FPL Analysis – BPS Changes – Initial Thoughts

This was no ordinary Fantasy Premier League (FPL) launch. The usual noise and bluster, the regular scramble for team IDs and early “Rate My Team” requests, was magnified by some far-reaching changes that gave us plenty to consider on the opening day.

While we’ve already presented some initial views on the three new “Chips”, the more subtle changes to the Bonus Point System (BPS) may have slipped under the radar.

For the uninitiated, the BPS system is the calculation used to govern the award of FPL bonus points – the points allocated to the “best” players in any given match.

The system uses a variety of Opta data which measure player actions on the pitch and allocates a score to each action – either positive or negative. These scores are then totalled with the top three ranked scores earning bonus points.

Today’s launch revealed some slight tweaks to this BPS scoring system which will have some impact on how the Bonus Points are allocated for the coming season.

We’ve already been running a Hot Topic on the matter throughout the afternoon but, for those who have missed this additional update, here’s the skinny…

BPS Decrease For Pass Completion
2 BPS points awarded for 70 to 79% pass completion (at least 30 passes made) (instead of 3)
4 BPS points awarded for 80 to 89% pass completion (at least 30 passes made) (instead of 6)
6 BPS points awarded for 90%+ pass completion (at least 30 passes made) (instead of 9)

BPS Increase For Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI)
1 BPS point is now awarded for every 2 CBI (instead of every 3).

BPS Increase For Tackles (net)
2 BPS points awarded for every Successful Tackle (net) (instead of 1 BPS point).

BPS Increase for Saves
2 BPS Points awarded for every Save (instead of 1 BPS point).

First Impressions

We will delve into the potential impact of these changes in more detail via a Members article. However, immediately there are some obvious considerations served up.

For starters, goalkeepers will receive double the BPS rewards for the saves they make. This will have clear ramifications, making shot-stopping performances all the more likely to earn bonus recognition. In turn, this could reduce the Bonus Point appeal of defenders in sides that concede shots on target.

Undoubtedly, this will compound the clamour for cheaper goalkeeping options, with the likes of Costel Pantilimon and the custodians in the promoted sides boosted in our thinking.

Pantilmon may even have provided the catalyst for this change.

In Sunderland’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates in Gameweek 37, the Romanian put on a superb one-man display of defiance, making eight saves on the night. He failed to win a single Bonus Point.

Instead, the BPS favoured Arsenal’s defenders who, in truth, were more intent on bursting forward in desperate search of a winning goal than keeping Sunderland at bay.

Indeed, the reduction in BPS for pass completion may also have been considered as a result of this very match.

The likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker were promoted in the BPS that night, not least by their pass completion – that pair, along with Hector Bellerin, all earned nine BPS for passing. Pantilmon earned just eight BPS from his saves.

Arsenal’s defenders will certainly require some further examination in the light of these changes. Both Mertesacker and Koscielny easily break 30 passes per match and both earned 89% pass completion over the season: clearly they will take a BPS hit as a result of these changes.

While they will take the hit there, the centre-backs will at least benefit from the hike in BPS for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI).

Dominant centre-backs may now come to the fore once again, having spent a season somewhat in the shade of the raiding full-back in Bonus Point terms.

Full-backs will be somewhat boosted by the increase in BPS awarded for net Tackles Won but the suspicion is that this will not level out the CBI increase and will result in full-backs, particularly those who were also reliant on completed passes, drop below their centre-back team-mates in the BPS pecking order.

There are, of course, implications for attacking players. However, while the likes Yaya Toure and Cesc Fabregas have earned handsome BPS returns via their passing prowess, it’s fair to say that there are other major factors at play when calculating their match tallies: goals and assists will remain king.

Just hours after absorbing the BPS changes, our impression is that it is clearly defenders and, of course, goalkeepers, who will feel the real impact of these tweaks.

However, this is a subject that will be treated to far more conjecture and insight in the next few weeks, not least on these pages.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Actually like it a lot.

I might just drop Mert to 5.0 so one of the 4.0 defenders becomes a 4.5.

I am also being tempted by Giroud!

Been a striker exodus this season, we'll need more than 1. At least we've still got Roy, and Appiah looks pretty good.

Yeah 2 would be ideal, but the way Ernie rotated Roy/McG/Burns last year, one could work. Especially if we paid big bucks for 1, would rather that than two mediocre. Yeah need to see more of Appiah

Stoked with Roly re-signing. I recon he'll just keep growing into that no.10 spot. This year will be his year I recon.

I can't see Appiah doing much next season, he looks very raw to me. Burns will be a big loss but Krishna really made a name for himself last season. A decent Burns replacement and the season will be a good one 🙂

Appiah's a handful, which is what Ernie likes. I think we'll see a lot more of him off the bench this season. But fingers crossed for a big international striker signing, holding my breath for that.

