Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 6

United’s new goal hero and Watford’s fine opening displays arrive on our “Digest” radar, whilst Chelsea’s resurgence looks poised to resurrect our interest in Eden Hazard and the Blues backline.

The Player

A finely taken brace against Southampton on Sunday afternoon has catapulted Anthony Martial onto many Fantasy managers’ radars this week.

After netting as a sub in the Gameweek 5 win over Liverpool, Martial earned his first league start under Louis van Gaal and wasted no time in making an impact by firing the Red Devils to a hard-earned 3-2 victory at St Mary’s.

Ahead of a home clash against Sunderland, a staggering 330,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have drafted in the young Frenchman since the weekend, with his price rising from 8.0 to 8.2 in the last 48 hours. Produce the goods against the Black Cats and the bandwagon will kick into overdrive.

With few big-hitters justifying their price tags, Fantasy managers are prepared to turn to the form forwards to fire them up the rankings. Analysis of Martial’s displays for Monaco last year – where he racked up eight goals and an assist over nine league appearances between early March and early May – indicates he’s a confidence striker clearly capable of embarking on scoring streaks.

Certainly, United’s schedule directly after the Sunderland encounter – (ars, eve, MCI) – is anything but straightforward and does suggest a degree of caution. Given that they’ve just put six past Liverpool and the Saints in their last two, though, there’s plenty of reason for optimism that Van Gaal’s men, and Martial, can cement their fixture-proof status.

The Team

A 2-1 win over Newcastle earned Watford a second straight win as Quique Sanchez Flores’ men quickly adapt to life in the Premier League.

After ending Swansea’s unbeaten record in Gameweek 5, the Hornets have maintained momentum under the savvy Spaniard, with Odion Ighalo’s brace at St James’ Park taking his tally to four strikes in the opening six. At a price of just 5.1, the Nigerian has become vital to Watford’s survival quest, having netted all but one of his side’s five goals to date. Ighalo climbed to second in the FPL forward standings on the back of his weekend 13-point return, yet still sits in just 3% of sides, whilst Troy Deeney’s (5.3) trio of assists have also kept his points ticking over, despite his failure to score so far.

It’s not just up front that Watford look great value, though. Flores’ men have conceded just five goals so far – only Spurs and Man City’s backlines have been breached on fewer occasions. Indeed, Watford are the only side yet to concede at home and, having chalked up clean sheets against West Brom, Southampton and Swansea, the likes of Heurelho Gomes, Allan Nyom, Craig Cathcart and Sebastian Prodl offer budget rotation options at just 4.5 apiece.

With Palace, Bournemouth, Stoke and West Ham in the next five, investing in Flores’ main men could well prove a valid tactic as the former Atletico Madrid manager looks to continue his side’s impressive return to the top-flight.

The Talking Point

Back-to-back home wins over Maccabi Tel Aviv and Arsenal have helped spark Chelsea’s flagging season into life and reignited our interest in Jose Mourinho’s key protagonists.

With Eden Hazard opening his account for the campaign in the 2-0 triumph over Arsene Wenger’s outfit, the Belgian is back on the menu as the Blues prepare for a very enticing run of fixtures. Given that Diego Costa could be set for a three-match ban, Hazard’s appeal is heightened at a time where most premium midfield alternatives are toiling – Alexis Sanchez continues to struggle for form, whilst David Silva’s injury worries have kept him sidelined for City’s last two league outings.

Back-to-back clean sheets have also elevated the Blues’ defence after a less-than-impressive opening few matches. With Thibaut Courtois sidelined for the next few weeks, and John Terry no longer a reliable starter, Asmir Begovic (5.0) and Kurt Zouma could soon become the flavour of the month. The latter served up a 15-point return against the Gunners and with Mourinho looking to play a high defensive line, the 5.4-priced Zouma has now started each of the last four Gameweeks. Cesar Azpilicuata, at 6.0, still looks a more secure option, having played from start to finish in all but one of the first six fixtures.

With clashes against Newcastle, Southampton, Villa and West Ham in the following four, Chelsea certainly have the schedule to build on their recent progress and shake up our Fantasy thinking as Mourinho’s men belatedly rediscover their title-winning form.

Think it's a lottery. Everyone was talking of selling haz last week and now one deflected shot later he's flavour of the month.

I'm sure they'll both do well in the long run.

        No, Martial is.

Yes, he could and it might start with Newcastle, or already started last week.

Clearly. My point is no one is suggesting selling haz now but could easily have had a 3 pointer.

You want to take Sanchez out when they're playing the leaky Leicester?

Hazard shouldn't even have scored against Arsenal he's hardly in form

One could argue that Stoke, Newcastle and Chelsea are leaky too.

Right, but you own Sanchez not Hazard. Just stick with him.

