The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Southampton

The sceptics were circling ahead of Ronald Koeman’s first year in charge of Southampton after former manager Mauricio Pochettino was followed through the exit door by a number of first-team regulars. The Dutchman proved them wrong, though, and after dipping into the transfer market to acquire the likes of Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Ryan Bertrand, he guided the Saints to a seventh-place finish – one spot higher than they’d managed under the Argentine in 2013/14.

In this members article, we cast an eye back over Koeman’s first campaign at St Mary’s, analysing the chief goal threats and creators and comparing their overall displays to Pochettino’s only full year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Myhill Hennessy
    Ivan Kos Morgan Williams Bennet
    Hazard Ramsey Henderson Ki Bentaleb
    Aguero Benteke Sakho

RMT please ... There's a couple of ifs and buts in there (Benteke Hennessy)

midfield is world class. Can you do Aguero and Benteke to Costa and Rooney?

Don't fancy Azpilicueta + cash? Otherwise a decent looking draft, and well balanced. I was a bit surprised by seeing Ki there, but looked at his goalscoring stats from last season and was just as surprised, so fair enough!

Is 9m for my 2 keepers too much? I have Courtois and Gomes therefore I don't have to get a Chelsea defender. Planning to play Games for the 2nd week and Courtois for the rest until GW4 where I will wildcard. Good enough plan?

Wouldn't mind some input on this lot. My gut says I need to beef up my strikers a bit.

    Pantilimon, Hennessey
    Azpilicueta, Koscielny, Sakho, Cedric, Morgan
    Hazard, Walcott, Henderson, Bolasie, Wanyama
    Aguero, Sakho, Berahino

    (Notes:

    * SOT / LIV / LEI rotation for 3rd defender yields some very kind fixtures:

SUN, BOU, wat, NOR, AVL, NOR, AVL, nor, LEI, SOT/CPL, BOU, WAT, STO, SWA, AVL, WBA, wat, LEI

    * If Aguero is not fit, I will put in Rooney with money in the bank to get Aguero later.

    * Unsure about Bolasie due to fixtures, but I note that CPL scored against several of the big teams in the second half of the season under Pardew).

Looks good! Walcott is ofc an enigma, but could be a massive pay off!
I have your thoughts exaclty about Bolasie/Cabaye.

I dont really fancy Cedric as I am unsure with the quaiity Shampton lost in defence + midfield + EL + that theyre not really a high scoring team would benefit a fullback!

Are you planning to play 4-4-2?

    Myhill (hamer)
    Azpi, Morgan, Francis, Bassong
    Haz, Silva, Ramsey, Bolasie, Ritchie
    Costa, Benteke, Deeney

Costa started the season so well last year I'm going for him over Kun at the start but may switch to Kun and downgrade Ramsey if Kun bangs them in.

Summer, 2009, Wolves had secured promotion to the PL, in no small part to the goals of one particular striker. "Ebanks-Blake, he'll tear it up!" they said. Kinda fear it might be the same this year with the likes of Wilson and Deeney.

    1. jimmanu

Wilson maybe... but I get the feeling with deeney being captain and on pens the team revolves around him. May be wrong only time will tell.

Aye, time will tell indeed. I'd love it if they did well, and I'm sure I'll give at least one of them a spot in my team some time, I just like to not expect too much from these sorts of players given how spectacularly it can fail.

Surprised at just how much Williams love.
first up away to Chelsea coming off a 3300min season for 0 goals 0 assists. No thanks. Not the sort of start to the season I fancy.

Fernandez a much better swans option anyway for 5 if u need someone to rotate with Leicester. 900 less minutes for tick over 20 less points and almost as many bonus points!

I don't have Ivan, but good rotations for a 3-5-2 formation. This might be the one...

    Guzan - Myhill
    Morgan - O'Shea - Clyne - Richards - Alderweireld
    Chadli - Ramsey - Y.Toure - Hazard - Henderson
    Rooney - Benteke - Deeney

Toure or Ramsey out in GW4 to provides funds for

    Rooney -> Kun

        Mine at the moment.

        Guzan - Myhill

        Alderweireld - Azpi - O'shea - Senderos - Yoshida

        Yaya - Hendo - Haz - Cazorla - Anya

        Deeney - Rooney - Benteke

        3-4-3

Have money in the bank Cazorla < Sanchez

I feel i need Chelsea defender, but maybe i dont

I have many of the same players, but am not sure about Yoshida, Senderos, and Yaya. I have Benteke, too, and am not sure about him either as he could move to a team with a lesser role.

Is Yoshida nailed on? If so, will SOTON be a stingy as last year? I think not.
          Is Senderos nailed on?
Yaya is certainly a good price, but he does not seem to inspire confidence with his lazy style of play. I would take Mata over Yaya.

In general don't worry about "coverage", worry about points.

Having said that, Chelsea are solid all around so coverage should equal points from them.

A lot also depends on funds/rotation/formation for me. Made a lot of bad choices last season with unproven bandwagons, not looking into the future for fixtures and potential transfers. Trying to have season long expensive players in the beginning only to have them get injured and not have a plan for subbing.

I think you have to look at fixtures and rotation for as much of the season as possible to keep your attack bolstered with big guns and attempt to have some cheap all-season players (or as much of the season as possible) for rotation.

Then again, you can do all the analysis you want but things can still go up in the air! Injuries, rotation risks, loans, transfers.

Guzan is also playing very well, and every match, in the Gold Cup. I am not sure if that is a good thing for form, or a bad thing for fatigue. For a keeper, I'd say good thing.

Wouldn't you want Yaya for GW4 onwards if you already had him?

Arsenal's early fixtures also good, so you'd be getting rid of 2 good mids to get Aguero in.

I would downgrade Henderson and use the cash for Aguero and keep Rambo and Yaya.

          No worries.

Looking at your team again, I think you may be better served dropping Senderos and getting a Leicester CB (Huth or Morgan) for £4.5. Yoshida will lose his place after a few weeks so he'll need replacing too.

I reckon if you want £4.0 defenders then Norwich are the team to go for. They don't have many to begin with and after all their obvious 4 starters @ £4.5m the rest are £4.0.

At some point Norwich starting defs are going to get injured/dropped so the replacements are £4.0 and will have to step in and play.

I seem to switch every day. I like Chadli's ppg from last year, but he did not seem to consistently play the full 90 minutes. Hendo really excelled without Gerard, and he seems to maybe now have an opportunity to be more involved on the attack. I currently on Hendo because of this and the set piece, penalties thing.

Ok theres a decent spine there, but a few pointers:
Too much spent in GKs. How about Cech and a 4.0 with Cech playing every week?
Don't know about King, even if he will play.... I would downgrade Silva and upgrade King.

Clyne is unnecessary, I'd drop him. King and Emnes are both issues too, and Rangel isn't assured starts. Do you have any money in the bank? It doesn't look like you've used all of it, because you have one good goalie, three good defenders, three good midfielders, and one good striker
