Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 1- Sunday

Goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate fire West Ham to victory at the Emirates as Theo Walcott is shifted to the bench. Liverpool get the better of Stoke at the Britannia thanks to a Philippe Coutinho long-range effort, Graziano Pelle maintains his pre-season form at St James’, as Magpies new boy Georginio Wijnaldum helps earn the hosts a point.

Walcott Benched as Gunners Falter

Theo Walcott’s omission from the starting line-up was the chief topic of discussion among Fantasy managers prior to kick-off. The Gunners winger sat third in our Captain Poll for Gameweek 1 but dropped to the bench, with Arsene Wenger favouring Olivier Giroud as the lone striker and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the right flank. Even this early into the season, Walcott owners will be having second thoughts in light of yesterday’s teamsheet, with Alexis Sanchez returning earlier than expected to push for a start away to Palace next weekend.

Despite firing off more attempts at goal (21) than any other side over the weekend, Arsenal struggled to fashion many clear-cut chances against West Ham’s well regimented defence, with Giroud’s league-high tally for shots inside the box (five) somewhat belying his lack of threat. Given that Wenger previously said he’d rotate the Frenchman and Walcott depending on the nature of the opponent’s defence, the latter could well be afforded a start against Crystal Palace next Gameweek – the Eagles’ attacking instincts under Alan Pardew could expose their backline to Walcott’s pace.

Petr Cech turned out an uncharacteristically mistake-laden performance on his debut for the Gunners and was at fault for both goals. With three favourable matches (cpl, new, STO) in the next four, though, the 5.5-priced shot-stopper is unlikely to shed too many owners. The heavily-backed Hector Bellerin will need to be monitored after he missed out with a muscle injury.

Adrian Defiance Keeps Arsenal at Bay

Cheikhou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate (both 5.5) etched their names onto the scoresheet as Slaven Bilic’s troops bounced back from their Europa League exit in impressive style. Kouyate racked up a decent haul of attacking returns last season (four goals and three assists) but faces competition from the likes of Riyad Mahrez (brace against Sunderland) in his price bracket. Zarate, meanwhile, looks set for a run in the side after Enner Valencia was ruled out for up to three months, presenting us with an alternative to the likes of Callum Wilson and Troy Deeney in the third striker slot.

Reece Oxford – at the age of 16 years and 235 days – became the youngest player to don the Irons strip during the Premier League era. Classified as a defender by the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Oxford (4.0) lined up in central midfield alongside Mark Noble and Kouyate. His out-of-position potential is sure to turn a few heads, yet Pedro Obiang – who returned to training earlier this week – could well displace the youngster when Leicester City visit the Boleyn Ground. Elsewhere at the back, Adrian earned 11 points in the FPL game, courtesy of six saves and maximum bonus.

Dimitri Payet operated in the hole behind Diafra Sakho and Zarate, delivering the cross for Kouyate’s opener. The 7.5-rated playmaker’s silky touch and surprising turn of pace could engender further attacking returns as West Ham embark on four excellent home clashes (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the next six Gameweeks, which means they are sure to attract attention at both ends of the pitch.

Coutinho Stunner Steals it for Liverpool

In an otherwise insipid affair, Philippe Coutinho’s moment of class – a trademark long-range effort – consigned Stoke City to defeat four minutes from time. The Brazilian playmaker was comfortably the Reds’ most potent threat, fashioning more shots (three) than the rest of their midfield combined. At 8.0 in FPL, Coutinho sets us back 1.0 more than both Jordan Henderson and James Milner (7.0) but could certainly emerge as the prime pick this term if he’s more ruthless with his finishing.

Left-back Joe Gomez posted an 11-point haul by virtue of an assist, clean sheet and three bonus points. Priced at 4.5, the former Charlton defender is sure to receive a significant boost on his 4.5% ownership, despite the fact he’s a rotation risk with Alberto Moreno waiting in the wings. If Gomez can nail down that starting berth, he could be employed in a budget rotation strategy that exploits Liverpool’s favourable upcoming home ties (BOU, WHU, NOR, AVL) while circumventing their tricky road fixtures (ars, mun, eve, tot).

Christian Benteke fed off scraps on his debut, managing just one attempt at goal throughout the 90. Nonetheless, his 42.6% ownership will have no qualms about retaining the Belgian’s services, given that those above-mentioned four home fixtures take place over the next six Gameweeks.

Pelle Amongst the Goals Again

Graziano Pelle opened the scoring at St James’ Park with a free header, before Shane Long nodded in an equaliser in the 79th minute. Saints’ excellent raft of upcoming matches (EVE, wat, NOR, wba) should encourage Pelle’s 16.4% ownership to back the Italian frontman during that stretch, bearing in mind he’d already notched seven times over the pre-season schedule.

