The Digest – Gameweek 1

Our final look back at a hugely underwhelming Gameweek 1 brings Leicester’s two-goal midfielder, West Ham’s perfect combination of form and fixtures and Arsenal’s dire opening display onto the lunchtime menu.

The Player

With just four goals to his name in 2014/15, Riyad Mahrez wasn’t a player that immediately leapt into Fantasy managers’ pre-season plans. Despite a kind price of 5.5 and a couple of goals over the summer, the arrival of Claudio Ranieri proved enough of a deterrent, with the Italian’s tendency to tinker persuading many to ignore Leicester’s attackers for fear of rest and rotation.

Two goals and a maximum bonus haul against Sunderland has changed all that. Granted, Ranieri was true to form, unexpectedly changing his tactics from 3-4-1-2 to 4-4-2 and shifting Mahrez from the role in “the hole” onto the right flank, yet the Algerian thrived against a beleaguered Black Cats and took full advantage of Patrick van Aanholt’s defensive frailties down the visitors’ left.

Ranieri’s decision to shift Leonardo Ulloa to the bench has seen Mahrez climb up the penalty pecking order, as evidenced by his converted spot-kick on Saturday afternoon. Despite the fact that team-mate Marc Albrighton equalled his 15-point return, the Algerian’s goal threat (he fired six attempts to Albrighton’s two) makes him the most sought-after midfielder this week.

Crucially, his budget price tag allows us to free up considerable cash to target the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguero after both emerged from the bench in the first round of fixtures. With clashes against West Ham, Bournemouth and Villa in the next four, though, Mahrez has the fixtures and form to prove more than just an enabler for our 15-man squads.

The Team

Having seen his new side tumble out of Europe prior to the start of the season, Slaven Bilic was already up against it as West Ham made their way to the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

A 2-0 win against the Gunners answered any doubters as the Hammers turned in a performance at both ends of the pitch that is bound to see interest in their main assets pick up. One look at the fixtures shows why – up next are four superb home encounters in the next six (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR), which more than atone for tricky trips to Liverpool and City over the same period.

With Dimitri Payet pulling the strings behind Diafra Sakho and Mauro Zarate, Bilic’s side look perfectly placed to kick on from their weekend win. Payet is already up and running with an assist for Cheikhou Kouyate’s opener against the Gunners and, at 7.5, could prove a steal if he continues in the same vein.

At the back, meanwhile, the Hammers will be buoyed by the weekend scoreline, bearing in mind they managed just two clean sheets away from home in 2014/15. The only real downside from a Fantasy perspective is that there is still some uncertainty over Bilic’s back-four. With Carl Jenkinson now available this weekend, it remains to be seen whether he will come straight into the XI, and, if so, who Bilic will select as his two first-choice centre-halves.

Young Reece Oxford also deserves a mention. One of only two 4.0-priced defenders to start Gameweek 1, the 16-year-old benefitted from the absence of Pedro Obiang to start in central midfield at the Emirates. Again, though, there are question marks over whether Bilic will retain him in his starting line-up once the Hammers have a fully-fit squad, though his 43,000+ new FPL owners are clearly undeterred.

The Talking Point

Heading into Gameweek 1, the Arsenal midfield posed one of the biggest dilemmas for Fantasy managers.

Devoid of Alexis Sanchez over the summer, Arsene Wenger’s side still looked in fine form and finished their pre-season with a convincing Community Shield win over Chelsea which left Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott and even Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all tussling for our attentions.

Fast forward a week and there’s a very different slant on things. Wenger’s decision to drop Walcott to the bench and select Olivier Giroud up top is surely a sign of what’s to come, with the Gunners boss adopting a “horses for courses” approach for the lone striker role which may well kill off both as Fantasy assets.

Whilst Ozil, Cazorla and Ramsey looked lethargic and failed to convince against the Hammers, Sanchez’ explosive cameo off the bench highlighted just why he’s the most expensive Fantasy option at the Emirates. In just 29 minutes, the Chilean produced 11 touches in the box and three attempts inside the penalty area as Arsenal desperately tried to claw their way back into the match. Away to Palace next weekend, he’ll surely start as Wenger’s side look to bounce back from their opening day disaster.

Yes, he may set you back 11.0 in FPL but you get what you pay for with the Chilean. On the evidence of Sunday’s showing, it won’t be long before his 6% ownership is on the up.

anyone been able to fit in Aguero, Hazard, Silva and Sanchez into a team that looks reasonable? thinking Wildcard next week or two?

Perhaps not this early in the season, maybe later if you manage to merchant enough; sell players that are falling and buying players that are rising. I managed to put in Hazard, Aguero, Costa and Sánchez last season but It took some time.

There's no way that a £100m team value could keep any balance with all those heavy hitters. I've got Aguero and Hazard for now.

This is what i made you can switch Haz to Silva

      Butland - Ruddy
      Azpi - Gomez - Muniesa - Huth - Oxford
      Payet - Sanchez - Haz - Sinclair - Cabaye
      Pelle - Kun - Ighalo

Yes but with Fab instead of Haz.

      I'm thinking WC before GW3:

      Fab-Schmei

      Kosc-Richards-Jenks-Mings-Williams

      Fab-Sanchez-Silva-Sinclair-Albrighton

      Kun-Wilson-Gomis

      What ya reckon?

