The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 9 – The Forwards

Having run through the changes among the defence and midfield over the past few days, we’re completing our look at the latest movements on our Watchlist with an analysis of the forwards. With three goals and four assists in his last trio of appearances, Graziano Pelle moves all the way to the top of our ladder in light of Sergio Aguero’s hamstring injury, whilst Swansea’s Bafetimbi Gomis takes a tumble after drawing blanks in each of his last four matches.

With that sensational form and some favourable fixtures (LEI, liv, BOU, sun, STO) over the next five Gameweeks, Southampton’s Graziano Pelle moves to the top of our rankings. The Italy international is the second most transferred-in player over the international break, with over 174,000 new owners in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), seeing his price rise to 8.1. The former Feyenoord man leads all forwards for shots inside the box so far this season with 32, seven clear of his nearest rival Aguero.

Another forward that has been unstoppable over the last few weeks is Leicester’s Jamie Vardy. Priced at 6.7, he has scored six goals in his last five outings, and leads all frontmen for shots inside the box (17) over the last four Gameweeks. With a reasonable slate of fixtures (sot, CPL, wba, WAT, new, MUN) on the horizon, the England international’s strong run of form could continue for some time yet.

The stock of Romelu Lukaku continues to rise with Everton’s difficult start to the season nearly behind them. The Toffees face Man United and Arsenal over the next two weekends, but thereafter their schedule is very favourable (SUN, whm, AVL, bou). The Belgian has averaged 11.5 points per appearance over the last two Gameweeks, and looks poised to become a genuine contender for a spot in our three-man frontlines in the coming weeks.

Although Anthony Martial has been very impressive in the early stages of his career at Old Trafford, the fact he’s only managed five shots from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks is a cause for concern. United also face a tricky stretch on their schedule (eve, MCI, cpl, WBA, wat, lei), particularly in the short-term, and while the France international represents great value at 8.4 in FPL, now is probably not the time to invest in the former Monaco striker.

Watford’s Odion Ighalo continues to be the stand-out budget option for Fantasy managers, having netted four times in as many matches. The Hornets frontman only sets us back 5.3 in FPL, and while he faces difficult home match-ups against Arsenal and Man United over the next six Gameweeks, he also faces four reasonable fixtures (sto, WHM, lei, avl). The Nigerian also leads all forwards for bonus points accrued this season, with 10.

Sergio Aguero remains on the Watchlist as we await confirmation of his hamstring injury from Manchester City. Certainly, the Argentine’s suggestion that he could be out for a month has already sparked plenty of sales and if, as expected, he is indeed ruled out, then it’s fair to say that Wilfried Bony, at 8.2, would be elevated in the rankings ahead of clashes against Bournemouth, Norwich and Villa in the next four Gameweeks.

The big faller in our latest refresh is Swansea’s Bafetimbi Gomis, who has seen his price in FPL drop from 7.5 in Gameweek 6 to 7.1 now. The good news for the Frenchman’s remaining 20.1% ownership is that he faces four favourable fixtures (STO, avl, ARS, nor, BOU) over the next five Gameweeks, and has managed a reasonable 10 goal attempts in his last four outings. Should the former Lyon forward fail to deliver the goods against Stoke and Aston Villa, however, his ownership looks certain to keep dwindling.

With four home matches on the upcoming schedule (LIV, bou, AVL, ars, WHM, CHE), Harry Kane moves up a couple of spots on our ladder this week. The 9.2-rated forward was very unfortunate to score an own goal against Swansea last time out, but with chief creator Christian Eriksen now back to full fitness, his prospects certainly look brighter. Bearing in mind he’s only found the back of the net once this season, though, Kane is unlikely to attract significant investment until we see him rediscover his sharpness in front of goal.

The start of the campaign could hardly have gone much worse for Diego Costa, but with the Spain international now back from suspension, and facing a favourable run of fixtures (AVL, whm, LIV, sto, NOR, tot), we may start to see the best of the Chelsea striker. Available at 10.9 in FPL, the former Atletico frontman could be worth taking a chance on, given he has an ownership of just 5.5%, for those looking to make up lost ground in mini-leagues.

Although Liverpool are bottom of our Season Ticker for the next six Gameweeks (tot, SOT, che, CPL, mci, SWA), Daniel Sturridge sneaks into the final place on our ladder in the hope that Jurgen Klopp’s arrival will provide some fresh impetus at Anfield. The 10.5-priced forward has managed an impressive 10 goal attempts in just 251 minutes of pitch time this season, and providing the new boss hands Sturridge the lone striker role, he could yet defy the tough schedule and reward his 4% ownership over the coming weeks.

