Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 8

There were no new victims over the weekend, and no red cards either, but the Suspension Tightrope sleeps for no man, and, after a flurry of cards, it duly snapped up a glut of unwilling funambulists to head into Gameweek 8.

Villa’s Ciaran Clark, Sunderland centre-half Seb Coates and Leicester left-back Jeffrey Schlupp all survived the week unscathed, though the former pair’s causes were helped by the fact they were both unused subs for respective clashes with Liverpool and Man United.

That trio were joined by four new protagonists, who all picked up their fourth cautions of the season in the Gameweek 7 match ups.

The first couple were served up in an action-packed lunchtime clash at White Hart Lane, as Spurs overcame table toppers City with an energetic display that saw five of their front six players booked once they took the lead in the second-half. Goalscorer Eric Dier and his centre midfield partner Dele Alli took their tallies to four for the season for fouls on Fernandinho and Patrick Roberts respectively. Dier has already been drafted in by over 42,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers since the weekend, making him the fourth more sought-after player of the Gameweek.

Next to don the soft shoes and prepare for an acrobatic stint was Sunderland’s Billy Jones. The right-back is no stranger to these parts, with eight bookings in two of the last three seasons, and at least four cards in all of the last five years, despite his failure to secure a regular role at West Brom or Sunderland in that time. Jones scythed down Memphis Depay to earn himself a first taste of the ’15/16 Tightrope.

Finally, the seventh of the current crop of Tightrope walkers – and perhaps one of the most familiar faces of recent times – was Newcastle’s Jack Colback. The combative midfielder joined the party after a first-half booking picked up for a foul on Loic Remy. Fortunately for Jack, injury interrupted his second-half, so he’ll have to wait until at least next week to see if he can add to his growing collection of cards.

True fans of the Tightrope will be more than aware of Colback’s “previous”. Nurtured under the wing of Lee Cattermole at Sunderland, the ginger-haired battler learned quickly from his mentor, picking up a single card in his debut season, upgrading that to three bookings the next term, then five in ’12/13 and seven in his final season with Cattermole on Wearside. A switch to neighbours Newcastle saw Colback blossom into a full-scale disciplinary menace and, in ’14/15, he duly upped his output to 12 cautions – a total bettered only by former team-mate Cattermole (14) last time out. Four cards in just under 650 minutes this season is no surprise, and puts him high on the list of those expected to fall into a ban in his next outing.

Below those players, there are 16 faces currently sitting on three yellows. Branislav Ivanovic, Jose Fonte, Oriol Romeu, Jonjo Shelvey, Yohan Cabaye and Erik Lamela are the new names, having collected a third caution of the campaign over the last two days.

There are no newly-suspended players so far this week, with only tomorrow’s Hawthorns clash between West Brom and Everton remaining.

Arsenal’s Gabriel is available for selection again, having served a one-match ban in yesterday’s 5-2 win at Leicester. Three players still remain suspended for Gameweek 8. Diego Costa, Kevin Mirallas and Valon Behrami all serve the last of three-bans against Southampton, Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively.

WC Draft. What does everyone think to this?

    Myhill (Gomes)
    Francis, Sagna, Dawson (Nyom, Martin)
    Mahrez, Sanchez, Sterling, Mane (Drinkwater)
    Sturridge, Aguero, Ighalo

Like it alot to be honest.

Not sure i would take Sturridge yet or Sagna with Zab nearly back but hey, dull if we all the same!

A risky move could be Gomes to a 4.0, play Myhill all the time and make one of your 4.5 def into a 5.0

See, I was thinking of bringing Sturridge in at a later date but he could be a great differential even with Liverpool's upcoming fixtures. And I've swapped Sagna with Kolorov because of that reason.

Maybe need a few more quid spent in defence but really not an issue with your front 8. maybe dont need Myhill and Dawson perhaps butland instead.

On the plus side, he only got 21 for a triple (C) - you can do better than that with a goal and an assist / DGW.

Can it wait a week? Haven't lost any selling value on him yet so I expect my worst case is a 0.1m drop in selling value over the next 1-2 weeks.

Vardy is bang on form, but I'd still take a Walcott or KDB (with those fixtures) over him I think.

Leaning towards Pedro as he faces a tougher defence this GW but fixtures afterwards are gold.

Its OK, std move. Personally i think the stats indicate a good chance of some regression for Vardy as his goal conversion rate is a bit higher than the long term avg for the league. Ive gone elsewhere.

Dont get me wrong, he's a very decent choice! Ive just decided to slightly gamble elsewhere. I may still yet end up with Vardy in one of my other 2 slots, i think theres even a chance hes a better long term option than Mahrez.....

Just a warning for Mane owners, he has a plum fixture after the international break which looks tempting but he's likely to play for Senegal in Guinea in an African Nations Cup qualifiers TWO days before. Last time that happened he was benched at West Brom.

I was tempted by Mane but now looking at Tadic instead for this reason. On pens too.

Anyone else fancying Martial with the armband again this week? Think he could be a nice differential captain this week, big game player from what we've seen till now, big game manager, Arsenal struggle against Man Utd historically, susceptible to counters (case in point - last year's same fixture), Martial rapid on the counter.. also has already done well at the Emirates in the CL. For those who still have Aguero - great fixture sure but horrid form, with an important CL tie looming he could even find himself rested for Saturday to prevent exertion..

    1. DVassell
      • 12 Years

I would rather captain Sanchez in that game- also Cech is he key difference with Arsenal back line this season

      1. MemphisDepay7
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 7 months ago

Alexis has never done well for Arsenal in big games - couldn't even do well up against Ivanovic whom every winger is having fun with. Would definitely not go that way.

They had 11 in the first half and a ghost would have been as visible as Alexis then. Even if you leave that out he has been pretty anonymous in every big game Arsenal played last season bar the City ones.

    2. Rains of Castamere

I think Memphis and Martial could be serious weapons at the Emirates, especially if United score first and can then break (like last season). Wouldn't consider either captain material, though.

Aguero won't be rotated, city have lost consecutive league matches and need to return to winning ways, esp prior to CL. And you don't need to be on great form when you have that midfield behind you. It's only a matter of time before he does what Sanchez did at the weekend!

    Pick A or B?

    A) Sinclair at home to leaky Stoke (having been involved in 100% of villa's home goals)
    B) A flailing Gomis at home to a defensively solid and confident Spurs side (on the back of a huge win)

My worry is that Sinclair has been drubbed off early twice from 3 home matches, but Gomis has recently been subbed off at half time, so also is a risk.

    1. Wardinator

    Morning!

    What would you do?
    2FT
    0.2ITB

    Myhill, Butland
    Darmian, Targett, Richards, Bellerin, Kolarov
    Surman, Mahrez, Payet, KDB, Sanchez
    Kun, Diouf, Gomis

ditch Gomis for one of the obvious and look at what you can do with Surman or targett but other than that it's looking good maybe save a transfer

Bit annoyed I chose the popular Vardy route for my Wilson replacement. By getting Bojan instead I would have been able to switch to 3-5-2 after int. break.

Lots of great midfield options and cheap strikers atm.