Indeed, he's got a lot of pace but lacks end product from what I've seen. I hope so, the money's certainly there for it after selling Burns.

Layun an assist to Gio Dos Santos. Mexico 6 Cuba 0. That was a pretty good long pass. I know it’s only Cuba but still I count this as good form for Layun.

My initial thoughts on the chips:

    Wildcards
One each half of the season will mean, I'm willing to bet, 90 per cent of serious players will have played their first wildcard by the time GW5 starts. It removes the strategic option of burning early for team value or saving for an injury crisis or a later DGW. That negative overwhelms the winter wildcard template argument (which has some merit, but is overstated here IMHO).

    Bench boost
It didn't take long for the regulars here to work out that if you pair it with a wildcard the week before you could make a killing on a DGW. Therefore all serious players will keep it until one of those lovely juicy DGWs is on the horizon. Again, it will create little strategic variety. If you were allowed to play it after a gameweek had begun that might be more interesting: do you burn it in GW18 when that £5m striker you benched gets a hat-trick or hold in the hope of something better?

    Triple captain
More interesting as a tasty fixture could tempt some players into using this, but there also tends to be the odd GW where just two teams have a DGW. This would be a great time to play this chip and I think many serious players will do so.

    All out attack
Could be the most randomly played of the three new chips, but I suspect most serious players will play it early when low team values mean they have weaker defences. I predict most will play it in an early Gameweek where all eight attackers have tasty fixtures - potentially in the first week or the week after an early wildcard, if you have planned your team to take maximum advantage.

Overall, I'm doubtful these changes will add significant tactical variety to the game for serious players and, in the case of wildcards, they may actually reduce it.

I take your point, but if you look at it in the context of the rest of the season the price shifts were still greater that week than most other gameweeks. The disappointment came from the changes in price change threshold, which meant people didn't build as much team value as expected. There may be less inclination to play it in one specific early week this time (particularly if there's no early DGW), but I think many serious players will still play it early to ride the emerging early season template to higher team value.

      Agree completely.
I made the same point about the wilcard a few pages back. There will be much less diversity of strategy, which is a shame.

None. I held on to my wildcard last year, and my team value suffered for it (wasn't terrible, but it could have been better). I agree that most will pull the trigger early.

WCs - agree. The main debate of early WC or hold for DGWs is now essentially moot as people can do both. Never really needed a January WC too much myself but will be interesting to see how teams end up after Jan without having a WC

Bench Boost - Yeah seems the sensible thing. Load up on all the DGWers on a WC and then watch the DGW points roll in

Triple Captain - With great power comes great responsibility. This could make or break you. As such I feel most people will try and minimise the risk with it. DGW Aguero (C) or the likes

All out attack - As an avid 3-4-3 player, this doesnt add much to the table I feel and will likely use a week where Im struggling to play 11. Most likely round christmas. Bringing a Boyd or the likes off the bench isnt overly appealing. I reckon this is more of an advantage for the 3-5-2 players.

        • 9 Years

Bringing Boyd of the bench might not be appealing, but if you set up with an über cheap defence and 4/5 elite/higher mid-priced forwards/mids and round out the remaining forward/mid spots with ~£6m men... then early wildcard to your optimal 3-4-3 squad...

Unless there is a big dgw which allows you to have 15 dgw players..otherwise bench boost should cause more variation imo. If it becomes clear that dgw is as spread out as last season then bench boost will be very important since everyone might use them at different timing

For the all-out attack chip, I can see it being useful late in the season. By that point, many have drifted away from a strict 343 if the team value allows. If the defence has some undesirable fixtures, then might has well use it, but only once the 8th attacker is more than bench fodder.

Or it could be useful right at the start of the season to give you a good start rank wise.

It's not really that much of a boost, all it does is make the 5th mid more of an important position as opposed to a 4.5m 2 pointer.

Tempted to use mine in week 1 as my 4th and 5th mids are Ritchie and Albrighton.

I'm not getting this play WC early business. I get the second WC but what's the logic in playing it really early. Price rises weren't rapid last year and you'll have to survive another 30 odd GWs on ft and -4. Surely you'd want to keep it till GW7 at the earliest?

    1. Marknlard
      • 14 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

It would be great not to need it early, but chances are that most teams will need some repairing as it's pretty unlikely to hit all the right notes right from the off.

Worked really well for me. Maybe because it just kept momentum going and found myself ahead of the curve rather than in the chasing pack early on, which I guess is the main catalyst for price rises. That week with the international break and transfer deadline seems a good time to pull the trigger too.

