FIFFSA 5-a-side World Cup – Qualifying Week 2

The first week of qualifying inthe inaugeral FIFFSA 5-a-side World Cup got off to a flyer with several results of note. Egypt, one of the least experienced teams, came through the first week with flying colours, posting the fifth highest score of any team (333) and they are now sitting pretty at the top of the CAF qualifying group. This sets up a tantalising clash with The Seychelles.

The highest team score of the week award goes to Costa Rica with 351. They needed it too as their opponents Malaysia posted a very respectable 321. This would have been enough to have beaten most sides last week.

The average score for teams last week was 304.8. If your team scored more than that that you can consider yourselves unlucky if you lost – or extremely lucky if you squeezed out a win with a score lower than that.

Player of the week goes to Cylus11 of Croatia who posted a mammoth 92 points, as he led them to a 79-point victory over France

The award for worst substitution must go to Uruguay who benched Chenku who scored a massive 78 points after hits. This cost Uruguay the win in a tight match-up. This narrowly beat the benching of Jacknap by India as although they benched a greater number of points India still came away with the win.

Off the pitch, Tony Hibbert wins the award for best press conference revealing the Republic of Ireland’s elite pre-season training methods that would set them up for the tournament.

We also had the saga of the missing England players gone AWOL. If you are reading this and you belong to team England please make yourself known.

In fact the sheer quantity and quality of the pressers is too high to bring up here. But keep it up it is an invaluable part of the tournament and keeps it alive.

A full run-down of last week’s results can be found here:

Gameweek 2 Preview

We are looking forward to the second week of qualifying taking place this weekend, which includes a big South American match-up between Brazil and Argentina. Both sides which have tallied over 145,000 points between them in their Fantasy Premier League careers so it should live up to its billing.

Another big local derby is Germany against Poland, who will be desperate to get off the mark after losing their Gameweek 1 match against Portugal. Germany in contrast will be in confident mood after despatching Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A full list of the fixtures this week can be found here:

Fixtures FIFFSA

A more detailed summary of this can be found on the player history tab which includes the rank history of every player in the tournament and our team sheets and tables spreadsheet.

Further Information

A quick reminder of the format. Each Gameweek teams will pick a team of five players to go head to head with their opposite nation. The match will then be decided by the aggregate score of each team’s Gameweek scores after hits have been accounted for. This week’s games can be found here.

Captains are required to submit their team sheets to fiffsa.exec@gmail.com by 2300 (GMT) by the Friday of each Gameweek otherwise their sixth player will be automatically benched.

Live scorecards will be up shortly before the early kick-off on Saturday at our score centre spreadsheet.

If you have any further queries, feel free to ask below in the comments or email us at: fiffsa.exec@gmail.com

From my beach hut I could see the anchored "Wing Wong Winehouse" gently swaying on a crystal pearl blue sea surrounded by some of the most beautiful islands on planet Earth. In this huge expanse of French Polynesia covering some two million square miles and a hundred and eighteen islands, team North Korea were guests on the most prestigious__ Tahiti.

Transporting breadfruits, to support the slave plantations in the Caribbean, the crew of "The Bounty" had committed mutiny here after succumbing to the charms of this paradise on Earth. I knew I had to keep a close eye on my fellow team mates, already softening under the hospitality and charm of such a friendly people.

I remind all team members we are here to sink this island.

AND SINK THIS ISLAND WE WILL.

The pre game schnitzel and sauerkraut was being cooked by the team's highly trained and specially selected Chef flown in from the Munich beer halls. Tankards of Erdinger and Lowenbrau were being swilled by back room staff. But deep in the recesses of the team's hotel King Ozil Beckenbauer was going over last minute tactics.

Skipdipper Matthaus the midfield general protested "But King, ze Polish will crumble under our might, zis will be, how those English swine say, a walk in ze park"

King Ozil Beckenbauer took a sharp intake of breath. Rukawa Lahm and Zombieeaten Schmidt visibly shrunk back in their seats as King reached forward and slapped Skidipper Matthaus

"We Germans never compare ourselves to ze English and their complacent ways. Now, ze key to victory is..."

The team slumped back in ther chairs. As the pre dinner beetroot and carrot drinks arrived...
The team would be ready. King Ozil would make sure of that! Beware Poland...

'Captain, captain, where are you?' A voice yelled out in the darkness.

'Yes!' Two voices bellowed back. Two voices? we are but one team Wachu thought, how could there be two answers?