Probably already been considered by Rooney (C)ers here but just in case:

In 27 matches against Aston Villa, Rooney has scored 15 goals (favourite team to score against) and chipped in with 6 assists (3rd fave team to assist against). Only one of these goals has come from the penalty spot.

Obviously a fair proportion of these goals were scored in the heyday of Richard Dunne though, and we're yet to see how a more athletic CB in Richards can deal with him.

    The case for Benteke:
Although Benteke has only scored 6 goals vs promoted sides in his last 3 seasons (with 3 coming in a single game), his 180 minute per goal ratio against these clubs is likely to improve in amongst better players. 5 of his 6 goals have come at home. To quantify how much more likely he is to score, I've just calculated how much better Liverpool are over Villa based on points won in the last five years, and if team quality is anything to go by, he should improve his home rate (5 in 7) to a superior 7.5 in his next 7 vs promoted sides.

Obviously just a rough calc, and haven't bothered to delve into shot stats because it's not that important, but statistically I would expect Benteke to open his account this weekend, preceded by Rooney opening his at Villa Park. Is it worth transferring out one for the other at this stage? Probably not.

P.S - Saying that, I'm not an overly excited Rooney (C)er this week and not particularly a fan of Van Gaal's restrictive style for his 'big haul' prospects.

I still think Benteke isn't fit yet. He barely had a pre-season, so I'm going to leave it a couple of weeks before contemplating getting him.

Rooney or Sakho are my captain weapons of choice this week.

Bear with me.,, this kinda makes sense

Assume that there was a Championship FPL game last season:
So is it safe to assume that if the Championship had an fpl game that Ritchie and Wilson would be one of the Hazards/Sanchez/Costa/Aguero types in that game considering their 30 goal involvement each?
So is it safe to assume you'd prob captain them and want them if you played this hypothetical championship fpl game?
Well their run from GW to GW 8 includes
LEI SUN nor and WAT ...
Does not get more championship in the EPL than that run and 😉 ..
People getting rid may well regret it soon enough.
They may flop over the season for all i know.. but i do see a very high chance that they'll average a heavy hitters 6 ppg over that run 🙂

I've spent a lot of time watching the championship over the years and last season i made a lot of money betting on these 2 in away games. They are just insane on the counter.. expecting em to do ok over the next 2 and then the run begins 🙂

I rewatched that game and BOU controlled most of the game. It reflects on the stats as well, as they had more touches in the final third, more crosses and more attempts on goal. They were unlucky not to come away with at least a tie there. Unfortunately, that is just how it is sometimes in football, one set piece could change the outcome of the game.

I thought it was interesting that the announcer pointed out that 19 out of 22 goals Rudy scored last year were via headers. Massive aerial threat.

I'm holding onto Ritchie, he was way up there in terms of touches in the final third when compared to the rest of the mids. Wicked left foot on that guy.

I fancy Payet over the others, problem is that will free up 1.5m, that enables Ozil-> Silva in GW3 but then leaves me needing to take a 4 point hit in GW4 to enable Rooney --> Kun.

Not sure what to do tbh :s

Yes, but it's Kun against Watford at home. Probably worth an 8 point hit especially if you activate the triple captain chip

The player I would have to chop from midfield would be Mane (H) to Nor or Hazzard (H) CP. Not wanting to take out either tbh :s

    Doolittle,
The statement is we won't sell him if you make an undervalued bid of 25M

A lot can change in a year and we have the financial capacity to take that risk.

    1. Doolittle
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

Seems a stupid statement if you're likely to lose him for free. £25m is a very fair bid, I'd say overgenerous, for a player who can just run down his contract for a year.

Our statement with them was we'll give you De Gea for a reasonable fee if you give Ramos for a reasonable fee. And we have sold Beckham, RVN etc for very reasonable prices to them.

Young keeper, most promising in the world and you bit 25M? Not having it.

Yes but we're demanding 30-35. And De Gea available this season could be well worth it.

Yeah, but 30-35 mill for a goalie on the final year of his contract is a tad ludicrous.

It would not be and you're demanding way too much. DDG comes from a spectacular season that he is unlikely to repeat, and has some major flaws in his overall game that he probably won't fix well enough to become one of the best GK's around. And he only has one year left in his contract. He simply is not worth that £25M even if you'd play him, and in any case, you're not playing him, so you make no value of him now.

      2. Somalion
        • 14 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

The club have 0 concerns about finances I suppose so can allow the contract to run down.

I'd sell him and bid for Lloris right now to get the whole affair over with. If he wants to go, I understand. Shame, because the Real fans were scum last season, but there's no question as to the allure of the club and the benefits it offers him.

Manu fans think they're entitled. Look at the reactions to Di Maria. Many wanted to keep him on the bench to rot just because he didn't settle into LVG's pheelosophee.

FFS loves Walcott. They all said he'd start the first game too, despite the majority of evidence pointing against it.

I didn't think there was too much evidence pointing against Walcott not starting versus West Ham. He had played striker in the FA Cup final which was Arsenal biggest game of the season over Giroud and started against Chelsea upfront in the Charity Shield. I knew the big risk when I got Walcott though.

I could be in the same situation. The plan is to get Mahrez for Theo either this week or next week to afford Aguero. I'm undecided whether to hold Theo or not though.

    11. PAYET FORWARD
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

Even if he starts the next game though, that's no guarantee for the rest of the season. Whilst he's value when he plays oop, he's a rotation risk already and will be even more so if and when Arsenal get in another striker. This would push him to the bench or back into midfield where there are better, cheaper alternatives.
