The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 9 – The Midfielders

After assessing the risers and fallers among the Defence on Saturday, our attention this afternoon turns to the midfield. There is no shortage of in-form options to choose from, with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez moving to the top of our ladder this week, though Kevin de Bruyne and Sadio Mane are hot on his heels following their double-digit scores in Gameweek 8.

Having cast aside his scoring drought, Alexis Sanchez highlighted his explosive potential over the last two Gameweeks, scoring five goals and bagging 36 goals in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). The former Barcelona attacker, available at 11.2 in FPL, lies second among midfielders for shots in the box over the last four Gameweeks with 16, but does face a fairly tricky run of fixtures (wat, EVE, swa, TOT, wba, nor) over the coming period.

One player who is close to matching Sanchez’ output is Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne. The 10.3-priced Belgian has scored three goals and provided two assists in his last three outings, and faces four home fixtures (BOU, NOR, LIV, SOT) over the next six Gameweeks, along with trips to Man United and Aston Villa. De Bruyne has only registered four shots from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, however, although he has also created a more impressive 13 chances over the same period. With doubts surrounding Yaya Toure and David Silva in the City midfield, the Belgian looks vital to his side’s prospects of remaining at the summit.

While Southampton’s Sadio Mane comes in a lot cheaper than Sanchez and De Bruyne, at just 7.9 in FPL, the Senegal international is certainly capable of delivering double-figure scores, as he has done twice over the last five Gameweeks. The Saints attacker has found the back of the net in his last two appearances, and has four favourable match-ups (LEI, liv, BOU, sun, STO, mci) over the next month or so in which to continue his fantastic form.

West Ham’s Dimitri Payet remains towards the top of our ladder after registering attacking returns for the fourth match running, scoring in the Hammers 2-2 draw at Sunderland in Gameweek 8. The France international’s price has risen to 8.1 in FPL on the back of his outstanding form, but the former Marseille man does have a slightly more testing schedule (cpl, CHE, wat, EVE, tot, WBA) over the coming period.

After being surprisingly dropped to the bench against Norwich, Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez slips a few places in our rankings. Although the forthcoming fixtures (sot, CPL, wba, WAT, new, MUN) are fairly favourable for Claudio Ranieri’s side, the uncertainty over Mahrez’ pitch time hurts his prospects at this point.

Goals from the penalty spot in his last two matches mean Crystal Palace’s Yohan Cabaye finds a place on our ladder in our latest update. The 6.5-valued midfielder also bagged an assist in the 2-0 win against West Brom, and netted for France over the recent break, underlining his buoyant form ahead of a favourable upcoming schedule for the Eagles (WHM, lei, MUN, liv, SUN, NEW).

Although he has a goal and two assists from his last three appearances, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard is clearly struggling to live up to his 11.3 price tag in FPL. The Belgian is third among midfielders for chances created over the last four Gameweeks, with 15, and does have a good run of fixtures (AVL, whm, LIV, sto, NOR, tot) on the horizon. Hazard looks well behind the likes of Sanchez and De Bruyne in terms of the premium midfield options available to Fantasy managers, and may struggle to attract further investment until Jose Mourinho’s side shows signs of improvement.

With some difficult fixtures (eve, MCI, cpl) in the short-term, Man United’s Juan Mata stays around halfway up our ladder. The underlying statistics are also not hugely encouraging for the Spaniard, having only managed 10 penalty box touches in his last four appearances, and only registered two shots from inside the box, But the 8.9-rated midfielder does face some kinder match-ups from Gameweek 12 onwards (WBA, wat, lei).

While Swansea’s Andre Ayew returned to form with a goal in the 2-2 draw against Tottenham, and faces a favourable run of fixtures (STO, avl, ARS, nor, BOU) over the next few weeks, the drop off in some of his attacking statistics are a cause for concern. The Ghanaian attempted 10 shots from inside the box during the first four Gameweeks of the season, but only managed three in his last four outings. Priced at 7.2 in FPL, though, the former Marseille attacker still looks good value.

His assists against Palace and City may have gone under the radar, but Christian Eriksen definitely stated his claim for consideration in our five-man midfields with two magnificent free-kicks against Swansea. The Denmark international, available at 8.3 in FPL, only has an ownership of 3%, and with four home matches in the next six (LIV, bou, AVL, ars, WHM, CHE), could warrant some consideration as a differential for those looking to make up lost ground.

Having started Arsenal’s last five matches as the lone forward, the stock of Theo Walcott continues to rise. As already mentioned, the Gunners forthcoming fixtures aren’t the easiest, but given the England international leads all midfielders for shots in the box, with 17, and is so favourably priced at just 8.6 in FPL, there’s little doubt he holds more upside than virtually any other midfielder at this point. Investing in Walcott does carry a risk, though, given Olivier Giroud is also likely to earn starts in attack for the north London outfit.