'Captain, I can't find you, I'm scared of the dark, where are you?' P-Daddy almost mewed with fear. No answer, where could his captain be? The mighty Ziro was unusually silent. Then as if it was from a divine source a click could be heard in the silence, followed almost simultaneously by the once dark room being filled with a bright, blinking light. Just like the movement of a well versed dance troupe all eyes seem to squint at once while they adjusted, pupils dilating accordingly.

Ziro scanned the room, pride filling up inside him as he surveyed his team, yes all his. He may have a team member awkwardly calling himself a captain but there was no mistaking this was his team, and a team to be proud of. He knew that people may not be noticing his band of brave warriors yet, but they soon would be. Last week they had bravely dispatched Columbia to start their qualifying campaign of with a resounding win. This week would be much more difficult. He knew he could not show fear, he could not show doubt just as he knew his team would qualify with ease and seriously challenge in the upcoming FIFFSA World Cup.

‘Men’, Ziro quietly yet forcefully barked at the group. ‘What we are about to face is much more difficult of a task, but not one we should shirk from. We will beat Uruguay, and we will send a message out to the watching world that we are not a force to be reckoned with, we are the force to be reckoned with.’ His men looked at him in awe, how proud they were to have such a leader, how eager they were to write their names in history.

Wait, what was that noise? Was that? No it couldn’t be, yes it could. The slow steady sound of a pair of clapping hands from the shadows in the corner, getting louder as it approached the light. All eyes turned, had they been caught, if so why have they not been met with aggression, why not retribution?

A pair of hands appeared from the darkness into the light, followed by the rest of the mysterious source of the sound. Team Ecuador knew who it was immediately, it was the charismatic leader of their soon to be opponents, Chenku from Team Uruguay.

‘Friends’, he said with a smile as he stopped his applause. ‘I understand why you have broken into our tactics room, for if I was you, I too would fear the mighty Uruguay and would want every advantage I could get’.

He paused, surveying the team in front of him. To be so close to the legendary Ziro, and his team, every single one of them down to the last man a player any leader would want to follow him into battle. His eyes stopped, focusing on P-Daddy, the youngest of the group. He could see a solitary tear trickling down the cheek of the youngest member of the team, and he felt pity.

‘Fear not, for I do not seek revenge, I will not look to enact an equal or greater misdemeanour on you.’ He said with a hint of warmth whilst focusing on P-Daddy in an effort to assure him he was safe. ‘You have not gained an advantage, yet’, ‘I give you two options. You can either walk out of here, go home and get some rest ahead of what will be an epic battle on the hallowed turf of Team Uruguay this Saturday, know that whatever the outcome, the winners will be both deserving and worthy winners’

He let an uneasy pause develop whilst his opponents let that option sink in. ‘OR’ He suddenly bellowed, ‘You can over power me and get what you came for’ Pointing at the filing cabinet that held his team’s tactics for the upcoming match.

All of the Ecuadorians instantly looked to their leader, Ziro, for his actions. Ziro raised an eye brow, strode purposely over to his illustrious opponent and raised his hand in friendship. ‘Forgive me, friend. I let emotions get the better of both myself and my team. We mean you no harm for you truly are the epitome of the legend that is Uruguay. For you are fair when many would just seek short term satisfaction from our momentary lapse of concentration.’

‘We will face you this weekend with our heads held high’, Ziro stated, ‘With both the victors and losers knowing they should still qualify for a coveted place in the FIFFSA World Cup’

With that Ziro walked away, leading his team out of the training camp of his opponents knowing he had not done a Hibbert and stooped to the depths of cheating, that his opponent had truly been fair and let him keep his dignity and self-esteem.

So here in is the tale of when two iconic captains, met and kept the dignity of their nations nd the sport alive knowing full well that once the whistle blew this weekend, there would be no prisoners. May the best team win.

    GO TEAM URUGUAY!!!!

The tide ebbed and flowed over golden sands as four members of the Seychelles team walked barefoot, looking like the world's handsomest boy band, along the beach. But our song was one of lament.

    "Badger," we called, "Badger."

But neither the furry little tyke nor Wilson, his beloved cricket ball friend who kept him company on all those lost months at sea, were responding.

