Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 6

Alexander Tettey became the first player to topple off the Suspension Tightrope this season, picking up his fifth yellow for a foul on Philippe Coutinho during Norwich’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday. The Norwegian enforcer – who has amassed a card every 105 minutes this term – now misses the Canaries’ Capital One Cup Third Round match against West Brom on Wednesday, before returning next Gameweek for a trip to West Ham.

Prior to today’s match, Tettey tried to explain the series of combative displays which has now seen him collect a booking in five of the first six Gameweeks:

“If you look at the yellow cards, there is a reason. I don’t go out looking to pick up yellow cards. I have a role in the team and the manager has made it clear what he wants from me in that position. If it was up to me I would be having zero yellow cards. He has been helping me a lot since he came in, in terms of what I should do and always looking at how I play and giving me some advice. He played in my position so he knows exactly what I have to do.”

Elsewhere on the Gameweek 6 Tightrope, the likes of Joe Gomez, Fernandinho, Sebastien Bassong, Erik Dier, Ciaran Clark, Matteo Darmian and Eliaquim Mangala remain on three yellows, having escaped the referee’s wrath in this round of fixtures.

There are six new additions at the three-yellow mark, though, with Jeffrey Schlupp, James Milner, Jack Colback, Andre Ayew, Sebastian Coates and Billy Jones bolstering the ranks after this weekend’s matches.

Turning our attention to the newly-suspended players, Arsenal duo Gabriel and Santi Cazorla were both dismissed during their 2-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday. The former received a straight red for kicking Diego Costa, meaning he’ll sit out the Gunners’ midweek League Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur and two league ties (lei, MUN), before making a potential return in Gameweek 9 for a trip to Watford. Cazorla, meanwhile, was sent off for two bookable offences and is set to miss the midweek cup derby with Spurs. This means he will be back in contention for Saturday’s road encounter at Leicester.

Kevin Mirallas was brought on in the dying embers of Everton’s 0-0 draw against Swansea but still found time to earn a straight red for a studs-up challenge on Swans player Modou Barrow. Nonetheless, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is weighing up the possibility of launching an appeal to the FA:

“I always tell my subs to come on with real intensity so I was pleased with Kevin’s manner. I felt he was more like a striker trying to defend himself and maybe putting in a defensive challenge which looked worse than it actually was. I haven’t seen it in detail but sometimes you need to show a little more common sense and I felt that he clearly didn’t have the intention to hurt the Swansea player. It was more Kevin being fired up trying to get the tempo of the game and trying to help the team. I’m disappointed with the action but not with his manner. I haven’t seen it again but we’ll look at it and if there are grounds for an appeal we’ll look at it.”

Although he received just a yellow during the Blues’ meeting with Arsenal, Diego Costa may yet face retrospective action if referee Mike Dean confirms he failed to see any potential incidents involving the Chelsea striker and Laurent Koscielny on Saturday lunchtime. The FA are studying the whistler’s match report and are expected to announce their verdict tomorrow.

Arsene Wenger is certainly adamant that the Spain international should be punished with what would amount to a three-match ban:

“I don’t want to judge Mike Dean overall but in this game it was surprising that Costa got away with what he did. You go into half-time with a red card and he stays on the pitch.”

Moving onto the players that are currently serving out bans, Valon Behrami still has two league fixtures (CRY, bou) left on his three-match suspension, while Charlie Adam and Aleksandar Mitrovic serve the last of three-match bans in the Capital One Cup.

Adam will skip Stoke’s road tie against Fulham in midweek, meaning he will be available for the Gameweek 7 home clash against Bournemouth. Similarly, Mitrovic will be available for Newcastle’s home clash against Chelsea in Gameweek 7 as we will miss Sheffield Wednesday’s visit on Wednesday.

Potters boss Mark Hughes can also call upon Ibrahim Afellay’s services for their home match-up against Bournemouth next weekend, given that the Dutch winger sat out the second match of his two-game ban this Gameweek. Watford defender Miguel Britos is back in contention for the home clash against Palace after serving out a suspension for violent conduct.

If Bertrand is back in for Targett I'm thinking of playing my first chip this week and burning the AOA chip to field my two man defence.

I have £4.1m and 1FT to upgrade Bentaleb up to an £8.5m mid, so my squad will look like this next week:

    Myhill (EVE)
    Kolarov (tot), Huth (ARS)
Mahrez (ARS), Coutinho (AVL), Sanchez (lei), Depay (SUN), XXX
Aguero (tot), Wilson (stk), Pelle (SWA)

[Hennessey] [Gomez (AVL), Targett (SWA), Muniesa(BOU)]

I will then have a rotating front 8 for weeks 8-10 before my WC in week 11 while using my 3FTs up to the WC to field a defence of some semblance.

