The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Man City

Our series of members articles, assessing the season gone by, continues this evening with a look at Manchester City.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men kicked off the campaign as champions after finishing two points clear of Liverpool in 2013/14 but a poor Easter period, where they lost four times in six matches between Gameweeks 27-32, allowed Chelsea to clinch the crown with three fixtures to spare.

We take time out to delve into their data, assessing the performance of City’s key Fantasy assets in terms of their creative and goal threat output.

Wow 34* Celsius really sets you english off, hey?

For you yankees, London just endured 92* F for a whole day!

Joking aside, what's the deal. Is air conditioning uncommon, on account of the climate?

I think the point was that 92 degrees had to endure London for a whole day.

Air conditioning is more than uncommon. I haven't seen a domestic air conditioning unit in the UK, apart from a friend's swanky mansion and even then it was rarely in use. We only have need for AC like 5 days of the year at the very most so it doesn't really entice people.

Shame about the women's footy lucy. did you last out to the bitter end?

On the subject of AC, the huy that sits opposite me at work has had an AC fitted in his bungalow bedroom. cost him 2 grand. In general, he does class as "a bit odd".

No one has air conditioning at home - no need for it. We had to go to buy a fan, luckily had AC in the office. And then there's having to get the rush hour tube...

but tbh I've considered leaving the game on a high. Since I'm not sure if i can repeat such performance. But then again, you need to be successful twice to make sure it's not a fluke, right? 😉

Yeah, it feels good. At first i thought it was unrealistic. Maybe next season I can actually put it as a target.

Top 10 is still very, very commendable. With your population and the status of football mad nation, you should be proud. Bu why so much love for LIV in your country?

Ramos is important for us, we need a defender with experience if we are to be competitive in the Champions League. I think there is plenty of money to still make other deals happen and do realise that if PSG are keen to part with 60m then they can have ADM.

We'll get new players anyway. Money isn't an issue.

We will regret selling ADM. He's one of the best who has had a bad season.

I consider Stoke to be the most improved side next year. Bojan fit, Shaquiri and possible Konogoplia (spelling) pressure taken off old hands like Walters who played injured for a large part of last year.

      Eder - no idea

Shaqiri - like the player but not the team. Had a very decent WC last year. Guess he'll be priced around 7-8.5 mil and for that price, I'd prefer a proven 4th midfielder for my team.

Who thinks Liverpool signing benteke wouldn't be a good move?

I don't think its a good idea, not only is he a thug who isn't really a very good player and requires long balls and crosses (not Liverpool),
But it would means they would have to play sturridge, Ings and benteke at the same time. (None would he happy as back up strikers)

Noting the talk on the FPL launch date being moved forward because of earlier EPL start dates:
I think opening the site has more to do with the work required to do it and having as much right as possible in terms of premier league squads. Also, site set up must be more complicated these days with increased technology available to improve it.

Therefore i would guess you will not see the opening until at least 12 July.

Sound logic but the game has launched in early July before albeit some time ago. I agree though, I don't think the early PL kickoff is a reason for it to arrive early. The work which goes into preparing the new game will determine when it starts up. That might take more time than it used to or be the same which will still result in a mid July release.

Yes, I agree but the time they have it open before the game is directly proportional to the number of players in the game, so I'd say they wouldn't want to open it too late.

Since the transfer window is finally officially open, here's my transfer window wishlist.

*Krychowiak and Higuain to Arsenal, even Benteke if Higuain is not possible.

*Paul Pogba remain at Juventus, and not move to the Barcelona bench.

    *Schneiderlin to anywhere but United.

*Cabaye and Remy to Palace, would really make the mid-table battle interesting (Stoke, Palace, Southampton, West Ham and Everton for 7th to 10th).

    and finally...
*Aguero to stay at City. As much as I'd love the City team to weaken, he is one of the reasons why EPL is lovely, and it would be a shame to lose that quality.

Site set up is way more easier these days with improved technology.

Plus the framework of FPL is already in place. They just need to re-edit the database and minor-design changes if any take place.

It really isn't too much work. I know this because i am into web and app development.

      Hey Lateriser,

Regarding the mid selection atm I'm thinking

      Hazard 9.0 9.0 6.0 filler

I'm very tempted with Ritchie, but not sure if I'm bold enough to alter the team format. Maybe he'll be my 4th Mid and I'll just bank the spare cash. Doubt he'll be priced at 4.5m like a filler

I reckon the biggest job must be working out player prices. There must be more than 1 person doing it and as was shown in the player price prediction post no two people agree on all of them.

