The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – West Ham

Our members articles analysing last season are completed today with a review of West Ham’s performances. The Hammers entered 2014/15 in reasonable health, having finished 13th in the Premier League in the previous campaign, although they only gained 40 points and did flirt with the relegation zone before finally confirming their top-flight status.

Plenty of changes were made in both playing and coaching personnel at Upton Park last summer, with forwards Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho brought in, while Teddy Sheringham joined up as an attacking coach. Cheikhou Kouyate and Aaron Cresswell were also signed, while Carl Jenkinson and Alex Song moved to the Hammers on season-long loans.

In this members article, we asses the main goal threats and creators in Sam Allardyce’s final year at the helm and also compare the team’s attacking numbers to the previous year.

    seems like a good idea when it comes to getting City cover, but with the Jan wc gone you could be looking at 30+ GWs without a wc

        It does make a bit of sense in that you just totally rejig to get Kun, Sterling/Silva and maybe a defender in but it should be possible to get 3 x City without one

    Who was the first FPL player you checked the price of this year? I remember rushing to the spurs players (spurs fan) and looking for chadli. My reaction to his price was one of pleasant surprise

      It depends if you think higher priced defenders will score more points. Personally I try to pick a defence as cheap as possible based on fixtures/rotation.

        I've always gone cheap as possible but this season thinking differently.
        think mine is 26.5 at the mo, all players relatively nailed on with decent defensive records.

      For me it's Cedric.

      - 2 career goals in 91. He's a defender of course, but he won't be getting you many goals.
      - Right back. Don't the new BPS scoring favour centre backs?
      - Southampton also bought right back Cuco Martina. Will there be competition from him?
      - Card magnet apparently. 10 yellows last season I've heard? (Forgive me/correct if that's wrong)
      - Southampton have lost Schneiderlin, a key holding midfield player. Will they be as strong defensively?

      This isn't a thread to slag off Cedric. I'd like to hear your feedback on why he's a popular pick, and also reply to the original post with some other players that appear popular on these parts that in your opinion aren't.

        I can definitely see the Ritchie appeal. Bournemouth's most influential player last season. A lot of goals and assists. Seems attacking. Quite cheap.

        My only concerns are deeney and azpi.

        Ideally I would prefer Ivan but can't find the funds.
        Will deeney deliver? He was amazing in the championship.

      Why not get Aguero in GW3? Everton aren't exactly solid at the back. Remember 6-3 Chelsea. It could be the 4-1 Spurs of last season

        Going dirt-cheap at the back is a viable tactic, but at least get nailed-on starters.

        Doubts about both Muniesa and Gomez starting - and you're not going to get any help from your bench. 🙂

        Maybe look at Huth/Coates/Richards/Ward.

      Is Walcott actually a bit of a gamble?

      He's likely to play OoP, but he's hardly nailed is he? Ramsey and Ozil on the other hand, although not as exciting, will probably play every match when fit.

      £9m seems a lot for someone who won't be starting all the time.

        I was going to take a punt on Walcott for 2/3 weeks and then drop him for Ozil or Cazorla.... Figured sanchez would make his starts sporadic. Watching how ineffective he was today has made me question whether he'll start the first game over giroud.
