Moving Target

Moving Target – Morgan Schneiderlin

On the same day that Manchester United announced the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin was also confirmed as a Red Devil. After completing a deal for the combative Frenchman, Louis van Gaal explained the reasons behind his latest acquisition:

“Morgan is a player from the Premier League so he can cope with the Premier League. Our selection was not in balance and I have already mentioned that I want to make the balance with midfielders, so you could expect that I shall buy two holding midfielders. And Morgan Schneiderlin is the type that I think can play in our system and in our philosophy. Manchester United only buy players who can make a contribution for that. We are not buying just for buying.”

The History

Schneiderlin worked his way up the youth ranks at RC Strasbourg, penning his first professional contract in 2005. The French international managed just five appearances with the Alsace club, before being sold to Southampton in the summer of 2008 following Strasbourg’s relegation to the second tier of French football.

The combative midfielder found himself in and out of the line-up during his debut campaign with the Saints, producing zero attacking returns across 23 starts. In the wake of Southampton’s relegation to League One, he cemented a regular berth in the 2009/10 season, serving up one goal and two assists in 37 appearances.

Following the south coast outfit’s promotion back to the Championship for the 2011/12 campaign, Schneiderlin featured in all but four of their league ties, tallying two goals and three assist in 29 starts. A second-place finish gained the Saints entry into the top flight, where the he continued to flourish; having notched five goals and one assist in 36 outings, Schneiderlin was honoured as the Player’s Player and Fans Player of the Year.

In his previous two campaigns at St Mary’s Stadium, he chalked up six goals and three assists over 59 appearances, with ligament injury and a torn abductor muscle restricting him to 24 starts in the 2014/15 season.

Schneiderlin made his debut for France’s senior squad on June 8, 2014 in an 8-0 friendly win against Jamaica. Less than three weeks later, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps started him in a World Cup group clash against Ecuador. In all, Schneiderlin has earned nine caps on the international stage but is yet to score.

The Prospects

Schneiderlin’s arrival at Old Trafford – allied with the recruitment of Bastian Schweinsteiger – has furnished Van Gaal with a wealth of excellent midfield options. Factor in the impressive late-season form of Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, and there is a myriad of viable set-ups that could exploit the Red Devils’ new-found strength.

With Van Gaal likely to operate with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Schneiderlin can be expected to sit in front of the back-four as Van Gaal attempts to bring a better balance to a side that managed just 11 clean sheets in the previous campaign – just one more than relegated pair Hull and Burnley.

In terms of his individual Fantasy worth, Schneiderlin hardly set the world alight with four goals and one assist in 2,186 minutes for Saints last term, yet his 5.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game could entice some investors who are reluctant to invest heavily in United’s premium options.

Surprisingly, Schneiderlin fashioned shots (one per 76.7 minutes) at a similar rate to Mata (73.2 minutes) last year and has wasted no time in settling into his new surrounds, having scored on his United debut last week. In terms of creativity, it’s clear he is no deep-lying playmaker in the mould of Cesc Fabregas – the Frenchman provided just 20 key passes in 26 appearances in 2014/15, though his minutes per key pass (115) was still far quicker than Carrick’s 191.1, for example.

One look at the stats highlights what the new boy will mainly bring to Old Trafford. In his three seasons in the Premier League, Schneiderlin’s ball-winning ability was fundamental to the Saints’ style of play. In 2012/13, where he missed just two matches, he was first amongst Premier League midfielders for attempted tackles (182), successful tackles (108) and interceptions (139), whilst he sat third for successful tackles in each of the last two campaigns (2013/14, with 87 and 2014/15, with 79) despite his pitch time being somewhat restricted due to injury.

It may well be, then, that his determined displays in the centre of the park will boost United’s defensive prospects more than anything else. Given that no Red Devils defender made 30 or more appearances last year, though, many Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Van Gaal’s backline from the off unless the remaining pre-season line-ups suggest greater consistency of selection.

