Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 4

Following a Gameweek littered with knocks and niggles, we roll out our usual post-match club-by-club report on the fresh arrivals in the treatment room.

We find Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe with plenty to concern him, whilst Claudio Ranieri plays down the back problem that forced Riyad Mahrez off against the Cherries.

Arsenal
Mesut Ozil missed the Gunners 1-0 win at Newcastle with a minor knee problem. Prior to the match, Arsene Wenger confirmed he expects the German back imminently:

“It’s a slight injury but he is not available to play. He will be out for one week”

Aston Villa
Jack Grealish missed Villa’s home draw with Sunderland after injuring an ankle in training on Friday, while club skipper Gabby Agbonlahor was also ruled out through illness after the club had been hit by a widespread virus.

Post-match, Tim Sherwood brought us this on the Grealish injury….

“Jack twisted his ankle. There was no-one near him. He caught his toe in the turf on Friday. He went over on it. He was sick, gutted. We don’t know how bad it is. We’re hoping it’s just a sprain and the international break might give him an opportunity to be ready for the Leicester game.”

While he also updated us on Agbonlahor’s situation…

“Gabby is not well. He’s had the stomach bug. I think there’s six or seven at the club who have suffered. Gabby was one.”

Adama Traore was also ruled out against the Black Cats having made his debut from the bench at Palace in Gameweek 3. Sherwood was optimistic on his return after the international break…

“Adama is feeling a kick. He got a kick on the back of the calf and obviously rolled his ankle at the same time. The good news is that the ankle is okay. It’s just about the soreness of the kick – and it was too sore for him to take part.”

Bournemouth
The Cherries’ treatment room got a little bit busier this weekend after three of their players sustained weekend injuries. Tyrone Mings lasted just 11 minutes as a sub before being stretchered off, whilst Max Gradel is also a worry for Eddie Howe:

“We need to assess and scan before making a judgement. Tyrone didn’t look good, seeing him in that much pain, it’s not nice to see. Max knew early it was serious. Knee injuries are not good to see. It restricted us tactically. We couldn’t make changes when we needed to to get momentum back.”

Left-back Charlie Daniels was forced off with a knee problem at the break, though is optimistic the problem isn’t serious:

“I had an initial scan and it did not look too bad. Hopefully, it will be nothing long-term but we can’t really tell yet, that was just the first look. Once the swelling has gone down, I will probably have another scan on Tuesday to see how it is.”

The Cherries were also without Joshua King due to a hamstring problem.

Everton
The Toffees are set to be without Tom Cleverley for a period of time after the midfielder was stretchered off in yesterday evening’s goalless draw at Spurs. Post-match, Roberto Martinez admitted the club are uncertain how long Cleverley will be sidelined for:

“The physio is a little bit more positive [than he was at half-time]. I think it is clearly ligament damage – but, straight away, we were fearing it could have been ligament damage and a fracture as well. It shows that Tom is a very, very fit man to be able to get through that collision with a [relatively] minor injury. He will still be out for a while but not as long as we first thought he might be – and we thank the luck that we had there.”

Leicester
Claudio Ranieri confirmed that the Foxes in-form Riyad Mahrez was subbed off at the break after sustaining a back problem during yesterday’s clash with Bournemouth. The Leicester boss eased concerns over a serious injury by revealing:

“We changed Riyad at half-time because he took a kick very early in the game and after that, in the battle, he could not play at full speed. I wanted us to keep pressing forward, so we replaced him as a precaution.”

Southampton
Victor Wanyama – who missed the Saints Europa League exit on Thursday evening with a stomach bug – was again absent for today’s win over Norwich. With rumours of a move to Spurs growing, Ronald Koeman revealed the Kenyan was “not mentally and physically good enough to play” against the Canaries.

Stoke
Mark Hughes has confirmed that Glen Johnson was forced off just after the hour mark against West Brom due to a groin problem.

Swansea
Jefferson Montero missed today’s win over United with a minor thigh problem. After the match, Garry Monk eased fears over the extent of the injury:

“Unfortunately Jeff pulled up in training with a bit of soreness in his quad, but he has had scan and it is nothing clinical.”

Tottenham
Spurs are set to assess Moussa Dembele after the Belgian was stretchered off during the goalless draw with Everton with a foot injury.

The player himself has since posted on Twitter offering reassurance on the scale of the problem.

West Brom
James Chester missed the Baggies 1-0 win at rivals Stoke due to a minor hamstring problem. Callum McManaman also suffered from a similar complaint but was fit enough to make an appearance as a second-half sub.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

As a Utd fan, it would be very depressing to see him at Chelsea... Marginally better than City, I suppose.

