Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 8

There were no new victims over the weekend, and no red cards either, but the Suspension Tightrope sleeps for no man, and, after a flurry of cards, it duly snapped up a glut of unwilling funambulists to head into Gameweek 8.

Villa’s Ciaran Clark, Sunderland centre-half Seb Coates and Leicester left-back Jeffrey Schlupp all survived the week unscathed, though the former pair’s causes were helped by the fact they were both unused subs for respective clashes with Liverpool and Man United.

That trio were joined by four new protagonists, who all picked up their fourth cautions of the season in the Gameweek 7 match ups.

The first couple were served up in an action-packed lunchtime clash at White Hart Lane, as Spurs overcame table toppers City with an energetic display that saw five of their front six players booked once they took the lead in the second-half. Goalscorer Eric Dier and his centre midfield partner Dele Alli took their tallies to four for the season for fouls on Fernandinho and Patrick Roberts respectively. Dier has already been drafted in by over 42,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers since the weekend, making him the fourth more sought-after player of the Gameweek.

Next to don the soft shoes and prepare for an acrobatic stint was Sunderland’s Billy Jones. The right-back is no stranger to these parts, with eight bookings in two of the last three seasons, and at least four cards in all of the last five years, despite his failure to secure a regular role at West Brom or Sunderland in that time. Jones scythed down Memphis Depay to earn himself a first taste of the ’15/16 Tightrope.

Finally, the seventh of the current crop of Tightrope walkers – and perhaps one of the most familiar faces of recent times – was Newcastle’s Jack Colback. The combative midfielder joined the party after a first-half booking picked up for a foul on Loic Remy. Fortunately for Jack, injury interrupted his second-half, so he’ll have to wait until at least next week to see if he can add to his growing collection of cards.

True fans of the Tightrope will be more than aware of Colback’s “previous”. Nurtured under the wing of Lee Cattermole at Sunderland, the ginger-haired battler learned quickly from his mentor, picking up a single card in his debut season, upgrading that to three bookings the next term, then five in ’12/13 and seven in his final season with Cattermole on Wearside. A switch to neighbours Newcastle saw Colback blossom into a full-scale disciplinary menace and, in ’14/15, he duly upped his output to 12 cautions – a total bettered only by former team-mate Cattermole (14) last time out. Four cards in just under 650 minutes this season is no surprise, and puts him high on the list of those expected to fall into a ban in his next outing.

Below those players, there are 16 faces currently sitting on three yellows. Branislav Ivanovic, Jose Fonte, Oriol Romeu, Jonjo Shelvey, Yohan Cabaye and Erik Lamela are the new names, having collected a third caution of the campaign over the last two days.

There are no newly-suspended players so far this week, with only tomorrow’s Hawthorns clash between West Brom and Everton remaining.

Arsenal’s Gabriel is available for selection again, having served a one-match ban in yesterday’s 5-2 win at Leicester. Three players still remain suspended for Gameweek 8. Diego Costa, Kevin Mirallas and Valon Behrami all serve the last of three-bans against Southampton, Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively.

My team is not looking healthy. Should I take a hit to fix my defence? That lump called Gomez needs to go but there is always bigger fish to fry like Wilson this week.

    Butland (McCarthy)
Kolarov - Williams - Richards (Darmian, Gomez)
Sanchez- KDB - Coutinho - Mahrez (Ww)
    Aguero - Martial - Vardy

Won't call them tough as long as Sturridge's putting them in,that helps Coutinho's potential.

Based on Motd Sutds and Cout linked very well but those fixtures looks tough to me.

If you don't already have Payet I would choose him instead.

No,I don't have Payet. My 4th mid spot is up for grabs. Confused between Coutinho,Payet,Mata and Mane. Thought about Coutinho coz he's playing behind Sturridge and Ings and is taking whole lot of shots.

Milner seems to take majority of set piece duties.

Payet gets 3 baps with only 1 assist, is still great value and have still have good fixtures coming. I wish I had him instead of Coutinho

seriously? I've captained him everytime but don't think i can do it again. He just looks like a shell of himself at the moment. On a WC and getting KDB in so will probaly giv him the amband. Then again last minute I'll probably switch back to aguero even though in no way do i want to!

    Good Morning,

I was happily surfing with my strong front8, but now after Wilson injury, looks like it's time to go back for basics and free some money from midfield.

