Scout Picks

The Scout Picks – New for 2015/16

Having experimented with a new system for the Scout Picks last season, once again, we’re tweaking the setup for the forthcoming season – hopefully for the better.

We’re still giving you, the Fantasy Football Scout community, the opportunity to get involved and take on our lineup.

We have, however, decided to scrap the weekly vote which, at times, could sometimes result in spam comment posting and the occasional exploit.

Instead, we’re turning to a lottery to select a community member to select their picks in each Gameweek.

If you wish to submit a Scout Picks squad and be the community’s champion in the forthcoming Gameweek, you’ll need to submit your details via this form.

Twenty-four hours later we’ll announce the selected champion and he/she will then have until Thursday afternoon to submit their picks.

This will then go head-to-head with our squad, which will be selected using the old traditional method of argument and discussion behind the scenes – at which point I’ll put my foot down and pick Leighton Baines regardless. So there will only be one set of Scout Picks from us this season.

We’re also planning a couple of new articles, centred around the Scout Picks.

We’ll bring you a Provisional Scout Picks selection on Tuesday detailing our early thinking. This article will also be used to announce the community champion for that week.

We’re also planning a new ad-hoc article that will reveal some of the discussion and tension going on behind the scenes, as a way of letting you get a view of our own selection process and any particular dilemmas in a given Gameweek.

Then, on Friday, you’ll get the final Scout Picks from us and your champion.

We’re still offering a prize alongside this process. The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

How Do I Get Involved?

Would-be community “Champions” must put themselves forward by submitting their details on the Scout Picks Champion Entry form.

We will create a community article on Monday each week to announce that applications are open and link to the form.

An applicant will be chosen at random the following day and announced in our Provisional Picks article.

The successful community “Champion” must supply their final Scout Picks XI to Jonty (jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk) by 3pm on Thursday of that week. They have the option to tweak their Picks until 3pm on Friday.

Community Champions may seek the help and advice of others on the site once announced.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager”, chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

What do I need to do if I become the Community Champion?

You must select an Fantasy Premier League squad of 11 players in any valid FPL formation and using the regular FPL rules – eg: only three players per team permitted.

We will set a budget for your XI. Initially, this will be 82.5 and will increase as the season progresses and prices rise.

You may consult with the community in order to gain advice on building your Scout Picks for the Gameweek.

You do not need to submit any test to accompany your Picks but we may use a contribution should you wish to submit up to 200 words.

How Will the Scout Picks Be Scored?

We will total up the FPL points for both our Scout Picks and the community’s Picks.

No captain will be applied.

No chips will be applied.

Are there any other rules?

Yes there are. Plus, we reserve the right to make up some more along the way once we get started.

For now, we’re stipulating the following:

  • Community Champion Nominations must be registered users on Fantasy Football Scout and must not be under moderation at the time.
  • Scout Picks cannot be posted as a nomination on behalf of another user.
  • Nominees must be willing to supply a valid email address for contact throughout the selection process.
  • Any nominee or Champion voted by the community, who is later put under moderation, will not be considered for that Gameweek.
  • We reserve the right to change and overrule the selection of the chosen Community Champion at anytime.

We are now accepting applications for Gameweek 1 so head over to the entry form if you fancy getting your name in the hat.

You have until 2pm on Tuesday to get your application submitted.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm starting to think that it might be best to use the AOA chip in GW1/2 as you can start with a heavy fifth midfielder, and then easily downgrade.
It could be harder later on as you will probably have Aguero who takes a big chunk of your budget.

    Thoughts?

      Totally viable option.

Why not wait till you have Aguero, Rooney, Sanchez and Hazard in your team all with favourable fixtures and fitness?

You would play those four regardless of the AOA-chip.

Why would you use all out attack then?
The rest of the team will be pretty terrible with all those heavy-hitters (if it's possible to have them all).

AOA only makes it so you can have 2 defenders, so it doesn't really matter for the good fixtures thing.

It might make more sense to keep it as a backup in case 3 defenders aren't playing one week for some reason.

Could be, but you're not guaranteed to have a good fifth midfielder then.

This has put me off this strategy. It seems that deeper into the first or second half of the season, i.e. after-WCing, I'll hasn't to bench three defenders. But, if you have someone like Sinclair as 5th mid it could work.

That sounds like a very sensible strategy. Sanchez being out of the equation also supports it.

Since this chip comes at the cost of playing defenders, it would be useful to look back and see if teams are more or less likely to concede goals in the early stages of the season. If the former then you may well be on to a winner. At the moment my team is midfield-heavy, so I would certainly consider this.

I was considering this. It would also give you a points boost at the start of the season. Then WC to get in Aguero, etc. It actually might be the best time to use it.

Could be, but you would have to plan 2 transfers then most likely, in order to fund a good fifth midfielder. Aguero will also make it harder to get a good midfield. If Costa is out then I'm looking at this attack for GW2.

        Fabregas - Mané - Walcott - Chadli/Mata - Ozil
        Rooney - Benteke/Sakho - Wilson

What front 8 would you have in mind that would be worth playing the chip with? At the moment I have Sinclair and Sakho, not sure its worth playing to bring them into the equation.

Rooney appears to pop up in a lot of teams. Why so? His record against Spurs, perhaps? Or just a lack of viable alternatives until Aguero is back? At 10.5m I think he is overpriced given his form over the past year, and I'm very much inclined to go with Lukaku in Gameweek 1 provided he is fit. Spurs *should* be much more solid defensively this season after a full year under Pochetino, and I can quite easily see them keeping Man Utd scoreless in that opening fixture.

He's playing centre forward as opposed to midfield so that means goals. Particularly when you factor in Rooney is nailed and the only proper striker. The midfield of United will be providing loads too.

He's back to being a center forward, not a defensive midfielder. Underpriced. Plus, he tends to alternate bad and great years. Also, ManU will be better this year.

Lots of reasons. I was initially planning to transfer him out for Aguero early, but I'm currently planning to go with both.

He's playing centre forward for now, but his pre-season form (for what it's worth) suggests he's not the force he once was in that position. Speculation I know, but I think LVG's reluctance to play Rooney in centre-forward was more than just him not trusting players in other positions. I don't think he fully trusted Rooney as a striker, and I don't think it will be long before Rooney is moved further away from the opposition goal.

Well actually this is why I took a break last season - took a year out as I'd just started a job as a scientist in London (University College London). So I've spent a year working really hard and using all the time I was spending on fantasy football!

Thanks. Yep same job - it's been a rollercoaster. Got a few abstracts accepted, presented the work at conferences in Vancouver and Switzerland, and did a lot of offline stuff.

I actually do have to say bloody hell, I missed out on SO MUCH of life playing FPL. I didn't realize until I stepped outside how much I'd got into it 😆

That said, I'm coming back on my terms... I'll be at a happy medium between obsession and not playing at all.

If you had been here a few days earlier - but I will see what I can do.

                  GW 1:

Wonder what price Gradel will be?

If he's 5.5, ie cheaper than Ritchie, I might seriously consider him. Very decent player on either the wing or up top, scored 17 goals in the French top league last season, where he was on pens.