Myhill and McCarty has started off okay - 5 PPG. But only a sample size of 2 games 🙂

This is the thing... we pick rotating keepers to play them for their easy games, and it seems you better to have Krul between the sticks at Old Trafford or Gomes at St. Mary's apparently.

I got an important price raise from Yaya last night, increased my selling price with 0,1.

Ayew will rise tonight, and I feel this could ve great timing.

Swansea fixtures seems good for attacking point forward. Maybe not Wat (A) but the rest.

Pretty certain I will. I'm a big fan of not overpaying at all, especially early on. Although I take the point about anything could happen in the next two weeks.

In fact, I'm tempted to do it now, because I'm not sure I'm going to learn much more between now and this evening.

The only thing putting me off is if my ML opponents spot the shift in my bank balance, but none of them are that active, nor could probably read into what I'd done anyway.

If it's 8 days protection (which is assumed by many) then he's had 90k NTI - which if you take off an estimate for wildcards puts him about on the threshold for a rise, so its close. If it's more than 8 days then he still has a way to go.

Didn't watch the whole match as I was watching the Liverpool match simultaneously.
But Pedro was way better than Hazard on his right flank.

Just why people are ditching 11.4 Hazard for 9.5 Pedro (going for price-rise very soon).

If a team have made 3 subs already and a defender then gets injured and leaves the field leaving them a man short what happens fpl wise?

i.e. He leaves at 0-0 after 80 minutes then a goal is conceded.

Does he count as playing 90 and get 2pts (as he wasnt actually subbed)?
Or does he count as played 80 and get 6 (like someone who gets subbed off)?

Unless a sub replaces him then he's assumed to still be playing. Theoretically he's just off getting treatment - the rules say he can still come back on.

I seem to recall it happening with Soton last season - Toby, I think, went off early and they were forced down to 10 men. I don't think they conceded afterwards but Toby's game stats showed him playing 90.

KDB is primarily an assister, so it should be good for goalscorers like Kun and Yaya. Bound to stretch defences and make more room for Yaya runs into the box... 😉

At 8.5, we can get so many players.
Ozil is a good asset, Chadli seems very determined, Ayew maybe.
As for ManU, the only player worth owning is Mata!

how did aguero look in game at weekend
slight doubt in back of head about him maybe helping to create space for others by dropping out of box.

He was double-teamed and well handled by the Watford defence, who played quite well overall. An early goal would normally be needed for him to haul.

The premier league desperately needs Berbatov at the moment. Not enough magical plays in the premier league at the moment. Everyone is - defend, defend, defend and lets hope for a red card so that we can score 1 and win.

Bah. Aguero is probably the best pure striker in the world. Costa is in the top five. Benteke and Lukaku are in the top twenty. The PL has very good strikers. Most of them are having a coincidental run of few goals, that's all.

Think they will struggle more, losing Clyne and Schneiderlin over the summer. I optimistically started season with Mane+Pelle+Cedric - have now offloaded the two former. They won't be playing a 10 man Norwich each week - they might make it back in my team though if they start to show some consistency.

    McCarthy & Hennessey - Palace ( Can we risk 2 x 4m goalkeepers? )

If we can it makes for a great bit of budgeting at the back

Attached are all the comments from the CP forums on the McCarthy thread

Seems Speroni was a real fans favourite but most seem to have been won round to favouring McCarthy:

    **********

I know outfield players always get a head start over keepers when it comes to man of the match, but Alex McCarthy was MotM for me.

Think we may well have another Nigel Martyn on our hands. Great signing. Can't see Jules getting back in at the moment.

I think he'll keep the shirt.

Agree that he could have done better with their goal, but I like him.

His best performance so far but was beaten on the near post again, has a long way to go before I am convinced he is our first choice keeper.

I'm pretty certain most goalkeepers wouldn't have saved that goal by Falcao today ,it was a great diving header and I think people are looking for problems that aren't there. He looked more confident and composed today and pulled off some fantastic saves.

If he'd let in Sako's first goal that Courtois did, he would have been vilified on here.

Be interesting to see what AP does with him and Jules.

not seen any reason to change him yet. getting better each game. if hennessey stays its going to be tough for speroni to get back in the squad.

He seems to make some great saves, but lets in goals he could easily save.

    A bit like jules then.

For me he's done enough to keep his place. He is improving and gaining in confidence in every game and I can't see him being dropped in favour of Speroni.

if macarthy keeps improving there will not be a decision to make. All i care about is that pards makes the right call for the team and if that means macca and WH are his keepers then so be it. No room for sentimentality. Its great to have 3 decent keepers fighting for 2 spots.

Agreed. The goalkeeping position is now his to lose!

So you think he should be dropped after having in your words "..a really good game yesterday." Ok that makes sense. Lets put speroni back in because he is a "legend" I know its hard people but it may just be time to let go and move on.
