The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Southampton

The sceptics were circling ahead of Ronald Koeman’s first year in charge of Southampton after former manager Mauricio Pochettino was followed through the exit door by a number of first-team regulars. The Dutchman proved them wrong, though, and after dipping into the transfer market to acquire the likes of Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Ryan Bertrand, he guided the Saints to a seventh-place finish – one spot higher than they’d managed under the Argentine in 2013/14.

In this members article, we cast an eye back over Koeman’s first campaign at St Mary’s, analysing the chief goal threats and creators and comparing their overall displays to Pochettino’s only full year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Some thoughts on my first draft would be greatly appreciated!

    Schmeichel Hamer

    Ivanovic Morgan Mings O'Shea Baker

    Hazard Silva Depay Henderson Wanyama

    Costa Lukaku Sakho

    Major concerns are:

    No Arsenal
    Sakho
    Is defence strong enough?

      Personally what I'd do is:
      1) Depay -> Ozil
      2) Costa -> Rooney
      3) Upgrade Baker

Looking rather good - very strong midfield.

Lukaku should be a bigger concern than Sakho imo, particularly given the fixtures, I actually think Sakho is a good price.

If you want Arsenal cover then I'd swap Depay for Ramsey or Ozil.

Would get cech or Kos as Arsenal def cover.

      Haz to Fab for funds.

Would try to squeeze benteke, Rooney or Kane for lukaku (horrible fixtures).

Assume you don't think aguero will start? If he does, go silva to arsenal mid and costa - agu

Quite happy with this team I must say, might even leave it alone for a few days.

    Butland, Myhill
    Ivanovic, Cresswell, Mertesacker, Coates, Morgan
    Fabregas, Ozil, Ramsey, Ki, Fletcher
    Rooney, Costa, Sakho

Will almost certainly be using WC within the first 5 weeks or so and not bothered on having no City for the first 3 weeks.

I can't speak for everybody but for me this is very much a temporary thing, just until the cheap form has been uncovered and value becomes less of a problem. I don't think many would go without Hazard for any real length of time.

    Mignolet, Krul
    Alderweireld, Azpilicueta, Mertesacker, Richards, Morgan,

True JK, but I can't help picking goal scoring mids and defenders 😀

However, there would be flexibility in the mids and defender so if you wanted to get on a bandwagon that wasn't a forward, you would have to use 2 transfers anyway.

          fair enough

as we discussed essentially if you put in

Ivan, Haz, Kun and Silva/Rooney you have room for one more in the mid priced bracket

It's then where you spend it

Is anyone else out there looking to rotate their last two midfield slots? I noticed that Atsu and Abdi rotate perfectly and cost a combined 10.5. There seems to be a gulf between the 7.0M and 5.5M where little value can be found (with the exception of the palace mids - which is a wait and see situation).

My question - Is Atsu nailed? Seems like a nice option at 5.5

City have great fixtures from GW4 onwards, so it would be too risky (or madness) to go without him.

Oh. That makes things clearer. Cheers.

I've took the decision (with nearly 3 weeks to change) to not have Kun, Costa, Fab, or Sanchez. And no money to upgrade.

I guess on that note, I might have to look forward to a WC depending on forms.

22 asked for places. 1 confirmed drop out. 20 maximum available.

Had a few people say they will be joining at some point. At I guess I'd say we will probably end up on around 15. If it's nowhere near that then I may have to cancel. Hopefully it doesn't come to that though. We will see.

I'm looking to add a VS page to my spreadsheet. If you haven't seen it here it is - http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/07/10/new-players-analysis/

So which players are you struggling between?

For instance, Mata and Yaya Toure.

I'll them add them to the spreadsheet so that you can compare their bang for buck!

Lengthy post but I figured that I'd explain my team rather than just post a RMT:

      GOALKEEPERS:
Ruddy - looks good value for 4.5, should amass save points and the odd CS
Myhill - not the best rotation with Norwich but also not the worst. Always been a fan of two playing goalkeepers. Also the cheapest route into WBA defence that I'm aware of, the Hennessey speculation is pretty much void until/unless he signs for the club, which he hasn't yet.

