Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 3

Our regular Monday look around the treatment rooms arrives this afternoon as we scour the top-flight for confirmation of any new injuries sustained over the weekend. Southampton have worries over their Senegalese attacker, Everton’s issues at left-back increase, whilst Spurs are sweating over the availability of their Danish playmaker.

Crystal Palace
Following the death of his father, Yannick Bolasie was afforded compassionate leave for the Eagles’ victory over Aston Villa. Commenting on the tragic news, Alan Pardew will allow the DR Congo international time to grieve:

“Ironically he (Sako) wasn’t going to start. Yala was in a great place and then, bless his heart, he has this terrible news about his father. That win was for him and his family and I hope it gives them a lift. I’m not putting him under any pressure to come back. It’s about him and his family and when he feels comfortable. I couldn’t care less if it takes three weeks.”

Pardew – who is without Patrick Bamford’s services against parent club Chelsea this weekend – reckons Connor Wickham is also likely to miss out at the Bridge:

“He got kneed in the ribs against on Arsenal. He tried to train on Wednesday but couldn’t take the pain so we think he will probably miss Chelsea as well and then he will be okay.”

Everton
Brendan Galloway was substituted in the dying embers of the first half against Manchester City after picking up a knee injury. Roberto Martinez later revealed that the 19-year-old suffered a knock to his patella tendon, with an assessment forthcoming over the next few days. In better news, the Spanish boss confirmed that Bryan Oviedo should be able to cover for Galloway as he approaches a return to first-team action:

“Brendan has been terrific and we as a football club are ready to give young players an opportunity. He picked up a patella tendon problem that we’ll assess in the next 24 to 48 hours. It’s probably more to do with his age and the fact he’s still growing rather than a structural injury. Bryan Oviedo is fully fit and needs a bit of match fitness now. Hopefully we’ll see him on the pitch very soon.”

Manchester City
Nicolas Otamendi was not part of the Sky Blues’ squad for their 2-0 win over Everton due to his lack of a work permit. The Home Office are expected to clear the former Valencia defender by the middle of next week, freeing him up for a home tie against Watford.

Southampton
Sadio Mane had to be replaced by Shane Long after just 25 minutes of the Saints’ home encounter against Watford. Ronald Koeman was keen to play down the severity of the injury, expressing hope that the fleet-footed winger will be passed fit for their midweek Europea League tie:

“He had a kick on his hip. It looks not so bad, but we’ll have to wait. He was not good enough to continue. I hope that we will have everybody available for Thursday, Sadio as well.”

Sunderland
Earlier this afternoon, Dick Advocaat confirmed that Billy Jones won’t be available for tomorrow evening’s cup clash against Exeter due to injury.

Tottenham
Christian Eriksen sat out Spurs’ 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium due to a knee injury, as confirmed by the club’s official website.

Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino said that new arrival Clinton Njie could make his debut in the Gameweek 4 clash against Everton, having secured his work permit and negotiated a week of training:

“He was in France for his work permit and maybe next week he will be available. First, he needs to train more with the group.”

West Bromwich Albion
Saido Berahino was absent from the Baggies’ matchday squad for their 3-2 home defeat against Chelsea, fuelling speculation that he’s poised for a much-mooted transfer to Tottenham. Pressed on the situation, Tony Pulis rejected the opportunity to explain Berahino’s no-show:

“It’s absolutely ridiculous we are talking about something outside of football. I have said what I have said about the transfer window; if you close it before the season starts then everybody can concentrate on the football. There are a lot of clubs being affected by it being open and we are playing Chelsea today – the champions – and we are not talking football, which is down to the system.”

Suspensions

John Terry received a second yellow card for pulling at West Brom striker Salomon Rondon as he raced clear of the Blues’ rearguard, meaning the Chelsea captain will miss a home clash against Palace next Gameweek. Offering his verdict after the match, Jose Mourinho declined to bemoan the decision and instead highlighted the work they’ve done in training to cope with a one-man disadvantage:

“I prefer to focus on us. To speak about the sending off I have to speak about many other things in the game – some you can see, others we can see, so many things. I have to do what is in my hands which is to train. We have to train 10 against 11. We have done it a couple of times already in Canada. We have to do it more because we have to know what to do with 10 men when you are winning, or losing, or chasing a result. The difference between today and Swansea was exactly that. Against Swansea we had 10 and we wanted to change the result, and today we had 10 and we wanted to keep the result. We must have clear ideas about it so it’s something we have to do in training, and that is the only thing in our hands.”