Although he spurned two good chances to seal the victory in injury time, Sadio Mane’s knack for engineering goalscoring opportunities bodes well for the coming weeks. Similarly, Dusan Tadic (7.0) – one of our three Differentials this Gameweek – served up the joint-most chances of any midfielder (six) this weekend, underlining his assist potential.

Cedric Soares looks a fine replacement for the departed Nathaniel Clyne from a Fantasy perspective, with the Portuguese right-back’s rampaging runs giving rise to the cross for Pelle’s goal. Having picked up a yellow card in the first half, though, Soares was replaced by Cuco Martina in the second period to avert the risk of being sent off. Elsewhere in defence, Maya Yoshida was selected ahead of Steven Caulker alongside Jose Fonte and, at 4.5, appears to be in the driving seat for a first-team place if Ronald Koeman fails to add to his options over the remainder of the transfer window.

Jay Rodriquez (7.0) made his long-awaited return to Premier League action on the left wing of a 4-2-3-1 set-up. The English winger tallied 15 goals and three assists in the 2013/14 campaign but will clearly need time to get back up to speed – he was handed just over an hour by Koeman, though Long will be looking for a start next weekend after emerging from the bench to grab the equaliser.

Wijnaldum Opens Magpies Account

Georginio Wijnaldum (7.0) and Papiss Cisse (6.5) got off the mark as Steve McClaren kicked off his tenure with a deserved point. Wijnaldum provided a much-needed goal threat from midfield in the number ten berth, notching two shots inside the box. Cisse, meanwhile, could be a steal in the mid-priced forward bracket if he can replicate his explosive scoring of last season that saw him chalk up 11 goals in just 1,158 minutes. With six tough fixtures in the next seven, though (swa, mun, ARS, whm, CHE, mci) few will be looking at the Tyneside team until the Gameweek 9 mark.

McClaren’s decision to hand Fabricio Coloccini and Chancel Mbemba starting roles at centre-half despite a lack of pre-season minutes looks to have put paid to Steven Taylor’s chances of emerging as a valid option in the 4.0 defender bracket.

The impressive Vurnon Anita had to be substituted in the 68th minute after taking a heavy fall. McClaren revealed after the match that the Dutchman’s injury is not as bad as first feared, with a medical assessment forthcoming at the start of the week.

why won't he be allowed to play for the U20s or U19s?

Some of the best players in the world played in those tournaments. They're great opportunities to get used to international football and more importantly tournament football.

in every other proper footballing nation that would be deemed irrelevant, it would be seen as good for their development.

If this is indeed the case then this attitude is one of the reasons why England will never achieve anything, at any level, again.

"West Ham's 16-year-old midfielder Reece Oxford..."

        Crazy!

When I was 16, I was worried about where my calculator was for the next math class.

This kid's out in front of 60k+ fans worried about which Gunners fan is the one who claimed to have slept with his Mum!

@Jake I love the sound of my own voice & no doubt I can be a know-it-all at times however, I try not to type sh%t, just to type shi%t.

Here's a quote from the article we're posting in now:

"Oxford (4.0) lined up in central midfield alongside Mark Noble and Kouyate.
His out-of-position potential is sure to turn a few heads, yet Pedro Obiang – who returned to training earlier this week – could well displace the youngster"

So, again it's very doubtful if either kid still has their place in the cpl weeks.

fair point, however i have made my bed with a 4.0m def and with no other pressing transfers (touch wood) Oxford seems like a better pick for the near future

              That's just it though!

Save the FT & use it to fix the problem instead of sliding sideways just to delay the problem you've already have.

Plenty of mid-priced options have started to reveal themselves atm.

So, there's someone you can downgrade to find the funds to fix up your 4m defender.

Going on from above - Reason to save the wildcard?

Around GW11/12/13, Chelsea, United and Everton have these run of fixtures:

    Chelsea GW13 - Norwich (h), Spurs (a), Bournemouth (h), Leicester (a), Sunderland (h), Watford (h)

    United GW12 - WBA (h), Watford (a), Leicester (a), West Ham (h), Bournemouth (a), Norwich (h)

    Everton GW11 - Sunderland (h), West Ham (a), Villa (h), Bournemouth (a), Palace (h), Norwich (a), Leicester (h), Newcastle (a), Stoke (h)

Not bad at all. I'm all for using it early and probably still will, especially as it's difficult to get Aguero and Sanchez without using too many transfers but maybe there's reason to save it to load up on the above players.

Although if Everton are anything like last year (and this weekend doesn't inspire me with confidence), maybe we can avoid anyway.

I think I'll use it between GWs 8 and 9 (if I manage to hold on to it that long). Can always get a couple of Che in then, and get in Eve and Mun players over the next few weeks using FTs.

      Reasons to wildcard now:

-Good fixtures to WHM, SWA, LIV,SOT

-Sanchez pretty much back to full fitness.

