Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 6

Alexander Tettey became the first player to topple off the Suspension Tightrope this season, picking up his fifth yellow for a foul on Philippe Coutinho during Norwich’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday. The Norwegian enforcer – who has amassed a card every 105 minutes this term – now misses the Canaries’ Capital One Cup Third Round match against West Brom on Wednesday, before returning next Gameweek for a trip to West Ham.

Prior to today’s match, Tettey tried to explain the series of combative displays which has now seen him collect a booking in five of the first six Gameweeks:

“If you look at the yellow cards, there is a reason. I don’t go out looking to pick up yellow cards. I have a role in the team and the manager has made it clear what he wants from me in that position. If it was up to me I would be having zero yellow cards. He has been helping me a lot since he came in, in terms of what I should do and always looking at how I play and giving me some advice. He played in my position so he knows exactly what I have to do.”

Elsewhere on the Gameweek 6 Tightrope, the likes of Joe Gomez, Fernandinho, Sebastien Bassong, Erik Dier, Ciaran Clark, Matteo Darmian and Eliaquim Mangala remain on three yellows, having escaped the referee’s wrath in this round of fixtures.

There are six new additions at the three-yellow mark, though, with Jeffrey Schlupp, James Milner, Jack Colback, Andre Ayew, Sebastian Coates and Billy Jones bolstering the ranks after this weekend’s matches.

Turning our attention to the newly-suspended players, Arsenal duo Gabriel and Santi Cazorla were both dismissed during their 2-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday. The former received a straight red for kicking Diego Costa, meaning he’ll sit out the Gunners’ midweek League Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur and two league ties (lei, MUN), before making a potential return in Gameweek 9 for a trip to Watford. Cazorla, meanwhile, was sent off for two bookable offences and is set to miss the midweek cup derby with Spurs. This means he will be back in contention for Saturday’s road encounter at Leicester.

Kevin Mirallas was brought on in the dying embers of Everton’s 0-0 draw against Swansea but still found time to earn a straight red for a studs-up challenge on Swans player Modou Barrow. Nonetheless, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is weighing up the possibility of launching an appeal to the FA:

“I always tell my subs to come on with real intensity so I was pleased with Kevin’s manner. I felt he was more like a striker trying to defend himself and maybe putting in a defensive challenge which looked worse than it actually was. I haven’t seen it in detail but sometimes you need to show a little more common sense and I felt that he clearly didn’t have the intention to hurt the Swansea player. It was more Kevin being fired up trying to get the tempo of the game and trying to help the team. I’m disappointed with the action but not with his manner. I haven’t seen it again but we’ll look at it and if there are grounds for an appeal we’ll look at it.”

Although he received just a yellow during the Blues’ meeting with Arsenal, Diego Costa may yet face retrospective action if referee Mike Dean confirms he failed to see any potential incidents involving the Chelsea striker and Laurent Koscielny on Saturday lunchtime. The FA are studying the whistler’s match report and are expected to announce their verdict tomorrow.

Arsene Wenger is certainly adamant that the Spain international should be punished with what would amount to a three-match ban:

“I don’t want to judge Mike Dean overall but in this game it was surprising that Costa got away with what he did. You go into half-time with a red card and he stays on the pitch.”

Moving onto the players that are currently serving out bans, Valon Behrami still has two league fixtures (CRY, bou) left on his three-match suspension, while Charlie Adam and Aleksandar Mitrovic serve the last of three-match bans in the Capital One Cup.

Adam will skip Stoke’s road tie against Fulham in midweek, meaning he will be available for the Gameweek 7 home clash against Bournemouth. Similarly, Mitrovic will be available for Newcastle’s home clash against Chelsea in Gameweek 7 as we will miss Sheffield Wednesday’s visit on Wednesday.

Potters boss Mark Hughes can also call upon Ibrahim Afellay’s services for their home match-up against Bournemouth next weekend, given that the Dutch winger sat out the second match of his two-game ban this Gameweek. Watford defender Miguel Britos is back in contention for the home clash against Palace after serving out a suspension for violent conduct.

No idea what to do for this week. Would really appreciate your opinions lads !

    Butland - (McCarthy)
Darmian - Kolarov - Richards (Muniesa - Targett)
    Yaya - Sanchez - Payet - Mahrez - (Shaqiri)
    Wilson - Aguero - Gomis

    1FT - 1M ITB

    A) Save

Ive gone for it. Its a massive gamble and will probably not pay off but activating my BENCH BOOST for the week so expecting the extra points from the likes of PAYET, BELLERIN and McCarthy to make up for the -8 deficit.