Carl Jenkinson was sent off for fouling Bournemouth midfielder Max Gradel as he burst into the penalty box. The Arsenal loanee now sits out the Hammers’ trip to Anfield next weekend, with James Tomkins expected to cover at the right-back berth.

I have heard it's smart to always do as many changes as possible in your team every GW. No hits if it can be avoided though. I think this statement is true because there are always ways to make your team better, especially in the beginning. If you think one player will outscore one in your team next round or over a short period of time and the one in your team does´t rise or is in good form do it. Also trying to improve TV is smart in the beginning. I think these advices are a good finger rule if you haven't prepared changes. When you have a high TV later in the season your team will improve massively. In some cases it's smart to keep a FT. Just my opinion though.

Many of the top players take hits early on, to stay current and increase TV.

I've done that in the past, especially the team value game. Hasn't gone well for me.

The problem with the TV game is that it relies on all the premium players to fire on all cylinders simultaneously, which rarely happens. Almost always, there will be one or two budget gems who keep pace for long enough to make team value largely irrelevant. e.g Kane last year

If you follow the points and get the form players in, your team value will naturally rise anyway so you don't really need to take any special measures.

My FPL history isn't the greatest, but surely Kane is not an example of anything other than a complete one-off?

There'll always be bargains, but a Harry Kane isn't an annual event..

Harry Kane was exceptional, but every year there is a cheap standout player. Last year was particularly good/bad for this.

well exactly, last year had quite a couple of these cheap stand out players, which isn't actually that great for the game as a whole since everyone generally ends up with the same squad.

Kane was unique for the length of time he was on form, and his especially low price. But Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez, Michu, Jamie Vardy, Jason Puncheon, Seamus Coleman etc etc have all had periods of form long enough to rival premium alternatives.

My first season was casual until Jan/Feb and I may have missed it 🙂

It was the season of the Vorm at 4.0m bossing the clean sheets under Rodgers, if I recall correctly.

If I'm reading Wiki correctly, it sounds like that was 2010/11

"Although Assou-Ekotto had already returned from injury, Bale continued his good form and cemented his place in the starting eleven, moving forward to left wing to accommodate Assou-Ekotto at left-back."

I started the following year. Da-yum that must have been something else!

Didn't say budget options weren't good. Actually the opposite. Budget options are those who rise the fastest. Had Kane last season after his first goal when there was a chance he was nailed. Didn't count on him to compete with aguero, just to have a budget option to get some money ITB. Turned out to be a much better change than i thought

I've been on this site for 4 seasons now. Every season, after a while you get a poll of TV and rank and they are rarely correlated. In fact, those with the highest TV (usually me!) have the lowest ranks, partly because they've used hits to get the risers, and partly because they've chosen the fastest risers over the more prudent point scorers.

Often the reason for a high TV correlating with a high rank is that person just happened to pick the players who were going to score correctly. Obviously this led to price rises for those players and so gave him a high team value as well. This wasn't because he took hits to achieve this necessarily, but because he picked correctly to start with, and the team value increase was just a side effect of choosing players who did well.

Tl;dr: Correlation does not equal causation.

If one takes an either/or approach to money and rank, you may tend to see some gaps between TV and rank. However, as you alluded to above, if one's strategy is to get maximum points, and actually gets consistently high gw scores, then money often follows...

Early on, I tend to make more transfers to earn TV, but as there are only so many transfers/hits one will make before compromising (or annihilating) their rank, it is prudent to go after a few value trains (e.g. Mahrez this year), and then make sure that you have the right studs who are in-form (e.g. Kun now). The latter will tend to produce points and money (e.g. buying Kun and selling Hazard early this season; buying Costa and Sanchez early last season).

So did Sunderland, you have to give the manager a chance to adjust. Half a season of poor defence = avoid, but 3 games in it can change.

Don't know if I'm just extremely lucky, but I've never had a -4 or -8 backfire so badly that it's wrecked my GW. And I've taken a fair few in my time.

The rule of thumb advice to "not take a hit" is obviously not without reason. But a well considered hit here and there can pay off massively.