      DEFENCE:
      Ivanovic - no explanation necessary
Koscielny - Arsenal should be tighter at the back with Cech and Kos will rack up BPS
Williams - sure starter and rotates well with Leicester
Huth - goal-threat, seemingly nailed, rotates well with Swansea
4.0 - intend to play Ivanovic and Kos at all times, and rotate the other two

      MIDFIELD:
Hazard - FPL gold, could have even bigger points haul this season, great captaincy material
Walcott - explosive if he's playing, willing to take that risk while Alexis is out at least
Henderson - could push on in Gerrard's absence, usually steady points return, on pens?
Ritchie - great output in the Championship, worth the risk with Bournemouth's early fixtures
Bentaleb - no great 4.5 picks but will continue to look for the best of those over pre-season

      FORWARDS:
Aguero - Once he's in the XI he's a must have. Will have Rooney as a placeholder until GW4 or so if there are any doubts.
Gomis - finished last season rather well, should get the service with Siggy and Ayew behind
Sakho - decent goalscorer at a good price, would rather shell out the extra 1.0 than have Deeney

With all this in mind, would anybody recommend any changes?

      General question for the community:

Is there a place where I can sort player data to find points per start? Or at least the match-by-match breakdown? I was doing it manually before the FPL database turned over for the new season, but now the match data is no longer available.

Hopefully this can turn into a community article assessing players based on points-per-start rather than PPG, since substitute appearances before players cement their place or returning from injury skew average. For example, Harry Kane's PPG last season was 5.6, but that includes a number of substitute appearances early in the season. If you only calculate based on his starts, that number goes up to 6.3.

      Many thanks!

      First Draft, thoughts?

      Schmeical Hamer
      Vlaar, PVA, Francis, Cresswell,Kosc
      Haz, Ramsey, Wanyama, Cabaye, Hendo
      Costa, Rooney Sakho

Still undecided on that last MID and ST spot

        Looks good, but:
Vlaar isn't in the game as far as I'm aware
Back four will be a rotation nightmare with frequent points on the bench (why not get one 4.0?)
Don't think Cabaye will justify price in a withdrawn role at a poor side with bad fixtures
Make sure Sakho is a starter under Ranieri

Is it worth having Chelsea or Arsenal defenders and ending up with 8.5 million midfielders

      OR

Is is worth having an ultra cheap defense with 3 x nailed on 4.5's and 2 x 4.0mil

The latter can afford me a midfield and strikeforce of:
Depay, Hazard, Sanchez (with Walcott as place holder), Sinclair and Sterling.
      Aguero Wilson Sakho

I prefer a bit more balance than that, but that's personal preference. I also find it's easier to downgrade an expensive defender or two to upgrade attack rather than re-structure the distribution of money in your team. If more than one of your defenders gets injured, or isn't nailed on, then you've got to take -4 hits or use your WC to restructure your team.

Repost: Anyone know how good the AVL left back is? Jordan Amavi from Nice ? Signed for 12Mil euros.

On that this is my team for the moment.

      Ruddy - Myhill

      Ivan - Cedric - Prodl - Francis - Targett

Haz - Mane - Sterling - Ritchie - Fletcher (thinking of going Payet after gw1)

      Costa - Roon - Deeney

Will need to get AGU if he doesnt start. Need someone from MCI to start with, but willing to toss Sterling out for another good option?

Would love some input on this draft:

      Schmeichel, Hamer
      Koscielny, Azpilicueta, Sakho, Cedric, Coates
      Hazard, Walcott, Mané, Henderson, Wanyama
      Aguero, Sakho, Deeney

      ---

      A couple of notes:

      * The LIV / SOT / SUN rotation behind Koscielny & Azpilicueta gives me the following fixtures:

new, BOU/NOR, SWA, NOR, wba, NOR, AVL, WHM, LEI, NEW, BOU, CPL, STO, STO, AVL, WAT, wat, LEI

      * If Aguero is not fit to start the season, I will put Rooney in, with money in the bank to transfer Aguero in at a later date.

      * I know there are question marks over Walcott's gametime. However, when he plays his attacking are stats are brilliant. If pre-season suggests he may not be nailed on, then I will put Ozil in, and therefore have 0.5m to spend elsewhere.

      * My key concern at the moment is whether I have spent too much on defence, to the detriment of my strikers. I'd be interested to hear views on that, along with any other criticisms.

You don't know. None of us do. 😛 As we're about to sign a ball-playing defensive midfielder and bought a similar RB, are still in the market for a CB and performed a bigger reconstruction job last season, you really can't tell. Last season, Forster, Toby and Bertrand were new and Clyne reclaimed the RB spot he'd lost to Chambers. We have a record of recovery. The new players make Saints investment a risk but not a certain failure.
