Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Mid-Price Forwards

We roll out the penultimate article in our assessment of this year’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this evening, After casting an eye over the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders, Premium Defenders, Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders, Premium Midfielders and
Budget Forwards, we analyse the available options in the mid-price bracket up front.

Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck carries a 7.5 price tag after scoring just four times in 25 appearances in his debut season at the Emirates. With Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott surely ahead of him in the pecking order for the lone striker role, in addition to fierce competition for the attacking midfield slots, the England international may not see enough playing time to be regarded as a genuine Fantasy prospect. Welbeck is also a slight doubt for the start of the new season with a knee injury that has taken longer to heal than expected.

Chelsea pair Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao have both been priced at 7.5, though their pitch time is likely to be determined by Diego Costa’s ability to remain free from injury and suspension. Bearing in mind that Costa was restricted to just 24 starts last term, there’s certainly a chance that at least one of the pair will benefit at some point, though for now, neither looks worth gambling over, given how precious our three striker slots are. Remy could be worth considering if a mooted move to Palace or West Ham transpires, though.

Despite what was a pretty disappointing campaign last year, Romelu Lukaku appears to be one of the stronger options in the mid-price bracket. The Belgian international comes in at 8.0 this season and may benefit from only having the Premier League to focus on, having played a major role in Everton’s Europa League campaign last term. His goal conversion rate of 9.5% is a concern, however, while the Toffees tough opening schedule mean it’s only when the fixtures ease from Gameweek 11 that he may begin to feature on our radars. Nonetheless, Lukaku looks a secure option – he started 32 times last term, a tally bettered by only four other forwards, whilst he’s now scored at least ten times in all three of his seasons in the top-flight.

Over on the red half of Merseyside, summer signing Danny Ings and Mario Balotelli have been valued at 7.5 and 7.0 respectively. With Daniel Sturridge ruled out for the opening part of the season, it remains to be seen who Brendan Rodgers will opt for up front, though, after the Reds triggered Christian Benteke’s release clause at Villa. Owned by over 14% of FPL managers, Ings was fielded on the right of a front three in Liverpool’s previous friendly but with Rodgers full of options in the final third, he looks far from certain to lead the line in the season ahead. After a disappointing first year at Anfield, Balotelli looks set for the exit door if the Reds can find a buyer.

Another two forwards that could be set to leave the Premier League are Manchester City duo Edin Dzeko (7.5) and Stevan Jovetic (7.0). The Bosnian striker has been linked with a move to Roma, while former Fiorentina man Jovetic could also be set for a return to Serie A. Both look to be behind Sergio Aguero and Wilfried Bony in the pecking order, while latest addition Raheem Sterling can also play in various roles across the forward line. Even if Dzeko or Jovetic don’t depart this summer, it is very unlikely either will be viable Fantasy options in the forthcoming campaign.

In just 22 appearances last season, Papiss Cisse (6.5) managed to score 11 times and ended the campaign with a goal conversation rate of 24.4%, second only to Diego Costa’s 26.3%. New boss Steve McClaren utilised a 4-3-3 at Derby last year and has rolled out a 4-2-3-1 system in both matches in charges so far, suggesting a lone striker formation will be favoured. Bearing in mind that the Magpies have been heavily linked with moves for Aleksandar Mitrovic and Charlie Austin, there are still question marks over whether the injury-prone Cisse can remain at the top of the pecking order.

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle and Jay Rodriguez are valued at 8.0 and 7.0 respectively this year and both could provide decent options over the course of the season. Despite a disappointing second half of the 2014/15 campaign, which saw him go on a 14-match scoreless run, Pelle started 37 times last term, more than any other forward, and his physical attributes as a target man should ensure he remains Ronald Koeman’s preferred choice as the lone striker. The more versatile Rodriguez still offers an option on the flanks and, after finally recovering from a year-long knee injury, will be hoping to rediscover the form that saw him net 15 times during 2013/14. Certainly, the Saints’ opening schedule, which pits them against just three of last term’s top three in the first 13 Gameweeks, could barely be kinder and both forwards are already off the mark – Rodriguez has notched twice, whilst Pelle netted in a friendly win over Groningen earlier today.