    3. the cromulent one

The advantage of the early wc is that the nailed-on starters are never really known until a bit into the season. The early wc is more a means to avoid losing value than it is to build value. Unless you select perfectly at the start of the year, you will have a handful of players that will lose value unless you get rid of them quickly. It is a lot harder to build value than it is to lose it (twice as hard, to be precise).
I managed to keep my wc until late in the season last year, but that was only because I stumbled upon a very good initial team. Without such luck, I won't be able to resist the early wc.

      1. Marknlard

This is completely on the money. If you accept that the advantage of an early wildcard is even bigger now, then you can be a bit more flamboyant with your opening squad.

I answered above, but the last two seasons I have absorbed a few early hits to build team value and rocketed up the rankings later in the season thanks in part to my canny use of wildcards in the second half. Why would I absorb those early hit this season if I can't play two wildcards in the second half of the season? It'll likely push me to adopt a different strategy, probably one which most other serious players already use. Vive la difference!

Triple captain means that one player can score 100+ on his own without doing anything completely spectacular.

Midfielder gets a hattrick and cleanie in one game = 21 pts. Just needs a goal and a couple of assists in the other match to be pretty much there.

Yes it is, of course. But it's believable. Four goals in two games will happen this season a lot.

Without triple captain then even successive hattricks in a DGW wouldn't get you to 100 (unless you're a defender and that's stretching it a lot).

Not if Cabaye is going to Palace. I think Özil is the safest bet for Arsenal, so I'd downgrade that other 4.5 defender to a 4.0, downgrade Ivanovic to Courtois (replace Myhill with a WBA defender) and upgrade Walcott to Hazard, Yaya to Özil.

4 points for a clean sheet is more than a couple of saves and maybe 1 bonus point...unless you're expecting Myhill to become a save king in matches and rack up bonus...because if so you're better off looking at Schmeichel or Speroni IMO

Yaya is short term. A bit puntish but I'm hoping for the set pieces in the first few while Aguero is out.

All that at 8.5m is good value

Gonna WC early anyway as usual.

I personally chose Yaya because if you look at the stats he had a pretty good season last year too...a couple more minutes and he'd probably be closer to his peak season's score. Considering all the things that had affected his game (brother's death, contract stuff, ACON) a score like that is decent. Expect him to step it up this year.

Also I don't think I will ever be able to recover mentally if my triple captain goes off after 30min injured in a DGW lol

yeah but I'll make sense to use it in a DGW, I can just imagine having snacks ready about to watch Manchester City vs Watford with Aguero (Triple C) and getting ready for a big score and then 10 minutes later he falls awkwardly

Not seeing much love for Ramsey which is surprising.

Can't see any 4m defenders at all which is a bit annoying as they help to boost funds elsewhere.

Seeing a lot of love for Sakho which is also surprising when you consider they have a new manager who may have different ideas and they are away to Arsenal first.

      Oh, first draft....

      Schmeichel / Ruddy

      Terry / Koscienly / Morgan / O Shea / Micah Richards

      Hazard / Walcott / Ramsey / Ritchie / Albrighton

Rooney / Jay Rodriguez / Wilson.

Any criticisms? Got 1.5m left over for Aguero although I would need to find another 1m from somewhere.

You won't like this but that 1 million is pretty attainable from getting Courtois (replace Schmeichel with Morgan) or Azpilicueta for Terry...:/

That's where I'm looking at it tbh or changing Walcott to Mane but I was hoping to give both of those the first 3 weeks to decide who to lose as don't really want Aguero until GW4.

I've got a nearly identical draft team at the moment and I am currently thinking to downgrade one of Walcott/Ramsey to Hendo.

I do not know if I am being thick here, but I do not understand this thing ..

We can't play our wildcard on the same GW of the three new chips?

from what I understand wildcard affects the transfers tab and the chips affect the my team tab

    1. PSEBJ27
      • 8 Years

You've got it. You can't wildcard and use a chip in the same week. You can't use two chips in a week either.

It's the same game. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that playing the WC in the transfer section will disable your pick team buttons. The players you transfer in appear there after all.

Pretend you have 5 chips. You have 37 GWs to use them as GW1 should be basic.

Here's another thought for triple captain. If you're in a ML with manager of the month prizes, a successful triple captain could well be enough to clinch it with an otherwise average performance.

Not if they've already used it!

If it's later in the season and it looks unlikely that you'll win the league, triple captain could be a good way of ensuring you at least win some prize.

I think they'll make it visible, since you can tell by looking through GW's. For example triple captain makes the C or VC white instead of black, 2-5-3 is easy to pick obviously and the bench one also changes the appearance of your team.

So you'd think they'd make it easy for us
