Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Friday

Rickie Lambert scores twice on his debut as West Brom put four past Bristol Rovers. James Chester is deployed at right-back on his first start for the Baggies. Watford fall to a 1-0 defeat in their final summer friendly, whilst goals from Tokelo Rantie and Marc Pugh aren’t enough to stop Bournemouth from losing at home to Cardiff.

Bristol Rovers 0 West Bromwich Albion 4

Having penned a two-year deal with the Baggies just hours prior to kick-off, Rickie Lambert bagged a brace on his debut for the West Midlanders. The first was a fortuitous deflected effort, while the second was a neat finish from a James McClean cross. Craig Gardener and Victor Anichebe rounded off the scoring for the visitors.

Tony Pulis deployed his troops in a 4-4-2 set-up, with Boaz Myhill in goal, James Chester at right-back, fit-again Craig Dawson and Jonas Olsson in the heart of defence, and Chris Brunt at left-back. A midfield four comprised of Gardner, Claudio Yacob, James Morrison and McClean supplied the ammunition for strike pairing Saido Berahino and Lambert. Pulis made eight changes over the course of the second period, with the likes of Anichebe, Brown Ideye, Darren Fletcher, Stephane Sessegnon and Callum McManaman earning minutes off the bench.

Pulis talked up Lambert’s influence after the final whistle, insisting that the veteran will have a key part to play, both on and off the pitch in the season to come:

“Rickie’s played at lower level and each time he’s stepped up he’s done well. He did exceptionally well at Southampton and probably feels he deserved more games at Liverpool. But it’s not just on the pitch that he will important, but off the pitch too. He’s a great lad and in Saido we have a wonderful talent, along with other youngsters we have. We hope the way Rickie conducts himself and how he acts will be good for him and our other young players. You cannot have enough role models. He’s been brought up through the lower leagues. When you get the chance to work down there you want to get the chance to claim everything you can – that ambition and drive remains and I hope we see the full benefits of that and I hope the other players do too.”

Bournemouth 2 Cardiff City 3

With a match against Hoffenheim to follow this evening, Eddie Howe fielded a mix of fringe players and first-team options as the Cherries’ relinquished a 1-0 lead at the Vitality Stadium. Tokelo Rantie kicked off the scoring by rounding the Cardiff keeper and slotting into a vacant net, while Marc Pugh fired home a driven finish to offer hope of a comeback in the final 20 minutes.

Charlie Daniels, Andrew Surman, Simon Francis and Sylvain Distin were the other notable inclusions in the starting XI, with the latter reportedly impressing in central defence. Yann Kermorgant was forced off on 35 minutes with a heel problem, Howe confirmed post-match.

Watford 0 Sevilla 1

Quique Sanchez Flores named a strong starting XI for the Hornets’ final pre-season friendly clash against Rojiblancos. Keeper Heurelho Gomes was protected by a back four of Allan Nyom, Sebastian Prodl, Craig Cathcart and Ikechi Anya, who took up the left-back berth. Sticking with his favoured 4-2-3-1 set-up, Etienne Capoue and Valon Behrami occupied the double pivot, while Miguel Layun, Ighalo and Steven Berghuis supported lone striker Troy Deeney.

Gabriele Angella, Ben Watson, Jose Holebas, Matej Vydra and Juan Carlos Paredes were afforded run-outs in the second 45, but Almen Abdi (knee) and Jose Manuel Jurado (muscular) sat out this encounter with minor knocks.

Taking stock after the defeat, Flores conceded that due to the influx of new players over the last couple of months, he is still no closer to knowing his likely starting XI for next weekend’s opener at Everton:

“I don’t know, we have one week more and it is difficult. We are incorporating players every week which is good news but that makes it difficult because we are then having to explain to the new players what we want from them in the system, the model and the way we want to play…Today we played a deeper defensive line in the first half and it was difficult to stop their players. In the second half we played with high pressure and a different style…We are trying to create a good balance between defence and attack. I wasn’t that happy with the football in the first half because after we won the ball we then rushed and we lost possession and the chance to build the play. I understand the players need to make mistakes in order to advance. So I am not very sad.”

Just Trying Something Out. Any feedback would be amazing!

    Speroni (Butland)
    Azpil Jagielka Cedric Clyne
    Depay Walcott Hazard (Wanyama, Barry)
    Costa Rooney Gayle

Please could you rate this and give me any tips on how it can be improved and ways to potentially get aguero into the side.
    Thanks!

Everton have rubbish fixtures so would ditch Jagielka. Gayle far from nailed on at Palace so would also ditch him. Prefer 3-4-3 to 4-3-3

Have a feeling everton may do well this year may take a punt on jagielka may live to regret it. I have 13.5 mil left and need a midfielder and forward to go straight into my starting 11 any tips?
        Team is now currently:
        Speroni (Butland)
        Jags Cedric Clyne (Taylor, Baker)
        Hazard Depay Walcott ??? (Wanyama)
        Rooney Kane ???
Have looked at henderson and berahino to fill the gaps?