Coming in at 6.5, fellow Senegal international Mame Biram Diouf is the only Stoke forward in the mid-price category. After scoring 12 goals in the previous campaign, the former United man could be decent value if he can stave off the challenge of new signing Joselu for a starting berth as the lone striker in Mark Hughes’s 4-2-3-1. In terms of goal conversion, Diouf’s 21.4% was fourth among all forwards last year, though his versatility can go against him, with the Potters boss handing him a right flank berth on a number of occasions.

Following Wilfried Bony’s January move to City, it took Bafetimbi Gomis some time to find his best form at Swansea. The France international seemed to improve week-by-week throughout the second half of last season, though, and scored six of his seven goals in his final ten appearances. Now the clear first-choice at the Liberty, with summer signing Eder seemingly offering back-up, Gomis should thrive with the likes of Andre Ayew and Gylfi Sigurdsson providing support from midfield. Available at 7.0, the former Lyon forward – who notched against the likes of Arsenal and City last season – looks one of the more appealing and potentially most consistent options in the mid-price roster. He’s also off the mark this summer, finding the net in a 2-1 win over 1860 Munich earlier tonight.

Saido Berahino was one of last season’s success stories in the budget bracket. After scoring 14 goals, the England U21 has been handed a price hike this time around, though still sets us back a respectable 6.5. The Baggies didn’t create an awful lot of chances last season, ranking 19th out of all 20 Premier League sides for attempts on goal, with more of our Fantasy focus on their reliable defence under Tony Pulis. Nonetheless, a goal conversion rate of 16.3% illustrates how clinical the youngster is in front of goal, though, and after some difficult opening fixtures, spot-kick taker Berahino could provide a viable option as a third forward. The Baggies striker netted in his first appearance of the summer in a friendly win over Charleston Battery earlier this morning.

One of the other stand-out names in this price range is West Ham’s Diafra Sakho, who comes in at 6.5. In an injury-hit campaign that restricted him to 23 appearances, Sakho still netted every 184.1 minutes – that’s sandwiched between Charlie Austin (178.9) and Christian Benteke (192.8), for example. Providing he can steer clear of the treatment room, he should benefit from an attack-minded approach under Slaven Bilic and has four very favourable home matches (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the first seven Gameweeks. With Andy Carroll (6.5) now expected to be out until mid-October due to an ongoing knee injury, Sakho’s eye for goal could be key to ensuring Bilic’s tenure gets off to a profitable start.

    Pantilimon // Hammer

    Ivan // Kos // Martin // Prodl // Francis

    Fab // Mata // Ramsey // Chadli // Anya

    Costa // Rooney // Sakho

This is my squad for opening four GWs, then WC for international break to reassemble with Aguero. Any constructive criticism? I'm unsure on keepers + 3 x 4.5m promoted defs

True enough, the scope is there to wheel in Azpi + Williams and upgrade to Walcott.

Ivan has burned me the last 2 seasons after I chose not to include him at the start and he was banging them in.

        Never again. He owes me.

It would be a shame to be forced into a WC, though.
Ivan,Costa -> 5.0,Aguero will do the trick when the time comes.
I'm not entirely sure about 3x4.5 defs either. But with two nailed-on big hitters, it is not so bad.

One player I haven't seen mentioned in jonjo shelvey? Always looks a decent goal threat and this could be the season he matures and puts in more consistent performances. For 5.5m he looks a decent option

    RMT? £1 ITB

    Courtois
    Williams - Darmian - Fonte
    Cazorla - Hazard - Mane - Ritchie
    Costa - Benteke - Deeney

    Subs: Hamer, Morgan, Johnson(Norwich), Richards

    Thoughts??

1m ITB as a route to Aguero I'm presuming?

My main gripe would be having 2 Soton players - I'm unsure if they'll instantly be a defensive success after such a change around of personnel. I'm also personally going to wait for a coupe of weeks to see if Mane was a flash in the pan.