I'm thinking A is the way to go, toughts?

    A) Ayew, Wilson => Hoolahan, Vardy
Leaves me money for defence upgrade gw9, probably Gomez => Evans

    B) Gomez, Wilson => Cook (Bou), Vardy
Nothing in the bank so would leave me without wba defence (Kola, Darmian, Richards, Ward, Cook)

    Thanks

is this for a hit? and can you would you consider ighalo for wilson using 1 ft?

        • 13 Years
        8 years, 7 months ago

Yes it's for a hit, but I'm thinking I rather take Vardy for a hit than Ighalo.
Just thinking that he will pay me back in next weeks.

And taking hit now, means I can avoid price drops for two of my players + getting some rises for Vardy.

It's hard to know where to start.

          Let's do the priorities then.

Swap Haz for KGB. I'd also swap Rooney for Kun. Start with them too.

The ideal forward line right now is Kun, Vardy and Sacko imo. Kun's fixtures could well return a deluge of points and I feel you need to cover yourself against this.

              Good Luck!

What is my priority here? So many issues. 1 ft and Only 0.5 in bank so can't do Wilson to vardy

    Butland McCarthy
    Kol darmian Richards Gomez ward
    Pedro Sanchez kdb mahrez Westwood
    Wilson gomis aguero

Looking at Pedro Wilson to vardy payet for a hit. Is that crazy? Just feel I have too much cash I midfield and this allows me to get pelle for gomis next week and cash to upgrade Gomez as well. Gives my team a much better balance

Those transfers look good but I still think Pedro will do well over the next few weeks. Payet is looking great though and the cash it'll give you to upgrade Gomez & Gomis probably means I'd do it.

I have exactly same defence and same option on Gomez, Wilson => 4.4 def + Vardy in.
Don't like it because that would leave us with really poor defence and no money for upgrades.

  15. Doubling Up - Arsenal
    Zasa

Wanted to look at this Arsenal debacle from a statistical perspective.

In defense of Arsenal, both City & them boast the best attacks thus far, coupled with great underlying stats to boot. There is very little to point towards either a defensive or offensive regression.

One example here, looking at the expected goals & expected goals conceded data (arguably one of the most reliable & trusted statistics out there) from respected members of the analytics community. This graph examines the schedule ahead, adjusts for home/away and the quality of opponent: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CP2qJyrUcAAZCP3.png:large

    - Arsenal far & away dominate in the offensive category here, doubling all teams here for expected goals (xG) other than ManCity, Spurs & ManUnited.

    To further back this: http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/1151/
    - #1 Overall, & dominate all important stats other than Total Goals & Assists, which suggest they are STILL under-performing offensively.

    Furthermore, individually:
    - http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/939/ - 2 Arsenal players here in the top three.
    - http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/1373/ - A whopping 4 Arsenal players consist of the top seven.

Bonus - http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/6070/ - Coincidentally two Arsenal players here suggesting they're ripe to reap the rewards of the teams' xG.

In summary, as oppose to considering taking an Arsenal attacking asset, doubling up on their attack may just be the way to go, IMO

Currently only own Alexis after having started the season with Theo as well.

The issue with the Arsenal players are:

      1. Theo: At the moment we aren't sure whether he will start or rotate with Giroud. Giroud banned from CL also means Theo will start during the week and maybe rested during the week end. Constant rotation means I'm personally not ready to invest 8.5M on him regardless of his potential "explosion".

      2. Ramsey: Constantly playing out of position on the right wing and hasn't rediscovered his form from 2 seasons ago. Everyone knows he has it in his locker but currently making the wrong decision on the final ball after finding himself in good positions.

      3. Cazorla: Playing that deep CM role along Coq doesn't really allow him to bomb forward and score as many points as in previous seasons. He will create a play for other mids to assist and not reap any rewards for it in terms of points. Still a good option as he's on pens (even though refs have decided not to give us any this season *cough* Liverpool home *cough* Newcastle away...)

      4. Ozil: Simply refuses to shoot and will always look for the assist.

All these factors have pushed me to just own one arsenal asset in Sanchez who just carries the team and will make something happen...

Once Theo is nailed he'll be the way to go to double up on Arsenal mids.

      Thoughts ?

I definitely agree with your take on the latter three, none of them appeal to me too much considering they lack the open-play goal threat of Theo & Sanchez.