If you could wish for any changes this year, what would it be:

    Mine:

    1) Manager substitutions overnight between Sat/Sun/Mon and Tue/Wed including captain change
    2) Transparency over price changes
    3) 1 point per 2 save for goalkeepers
    4) Prizes (BPL tickets) for GW winners, Monthly winners, Top 5 and Mini league winners with over 100 entries)

The same request I have every season (and its very realistic)

      - Don't limit the January WC to just January, let it be available at any stage during the second half of the season. Its the easiest way to eliminate the problem of a January template team and still provide an incentive for people to keep playing past the xmas period.

      1) No price change before deadline
      2) Getting full profit on any player we sell or only half loss while selling
      3) Goal pts: 8pts for defenders, 6 for mid and 4 for forwards
      4) Only 2pts for earning penalties

Would hate number 1 but the rest seem reasonable. One of the reasons I like FPL so much is the set once per game week approach.

I'd i want to play in gameweek changed I'll play a different game (and do in sky)

      My wishlist.

      - Price change only after all of the games of a gameweek end.
      - Only one WC - none in January. Please! PLEASE!
      - 1 point per 2 saves
      - Put Walcott as a striker, and Brunt as a defender.

2 pts clean sheet and BPS improvement tackles, interceptions and recoveries. Someone like Matic who, for me was a better defender than Terry should be part of the game. Same McCarthy/Everton.

            2 points for playing
            2 points for clean sheet
3 bonus points (on a very good day)

            7 points total maximum?

It would ruin the game imo. They would just get a very predictable, consistent, middle of the road score every single week while doing nothing fantasy-worthy. Basically nearly risk-free scoring.

FPL is all about the explosive scoring imo.

I take your point but they should get a chance to get points like defenders. ATM there is no real point having them included in FPL squads.

I think the best way is to actually classify them as defenders. There's not much point in having hundreds of players in FPL squads. And that's the way it should be. Goals, assists and CSs are the essence of fantasy football.

I don't think he is either but there would have been many who disagreed, I could easily see how he might have been lumped into that group. I wonder how many points he would have got?

Basically, I'd limit it to the likes of Matic, Mikel, Lucas, Tiote, Coquelin etc that take like 10 shots a season and barely leave their own half.

He was getting 6 goals and a similar number of assists per season, no chance that is considered DM-like.

Extra 20 for goals, extra 45 for CSs, 9 fewer for goals conceded, so 297 before the likely increase in baps.

Yep, I get it, the more granular the positions the more it's prone to misclassification though - the ones you've listed are clearcut but you've seen some of the arguments that go on here about DM vs box to box, etc. (For what it's worth I like the idea in principle, just playing devil's advocate)

By the way, my calculations have Yaya down as getting 298 points if he'd been a defender two seasons ago. I made no bonus adjustment though so it's possible he would have broken 300 🙂

Another good idea. Really I will be the 1st to say I have not thought it through. I just felt last year, the game was more template than ever. Another position, 2 Def Mids, taking away a defender and normal mid and having to play at least 1 of them could add spice. As I said I have not really thought it through though.

      3) is a terrible idea. All that will do is further emphasise the GKs from crap teams who are already massively favoured.

The only change I would make is 5 or 6 points for a GK CS to actually make the premium GKs actually have any worth whatsoever.

I like that many of these suggested changes are (at least part) reflected in the UFPL game.
      - Active manager substitutions and captain changes
      - Better prizes
      - No January wildcard
      - No hidden price movement (albeit no movement at all!)
      - Better reward for defensive aspects of the game (cbi, etc.)

And yet when we've had threads where people discuss the UFPL game they moan that they wish it was more like FPL just with a bigger squad!

I would just like there to be some form of transfers more regularly (a couple once per month for example) as you just get completely gutted by injuries and there's basically nothing you can do that will make any difference (loans basically break even over the long run). Just made it incredibly boring for me. I just spent the entire season fluctuating between like 300th-600th. So dull.

I'd definitely like to see the loans system be less punitive, I'm pretty hopeful that will happen - I imagine they'll see how little the loans system was actually used and revisit it.

Replace the January wildcard with 6 FTs that can be used any time in the New Year.

2 FTs for GKs only that can be used any time during the season.

The ability to permanently sell one of your squad places for an extra £1M on your budget.

3 captain wildcards that can be used anytime where if your vice captain scores higher than your captain you get the VC points doubled instead.

All these changes add skill to the game and reduce the formation of templates.

      Possibly:

      1. 3 transfers - only during match time

I'd stop playing if manager subs was an option, takes away the fun of getting it right at end of a gameweek and feeling smug because your rival picked wrong captain, ditch the January wildcard and 1 point for every 2 saves

      simple as that

Both to a certain extent, but Lambert mainly. Mentioned last season that although cheap, I didn't understand the point of getting in a 3rd choice striker. Like Bogdan. We should've gone for someone who is an improvement on Mignolet and kept Mignolet as the backup, rather than the other way around. Same thing with Sturridge(injuries) and Lambert/Ings.