To WC or not sigh :sigh: ...would appreciate some advise 🙂

    butland - ruddy*
Azpi* jevans* huth* kolorav* --- Francis
mane mahrez sanchez payet -- fletch*
    Martial deeney --- kun*

    Factors for WC:
    - have already taken a 4 point hit (sterling/hazard >> payet/sanchez)
    - will take another hit to get rid of kun...so WC will save 8 points
    - will be changing most of my backline esp if jevans/kolorav are ruled out
    - wont change my mid with the exception of fletcher
    - despite the enigma deeney has been...been holding hoping a few goals from him will help me recoup the 0.3 i have lost on him..besides 5.2 is a good price for a bench cheapie

    Factors against WC:
    - if jevans/kolorav are fit then i can get an 11 out
    - Assuming jevans/kolorav fit, an 8 point hit is not worth justifying a WC imo
    - after i remove kun for pelle..i will be happy with 4 of my mids and pelle and martial

I think you should do it. When you pick your team keep Everton (Jagielka, Barkley, Lukaku) and Southampton (Cedric, Bertrand, Mané, Pellé) in mind considering their fixtures in a couple weeks. You could also include United (Mata) for the same reason.

I'd change all the starred ones and maybe Payet/Mahrez/Richards with a WC.

Saylor is pretty useless and injured.
Might be stuck with 2 defenders so perhaps a hit and hope Sterling does well or bite the bullet and take a -8 or WC.

I shouldn't ever need Saylor, I'll probably even swap him for a 3.9er.

My instinct is to play the WC, so I think I may as well go for it.

Depends on how many good guys you can field in gw9. I have my WC, and am going to go minus 8 instead. I would so love to use it, but think it's more prudent to use it in gw11 or gw13. If you have a strong team with say, a minus 4 or 8, then hold the WC. If you need to go -16 to get a good team out there, then consider using your WC.

      1. CABAYE4
        • 12 Years

If I didn't WC I'd probably settle for Aguero and Ivan out in a (-4) for a reasonable side.

I'm just not sure I'll get a better opportunity to play it tbh.

I don't think you have to worry about missing your window of WC opportunity. Use if if you NEED it or when you think you can really capitalize on major points swings between your current and future team. For example, gw11 has is a bit of a fixture turnover, and gw13 is yet another international break with fresh injuries galore!

Considering most are taking -8's you get a 8 point advantage on most by using a WC.. and then you get a better team to boot for the foreseeable.. cant see much going wrong really. you just got to be a little smart about your picks 🙂

      Pelle, Costa or Lukaku.

I see a lot of people talking Costa, myself included, here's my take him on him as a pick -

He's had three weeks full training, no international break, it looks like he's in better shape than a month or two ago, he's a huge differential in a bunch of strikers that aren't exactly exciting picks themselves (bar Pelle/Vardy whom I have), he's got great fixtures, Villa at home his first game back, Villa ranking 2nd in chances conceded centrally 3rd from the left, 2nd in errors leading to a chance, joint 3rd in goals conceded, etc, btw. It's the game for us to properly kick on and for Costa to make a point.

I'm not saying he's a brilliant pick because he's far from it but if you do have Pelle/Vardy like myself, he's the one striker in my eyes bar Aguero that only needs one chance to stick it in the net. There's also his YC's/hardly any BPTS, but the BPTS never stopped anyone jumping on Gomis at the start. (can easily argue the difference in values yes)

I guess it just goes down to how punty you're feeling and whether you'd spend the remaining funds elsewhere.

I think Costa v Villa is a very exciting prospect, especially given he's something like 3% ownership. (if you remove dead teams)

I'd love to go Costa as the ideal replacement for Aguero, but some niggly feeling at the back of my head is telling me to go Hazard. And then if I do my whole team will be completely unbalanced.

Agree, but with his teammates' form...Two weeks ago I have chosen Hazard over Sanchez and I regret this decision as hell (not that much, still in 10k), so I won't trust and Chelsea player until they will live up to their class and form.

Good points. I have Pellé and Vardy as well but I'm eyeing up Lukaku for that 3rd spot from GW11. He has start scoring at some point but will he be better value for money than the alternatives?

I disagree that he's clinical i.e. needs one chance to stick in the back of net. I don't regard him to be more skilled than other strikers in the Prem, although, i would say he is in top 3 strikers in the premiership for his movement, which is sublime.

he's box office for his antics, hope he stays in the Premiership!

His form this season is due to wanting a move away from Chelsea, he feels he gets unfair treatment from fans and press in this country. His head is just quite not in it this season for these reasons.

Punty being the optimum word. With Costa you're guessing when Chelsea's form will return rather than waiting for it to happen. The sensible thing to do is not get him. I'm not very sensible though so I might 🙂

Indeed, but like I say, there's not that many attractive options out there especially if you have Pelle/Vardy. Say Chelsea beat Villa 5-0 on Saturday, are we back? Nobody knows, I'd much rather take a punt on Villa (H), WHU (a) then re-assess.