    TIP OF THE DAY:

If you are an administrator of any leagues, change your league name to an Emoji. (copy and paste from here, for example http://emojipedia.org/face-with-stuck-out-tongue-and-tightly-closed-eyes/)

It will then rename your league to a league name with no characters, and none of your friends will be able to click on it and see which teams are participating.

Particularly useful if you get off to a bad start to the season and don't want to put up with the Monday morning embarrassment at work.

Am I just being foolish not having Aguero and Hazard?

Even if it means I can have the following?

    Boruc Krul
    Ivanovic Huth Bassong Richards Ward
    Walcott Henderson Mata Lens Ki
    Rooney Costa Lukaku

I think you need at least one of them in there. I'm not convinced the rest of your team is actually strong enough to justify missing them out.

Lukaku --> Sakho/Wilson/Deeny to start (his fixtures and form aren't good enough for 8.0m yet).

Then I'd try and upgrade one of the midfield, probably Lens. Not convinced by him just yet.

If I go with Tadic over Mane I have funds in the bank for Aguero in one transfer.

Good idea? Or should I keep Mane?

Tadic goal + assist in last pre season game. Great start last year.
    Mane more explosive?

Tadic seemed to bely his point score thanks to the one monster week he had vs Sunderland. Very patchy returns otherwise. Was he even starting towards the end of the season?

maybe doosra is around, or other WHM fans - whats the deal with sakho? seems like a good player with great productivity - 6.5 is very kind price - and fixtures are great - but what is all those talks linking teh hammers with strikers? is he not seen as the permanent solution upfront? should i go payet instead?

How? I've only seen him in a couple of RMTs out of the hundreds I've seen. I have very high hopes for him this season (he's been in my UFPL team since the start) and his 2 goals last night emphasised his potential.

I've had Payet in my team from the start. You can't ignore his stats from last year. That said, I am having second thoughts now. Mainly due to the fact that he has a court case to attend in Africa in September.

Both should be avoided for all the reasons so far stated

          - Payet - New to the league and expensive for a West Ham player

          - Sakho - New striker arrival limiting game time

        Too many expensive defenders.... 3 x 4.5, 1 x 6, 1 x 7..... not that expensive

those 3 strikers are brilliant. All lone strikers, score most goals for their sides and have great fixtures... what's the problem.

            Ruddy Butland
Azpi Mings Kaboul Prodl Vlaar (If Southampton)
            Hazard Walcott Ozil Depay Milner
            Rooney Sakho Wilson

Ozil and Rooney out for Lens and Aguero at GW3

I like this team. Downgrade Ivan to Azpi and use the 1m for Sakho.
      Allows a great Sakho/Wilson rotation.

I think Aguero is essential if he's fit as he's the best captain option most weeks. Hazard not quite as good a captain option and not very essential in the first few weeks as I don't think their fixtures are that good.

Nice for you to have a bit of a break from it all.

It's easy to catch up on everything with just a week to go. So much change at the moment with new signings - there's really no point signing up too soon.

Yeah I know, too many unknown variables at the moment. A few signings here and there would shake things up. Which is the latest draft you have come up with?

Still early days, but I do like the shape of this one. No Aguero and nothing in the bank to upgrade. May wildcard around week 4 this year. I usually try to hold onto it but let's see.

                  Myhill, Hennessey
                  Darmian, Mertesacker, Huth, Coates, Francis
                  Hazard, Walcott, Mata, Bolasie, Wanyama
                  Rooney, Costa, Wilson

Prepared to downgrade Mertesacker to a 4.5. Just waiting for the right ones to come up. Payet (7.5), Henderson (7.0) and Clasie (5.5) interest me as an alternative to Bolasie (6.5).

Aguero will be eased in, so I don't think that should be that much of a headache.

*Bolasie is a brave pick given the fixtures. United,Arsenal,City,Spurs in the first 6.
*Maybe swap Myhill to someone who rotates with Hennessey to avoid a transfer later?