                  Just going about things backwards.

Well, I thought Firmino was brought in as a striker, because Coutinho is their best no 10. They're now nearing a case of too many cooks.

Yes, but he is a natural no 10, ain't he? I think they would not look bad if they lined up as.

          -------------------------------Can
          ------Henderson------------------------Milner
          ----------------------------Coutinho
          ----------Benteke/Stu---------------Firmino

All those midfielders suit the midfield diamond, even Lallana for one of Henderson/Milner and Lucas for Can.

I think one thing to note though is also that I think Firmino wins a lot of balls back in the final third, it would really suit the pressing game especially considering he could very easily drop back into midfield.

I haven't seen that much of Firmino myself, hardly any live games, only highlights and all, so missed all that. Surely a very creative player for sure.

Yes, or as part of a front 2 maybe, like I said above? Hope he does not become a fringe player like Lallana last season, they paid a fortune for him.

Silva is good, especially if Kun suffers a bit from the Copa.

I think both are too prone to rotation, even with no more signings at hand.

          ------------------------Coquelin------------------Cazorla/Ramsey
          --Ramsey/Walcott--------------Ozil------------------------Sanchez
          ------------------------------Giroud/Walcott.

I think Ramsey is behind Cazorla in the CM pecking order, Walcott is behind Giroud (or new striker) is the ST pecking order, and they are direct opponents for the RM position..

I would rather pick Sanchez after his obligatory two week rest. 😉

I think Ramsey will start nonetheless, but yeah his versatility might hurt him and us potential FPL suitors.

Yes, Ramsey is surely one of our best players, and I eventually see him starting in wide midfield given the season Cazorla just had, still there is an air of uncertainty.

If it were me, I'd give the RM spot to a fully-fit Ox. Love AOC!

Agree. I can even see Rambo playing in that Ozil spot, the German moved to the left when Sanchez is not around.

We need a big squad to win the big honours this coming season. And I believe in Cech, he'll Gunner keep winning.

Yes, the only real limitation I see in the squad is the lack of a backup CDM. Coquelin is brilliant, but he can't play 50 games in a season, anyone like Schneiderlin/Krychowiak/Bender would atleast be an upgrade on Flamini.

Flamini is decent as back up but not the one to depend against the big boys.

Why there is still a place for Mikel Arteta at Arsenal I don;t know.

William Carvalho and Coquelin will compete for the CDM spot, and neither being fantasy options, I don't think it affects decision making for us FPL players.

On the other hand, Vidal will put a spanner in the works, only Sanchez would be nailed in such a case. 😀

United and Liverpool pulled my last season down. Even when I tried to climb up, a RVP blank streak during Christmas followed by a Sturridge no-show in GW33-34 DGW ruined my season.

Until Walcott (c) in GW38 that is. 😉

Liverpool is a no go from me as long BR is the manager, and Studge is unfit. Their midfielders burnt me, to the extent that I actually dropped Silva to get 3 of them during the DGW. Won;t forgive 'em.

I missed that by a whisker tbh with you. As a benched-Ramsey replacement. Bad thing is I replaced Vardy with Defoe (what was I thinking?) in DGW37 and ended up doing Defoe -> Ulloa with my final FT. Still I can't complain with what I achieved on final day. Very well done matey.

No wonder Walcott will always be my all-time favorite FPL player. In the three seasons I've played this game, I've captained Walcott just 3-4 times, and twice he got a hatty.

I think Koscielny's quality as a CB has always been a bit underrated, especially when he has had a mediocre CB by his side, and shite GK behind them.

Now that Cech is here, and maybe Gabriel can step up and replace Mertesacker, we will really know if Koscielny is really that good, I still believe only Terry is a better CB than him in the whole league.

    1. NABIL - FPL otai

Personally think Mertesacker is underrated. Not the pick for FPL like Kos, but when he's good, he's as solid as a world-class CB. Lack of speed maybe, but don't think Gabriel is a step up.

Well, Gabriel is 24 and has hardly played a handful of games in an Arsenal shirt. Mertesacker is a brilliant CB for all his limitations, but (maybe) Gabriel and Koscielny can forge up a decent partnership? Just hoping.

Yeah, can't say much about Gabriel since his chances were limited last season.

Maybe they can, but I'd prefer Mert than any Brazilian CB other than Thiago Silva.

Yes, I just don't see Mertesacker getting any faster, and that limitation gets more obvious with age than any other.

Don't get me wrong, I love him, just we need a backup plan for pacy forwards and counter-attacking teams.

Indeed. For that game we need to play Walcott as CB 😆 Seriously, we need to prepare for such thing, maybe AOC need to develop his defensive skills. But then again Makelele was not that pacy.

I would love to see Chambers develop as well. His body is really more suited to CB than RB, and that was his most impressive positions between RB, CB and CDM.