Regarding Theo, he truly is a riddle wrapped inside of an enigma. I think the problem is that there will always be a reason to justify not getting him. There's a high ceiling of points to be had here & if you have a decent bench as a safety net, he's definitely worth the risk, IMO. His PPG don't lie.

But he only has 3.7ppg, so he's only the joint 33rd best midfielder based on PPG, and joint 35th on total score.

Are you thinking of something else, such as points per 90 minutes?

If only we knew when he was going to start!

One of the problems is that when he doesn't start he doesn't stay on the bench, but comes off it instead to make a disappointing score.
And even when he does score, he still doesn't get any bonus points.

              His FPL points this season:
              GW1: 33 mins, 1 point
              GW2: did not play
              GW3: 18 mins, 1 point
              GW4: 69 mins, 3 points
              GW5: 74 mins, 8 points (1 goal)
              GW6: 90 mins, 2 points
              GW7: 79 mins, 7 points (1 goal)

In how many of these did he start?
Were most of those 13 starts last season?
His points per game (rather than per start) weren't that brilliant last season either - he just got a few impressive returns right at the end!

Good work, Zasa. Your arguments add weight to my idea of playing with 3-5-2 simply because of Walcott's recent starts.

If I knew he was assured of starts. I'd probably would go 3-5-2. See below too.

Thanks, Jafa 🙂 Definitely, goal-scoring mids are in abundance this season. 352 looks as strong, if not stronger than 343 imo.

That midfield looks great, I'm also looking at a similar midfield, & looking at switching to a 343/352 hybrid very soon.

        I agree 🙂

      Nice work Zasa!

I've been thinking about getting Walcott in my team, which is already playing 352. That way, even when he doesn't play, I've got a good sub to come on for him. He's already started the last 4 PL games which is encouraging.

        Cheers Jaffa 🙂

Definitely go for it, like you said, you have a good sub. In that case, that potential risk that comes with Theo, is largely negate IMO. Having a Sako, Ighalo, etc as a super sub is a great incentive to get your feet wet 🙂

Just want to say that the expected goals graph doesn't examine the upcoming schedule. I'm pretty sure it's just the expected goals created and conceded so far but normalised for the quality of opposition faced. https://twitter.com/MC_of_A/status/647861007277268992

Ah yes, thanks for pointing that out. Having a closer look, he said 'schedule-adjusted', you're right. Nevertheless, taking my point of upcoming fixtures out of equation, in that graph the underlying stats still point towards an under-performing attack.

Oh yeah definitely! Love the expG stuff, always good to see it on here. West Ham and Leicester's expected goals are particularly interesting. They've both scored 15 yet according to that graph have only got an expG of 7.

Indeed, xG is treat, this particular algorithm predicted Kane's meteoric rise way before anyone else. Nice find 😉 Many xG charts (including this one) put both those teams in a bad light. They've been heavily predicting a regression since last week. Definitely something to keep an eye on though. At least both have good fixtures.

Did the Evans vs Dawson debate -
          1. Evans is now playing only once a week, in a team around him that prioritises defence and under less pressure as compared to at United.
          2. Is 0.2m less than Dawson
          3. The small sample size suggests that he'll get more BAP's than Evans.

This swayed me into preferring Evans. I know he is injury prone, but is there something else that I'm missing?

Read somewhere in the comments that over the last 2-3 GW's, CB's have been getting more BAP's than fullbacks.
Also, I haven't really seen West Brom play. Do their full back's go further forward and pose attacking threats?

It all comes down to the No 1 rule in FF:

            Pick players that play.

They'll be too many times Evans will let you down with injuries.

Also, if I do Gomez > Dawson/Evans and Ayew to Payet, it doens't leave me enough money to upgrade Oxford/Targett in the near future. Risky business no?

Anyone else thinking of 3-5-2 if the forwards keep blanking?

With Walcott OOPing, it is quite tempting to play a midpark of:

Payet, KGB, Mahrez, Walcott and Sanchez.

😀 Doubling up on Arsenal with those fixtures? And Aguero, Sturridge can become essential in just a couple of weeks.

True but it's working with Wham and Lei.

You kind of feel though that Walcott and Sanchez will score against anyone.

I believe murray will do well should he get enough game times. He may repeat what he did last season at crystal palace. Clinical too