In terms of fixtures, the opening schedule could certainly be a lot kinder for Van Gaal’s troops, though. United play six of last year’s top eight in the first ten Gameweeks, suggesting that Schneiderlin’s defensive duties will be key in the first couple of months. The Frenchman may well struggle to earn our attention if, as expected, he’s mainly employed to break up opposition attacks and provide the platform for Mata, Depay and Wayne Rooney to wreak havoc further up the field.

Question: can some one tell me one player that has performed better from an FPL perspective since joining Liverpool under Rogers...?

Everyone who went there last season flopped FPL points wise.

I hold fears for Milner and Tekkers FPL output

Milner will excel ... he doesn't need managing as he's already a gun. He'll thrive this year and has the ambition. workrate and skills to excel at any club. He never got much of a chance at City, but when he did he was fantastic, i really rate him.

I just don't know about Tekkers, he'll be rotated a bit which might impact his a) confidence, b) potential for output and c) confidence.

It is most definitely Roger's Acid Test year though, if they don't finish top 4 there'll be an angry mob with pitch forks an torches ready to chase him into the Mersey.

Milner will take a fair share corners that's for sure. (Took a few during preseason) And for free kicks, wouldn't be surprised if he takes some of them by GW 4 (R. Firmino will take most of them, trust me)

In 2013/14 he scored about double the amount of points (197 to 99) in just under double the amount of minutes (2269 to 1254). Funnily enough he scored exactly double the amount of goals (22 to 11).

Lets hope Benteke can at least maintain his FPL output this season for all those with him in their teams

    Which one ?

    A. Rooney and Ritchie
    B. Benteke and Depay/Yaya/Mane

    My thoughts;

A; Both absolutely nailed on, both key players in everything those teams do.
Considering A only if United doesn't sign any new strikers, and especially if Rooney on pens. Rooney can easily be upgraded to Aguero if needed.

B; A more balanced alternative, great players and good value for money for the whole season...but will they play full 90 mins or not. And how do they fit into their new teams (Benteke, Depay). Mane wasn't that consistent last season, despite of the mania in this site.

    Thanks.

Yep, I figured out that too...Aguero and Benteke might be the way to get Aguero in...

I'm a bit worried about Rooney, would like to see he's got the form. If not on penos or set pieces, and if United still struggles in attack like last year...he could be a bit expensive. Depay or Mata could be better value if they are nailed on.

If they don't sign another striker he will be alone up top. The last time that happened he exploded.

Not sure benteke will be a fast starter. Pool don't play to his style and will take time

in previous seasons elite keepers like hart or cech have been 6.0 or 6.5, now we have mig for 5 and cech / courtois / de gea / hart for 5.5, imo this should be capitalized and therefore forget the 'cheap' rotation which never works anyway. cheapest rotation is only 0.5 cheaper than premium keeper + 4.0.

defenders, on the other hand. i think ivanovic is too expensive at 7 when you can have some premium stuff at 5.5. the gap is bigger here than it used to be. in the keepers the gap is smaller than it used to be.

    1. andyinasia
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

You definitely need to rethink your strategy re keepers. I agree a 5.5 or even 5.0 with a non-playing 4.0 is a safeish bet this year. In addition, the increase in baps for saves could mean that your 4.5 mid/lower-table keep who's kept busy might score as well as your premium keeper who has fewer saves to make.

      1. Caine & Co.
        • 13 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

it's true mid-low-table keepers score more When they keep a clean sheet. this has always been the case, now with some added bonus maybe. still, the best keeper combination is the one keeping most clean sheets. panti for example was awesome last season but there was no point in rotating him. he got more clean sheets away than at home. i let go of rotation two seasons ago and never looked back, it was awful. i think im going for de gea this time, he tends to get some saves.

    2. Ser Davos
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

But that's compensated with 4.5 defenders now the new base price.

However, I do think 5.5 goalkeepers should be considered. I know cheap goalkeepers, 3-4-3 etc. is supposedly always the way to go but the slight adjustment in prices at the back means we shouldn't be too hasty to jump to conclusions.

