DugoutFC

Introducing Dugout FC

Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    A) Kane, costa, Sakho
    B) Rooney, costa, deeney
If A I plan on transferring costa to Rooney after gw 1 I'd ideally want both kane and Sakho after gw 1
I'm thinking A to avoid hits although B may give me a better gw 1 score. Will WC gw4. Thoughts?

Don't plan a transfer straight out. If you think Costa will blank for a few weeks after Swansea, don't pick him. I favour Rooney btw.

Because Bolasie is more of a goal threat. Honestly id wait until week 6 when their fixtures become good, then take whomever is scoring well. I think it'll be their striker rather than that crowded midfield.

Hows it going lads, I'm pretty happy with my latest team but still need a bit of advice, any suggestions on who to replace cedric with so I can upgrade Hamer

    Schmeichel (Hamer)
    Cedric Merte Azpi (Huth)(O'Shea)
    Mane Haz Chadli Walcott Hendo
    Rooney Sakho (Berahino)

No stunningly strong looking 4.5's - it's take a punt on Bou/Wat or a punt on Yoshida not being replaced for a while.

Is a Chelsea defender essential? Opinions please. Thinking of downgrading Azpi to spend more in other areas.

Yes. Fixtures apply in a different way for Chelsea. Mourinho will park the bus against good teams and try to slaughter the bad ones. They went big on attack to start last year because they were playing Burnley and Leicester first up. This year I think they'll start defensive.

    Thoughts?

    A) Pelle + Hazard + Kaboul + Schmeichel

    B) Costa + Mane + Huth + Panti

Would be able to rotate Huth, whereas I cannot rotate Schmeichel who I'm afraid may not have great enough fixtures to be able to play week in week out atm.

    Cheers 🙂

I'm having a very similar dilemma! Leaning towards Hazard and Pelle. Tadic and Pelle seem to be connecting week in preseason and that could keep Mane out of the spotlight a bit.

Also I say go with Huth but you can find better value than Pants

Is it worth having only one 4.5m GK so I can upgrade Mert > Koscielny?

What are the best single/double 4.5 keeper options out there?

Milner to me is a Schweini/Schneiderlin/Carrick type of player. He'll grab the odd goal, but better options are available at 7.0, plus it's likely Hendo will have PKs (Tek notwithstanding).

I think Milner will surely get more goals, assists than those 3. Not as much as Coutinho, but he will score. Look at Herrera and how he scored reasonably from the position he plays on the pitch. Similar, imo.

Interesting - I think Rogers will want Hendo as the controller giving Milner more freedom to attack/assist. Penalties possibly are in Hendo's favour though.

Are you happy with Targett not playing beyond GW1/2?
Puncheon doesn't have great fixtures and Cabaye's arrival confuses things.

Ok finally sorted my team (will probably change tomorrow tho tbh)

    Ruddy Rudd
    Azpi Huth O'Shea Francis Baker
    Haz Mane Walcott Chadli Wanyama
    Costa Rooney Sakho

Don't like rotating same team's GKs. Norwich is not the team I'd hang my hat on.
I'd get a different 4.0 def...STaylor maybe? Dunno, if you're not planning on playing him, I guess it doesn't really matter.
Not a fan of Chadli (would get Hendo instead)
      Otherwise looks good.

GKs is my biggest issue I think, no intention of playing the 4.0 def and I'm going to keep an eye on Hendo and Milner

I'm not sure about this Ruddy/Rudd love but there are save points to be had.
Baker probably won't hold a spot but he's probably the best punt for a 4m

I had a Ruddy/Butland rotation before switching to Courtois/Hennessey. Stil wavering, but I have no other Chelsea defenders, so Thibs seems the easy way to get a shutout most GWs.

Couldn't blackmail me into getting a premium keeper

I am not sold on triple Chelsea with those fixtures.

Backing Costa to have a good start considering he should be healthy, Haz will most likely be in my team all season like he was last and I'm a firm believer in always having a chelsea defender hence azpi. Plus having Rooney and Costa gives me options to upgrade to Kun depending on which one is firing the best (or not at all if both are). Just personal preference I guess

Costa + Milner or Hazard + Gomis?

Definitely Hazard, definitely not Gomis. Get Sakho if you don't have him already.

with this setup it's hard to do haz/aguero/sanchez bandwagon in case any of them become essential. maybe downgrade sterling to free up funds.
may need che def instead of clyne/kosc.

Payet to Milner/Hendo/Chadli and get a starting defender to replace Targett.

      Colo???

Will Colo play - rumours of replacement looming.

For GK from the same team, do you always play the back-up keeper? If he doesn't start there is a autosub.

This way you avoid a red card and your player gets to save the penalty.

      Assuming he saves it.

Still ok if he doesn't. Unless he comes on in the first 30 min there is no CS bonus anyway. You still save the red card deduction.

What the hell, I'll throw my team in as well:

    Courtois/Hennessey
    Cedric/Huth/Francis/O'Shea/Williams
    Ritchie/Hazard/Mane/Walcott/Wanyama
    Rooney/Costa/Sakho

Downgrade Courtois, Cedric > Chelsea def, Ritchie > Milner/Hendo/Chadli hahaha

I've been back and forth on Courtois/Azpi but my reading of the bonus allocation favours cheap keeper and better defender.

A cheap Stoke defender would fit nicely into my defense. Are any of their 4.5m guys fairly safe bets to play, or do I need to find another team or another 0.5m?
