Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Thursday

Southampton sweep aside Vitesse Arnhem, thanks to goals from Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Shane Long. Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate net for the Hammers but a lack of discipline costs Slaven Bilic’s side dearly, whilst Patrick Bamford hits a 20-minute hat-trick as Palace put six past Bromley Town.

Southampton 3 Vitesse Arnhem 0

The Saints impressed at both ends of the pitch as Ronald Koeman’s side edged towards the Europa League group stages with a comprehensive win at St Mary’s. Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic (penalty) and substitute Shane Long all found the net, with Sadio Mane supplying a pair of assists before new boy Juanmi teed up Long for the third.

Koeman named Maarten Stekelenburg in goal, with a back-four comprised of Cedric Soares, Maya Yoshida, José Fonte and Matt Targett. Jordy Clasie and Victor Wanyama sat in the double-pivot, whilst Steven Davis, Mane and Tadic Dušan tucked in behind lone striker Pelle. New boy Soares caught the eye with a number of raiding runs down the right, whilst Yoshida was unlucky not to find the net after missing a handful of opportunities.

After the match, Koeman highlighted his key performers:

“Jordy had a good understanding with Victor, who I thought was one of the best players on the pitch in my opinion. Cedric had good movements in the first half. He was dangerous in the attacking position. Maarten made a good save at 2-0 and you always like to have the goalkeeper in that kind of important moment saving the team. Mane was outstanding. He is fast and he had good movements in attack. He’s very difficult to defend in a good way against. He played well.”

The Saints boss conceded that Clasie is a doubt for the season opener at Newcastle after the midfielder was forced off just after the hour mark with a hamstring problem. Given that the return leg against Vitesse is just three days before their trip to St James’ Park, last night’s result may well persuade Koeman to rest some of his key players to avoid further injury headaches.

West Ham 2 AFC Astra Giurgiu 2

Goals from Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate had placed Slaven Bilic’s side in the driving seat before the dismissal of James Collins allowed the visitors to claw back a two-goal deficit.

In terms of team selection, Bilic lined his side up in a 4-3-1-2 set-up, according to the club’s twitter feed. Adrian got the nod in goal, with O’Brien, Collins, Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell in the back-four. Mark Noble, Reece Oxford and Cheikhou Kouyate patrolled the central midfield, with Dimitri Payet (who grabbed the assist for Valencia’s opener) handed the role in “the hole” behind the Ecuadorian and Zarate.

Bilic was unable to call upon suspended pair James Tomkins and Diafra Sakho for this one and will now need to make do without Collins and Joey O’Brien for the return leg next Thursday. The latter earned his third yellow of the tournament before being replaced due to injury, whilst Valencia was also forced off, adding to his manager’s woes.

Post-match, Bilic admitted he was somewhat concerned by Valencia’s injury after the forward – playing his first match since the Copa America – was stretchered off:

“I am worried to be fair. And this is the reason I am unhappy tonight. I am not happy with the result of course but this is not as important as the injury. It looks serious but we won’t know for sure until he has a scan.”

In spite of the draw, though, the Hammers boss confirmed that most of his starters for the Gameweek 1 trip to Arsenal will not take part in next Thursday’s return leg:

“It was the same plan, no matter what the result is, that the majority of the players who will start against Arsenal will not participate in that game. We would like to do both, but the Premier League was and is the priority for us.”

The Croatian faces a real defensive dilemma for the return leg next week, then. With Collins, Tomkins and O’Brien all suspended, he could turn to Reece Burke in light of his above comments. Carl Jenkinson is likely to play in O’Brien’s absence, though the former cannot feature against his parent club at the Emirates. With O’Brien a doubt for the Arsenal clash, the Hammers could be severely hampered at right-back for the opening day of the season, having also allowed Guy Demel to leave over the summer. Given that Alexis Sanchez is unlikely to feature for the hosts, Arsene Wenger may well choose to unleash Theo Walcott down the Arsenal left to take advantage.

Bromley Town 0 Crystal Palace 6

Patrick Bamford was the star of the show as the Eagles ran riot at Bromley Arena. The on-loan Chelsea striker grabbed a first-half hat-trick before being replaced at the break, whilst Sullay Kaikai, Dwight Gayle and Wilfried Zaha also added their names to the score sheet.

Alan Pardew mainly called upon players who had failed to earn much pitch time in the club’s recent tour of South Africa. Alex McCarthy got the nod in goal, with a back-four of Martin Kelly, Brede Hangeland, Luke Croll and Christian Scales. Zaha, Jordon Mutch, Joe Ledley and Kaikai made up the midfield, allowing Gayle and Bamford to take their places up front. The Eagles boss made seven changes over the course of the second period, though Yannick Bolasie has yet to feature in recent matches due to an ongoing hamstring problem.

Trying to see anywhere I can improve here. I have resolved to go with Costa and his dodgy hamstring over Hazard...

Ideally would like Mane or Pelle but struggling to fit one of them in anywhere.

    Myhill / Butland

    Ivanovic / Mertesacker / Cedric / Williams / Huth

    Sterling / Walcott / Chadli / Henderson / Albrighton

    Costa / Rooney / Wilson

      Albrighton > Wanyama

      Chadli > Mane

      Is what I would do.

Good point thanks, although then I have two Southampton mids?

My reasoning was Leicester have a decent start and Albrighton could be a good differential for a few weeks, also Chadli has a good run of games after GW1.

        Decisions, decisions...

    Let's talk chips.

