5 and would rather opt for Kos or Ivan.

He may not have such a good goal scoring record in the Premier League but if United look to have a decent defence this year and have a good chance of regular clean sheets then he could be a great option.

got a feeling everton will have a decent season like they did 2 seasons ago, especially with no Europa league. fancy them to finish above spurs and soton and maybe finish 6th. think Martinez should start trusting Barclay more and drop Osman or naysmith for him. this could be the year ross shines. I got a feeling lukaku will get a hatful this season and will then be sold next summer. coleman will be back to his best and although not many rate cleverly I think he could do ok at everton with mcCarthy

didn't they get 73 points 2 seasons back? I know baines, jagielka, howard etc are getting on a bit but I think the Europa league really took it's toll last season especially as Martinez took it seriously unlike other managers. you maybe right of course but I cant see soton repeating last years form with forster being out, clyne leaving, sneiderlin on his way, plus Europa league etc and spurs haven't done much in transfer dealings yet and will probably lose Lloris, plus Europa league distractions. coleman, baines, Barclay, lukaku, mirrallas are all capable of stella seasons

who are the contenders for 6th then assuming che, utd, city, arsenal, liv will be top 5? spurs, Swansea, stoke, soton, palace? I think everton have as much chance of any of these clubs but yeah they could do with a decent winger. someone like konoplaypo (or whatever his name is). lukaku would thrive with him and mirrallas on the wings and ross behind him. I think Martinez will learn from last season. everton have always been a yoyo club with moyes and Martinez. top 6 one season, struggling the next

FFP was corrupt all along it was just the so called traditional bigger clubs trying to stop up and coming clubs from competing thus challenging their monopoly

I have heard a few say that they dont want Wilshere at City so it is a bit divided on him. I would be concerned about his injury record. Last thing we want is another situation like Jovetic that just couldnt stay fit.

city could have an awesome front 6 next season if they get players they are linked with. silva, sterling, kun, yaya, KDB, bony. got to gel first though. utds front 6 look great on paper last summer yet only finished 4th. as I said last night utd's, arsenals, city's new signings will have to hit the ground running or Chelsea's settled team could have a 5 point gap by november

I think Fernandinho is essential to next season for stability. Or another defensive mid. While I love the idea of Aguero, Silva, KDB, Sterling, Toure and Pogba all in the same team, our matches would end 5-3 or 5-4 haha, no defensive stability at all.

city need kompany to return to his best and be fit all season plus mangala to step it up big time. there were signs he was improving near the end of the season. yeah that front 6 I mentioned earlier would be a bit ossie ardiles at spurs. but still it shows the attacking potential of city. he likes playing 2 up top at home so bony could have a good season. I really like him and think rogers should've got him in as soon as suarez left liverpool

Yeah Kompany back to his best would be brilliant for City. Last year Mangala and Demichelles was a better combination. Kompany was more of a liability and I hate to say that. Hopefully that will change this year and he forms a great partnership with Mangala. I can see Bony having an important part to play next season. He only got going at the end of the season ad looked good when he did. City could be a very attacking force depending on how the transfers go but would be better off to play 451, I think the two up top left City vulnerable in the midfield and defence at times.

Yeah I feel the setup with Yaya in the deeper role is too exposed defensively. I actually prefer Kolarov too but just thought that Clichy will be first choice still and I don't feel they need to change much just add couple quality starters and improve the depth in certain positions.