Yeah, I'm on Courtois atm. People are saying the price decrease is due to the increase in BPS for saves, but looking at that excellent article posted a few weeks back, the impact is pretty small.

The change was brought in after the Arsenal v us game end of the season when Pants made about 8 saves in nil nil draw and two Arsenal defs got baps ahead of him for passes complete

Yes, but that is one of only a few games in which Pants would have picked up bonus points under the new system. This excellent article (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/07/14/fpl-bonus-point-changes-winners-and-losers/) showed that Pants would have scored 10 extra bonus points, while Courtois would have scored 4. That's only a six-point turnaround and I'm not sure Pants can replicate.

The more I think about it. The more it's pointless saving money for kun. Maximise your points and team right from the off and worry about kun from week three. It's arguably a much better tactic to set your team up so you DON'T have to make a transfer in week 2 then leave cash in the bank and plan to do so.

I also arrived at that solution. I am even thinking that, once Aguero is firing and I can give him the armband, why not go for Ivan, Azpili and Courtois? It means no Hazard, but you can spend that 11.5 elsewhere without losing much value (provided he wouldn't ever be given the armband).

Don't really fancy that, not convinced Courtois provides good value. Plus I can't lose Hazard! 🙂

I'm interested to know why people aren't more interested in Courtois. Only 0.5m more than Pants. I know the BPS for saves have been doubled, but it was really only Pants that would have benefited from that last season. Will he make that many saves in close games again? Yes, there are save points too, but clean sheets are the bread and butter and Courtois will surely be tidying up in that respect... or are you worried about Begovic rotation?

He might be only 0.5m more but that's quite a lot especially for a goalkeeper. Pantilimon outscored Courtois last season with less minutes.

Cheap goalkeepers always seem to provide better value than ones from the top clubs, it's not just about the clean sheets. I'd rather put my money elsewhere.

Not worried about Begovic rotation in the slightest.

Yeah, RMT supports your view. I've never had premium keepers in the past, even when Cech and Reina were scoring big under Mourinho's and Benitez's boring tactics, but mostly because they were so expensive. The new lower pricing justifies a rethink.

When you say £0.5m is a lot for a goalkeeper, do you mean that the points benefit from spending £0.5m on upgrading other positions is greater than the points benefit from spending £0.5m on upgrading your keeper?

Talking of which, this morning I had a Damascus Road-like conversion experience.

I enjoy reading views and tips on FF but have always ignored it all and gone my own way. I've resisted until now this line that you should plan to WC in GW4. I've always put out a squad I think is strong and intend to keep going until a WC becomes a necessity, as late as possible. However, every year I have a howler around GW2, 3 or 4 and end up WCing early anyway. But this time a thread I read this morning changed my mind and now I've put up a squad to focus on the first 3-4 GWs only. Given the opening fixtures then, that means a manical trebling-up on Saints (nb Leicester and Sunderland, together with Norwich and Bournemouth start kindly).
Here's what I've got, please RMT in the light of what I've just explained:

          GK Schmeichel [non-play Hennessey]
DEF Cedric [or Fonte], Huth, Bassong, Francis, O'Shea
MID Fab, Wally, Sterling, Tadic, Matic
          FWD Costa, Rooney, Pelle

          🙂

"Planning" an early wild card is a mite silly. By all means use one if you need to. But picking a team for so short a period is a plan riddled with flaws. That said, it's still not a bad team so...

Arsene Wenger has the cash to buy anyone bar Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and has identified a striker, an Arsenal director claims.

Wenger has consistently said this summer he is only interested in bringing world-class players to the Emirates. But Arsenal director Lord Harris says a new striker has been lined up - and is keen to make the move.

"We get a list of the players that Wenger wants," he told the Daily Mail. "On the list is a centre forward, but I'm not going to tell you who he is.

"Money was tight when we moved to the Emirates but it's a lot freer now. In the accounts, there's over £200m in the bank."