Although Everton’s Ross Barkley has blanked in his last three matches, with the Toffees schedule turning favourably from Gameweek 11 onwards (SUN, whm, AVL, bou), we’re keeping faith in the England international. The 6.9-priced midfielder has created 13 chances over the last four Gameweeks, more than the likes of Mata (seven) and Walcott (five), and should be able to deliver on those numbers with those kind fixtures on the horizon. In the short-term, the match-ups against Man United and Arsenal could yield further blanks, however.

With a goal and an assist in tough fixtures against Chelsea and City, Newcastle’s Georginio Wijnaldum sneaks into our rankings this week. The Magpies face a very favourable run of fixtures (NOR, sun, STO, bou, LEI, cpl) over the next six Gameweeks, so the 6.8-valued Dutchman certainly looks one to monitor at the very least. He has only managed one shot from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, however.

Although Jeremain Lens will miss Sam Allardyce’s first match in charge for Sunderland at West Brom, the rest of the Black Cats’ fixtures over the next six weeks (NEW, eve, SOT, cpl, STO) mean the Dutch international clings onto a place on our ladder. The 6.5-rated wide man has scored twice and provided three assists so far this season, and should Big Sam be able to turn things around at the Stadium of Light, it’s likely that Lens will be central to any improvement.

While there is currently a feel-good factor sweeping around Anfield following the appointment of Jurgen Klopp, the difficulty of his first six matches in charge (tot, SOT, che, CPL, mci, SWA) means Philippe Coutinho only fills the final spot in our rankings. The Brazilian has encouragingly managed 20 goal attempts in his last three appearances though, and should be central to the German’s plans, but with so many other in-form options for FPL bosses to ponder over in midfield, the 8.1-priced Coutinho may well struggle to attract investment until the schedule turns more favourably for the Reds.

    Already have Pelle & Vardy. Trying to work out the best Aguero replacement.

    Currently on Martial. Thoughts?

    A daft early transfer could cost me this week. Already done Gomis to Pelle but considering taking a -8 to do Aguero and Westwood to Lukaku and Walcott and using aoa as defence is such a mess.

    Could this pay off or better just getting rid of Aguero and relying on Westwood/Richards?

    Butland
    Kolarov Darmian (Richards Ward Gomez)
    Payet Sanchez Walcott Mahrez KDB
    Lukaku Pelle Vardy

        Good luck with all those Newcastle and Sunderland defenders! And I assume you didn't have Aguero before he scored 5? Because he wasn't exactly on form before then was he?

        I'm only joking, this is obviously a rough guide. It would be interesting to see what team you would get if you followed these rules strictly though.

      I've got Costa in already. Aston Villa look very fragile defensively and Costa (if he's anywhere near his best) will really bully them and take advantage of their weaknesses. Chelsea also have a huge point to prove, if they go ahead early, they won't look to defend their leads as they have done in the past, I think they'll look to score as many as they can to build confidence.

      I'm not saying I think it will definitely happen, but there's great potential for Chelsea to score 4+ in this game, and Costa is most likely to play the biggest part in it. I did consider Hazard but I feel it will be easier to downgrade Costa to Pelle/Lukaku if it turns out I've made a mistake.

          Yes, there is, but that's why he's being overlooked by so many. If he'd just scored a hattrick last week 90% of people would make the swap. I'm gambling this will be the game he returns to form, if he get's a hattrick and I have him captain I could get a simialr rise to the 1.7m places I jumped last week!
          I want to win the game (Or top 1000) and I'm currently a long way behind, so I'm willing to gamble. Anyone who wants a safe option, just go with Pelle.

            that's fair enough but the stats and even with the naked eye, he doesn't look capable of scoring a hat trick. I could be wrong but Chelsea just look out of sorts and I think they look doomed

              • 9 Years

              Yeah that's all true. But Aston Villa have been even worse, especially away from home. So I'm looking at it from that side aswell.

              Costa has also had nearly a month? since his last game. That's plenty of time to have gotten up to fitness, which he's admitted wasn't 100% before. It's just a confidence issue with Chelsea, they're still quality players.

              Look at Man City last week, they'd lost a few on the bounce and then 40 mins into the game they're still 1-0 down to Newcastle, NEWCASTLE! But Aguero got one goal, then another lucky deflection.. Newcastle's confidence was shot, Aguero's was now sky high, and the rest.. well we know.

              Costa is not Aguero, but at something like his best, he's still an animal. Even if he just gets 1 goal, in a week with no Aguero, he's probably done enough to justify the move. He's odds on with the bookies to score, so it's likely that will happen as a minimum. I don't see it as such a big risk as some.