Also how nailed is Coates? You reckon he is a better pick than O'Shea?

Myhill is there as a safety net, in case Hennessey isn't first choice, because I do like the WBA defence. I may even change Myhill to a 4.0 keeper.

Bolasie is brave and not definite. But the Palace attack under Pardew is underrated IMO.

Don't know how nailed on Coates is, but I'll reassess a few days before the season starts. Could easily change to O'Shea or Kaboul.

                      Thanks for the feedback!

I know that Palace's attack is vastly under-rated, and I am of the belief that they will be the 'overachievers' this season. Having said that, would you call their attack 'fixture proof' just yet?

No problem mate - It's good to kick our off discussions for the start to the season!

Watched the Saints pre season game yesterday vs Gronnigen

    - Soares is going to an FPL monster (i bet now he's at a top 4 clun in next 2 years)
    - Tadic played behind Pelle and looks back to where he was start of last season
    - Clasie looks good and will pick up points (esp assists)
    - J-Rod still finding his feet after lay-off- not sure he will be 1st choice start of season

His (Tadic)assist for Pelle was outrageous. Potential but 7.0 is steep when you compare him with hendo and Milner

What makes Soares an FPL monster? Did he score a lot of goals? Make a lot of assists? Keep a clean sheet? Or just do lots of things that would score him bonus points?

I am wary of Southampton defenders this year because of all the players they've sold, leading to a weaker team and fewer clean sheets. I probably made the same exact post last season though and I was proven wrong.

    Defensive News.

Panti hasnt played a game for us this season yet due to injury, this should be rectified soon tho.
Pickford and Mannone have been sharing game time.
The RB position is unclear. Jones will more likely to play than Matthews atm imo The CB's are unclear, Coates is only just joing the squad after CA. It should be 2 from 4 but i reckon kaboul is the front runner
If only go near PVA or Panti if he gets a few games under his belt.

I just dont see it happening. Might be completely wrong, but he is too inconsistent with performances since ... ever. I am just not a big fan. Would rather have Moses play than him.

    Good morning FFS

Have two questions I hope someone have the answer of:

    - Most nailed Norwich defender?
    - Do Kaboul go straight into the starting 11?

    Cheers

Russell Martin is the skipper at Norwich, he could be a good choice, think he sometimes chips in with the odd goal too!

I would say Olsson but he is injured currently so keep an eye on him, if he is injured go with Martin or Bassong if Norwich don't sign anyone.

Saying that both Martin and Olsson got 5 assists last year with Olsson getting one goal and Martin getting two so maybe go Martin

    RMT please guys:

    Butland / Myhill
    Clyne / Bellerin / Cedric / Huth / Francis
    Hazard / Walcott / Chadli / Ritchie / B.Johnson
    Costa / Rooney / Deeney

I know some people will think too much in defence, but you do need to spend some money on that part of your team! That's what the budget options in midfield are for and I think Chadli and Ritchie are both bargain buys.

Any other thoughts? No City or Chelsea defence could be an issue!

    Thanks guys

Not bad at all. I would also agree on Bellerin, slight worry with game time

Depay might not play a full game to begin with, but could be a good choice later on. There are better choices than Saylor I think, plenty to choose from in the new teams actually.

With that team definitely B mate.

What about Hazard, Sakho (or other cheaper striker) then spend a little more in defence?

Maybe B with a punt on J.Rod, he's been looking good in pre-season.

I would go for Farbregas and Wilson and then upgrade Ki to Henderson, Milner or Tadic

This seems like a great option tbh. Would not like to have KI to start with due to possible game time issue.

From last season stats averaged for 1st half:
      Fab : 2 goals + 10 assists = 40 points
      Kane :10 goals + 2 assists = 46 points

      Hazard : 7 goals + 5 assists = 50 points
      7 mil striker (example - berahino) : 7 goals + 1 asssist = 31 point

So both look equally good .
Fab + kane just tips over but will be compensated by hazards bonus points, but finding the best 7 mil striker in form might be difficult .

So i would go with A