      -Walcott not nailed

-Attacking defenders (i.e. Darmian, Cedric, Gomez etc)

      -Keeper issue

-Aguero/Silva/Sterling form (pending the match tonight)

Just playing Devil's Advocate here 🙂

Devil's advocate is perfectly fine - I would agree with most of that. I think there's too many price rises likely to happen for me to avoid it, but will assess more after next GW I think.

I reckon you are at most 25 points behind the likely winner at the moment, I reckon that isn't much to make up.
though perhaps in saying you are 25 points behind the likely winner means you aren't the winner so you are right.

Normally I'd say yes, but Chelsea to me looked sluggish at times against Swansea defensive wise. Could be a more open affair this year.

Ps what do you make of the performance yesterday? First time I've felt optimistic about us gor about 3 years!

Was busy so didn't actually manage to catch the game myself but from all reports from mates at the match, it was certainly encouraging particularly Wijnaldum and Mbemba.

I still think we would have been better off letting Colo go and bringing in a replacement, I know he wasn't fully fit but it seems he was well off the pace by the last half hour. To have a good season, he needs to get back to where he was 2-3 years ago and I'm not sure he's got it in him (hope he does though!)

I agree, I think Mcclaren thinks he can do it and I'm inclined to trust his judgement on this.

In the short term Oxford might keep his place but longer term I'm not convinced he's worth having simply given his age - will need to be managed properly.

Gomez will at least keep this place the next game week. Why start him in the tougher away fixture to only then bench at home, doesn't make any sense.

At most one of the Sunderland CBs might get dropped, Kaboul out for O'Shea would be my guess.

Mahrez will continue to get points but relative to his price for the most part, don't be expecting 15 every week.

Walcott starting - I'm not convinced he will, think Sanchez goes straight in and that will jeopardise Walcott's chances.

But as JTD says - we don't have definitive answers and the best educated guess is for Gomez and Oxford.

Montero has developed into a very very good player. He'll provide lots of assists.

Shelvey has progressed well, and was creating great chances from CM. I think he'll have a great season.

And Siggy is Siggy, he'll create chances.

With these 3 players feeding them, Gomis and Ayew should score a fair few this season. I like Ayew, think I'm getting him myself.

I genuinely believe we're a good bet to go down. If Stones leaves, our back 5 looks to be:
Howard (36, been past it for a while)
        Coleman Jagielka Tyias Browning Galloway

Mourinho would struggle with that, we've got Roberto bloody Martinez! He'd concede 2 a game with Buffon, Cafu, Baresi, Stam and Maldini all at their best in the side.

We need, minimum, 2 defenders and a keeper. If Stones goes, we need a 2 top quality centre backs, a left back, and a keeper. On top of that, we need Martinez to arrange a good defensive structure. He's still playing Gareth Barry!

    Myhill

    Darmian | Oxford | Cedric

    Hazard | Sanchez | Chadli | Payet

    Aguero | Sakho | Defoe

    (Butland | Mahrez | Muniesa | Francis)

    A) The team is fine, leave it
    B) Payet to Ayew and use the 0.5m somewhere
    C) Find 0.5m somewhere and Sakho to Gomis

If C where can I find the 0.5m? Yes this is a WC team; too late to go back

I'm not panicking, but just thought I'd ask if anyone knows why O'shea didn't play? I thought he'd be a sure starter?
I might get rid of him next week in a double transfer if he doesn't start in GW2, but does anyone know if he is expected to join the starting lineup soon?

Anyone considering a double up of Sahko and Payet?

    Juicy home fixtures!

I've looked at Walcott + Wilson to Payet + Sakho but not sure I want to be spending 4 points this early on

Ohhhhh they are my 2 problems at the moment but thinking I might just leave Walcott for another week, Wilson on the other hand Zarate, Deeney or Defoe......

What if you already had Sakho?
Would you use your FT on Walcott-->Payet or stick with Walcott for another week?

Well I'm considering making that move myself so I'd definitely consider it. Unless Arsenal announce an injury then Walcott is going to be a nightmare to own.

Cheers, would rather have Payet + Gomis but not sure about wasting a transfer on Gomis. Ayew also a good shout for 7.0 but Payet was just incredible.

Could be great. I like WHM, TOT and SWA fixtures. Would love one of Sakho/Paye, Ayew/Gomis and Kane/Chadli. ATM I have none

When they post it you'll be the first to know!
But, judging by the rest of Stoke's midfield he can't be more than 6m.

And, are we really going to hop on him straight away?
Surely there are enough midfield options we can take a wait & see approach w/ the man.

Phil Jones is expected to be out with 3 months. He has mild thrombosis and the blood clotting has forced him to be sidelined for the opening of the campaign. Consequently, the centre-back is expected to miss the two Champions League play-off ties with Club Brugge.

-United website. Old news maybe but first I've heard about it (although I never saw an RMT with PJ in it, so it maybe purely academical)
