The Digest – Gameweek 12

Romelu Lukaku’s ascent up the Fantasy standings brings the Everton forward onto many a radar ahead of some kind upcoming matches. Palace find their form at Anfield, whilst Sergio Aguero’s imminent return is set to have a major say in our winter planning.

The Player

There was almost an air of inevitability about Romelu Lukaku’s leveler at Upton Park last Saturday.

The Everton striker does, after all, love playing against the Hammers. Lukaku had netted six times in as many matches against the London outfit prior to the weekend and delivered the goods yet again, bagging a goal and two bonus points to climb to second in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward standings.

Encouragingly for Roberto Martinez and Fantasy managers alike, the Belgian international seems to have developed some consistency to his top-flight displays in recent outings. Lukaku produced points in just two of his first six matches but has since blanked just twice in the subsequent six – only United and Arsenal have kept him at bay.

Already, he’s closing in fast on the previous year’s attacking returns. Lukaku has scored seven times – only three less than 2014/15 – whilst his tally of four assists is edging towards last term’s six.

One look at the next seven Gameweeks (AVL, bou, CPL, nor, LEI, new, STO) underlines just why he’s the most sought-after striker in FPL this week. Over 67,000 managers have acquired Lukaku’s services since that Upton Park strike and with his confidence on the up, the Belgian’s perfect blend of form and fixtures is looking hard to resist.

The Team

A 2-1 win at Anfield on Sunday brought Jurgen Klopp back down to earth as Palace chalked up a third straight victory against a resurgent Liverpool outfit.

Ahead of back-to-back home matches against Sunderland and Newcastle, Alan Pardew’s side served a timely reminder of their options at both ends of the pitch.

The 4.0-priced Wayne Hennessey continues to look secure between the sticks and with Joel Ward benched for the Anfield clash, Scott Dann showed just why he’s the priciest defender at Selhurst Park. The centre-half bagged a second goal of the season to climb to fifth in the defender standings – only Aleksandar Kolarov has earned more bonus points (11 to nine) at the back than the 5.1-priced Eagles centre-half.

Yannick Bolasie’s second goal in the last five also brings him back onto our radars. Handed a role up top against the Reds, the DR Congo international’s appeal is boosted by the fact that Yohan Cabaye and Wilfried Zaha are teetering on the Suspension Tightrope, with four yellow cards apiece.

Connor Wickham’s return off the bench also bodes well for Palace’s attacking midfield three, with the former Sunderland man offering a real physical focal point up front. There’s no doubt that the Eagles have toiled without Wickham’s presence in the final third – they won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in his last start and had scored just four times in seven matches prior to their weekend win.

If Sunday’s showing is anything to go by, then, it seems that the Eagles are starting to finally return to form in time to take advantage of a kind upcoming schedule which also hands them clashes against the likes of Everton, Stoke and Bournemouth in the next six rounds of fixtures.

The Talking Point

After seeing his side fail to find a way past Villa last Sunday, Manuel Pellegrini sent Fantasy managers’ plans into overdrive by revealing that Sergio Aguero could be in line for a Gameweek 13 return against Liverpool.

Only yesterday, the Argentine’s tweet on his recovery from a hamstring injury afforded further reason for optimism as we prepare to welcome him back into the fray.

Since Aguero limped out of action in the previous international break, most of us have restructured our squads and used the money to strengthen our attacks. Plenty have opted for eight strong options in midfield and up front, leaving us weekly headaches when it comes to decide who to bench. Aguero’s return could change all that as we look for ways to free up cash to acquire his services.

Yesterday’s confirmation that Dimitri Payet will be sidelined for around three months will be seen by many as the first step in restructuring, with the likes of Manuel Lanzini and Gerard Deulofeu offering cut-price alternatives to the Hammers playmaker. Furthermore, Mesut Ozil – at 8.8 – is challenging the 11.6-priced Alexis Sanchez as our go-to Arsenal option, having delivered points in eight of his 11 appearances. In a season where the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo all offer exceptional value for money, finding a route back to Aguero shouldn’t be too difficult.

The question for most, though, is when to make the move? Much could depend on the City situation. Given that Wilfried Bony limped off on 24 minutes at Villa Park, the league leaders currently boast youngster Kelechi Iheanacho as their only fully-fit striker. If Bony is ruled out for any length of time, Pellegrini will certainly be tempted to call upon Aguero quicker than he previously anticipated as he looks to reignite his side’s title bid.

In saying that, there’s no doubt that Pellegrini will court caution with his star striker’s fitness and it’s unlikely Aguero will be afforded 90-minute run outs on his immediate return.

Having signed off for domestic duties with a five-goal haul against Newcastle in just 64 minutes back in Gameweek 8, though, Aguero’s explosive potential looms large. Down in price to 13.0, owned by just 10% of FPL managers, he now has four home matches in the next six. If he’s passed fit for the Liverpool encounter, dare we go without him?