Chelsea aren't leaky, they had a poor start to the season. Don't be surprised if they conceide the least amount of goals for the rest of the season

That make no sense? I don't get it, sorry.

I was suggesting Stoke, Newcastle and Chelsea are leaky too but Sanchez still couldn't scored against them.

Chelsea are just 1 goal shy from equaling Sunderland's goal conceded - 13.

Over the season, no. But prior to Arsenal game, yes.

Oh I see, I thought you meant because Hazard is playing Newcastle you should get him.

No I know that Chelsea have been poor but they're gonna tighten up, I'm sure of it. 2 CS's in a row is a start.

Sanchez could have scored 2 in each of those games, he's been very unlucky/missfiring but he's got enough talent to start converting his incredibly underlying stats into points. I'd want Sanchez AND Hazard but wouldn't swap one for the other atm

Agreed, but he still didn't converted those stats, while Hazard already is. Or 'luck' purely on Hazard's side now compared to Sanchez's.

Yeah, both of them is surely tempting, but need to ease off from City assets first. Kun might be off next.

Chelsea played on man advantage and it's not as if Sanchez didn't manage to get to decent positions against Newcastle and Stoke.

Sanchez doesn't have to finish at a Messi-rate to be a brilliant FPL prospect. It suffices that he finishes at a bang average rate. Sure he isn't worse than the average player?

He is not worse than the average players, but if we put his 11.0 price on equation, those points returned is pretty average or worse than average players at the moment.

Hows she looking for this week? Have i got the right (C) and would you play Williams over Francis?

    Myhill (Guzan)
    Kompany Williams Muniesa (Francis, 4.0)
Mahrez Silva Sanchez Depay Payet (C)
    Kun Diouf (4.3)

    Thanks guys

The 4.0 and 4.3 isnt worth the saving for a start.
Your squad so much into 3 players. None of whom are doing that well that it merits a 12 man squad. Especially given Kompany, Silva both missed this week.
Your on thin ice with those 2. And in all honesty, do the 3 big money players merit a 12 man squad, a defence with muniesa and francis, 2 cheap keepers and a cheap 2nd striker? Am I missing something? Do you have 5.0 in the bank or something?

nope 0.1 in the bank lol. Obviously Aguero Sanchez Silva takes up the majority of the budget. Thinking of selling sanchez or Silva to someone like Ayew then upgrading striker to maybe ighalo and a defender like muniesa

Did anyone else see this? The West Ham players got frustrated when Jenkinson was lying "injured" on the pitch when they were leading vs City at the end of the game.

Then Mark Noble went and picked Jenko up and told him to get off the field. Absolute legend!

    RTM, if you could

    Butland (McCarthy)

    Aguero – Vardy - Ighalo

    RE-POST (in hope of replies)

So, pulled my WC out (I need to swap 5-7 players).

This is how it's looking so far:

    Begovic

    Sagna Cresswell Azpi

    Sanchez Yaya Mahrez Payet

    Ighalo Martial (C) Aguero

    McCarthy Dawson Francis Hoolahan

I feel confident and proud I was able to both save a lot of hits value-wise, and build value at the same time. I also got on the Martail early and got the rises, as well as rises for Cresswell, Payet, Mahrez and Ighalo.

So... any glearing holes I should be aware of, and therefore accommodate?
Cheers for any and all feedback.

Sagna is under threat soon as zaba is back. Double Chelsea defense, don't know about that as there are other options too. And Evans should be playing.

From the fact that he (Benteke) is injured. Here, for example:

he isn't 'injured', he is going for a scan today. It could just as easily come back all clear.

He is a doubt but he's not 'unlikely to play' - that's all I was saying.

He is getting scanned, because there's a "problem with his hamstring" in Liverpool's McAllister's words. That problem with hamstring that, for example, makes him unavailable for the midweek cup match, is what we call an 'injury'.

I have no interest in arguing the semantics, I just don't like the scaremongering of comments like 'unlikely to play this weekend' - others read it and take it as read and it just snowballs.

Really? It looks like all you were doing was arguing the semantics.

I kind of agree. Either he's ruled out for 2-3weeks or we're sweating on fri pressers. Bad fixtures after villa too.

Think I'm going to wait till after tomorrow's games and decide between pelle and martial.

    Sagna | | Gomez | Dawson
    Sanchez | Mahrez | KDB | Payet
    Aguero | Gomis | Wilson

    Fabianski | Hoolahan | Huth | Richards

With this tempting to get Azpi before Newcastle (I was thinking that but had more problems so didnt take a hit). Sanchez my captain this week so I wouldnt do the latter 🙂

I'm assuming a lot are in the same position

Dawson or Cedric to start? I also have Gomez so it may not even matter

Been looking at some game stats and Pelle has an outrageous number of shots from the penalty area. Not sure whether him or Mane would be best option when Soton have a clear fixture run?