Nice. I hate Roonpig though. Upgrade him to Aguero and downgrade a couple in defence for funds. You have Depay, no need for false-hair-boy

My defence currently is O Shea, Huth, Mings, Cedric and Cresswell.

I absolutely love the rotations, and fixture wise some of the games look golden........however, I have this aching doubt in my mind that when it comes to games I may struggle for clean sheets.

I'm still tempted on going with an azpi/kos just for that added clean sheet security

    RMT?

    Ruddy - (Rudd)

    Merte - Shaw - Huth - (Richards) - (O'Shea)

    Hazard - Walcott - Ozil - Ritchie - (Wanyama)

    Rooney - Pelle - Lukaku

    1.0 in the bank

    ----------------------------

Happy with Ruddy/Rudd.. Prefer it to Butland even with the 1.0 in the bank.

Huth, Richards, O'Shea seem to have a very strong rotation to start the season..

Lukaku I think is great value now on pens too and can score against anybody. As with Ozil, I bit of a punt on an established player who I think will have a great season.

    Thoughts??

7/10. Just personal differences. I'd have Butland in for Rudd. Not sure about Micah Richards, there's better other 4.5s or even Targett 4 as a punt.

Like your midfield, just personal preference makes me avoid Wanyama as I don't like midfielders who are just going to consistently get 2/3 points so would go Anya but thats subtle difference.

Like the strikeforce, hard to work out what Pelle is going to do but easy to be flexible with so many other strikers, could upgrade to Benteke GW2.

    Ruddy
    Ivanovic - Koscielny - Cresswell
    Hazard - Walcott - Mane - Puncheon - Ritchie
    Rooney - Sakho

    Rudd - Deeney - Shawcross - Lescott

I will probably rotate between Ritchie and Deeney depening on fixture.
Same for if Shawcross or Lescott have better fixture than Cresswell I'll switch them around.

Pretty happy with it though tbh

If Benteke is out is Lambert a viable option?.

Nailed to start and presumably on set pieces?

Vardy. We don't know how often Lambert will start and can see Leicester being more attacking than west brom

Why is Sakho soo popular? Went through a bit of a hot streak last season but then faded, and West Ham have hardly looked great in the Europa League games.

Fixtures I think, and Payet in behind. Those teams could get Litt up.

Cheap. Started pre-season good (he doesn't play in Europa). Payet assist machine. Litterarly no competition now Valencia is injured...

For those going without Aguero to start the season yet plan to get him in almost straight away, why not cut out the middle man and get him now? Maybe he will come off the bench against West Brom but he can easily score in ten to fifteen minutes especially if City already have the match won and its over as a contest. GW 2 against Chelsea is a very important fixture for City and the aim will be to have Aguero start that match. He is fixture proof anyway so waiting until the fixtures get better in GW 4 seems a bit unnecessary. And the common move of Rooney to Aguero and then downgrade a midfielder seems a bit of a minefield cause you could easily pick the wrong midfielder, miss points and then have to get them back in with another transfer. Too much changing to start the season, just my opinion, each to his own as they say.

I agree with most of what you said, but Chelsea is not a good game for your first start, and Everton away is tricky (even for Kun IMO).

That's why many will get him in GW4.

Yeah fair enough Chelsea will be tough no doubt about that. Aguero could be a great differential to start the season if many opt to not start with him.

If Aguero's groundhog season was to play 15 minutes one week and Chelsea the next, he'd be worth about 5.5m. I'll be investing elsewhere for GWs 1 & 2, rolling over my first sub and see how the land lies at GW3 before bringing him in.

Wilson (5.5) upgrade your fifth mid, play 352. Deeney and Wilson rotate really well first 6 weeks

I see very few Tadic in RMT, but his -value- at 7.0 seems to be close to the popular Mane at 8.0m and the likes of Chadli etc.

Anyones with him in his team?

    Mignolet(4.0)
    Wisdom Ivanovic Francis(Targett,O'Shea)
    Redmond Hazard Hendo Wally(Wan)
    Rooney Lukaku(c) Giroud

1.5 itb to get Bentekke+Kun instead of Lukaku-Rooney.Ivanovic(>Cresswell)+Walcott/Giroud(>8.5mid/fwd if one of them fails to return points)

Chelsea are running a competition on FPL you just need to choose Chelsea as your club. I assume I'm ok to post this link. Reasonable prize and it doesn't even take a up a league slot.

Hey guys, thoughts and tips on my team would be great. I am still deciding between Ritchie & Sakho or Milner/Chadli & Deeney.

    Ruddy (Butland)

    Mert Aspi Huth (Francis O'shea)

    Walcott Mata Hazard Ritchie (Wanyama)

    Kane Rooney Sahko (0.0mil ITB)

    Cheers :).
