The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Southampton

The sceptics were circling ahead of Ronald Koeman’s first year in charge of Southampton after former manager Mauricio Pochettino was followed through the exit door by a number of first-team regulars. The Dutchman proved them wrong, though, and after dipping into the transfer market to acquire the likes of Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Ryan Bertrand, he guided the Saints to a seventh-place finish – one spot higher than they’d managed under the Argentine in 2013/14.

In this members article, we cast an eye back over Koeman’s first campaign at St Mary’s, analysing the chief goal threats and creators and comparing their overall displays to Pochettino’s only full year at the helm.

      lucy I remember you saying tadic missed a lot of minutes at the end of season due to niggles. when fully fit are tadic and mane both in the preferred starting line up together? what side do each play on? cheers

      Swap Chadli for Hendo. Also, frontline is too expensive. Take out one of them and add that money to another position to give the team more balance.

      Everton have a hard start. Swap them out. Get 2 first GK that have good home and away rotation. Midfield is strong, but no Hazard? And who will be on the bench? Siggy? Hendo? Maybe you can find a cheaper midfielder to sit on you bench, giving you more budget..

      I doubt that, but whether he is considered to become a regular in the first season already interests me a lot. I think that should be the plan, as he would not have had interest to change Barcelona youth to Sunderland youth.

          Money would be a secondary matter here, though. If it was to play for the youth teams, he'll get better coaching and bigger games with Barca's youth. I'm very sure it was in talks that he will join the first team, something Barca can't offer. That doesn't mean he'd walk straight into the starting lineup (I now realise that you didn't say this either), but he should get some starts this season already. Very interesting player imo.