Yeah, I aimed for no hits this season too.

Then took a -4 to bring Kolarov in.

        Which somehow paid off.

Which... just makes me want to take more hits.

I think you may be right. So long as there are conditions. I only made one or two last year and finished in the top 10K but I think to be at the very very top there are special cases when you should pull the trigger

      1. RyanC
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, you're probably right. I finished just outside the top 10k last season. Maybe one or two hits less would've got me into the top 10k. But they seemed to work well at the time, so it's hard to say.

Like you say: as long as they're properly thought out, they can pay off. Just don't be reckless with them. Seems to be a good rule of thumb.

Well they may have been the reason you were so close. You would know better than me!

It my head I had made them contraband so I declined to take a -4 for Sanchez even tho everything else was saying 'do it do it'. I would have captained him at home to Burnley and that would (from memory) have been a cool 32 pts. Following week he got a brace too but I was too stubborn by then.

          Lesson learned I think

Anyone agree that is isn't Rooney that is playing that badly, but It's Van Gaal's whole system as a whole that is to blame?

I know the side isn't as impressive attacking wise as it has been in the past, but the Foxes have scored 7 Goals in 3 games compared to United's 2. Regardless of players such as Mahrez's form, their attacking line doesn't compare to United's (Mata, Depay, Rooney, Young, Januzai), especially with midfield behind supporting them.

This isn't a don't drop Rooney yet post, because most people have (including myself). I just think the criticism he's received would be better aimed at Van Gaal. I don't think any of Man U's attacking assets will be viable until Van Gaal changes his system.

Agreed, it is the system. Rooney's touch was very poor vs Villa but that doesn't mean he is responsible for United's poor attacking play in the other 2 matches.
LVG is using 2 DMs vs 2 relegation fodder sides from last season, we aren't going to start attacking any time soon

Yes I agree completely, he has no support up top, the wide players (Mata & Depay) both cut inside on their stronger foots, there isnt any crosses or pace down the flanks - Depay can accelerate but he is so wasteful in possession that he breaks down and destroys every MNU attack by constantly losing the ball

I think Costa is a great choice. Focal man in attack and Pedro, Hazard and Willian are assist merchants. An injury may pop up but I think he's worth a punt. I can't afford Kun, So I've got rid of Ivanovic + Rooney for Kompany and Costa.

Someone on here linked a twitter "agent" named Alexis_Dun85 who was supposedly a reputable source for info, and confirmed again and again that Benzema was a done deal to Arsenal, to be announced today, 100% happening. (A large group of fans started to support him and defend him against people calling him a fake).

Ever since Benzema was pictured in training today he has turned his account to private so nobody can read his tweets or what an utter arse he made of himself 😀

This has of course resulted in a number of folks researching whether he's even a football agent, which he isn't btw. Good for a laugh 😛

    Afternoon guys

slowly losing faith in Rooney, I know he got the ball in the back of the net for it to be ruled offside but the only real goal threat seems to be coming from our Midfield.

That being said Rooney is out of my team this week but if you were in my shoes who would you replace him with?

    a) Gomis
    b) Benteke
    c) Lukaku
    d) Kane
    e) Wilson

Which other strikers do you have? if you have one which is 9mil + like Sergio, then I say go Wilson to save funds

a if you already have aguero
e if you don't have aguero, giving you the chance to get aguero as one of your other strikers

I think I need more city for the weekend

I have enough money to do Payet to Yaya

But If i want to go to Silva, then I also need to get rid of Pelle, maybe Gomis or Diouf, is it worth taking a hit?

I would definitely risk it on Yaya rather than making a hit. It's a 50/50 who will score more between him and Silva. Silva is probably more likely to get a couple of assists, but if Yaya get's a couple of goals you're laughing.

Which team would you prefer. Can't make my mind up

    Guzan - Butland
    Kompany darmian Lovren
    Sanchez pedro mahrez yaya
    Aguero benteke Wilson

    Or

    Yaya>silva
    Benteke to diouf/gomis

The yaya and silva debate is driving me crazy

Mane owners.....What is the plan......keeping or getting crud this week?

I want to do either mane to yaya or ozil to yaya....

By the time I know if mane is fit yayas price will have risen again...

Do I just sit tight and wait to see if mane plays Thursday before deciding?