These are my current shortlist and would like to hear your opinions:

    A) Payet (NOR) then (sun, cpl, CHE) + 0.8 itb [allows Gomez -> 5.4 or Targett -> 4.8]
    B) Sako (wat) then (WBA, WHM, lei) + 2.9 itb [allows Targett -> 6.9]
    C) Walcott (lei) then (MUN, wat, EVE) +0.0 itb [allows Gomez -> 4.6]
    D) Ayew (sot) then (TOT, STO, avl) + 1.2 itb [allows Gomez -> 5.8 or Targett -> 5.2]
    E) Shaqiri (BOU) then (avl, swa, WAT) + 1.5 itb [allows Gomez -> 6.1 or Targett -> 5.5]
    F) Walters then (avl, swa, WAT) + 2.7 itb [Targett -> 6.7]
    G) Other
    H) Don't play AOA and do Target -> YYY

I think it's too early to say if KDB will be marginalized if wide. I think it's possible they'll be dynamic and it won't matter, and KDB is such a creative talent that perhaps he'll justify inclusion over Silva on the basis of hardiness. Silva is class, no doubt though.

      LVG explains Darmian's early withdrawal:

disagree. Darmian is far and away a better player. we were up against it, only freshly back in the game at 1-1 and Soton were coming at us strong. he's also on 3 yellows so LVG thought he would protect him. I'm confident he'll start Sunderland no problem.

        That's what i'm thinking.

I'm just not sure who to drop out of my midfield without feeling like i'm going to get burnt. Currently got:

        Yaya | Pedro | Mahrez | Sanchez | Surman

Because of the price rises today i can't do Sakho + Surman to Ighalo + Payet. Or i drop Gomis instead.
Payet is just the player i'm scared of the most over these coming weeks.

I had two FTs too. Did Rantie>Ighalo since I play a 352. I plan on benching Chadli this week. I will either hold my other FT or get Hazard/De Bruyne in.

    2FTs. Benteke/westwood > ighalo/payet

Switching to 352. Aoa this week.

    Butland
    Kolarov - Francis
    Sanchez - KDB - pedro - payet - mahrez
    Aguero - ighalo - Wilson

    Bench: mccarthy morgan Targett Gomez

    Thoughts?

    Begovic
    Kolarov Skrtel Dawson (Naughton Coloccini)
    Sanchez Yaya Coutinho Ayew Mahrez
    Aguero Wilson (Rantie)

      LVG explains Darmian's early withdrawal:

"Because he gave too much space to Tadic in my opinion, so that's why I brought on Valencia," Van Gaal told reporters. I didn't see Tadic in the second half, did you?"

You're only looking at it from one side? This is bad news, he is praising Valencia for his performance. Good performance = rewards.

Remember, when LvG signed Darmain he said that Valencia is first choice (Obviosuly he wasn't) but the fact he suggested that shows that he thinks highly of him.

"Remember, when LvG signed Darmain he said that Valencia is first choice (Obviosuly he wasn't) but the fact he suggested that shows that he thinks highly of him."

That is just man management 101. Valencia did a serviceable job as deputy RB and it would be a blow to morale if he lost his place just like that.

Valencia is not a good footballer, never mind a good right back. He's just quick and strong and LVG wanted Tadic closed down and nothing else. I wouldn't read too much into this.

But why could Valencia do a job that Darmain couldn't? To me it shows rotation. Valencia might start ahead of Darmain when he is marking a player with a skill set similar to Tadic.

      Kolarov is unbenchable

Those who benched him at home to West Ham will be pretty happy with themselves.

Morning. Genuinely have no idea where to go next (except one dull defensive move)

    Butland/Mcarthy
    Williams/ Kolorov/ Targett/ Richards/ Gomez
    Pedro/ Yaya/ Maherez/ Westwood/ Sanchez
    Aguero/ Benteke/ Wilson

    1.7 ITB

Sanchez one more week. Hate having Benteke, again 1 more week i guess if not out. Targett can rot on the bench until team value up to make him a 4.5.

    A. Gomez to Dawson
    B Richards to Dawson
C Good God there must be something more exciting than these two moves.(both moves do leave enough cash for Butland to DDG later? Even this sounds wrong.

    Really any help really appreciated.

Gomez or Richards -> Cresswell, Azpi or Dawson

Thanks. Azpi and Creswell worth considering too. So tempted to rage transfer Benteke to Martial.

That's probably the more cathartic move in the short term 😛

I was set to do B myself, but will probably do A after today's game.

Sanchez & Aguero - stick or twist?

Just seems wrong thinking about transferring them out. Thankfully it would be for a hit so that reduces the chances somewhat.....

Before I make these two transfers, is there any news on Diouf? Would prefer not to drop if he's only out another week.

I see people doubling and even tripling up on WBA defence. Is this not extremely risky?

It is.. but that't the punt of it, taking the risk.

No. Best value defenders you can get.

Any double up can get risky. You can't argue with Pulis results though; you get your money's worth.

I don't like it. Didn't like it when people started doubling up on City defence either.

        It has been working though.

They have been getting CS's almost every game.