So what are your moves? Do you think you need another GK in the short term?

Sanchez has WBA, Sunderland, Norwich & Villa in his next 4. Can't be getting rid of him surely?

One of those few mids that can get 2 goals in a game, nevermind just score once. Virtually a must have for me.

    1. Saniul
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 5 months ago

2? No one would be surprised if he could 3 against Sunderland, Norwich or Villa. Must have for me, another reason why I am reluctant to double up and get Ozil.

      1. Irish Madridista ⭐
        • 13 Years
        8 years, 5 months ago

If Sanchez is gonna be getting a hattrick, Ozil is going to be assisting him, ideal double up material.

  9. Saniul
    • 11 Years
    8 years, 5 months ago

Well, for all of the people picking Ozil and I'd say he is a good choice, the only reason I am not going with him is his absolute reluctance to score. I've seen him pass the ball on so many occasions from one-on-one situations. You cannot get two assists every game, which means his average ceiling is around 6-7 points.

I know Chelsea are down and out, but those fixtures look pretty enough for a Willian punt. Or maybe even go shorter term, and get Bolasie...

    1. Pochecinno
      • 8 Years

No one says Ozil is captaincy material but he will give consistent returns

      1. Saniul

        8 years, 5 months ago

But if he is not assisting in a game (maybe when Giroud wants to be a donkey), the chance of him getting a goal is almost nil. That's a factor.

You just have to look at last two seasons, you'll realise he's not that consistent returns guy as people think he is.

        1. Pochecinno
          • 8 Years
          8 years, 5 months ago

He's showing consistency. People including Wenger have made excuses for his first 2 seasons and I think this season he is genuinely a different player. And he doesn't really on Giroud to score, he can play a magical ball into almost anyone

But Arsenal have a great attack, they score a lot especially without the Donkey. If Arsenal completely lose form, then its best to sell ozil, but until then he's a great pick

I don't mean in terms of the sheer number of assists he got in his Madrid days, I mean his actual form and playing ability.

As a singularity, he is returning to his best form and beginning to find his place within the English game, which he hasn't done for the first 2 years (or at least was very inconsistent) but now everything is going through him due to the smart positions he picks up.

G2G? (please disregard Payet for the time being as I was benching him anyway)

    Hennessey

    Bertrand - Coleman - Dier

    Alexis - Mahrez - Mane - KDB

    Vardy - Pelle - Kane

    .
    Subs: Elliot; Gabriel, Simpson, Payet(i)

Bearing in mind the cash needed for Aguero, who is everyone getting in for Payet?

Nope, but I'm expecting him to come more into the fold now under Klopp than he was under Rodgers.

2 assists in 2 starts, and he was Hoffenheim's Kevin DeBruyne last year...

Haha go on so, get Lanzini, Mané, Bolasie, Willian and Wijnaldum in and see how well that goes.. Or better yet, get Barkley 😉

ighalo, kdb, dawson to Lukaku, Coutinho, Square

Worth it or not? pretty much only way to get lukaku in.

could also do smalling to rojo which would allow to do kdb to sterling instead if that looked better. Thoughts ? Worth it or hold?

think its worth it over what i already have though? planning to do pelle to kun, and have vardy and ighalo. Can't decide if i should shape my team around getting lukaku back. Migh give kdb 1 or 2 more games and then decide his fate.

On a WC, but also prepping for getting in Kun for GW14. How does this look?

    DDG, Hennessey
    Bellerin, Rojo, Dann, Moreno, Bennett
    KDB, Ozil, Sterling, Tadic, Mahrez
    Kane, Vardy, Lukaku

Then in 2 weeks do Sterling->Lanzini and Vardy->Kun.

If you're WCing I'd bring him in straight away. It's wasted transfers down the line

Payet's demise and the return of the prodigal Kun have tempted me into drastic action over a couple of -4s over 2 GWs

    Payet - Mane - KDB - Pelle > YYT - Tadic - Coutinho - Aguero

    Worth doing?

    Butland - Myhill
    Dawson - Dier - VVD - Janmaat - Rojo
    Sanchez - Drinkwater - * - * - *
    Lukaku - Vardy - *

I'd try and hold Vardy 1-2 more weeks. Same with KDB until you see how he plays with Kun, SIlva AND Sterling on the pitch together.

Sanchez is too inconsistent for me to own right now. I'll live with his big hauls once in a while and make up the points over the curse of the year.

Aguero: anyone waiting for 3-4 gw to bring him in?

its a lot of tinkering to teams to make him fit within the next 2 gwks imo.
think he will not start ag Liv.
then following gw hell prob play less than 60 min. yes he can hav a hatty in 45. but still.
the fixtures are not the best. altho he is fixture proof.
think best to adjust to ring him in around the 4th gw from here on out