I know Martial is a gamble but United will have space to exploit against Arsenal and seeing their break away I think this kid can be the real deal - from a LFC fan too.

Will bring Danny Sturridge in next week on a free got enough saved up but need to do something drastic as just dropping week after week playing it safe.

    Hi Guys,

I'm trying to work out what changes need to be made, I'm thinking of addressing Gomez first but also want to jump on the Martial bandwagon (swap with Gomis)... Any suggestions welcome:

    Butland (Ruddy)
    Williams Francis Kol (Cedric, Gomez)
    Sanchez Mahrez YYT Payet (Sinclair)
    Gomis Kun Wilson

I had almost the same team as you.
      I did Gomez -> Dawson & Gomis -> Martial for a hit.

I would also do Ruddy -> Myhill, but it's not that urgent since Butland has OK fixtures coming up.

thanks all for your comments. I'm wary against taking point hits (last season they really cost me!). i think i've got enough cover to keep Gomez one more week so reckon I'm gonna jump on this bandwagon and not worry for the rest of the week. I agree that my GKs need sorting too!

I did Gomis -> Martial yesterday for -4.
Hoping it's worth it in the long run.

    (c) will be hard this week:
MCI loooooves to play vs TOT, so I could captain Yaya or Aguero
Or I could captain Martial, who plays vs the team that has conceded the most this far.

Who would you give the (c)-band?

    A) Aguero
    B) Yaya
    C) Martial

I think it's the right decision not to get him but it's always difficult going against the masses, especially given the risk that comes with it. At the end of the day, if you pick him, you are protected by his increasing ownership and have some price rises to fall back on.

I'd do A now and monitor Tekkers. C later in the week if he looks like he's out for the week.

So who would you give the sack from these 3 - Cazorla , Ayew or Shaqiri?

      Cazorla and Shaqiri

Only 1 of them this week tho , next week I will revisit the situation

I was actually thinking of Ayew as Cazorla and Shaqiri have easy fixtures than Ayew

Caz or Shaqiri. Probably difficult to sell Shaq with his fixture though.

Not a fan of Shaqiri at all.. but you bought him in for his good fixtures so give him a chance. Ayew is not a bad option all of a sudden either.. Cazorla just cause of his higher price tag maybe

Should I go along with the masses and do Benteke -> Martial on a free with no other real worries?

2.5m in the bank with 1FT.

    Butland - Ruddy

    Kolarov - Dawson - Francis - Huth - Coates

    Hazard - Payet - Mané - Mahrez - Wanyama

    Aguero - Benteke - Wilson

    GW7 TEAM:

    Butland (Ruddy)
Kolarov | Targett | Huth ............(Ward, Saylor)
    Haz | Yaya | Mahrez | Payet ... (Morrison)
    Martial | Kun | Tekkers

sweating on Tekkers being fit. if not i can downgrade for a hit.

After 6 GW, what are your thoughts of bonus point system this year?

Here are some of my thoughts:

    Goalkeepers :

i like what they did here, they have a decent chance to fights for bonus points with defenders now

    Defenders :

like that pass complementation isn't rewarder as much as last year, but don't like situations like the one this week, when Sagna get 2 bonus points in a game that City lost 2-1, and i watched the game and didn't see anything special in his performance

    Mids :

Ok here, don't think any major changes are required

    Forwards :

my opinion is that for next yeat they should do something about them. They are not getting enough bonus points. I agree that some of them, like Gomis who misses a lot of chances and get offside a lot maybe don't deserve bonus points even if they score, but for me this game should be about scoring goals, and there is a reason why are forwards priced the most and we can have only 3 of them. Don't like to see that in 1-0 games forwards who scored are not getting 3, or even 2 bonus points and i hope this will be fixed next year.

they'll just change it next year to be different so we can't get too used to the system

no use dwelling on what they'll change... just figure out how to best play what the situation is

Head injury.. taken off just as a precaution cause of that. Should be fine for next week.. though Bertrand playing for the reserves tonight is a bigger worry.

Ighalo, Payet and Martial brought home the bacon this weekend....but actually neither of those was the most threatening player at the weekend. In terms of quality Yaya was the scary one.

Yes, now my Sterling purchase looks foolish. Yaya is also the one with least rotation risk. He comes out of his den when City struggle to break through and he's coming out a lot!