              Going without Pelle is the risky part.. but I've brought in Tadic to try and minimise that somewhat.

                He could easily bag a brace, I guess. That's what I felt when I brought him in earlier in the season, and he did nothing but play like a horse's arse. Good luck on it. You could reap some rewards. No way to truly predict what will happen, so might as well roll the dice.

        Doos atm front 8 looks like:

        Hazard, Sanchez, Payet, Mahrez, Xxx
        Pelle, Vardy, Xxx

        It can be:
        Ighalo + Kdb
        Or
        Westwood + Sturridge /Costa /Kane

      KDB in a 352. He played a part in over 40 goals last season and started awesome this season.

      Who cares how many touches in the box he has? Absolutely meaningless stat.

    Plagued with injuries right now. What's the best option here? Have no Man City players if Kolarov is out

    Hennessey, Schmeichel
    Kolarov*, Koscielny**, Francis, Cedric, Saylor**
    Sanchez, Ayew*, Payet, Mahrez, Fletcher
    Kun**, Martial, Pelle

    1 FT and 0.6m itb

    A) Kun -> Lukaku
    B) Kun + Ayew -> Lukaku + KDB (-4)
    C) Kun + Kosc -> Lukaku + Berllerin/Coleman (-4)
    D) Wildcard

              I would probably WC with that team/injuries

              I would get Lukaku with his games coming after the next two games.

              Bony could be tempting with Bourn, Norw, Villa in his next 4.

      Alternatively, You could make 3 useful trades, go minus 8, and preserve your wc.

      Prioritize Aguero and Ayew. I have Kosc, too, and is slated to come back gw10, so his removal is not critical. However, if you feel a different defender is apt to get a clean sheet (eg, Bellerin), then that is a viable move,motel (I also considering this).

        If I don't remove Kosc, then I'm forced to play Francis. Then there's the issue with Kolarov being doubtful

        Not keen of playing -8 but may consider it

              Sorry, I had to step away...I am inclined to take hits, up to 12, but I should stop at 8. I fear that the wc may come in more handy in a few weeks, after either gw11 or the next international break, gw13. I am still on the fence!

    A lot of ppl are recommending Van Djik over Bertrand based on his showing at Celtic last season.. But a couple of his goals came from direct free kicks(not sure if he's even near them at Soton with Tadic and JWP there) and a lot of them came from the ball falling to his feet in the box from set pieces rather than of his head and that rarely happens in the EPL. Still a good attacking threat mind.. but Bertie offers a good threat too for 0.2 less. Tough one really

    1. Valar(Keith)
      • 14 Years

      That being said he is known for making the old Vermaelen/Vertonghen runs and moving into the attacking third during open play.. but again i'm not sure if that will be curbed or not in the EPL

    Best option here lads (assuming Kolarov is ok)?

    A) Kun -> Lukaku/Bony/Costa
    B) Sinclair & Kun -> KDB & Bony/Lukaku (-4)
    C) Pedro & Kun -> Haz/KDB & Bony/Lukaku (-4)

    Planning to WC in GW11 or GW13

    Ruddy
    Kolarov, Bellerin, Huth
    Sanchez, Pedro, Mane, Mahrez
    Aguero, Pelle, Vardy

    Rudd, Sinclair, Coates, Targett

            It is tempting, but I'm not sure Pedro out is a good move. You don't fancy him to regain his place?

    Lukaku's stats are actually really ipressive considering he has played against City,Liverpool,Chelsea, Soton,Tottenham and Wba. All top defences.

    His stats are almost good as Aguero's.

      FFS. He has scored against:

      Saints (2) - Early Doors ...
      WBA(!) (2)
      'Pool (1)

      and BLANKED in the other 5!!!

    How am i currently sitting on this WC team? Kolarov can be swapped if he is not fit

    Butland
    Monreal, Bertrand, Kolarov
    Mane, Mahrez, KDB, Sanchez, Payet
    Pelle, Costa

    (Hennessey), Jerome, Souare, Simpson

      Pretty good. Not too sure on Costa myself but that's just my opinion (always liable to a red card here and there). If Ward is back I would have him over Souare. And I don't like the Simpson gamble on a WC.

        I know the simpson shout is poor but enables me to improve elsewhere and the 4 defenders i have are nailed par kolarov but he is likely to come out of the team soon. I have a feeling fat boy Costa will do something soon.

        Thanks for the advice

    WC team....thoughts?

    Gomes Elliot

    Janmaat Cedric Kolarov Dawson Simpson

    Sanchez Mane KDB Mahrez Watson

    Pelle Mitrovic Berahino

    7.1 ITB.

    Not sure about the Mitrovic/Berahino punt instead of Lukaku. Those fixtures are hard to ignore.