Yeah Chambo, forgot about him. He needs to work on his composure, but surely he's a very decent back up for those positions.

I have this memory of him being run ragged against the Swans last year. Too slow and I can't understand the 11 mil valuation when he wasn't nailed on at Soton.

That was when he was up against Moontero at RB, which is not his natural position.

He played at CB with much more composure, and as we have seen over the years, a lot of footballers have gone on to become brilliant centrebacks even with a speed limitation.

I'd say CB. For all his limitations, Mertesacker is really good at what he does, and come on, Chambers is surely faster.

Yeah, that's why Coquelin is such an important player for us, does all of the dirty work, and still is not a brawler like Flamini.

But he is no Bojan, who was a no-show since he was Messi's mate at 16. On the other hand, Shaqiri has performed so well for his country and in his limited chances at Bayern, before the Inter nightmare happened.

He atleast deserves a club like Spurs or Liverpool.

On potential rule changes, particularly the ones that prevent the templates from quickly forming - how about reduce the FTs to something like one every 2 GWs? I've not really thought it through but it just popped into my head. Can't see any immediate downside - I'm pretty sure the template would still form but players would need more hits to make it happen.

It's plausible traffic would be lessened - but not necessarily proven. If you make an early transfer in a Gameweek is that it for you? You don't login again until the new gameweek? Certainly not true in my case.

Of course it won't affect us hardcore players, but we are a very small minority of the people who play the game. People get in a habit of logging in every saturday and making their transfers. If they don't have a FT every week, then they're less likely to log in every week, and arguably more likely to pack it in altogether.

Sadly I think you're right. It's a bit like the January wildcard - which doesn't really improve the game but increases the appeal for the so-called casual player, and this is more important to those that administer the game.

I'm yet to be convinced of the problem of a 'template'.

I've no idea how many thousands of RMTs I've seen on this site but in all of them I've never seen a team that was identical to my own. Sure, a core of certain players becomes commonplace when they're scoring well (Hazard, Sanchez, Aguero, Kane last season) but it's hardly reasonable to expect managers not to select the players most likely to get points. It's still more than possible to make your team different by which players you select around that common core.

      1. Pasqualinho
        • 14 Years

Not surprising from your position last year GW - the template is great for those who spend half a season in the top 100, as it helps you to stay there without too much effort.

Now look at it from the perspective of someone, for example a South African potato, who can't get into the Top 4k because everyone above him has similar teams.

        1. buffrey
          • 11 Years

Pick a different team then. No one is forcing anyone into selecting a template and those that got high rightly have no obligation to change.

Chasers have to gamble is the nature of any game

That's pretty much the opposite of to why the idea came into my head. Those who get it right first time only have a short-lived and negligible advantage on those who are ultimately copying them. That's what the idea is looking to prevent.

            1. buffrey
              • 11 Years

So you want to reward those that get on the good bandwagons early.

Arguably price rises do this, slightly less so last season with slower rises (which I preferred).

Lessening transfers will not help, it will just make people less likely to continue playing.

Maybe limiting numbers as a rise to certain players (not what I would want but still) so players may only have a max of 50% ownership or say 20% more than the starting ownership, which ever is greatest.

You do then run into the issue of dead teams, etc

adm..baines...aguero gw8..sanchez brace against burnley..followed by kane, austin, ivan, benteke..lei players etc..there are many opportunities along the way where u can get ahead before these players become part of the template. and even more importantly selling these players before they lose their form.

be in front of the template is what the game is about i guess..not only getting the players when they become template.

waiting for 2 gws to have a FT = more people giving up the game early or forget about making transfers.

also that the game would become too dependent on gw1 squads as well as making early leads hard to catch.

A situation where management of the transfers is an integral part of the game will help to some degree (ie you only have so many transfers to last the season, but you can also pay for extras using points). However due to the proliferation of sites like this the template is inevitable.

But who? They have quality, versatile players who cover all positions twice over. Carvalho yes. A centreback yes. A striker I am not sure. But it will be big bucks to improve what they have.

Lacazette would be a start, and they really really need a DM, even if only as cover for Coquelin. I take your point that these players aren't growing on trees, but an injury to Coquelin and they're done for the season.

That's why I mention Carvalho. I think the manager intended Chambers to be a Def Mid. Coq recalled out of desparation. What a win he was!

            That's hyperbole.

Ramsey can play in that role.

Then Chambers can play in that role.

In the case of a trifecta of injuries (highly unlikely), Wilshere can play in that role (he does this at international level).

A world class player would be welcomed by any fan of any team, but the Arsenal doesn't need to sign anyone.

You would not be able to play Ramsey or Wilshere as a DM against any of the top sides and expect results. The lower table teams, yes, but Chelsea, City and probably the others would crush you, especially if they're at home.