One problem with bringing in a player for 2 games is they can end up sticking around for longer especially when they've got good fixtures. Although a premium forward not firing would be the first to go I grant you.

nah, the leader still has 3 more players than me today, infact most up top still have Perisic/Kalinic and De Bruyne left so I'll probably drop heavily today.

And it will be hard to catch up in play offs, won't be many goals scored there.

He is, but might as well wait for the confirmation (4 weeks at least).
No, can't see any reason. Even if he starts his barren spell like last season, he is one of the few firing options around.

I imagine there's a lot of people waiting until the final whistle tonight to bring Pelle in for Aguero as 0.1 differential tonight could become 0.2 by Saturday morning, more if Pelle rises again. I've had Aguero since £13.0 so any drop won't affect me for now, but the Pelle situation will if he goes up and I expect that after the rise tonight, he may again as thoughts turn to the weekend.

It's annoying that Wilson, Aguero injuries in recent weeks are forcing moves we wouldn't otherwise make, with the plethora of defenders requiring addressing either as a result of injury (me), risk of rotation or underperforming. I wonder how many more of us would have addressed the Targett issue by now otherwise.

Glad to see Kompany back in the frame, let's hope he is back strong and ready for the weekend!

    Krul*, McCarthy

    Kompany*, Azpi, Evans*, Francis, Targett

    Mahrez, Payet, Ayew*, Toure*, Sanchez

    Diouf*, Aguero*, Vardy

Have no WC and 1FT. Krul and Aguero are going to be shifted.

Any other thoughts before the press conferences? Diouf is a particular concern. If Toure remains injured it might make a hit for KDB an easier choice. If Toure and Diouf are both fit then I will be relying on my entire attack's form continuing.

And it's not worth taking hits on playing players now is it?

This comment is good enough for me. I have Kun Silva injured and want to switch Wanyama to Mane with the Kun-money. Only if Silva is confirmed out for maximum 2 weeks, though. If Silva out for longer then he goes out for Mane. Wanyama will be dealt with later.
I might even hold Kun to the next week, want to avoid unnecessary hits as I will use Kun replacement from GW10 onwards only.

I think he got one goal last year from the bench in the 8-0 game.
Hardly justifies preventing you getting mane

To be fair he had a good start to last season for a 4.5 mid, scored 3 goals in his first 8 games I think. Just luck though really.

Is there any difference in his potential when Davis starts. He seems to get forward a lot more nowadays

                        it's possible, I haven't looked into it.

for me, I'm not certain I really want 3 Southampton (though it is tempting) and so besides that, Wanyama is undoubtedly the best 5th mid in a 343

wanyama is being currently outscored by 29 midfielders priced at 5.3 and under

Basically, Doosra's early Agüero transfer backfired and he's been forced to field Wanyama as a result. Hence the sudden posts of him being a great option. 😀 He's fairly predictable.

Proves I'm bang on the money infact, doesn't it? 🙂 Prior to Kun's injury you had Wanyama third on the bench, and I highly doubt you were talking him up at that time either. You've been forced to field him now (unless you took a hit), hence the sudden optimism. What exactly do you disagree with here?

For the record I'd be fine with Wanyama as a cheapie myself. I don't think he's a bad pick at all, I'm just stating facts.

I agree. My starting line-up included Schmeichel, Morgan and King from LEI and it's been a b@st@rd to plan around.

Is it a bit overkill to have Sakho and Payet as well as going for Mane and Pelle?

I currently have Mane and I am considering Pelle or Costa

Sakho and Payet a bit. Mane and Pelle no, but definitely Pelle over Costa or Sakho if you can afford it.

Check the season ticker. Their three fixtures after that are great. Worth a double up.

You'll need to get rid of Sakho or Payet soon, I'm in a similar position. Definitely get Pelle though if you haven't got him. After tonight's game of course!

As I have Pelle already, here's my shortlist:

    A. Vardy - form and fixtures, but worth doubling up Leicester?
    B. Lukaku - terrible next two, better to pick later...or right away ?
    C. Gomis - now have a look at those great fixtures...but can he find form ?

    Your pick? Thanks.

My own view of team balance, by which I mean a mix of players in each position, is that it's mostly nonsense. If it breaks the rule of picking the best players, it's a bad idea.

Mane has potential for more points but Pelle is safer to be involved with either goals or assists. Pelle plays furthest centrally, he is my captain this week FWIW.

      It's simple, mane over Pelle.
Mane's pace will be very effective on counter attacks against a very attacking Leicester side, besides he almost plays next to Pelle and since he is a mid a goal or two automatically puts you well above the rest. If Southampton score, it's either mane or through mane.
