The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – West Ham

Our members articles analysing last season are completed today with a review of West Ham’s performances. The Hammers entered 2014/15 in reasonable health, having finished 13th in the Premier League in the previous campaign, although they only gained 40 points and did flirt with the relegation zone before finally confirming their top-flight status.

Plenty of changes were made in both playing and coaching personnel at Upton Park last summer, with forwards Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho brought in, while Teddy Sheringham joined up as an attacking coach. Cheikhou Kouyate and Aaron Cresswell were also signed, while Carl Jenkinson and Alex Song moved to the Hammers on season-long loans.

In this members article, we asses the main goal threats and creators in Sam Allardyce’s final year at the helm and also compare the team’s attacking numbers to the previous year.

      To me, Sinclair is the ideal replacement for Walcott/Sterling the day I want Aguero. If he looks good, then great. If he doesn't look good, then choose the 5.0 who does.

      Vardy and Wilson? I was going to suggest a punt on Sakho, and save some money for Aguero. But with those two, I think I would have looked to Rooney.

    What do do with/think of Benteke? A goal today suggest he is match fit, at least. And if he's fit, he should get some goals just being Benteke. But I don't feel comfortable starting with him. Still, greater potential than Pelle. And a great price.

          Depends. If you have costa then walcott, fabregas, sterling. If you dont then fabregas first.

        Spurs fixtures are just so juicy... and everything's coming to Kane. If I have to sacrifice a forward, I may lean to Tekkers instead purely based on fixture. Thanks though.

      Cech is expensive. Downgrade to Schmeicel or another 4.5 and upgrade Benteke who is not match sharp and might not start GW1. You'll need a platform to getting Aguero.

      Rest is good, not sure over Mata though

    Having a hard time deciding on the GK + permium defender combo. Chelsea defensive cover is a given, but not sure if I need both Arsenal and Soouthampton in defence. With both Cech and Courtois at just £5.5, it's tempting to go with one of them for defensive cover. So basically tinkering with six different GK+defense strategies:

    a) Butland/Ruddy + Azpi/Cedric/ 3x4.5
    b) Steekelenburg/4.5 + Azpi/Cedric/ 3x4.5
    c) Cech/4.0 + Azpi/Cedric/ 3x4.5
    d) Courtois/4.0 + (Kosc or Mert)/Cedric/ 3x4.5
    e) Cech/4.0 + Azpi/Cedric/ 3x4.5
    f) Steekelenburg/4.5 + Azpi/Cedric/(Kosc or Mert) / 2x4.5

    Steekelenburg could also be Panti or Fabianski. Is going with premium GK's a viable strategy, or will save points/bonus make up for clean sheets for the not-so-rock-solid mid table GK's?

    I'm staying clear of Clyne. I think Liverpool have a lot of threat upfront and I can't see Clyne getting much attacking returns. If he starts poorly, the 40%+ who have might decide to sell him = Price decrease :/