Triple captain - No dispute here, this is best for a small DGW with 2 teams. Preferably with Kun or Haz involved.

Bench boost - Best for a large DGW, with many small teams involved. Ideal to play after a WC that prepares your bench. Five keepers and 15 defenders got double figure hauls in the doubles last season, compared to 7 mids and 6 forwards

All-out-attack - UP FOR DEBATE. If you plan an early WC, I think this is best used GW1. I can see no other time I'd have an expensive 5th mid. Maybe a 5.5m mid after a bench boost week, but they won't have much more value over a defender. GW1 looks way better imo http://i.imgur.com/4zkqqSU.png?1

Keeping AAO chip as a safety net for a week where you happen to have mass injuries/suspensions in defence, otherwise just going to use it GW38.

Otherwise, agree 100% (so that means I agree 66.666667%)

Isn't GW38 the most attacking of the year? Most goals, least CS etc.

Take one last punt, a hit if necessary to get an eighth attacker, and have some final day fun with a 2-3-5!

Yes, same for me. Not GW1 - too many players not match-fit, too many fluffed chances.

We should have decent TV by then. Pasq makes a good point about unpredictable line ups, though... I think it's a good strategy, but it forces you to WC in GW2, which is at least a couple of weeks early for me.

Fair enough. I have no problem with an early WC tbh. Many FPL winners have used it this early. It has a lot of long lasting benefits.

Are you getting impatient, a little too excited, perhaps?

If you do decide to use it, you are not allowed to post the following for the rest of the season:

I wish I had my AOA chip! or I wish I didn't use my WC so early!

      Deal?

I have carefully considered all ways of using the chip. I like this way the best.

        It's game theory, not impatience.

Are you sure about that? You can easily use your 2nd WC a week prior to a DGW and set yourself up nicely.

In fact, I think all chips would be better utilized during a DGW even the bench boost.

          1. Piggs Boson
            • 12 Years
            8 years, 9 months ago

We have to use the first WC in the first half of the season. There are no DGWs then.

And I can't see how the AOA chip would help in a double GW. Defenders perform just as well, if not better in those weeks!

Perhaps, but I'll take my chances on attackers who have much higher ceilings.

              Sounds like you are convinced.

I want to hear all arguments against just in case I'm mistaken. There is a risk using it this way, but I think I'm going for it, every GW is unpredictable anyway.

Yeah, that is a worry. I think I'll take the gamble though. Pretty confident in Arsenal and Chelsea scoring a couple, they look very strong at the moment. And United beat Spurs 3-0 last time, hopefully they perform just as well.

Tempting but I think it forces your hand with regards to an early wildcard. So you're essentially punting 2 chips on a good GW1. Could end up well, or could be terrible.

I think it's best played after the first half WC.

WC1 followed by AoA the next GW.

Triple captain when a small DGW.

WC2 in a week before big DGW, followed by BB in a big DGW.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years

        AOA after WC1?

        Won't your 5th mid be a 4.5m?

        1. Shifty
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

doesn't have to be. By then we'd have a better idea of the the value players and bargains. If played at the right time with regards to form and fixture change, could easily have a good enough team for AOA after WC1.

For example, fixture swings between GW8-14 for Palace and City could be a good time. WC1 in GW8 when City and Palace play Newcastle and WHU. GW9 Palace plays lei, City play Bournemouth.

Who knows, Bamford and Puncheon could be a bargain, Yaya could be good value.

How about my 3 man attack with top 4 cover mids?

    Shazam!!!!

    Myhill

    O’Shea/Ward??, Azpi, Cedric

    Fabregas, Sterling, Carzola, Depay

    Pelle, Rooney, Kane

    (Speroni?, some 4.5, Saylor, Targett)

Defence a bit light weight as with all my teams, but no Haz or Aguero is a bit worrying.

I'd like this team if it was for the first 4 gws only

Not too bad, not having either Costa or Hazard is a worry.

I've also had this team with Depay to Chadli then Kane to Costa. Hazard is harder to fit in would have to down grade Pelle to Sakho or Berahino. Not sure cannot decide too hard.

2 4m defenders probably not the greatest, otherwise good

England forward Theo Walcott signs new 4yr contract with Arsenal to keep him at club to 2019. Signed last night, worth £140k per week #afc

Walcott always seems to play well and is fit just before he signs a new contract - prepare for season-ending injury.

Mane. I think Sterling will play better come gw4 with easier fixtures and Kun, whilst Southampton have easier fixtures and could be replaced for Sterling after the first few weeks.

Would you downgrade Ivan or Kos to Azpi and Williams to upgrade Ritchie or Deeny to Henderson or Sakho?

Would appreciate some thoughts on this team, possibly I over-tinkered

    Pants Hennessey
    Azpi Lescott Huth Jenkinson Targett
    Silva Hazard Walcott Ayew Bentaleb
    Benteke Rooney Bojan

Downgrade Silva to Sterling and upgrade defense? Or do you guys think Silva is worth the extra 1 mil?

    1. Birds of Prey
      • 10 Years

      for 9.0 I prefer 2 playing keepers
man, Lescotts first 2 home games are tough.
      Silva> Sterling makes sense.
I did the Bojan at the start of last year, still pissed at myself.
      Good team, good luck.

Wanyama is most popular but wouldn't recommend him cos you might lose tv.

Westwood or Fletcher would be choice.

Lots of options. Francis, Mings, Richards, Huth (probably), Morgan (potentially), O'Shea, Coloccini when fit.