The week after our dramatic Leicester-like comeback against the Ivory Coast had started with a detour. On the way home we had flown back via Egypt to visit an FPL mystic who we thought might know the secret to unlocking Team Egypt’s unusual ability to generate high scores from unlikely sources. The mystic had taken us to a warehouse where we were given a large stone obelisk that only just fit in Jawain’s presidential aircraft.

After our return to our islands in the sun, we had spent several days researching the ancient hieroglyphics in the hope of unlocking the secret. Finally, 36 hours later, Balders and I reached a break through.

“Look at this text here,” I said. “We’ve had this all wrong. This isn’t an obelisk, this is an Özilisk.”

    “A what?”

“An Özilisk. I thought the mystic said she was giving us great assistance, but what she actually said was she was giving us the great assister!”

“Ah!” said Balders and I could see a mental lightbulb go off. His fingers traced over the ancient carvings.

“Yes, yes,” he said. “It all makes sense now. It’s actually a bit of both. It is great assistance and the great assister. I need to…”

He trailed off, looked around, then turned back to me. “Keep working on this, I need to make some inquiries. Badger, will you help me?”

Badger nodded, grabbed Wilson, and they rushed out of the room.

I didn’t see them again that day. The next morning Blue Lion and I were doing some warm up exercises ahead of team practice when Cheeseoid came rushing in all flustered and gasping for breath.

    “Badger,” he said. “Gone. Badger.”

    “Gone where?”

“That’s just it, I don’t know. I went down to Badger’s cave and it was deserted. I don’t think he was there at all last night.”

And that’s how we came to find ourselves now wandering along the beach. We had searched the golf club, searched the cave, the practice facility and Jawain’s presidential palace and our only success was to discover we couldn’t find Balders either.

About a mile beyond Badger’s cave the beach turned a corner and a jetty jutted jauntily out into the sea. Beside the jetty lay a body.

We rushed over. It was Balders.

He had a giant bruise on his jaw but he stirred when we shook him. Blue Lion scooped up a handful of sea water and threw it over Balders, who started spluttering out words.

    “Badger. Özilisk. Jaws. Assistance. Speedboat.”

He lazily waved a hand in the direction of the jetty. Looking at it I could see a chuck of the board was missing and a frayed rope, which could have been used to moor a boat, was flapping from it into the water.

“We need to get him some medical attention,” said Jawain. “The Egyptian team will arrive in a few hours for the qualifying game and we need him fit to play. It looks like the search for Badger will be longer than expected.”

With that, we hauled Balders on to our shoulders and carried him inland. Badger was missing and we would have to try to finish the match against Egypt quickly so we could resume the search.

The hunt was on and Egypt would be our first victims.

But thanks for all of the effort. It was very interesting. I still maintain the belief that Chelsea are improving with improving stats. Norwich wheras are very poor

You might be right, but I don't trust Sanchez much as I like him as a player. To be honest I was simply making the case for Kane, not running a comparison with other options that may or may not be better. 🙂

    FIFFSA Question.

Trying to access players FPL history via the links on your team spreadsheet page takes me to an FPL error page

"page does not exist"____ on all the links I click ?

Balders is the spreadsheet genius, so don't take my word as gospel, but I think it is because he has linked the pages to the Gameweek 14 history pages so it grabs the scores as they come in. But Gameweek 14 hasn't started yet so the pages don't currently exist. I expect they will once the Gameweek deadline has passed. If not, let us know. In the meantime you should be able to find the teams manually using their team ID number.

Team Tahiti has upped security on the island since the arrival of the North koreans. Beware our friendly smiles - they hide ambitions of power and victory.

Sitting in a corner of Uruguay's dressing room, DJDave can be seen holding a flower.

Aguero, Lukaku, Aguero, Lukaku he mutters as he peels off the petals.

After the shocking Sunday Kaneing last week, team Uruguay need their big man firing. He knows. He's nervous. But he's ready.

The final petal shed, the decision made, he rises to his feet, pulls on the iconic blue jersey, and stalks towards the pitch.

.... only to find two clones made in the secret chambers of the deepest caves of the Andes, together with them on the pitch. They stare at each other agape in disbelief, their minds racing.

The crowd cheers. A bugle blows. Winds whine.

      The whistle blew....

does the spreadsheet open on the fixtures page?

There should be tabs for each group showing the players in the squad. As you say, maybe a tablet/google docs issue.

Is the bench on the score centre for this week or last week? It says IM on bench, but I have sent no mail this week, which the one at number 6 (The Light Knight) should be benched according to the rules.

    Cheers.