Theres a proven fpl asset, who is on set pieces, plays in the hole, has good fixtures until GW 13(dont just look at GW 1 but expect a nice ppg over the 13 weeks), plays for a side that is top half of the table quality, has no europa and is criminally underpriced considering he has scored 22 goals and 20 assists over the past 6600 minutes(around 74 games) yet no one seems to want him..

I agree, maybe the price and first fixture is not tempting anyone....but Siggy can be a great pick for the whole season, with low ownership...there are many great options at 8.5-9 available of course, which are in a way competing with him.

Gomis and Ayew are not as clinical as Bony which would frustrate Siggy causing more yellows and less assists. Bit far-fetched but it's what I believe will happen. Plus, he's not a bargain like last year. Payet is unproven in the Prem but I'm still willing to bet a lot of money he gets more points than Siggy. Sakho will love having the player with the most created chances in Europe's top 5 leagues and also purely based on the fact that STEWART DOWNING was able to score 160+ last year

I'd go Payet, however monitor siggy closely. If gomis goes to Dubai he may get pushed forward if the jacks decide to save cash.

Gomis looked a lot more comfortable tail end of the season.. Ayew would be a huge improvement over dyer/routledge.. and Montero looks fit again for the other wing. If anything they've improved in class and will only help Siggy. Payet like you said is unproven.. Siggy has proven himself enough in the EPL. Add that to the fact taht Sakho is available at 1 million less than Payet and i'd defo want Siggy over Payet mate. Learnt the hard way over the past 6 years that it's better to start safe and boring 🙂

Siggy is probably a better option than Chadli who has been very popular here....Payet is the one who could be the alternative to Siggy. And Milner maybe, if on set pieces.

Ah you mean because you benched him and he scored points in a tough away game? The fact he scored points in a tough away game is reason enought to own him no?

Considering Cazorla if he stays on pens. Could Arteta return to the starting 11?

I suspect Caz will make way in the starting 11 at some point.

Yes, he was one of their best (if not the best) player last year. But his contract is running out, he is getting on agewise, and they just have soo many options.

With Wilshere and Arteta fit agian (in addition to all of their other mids), I feel the threshold for dropping him is lower. Will obviously be a starter in the beginning of the season though.

does anyone know what happens now that i have 4 city players (had sterling in before he was reclassified)?

will the game tell me i've got too many citeh players as soon as i revisit my transfer section or try to make transfers?

You can keep all 4 but whenever you want to make a transfer you'll be forced to get rid of one of the City players first.

You can stay like that all season making no transfers, or the next transfer you make has to be losing a City player

    Good morning!

    What's your take on this:

    A) Koscielny/4.0 + Wilson
    B) Huth/Francis rotation + Sakho

    Rest of the team:
    Schmeichel/Ruddy
    Azp Cedric ___ ___ 4.0
    Walcott Fab Depay Mane
    Costa Rooney ___

Going to use the WC after GW4.

    Cheers 🙂

    How's this look

    Myhill Hennessey
    azpil Lescott Huth ward targett
    Walcott Mane Ritchie matic Anya
    Costa Rooney kane

4.0 itb to bring in sanchez & aguero for Walcott & Costa

    1. Old
      • 9 Years

      - Too much WBA - fixtures aren't great now, so I would remove Lescott
      - Targett = NO - since you are planning other transfers. I will probably fall 0.1 or 0.2 once Bertrand is back.
      - Matic = Big no. Not a FPL player.
      - Front line = Very good

Would probably not plan TWO transfers. Plan for Aguero maybe, but not both. IMO 🙂

    RMT

    Guzan (Panti)

    Azpilicueta, Clichy, O'Shea (Baker, Koscielny)

    Walcostt, Willian, Henderson, Cabaye (Payet)

    Benteke, Rooney, Lukaku

    0.5itb

my main concern is Willian, anyone good for 7.5m?

      1/2 (Guzan/Myhill?)
      1/3
      0/3
      1/2 = 3/10

Chadli. You need considerably more thought. Imo.
