Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 19

Chelsea were without a trio of injured players for yesterday’s trip to United. Everton have worries in the centre of the park, Mousa Dembele is doubtful again for Spurs, whilst West Ham are hopeful on a weekend return for Dimitri Payet. Here’s the latest from yesterday’s matches..

Arsenal
Mathieu Flamini missed the Gunners win over Bournemouth with a minor ankle problem, according to Arsene Wenger. The Arsenal boss also played down Kieran Gibbs’ late withdrawal:

“He [Flamini] might be alright. I could have pushed him but he was a little risk so I decided not to take it because it was an inflamed ankle.”

Aston Villa
Remi Garde was without Jores Okore for the trip to Norwich due to a knee problem:

“His knee was injured. I don’t know how serious. As the game took place very soon after the last one, he had a swollen knee and couldn’t play.”

Chelsea
Gary Cahill missed the trip to United with a foot problem, Guus Hiddink has confirmed, whilst Cesc Fabregas was sidelined due to illness. Loic Remy was unavailable due to a calf complaint.

Crystal Palace
Damien Delaney missed the Eagles’ clash with Swansea after picking up a knock in the weekend draw at Bournemouth.

Everton
James McCarthy returned to action from a groin problem but lasted less than half an hour before suffering a recurrence of the injury. Roberto Martinez has further concerns in the centre of the park after McCarthy’s replacement, Tom Cleverley, was also forced off:

“To lose Tom Cleverley through injury and to get a reaction, a flare up from James McCarthy is a real negative. It was a blow to lose James so early. We felt we needed an extra energy and you saw that with his impact in with the assist for the first goal. Tom then felt his Achilles tendon and we will have to assess it. He tried to stay on as long as he could. He played the pass for Romelu Lukaku for the second goal but he had to come off. He made a really big impact when he came on and he was playing a massive role.”

Newcastle
Steve McClaren was forced to make a last-minute change to his XI for yesterday’s trip to West Brom after Rob Elliot dropped to the bench due to illness. Vurnon Anita was replaced late on after sustaining a hamstring injury, with McClaren fearing the problem is “a bad one”.

Swansea
Federico Fernandez (foot) and Wayne Routledge (knock) were both unavailable for the Swans’ trip to Selhurst Park yesterday.

Tottenham
Mousa Dembele was withdrawn just before the break against Watford yesterday due to a recurrence of his ongoing ankle problem. After the 2-1 win, Mauricio Pochettino went on to say:

“We need to wait and assess him tomorrow. We hope it’s not too bad. Maybe one week, two weeks.”

West Brom
Victor Anichebe was forced off with a hamstring problem late on during the Baggies home win over Newcastle. Jonas Olsson was withdrawn during the first half with a similar complaint, though Tony Pulis remains optimistic on the duo ahead of the weekend derby with Stoke:

“Vic is a top player. He showed that today. They just couldn’t handle him and he did very well. Fingers crossed he and Jonas will be ok for the Stoke game – it’s been suggested that it might just be cramp. Hopefully it won’t be any more.”

West Ham
Nikica Jelavic was sidelined for yesterday’s win over Southampton with a knee injury. Enner Valencia was forced off with a knee problem late on and James Collins picked up an ankle knock but chairman David Gold expects both to make the weekend clash with Liverpool.

In further positive news, Gold says he is “hopeful” that Dimitri Payet could play some part against the Merseysiders this weekend.

As I said before in a different post "VORP" this season has no relevance given the returns of cheap players like Arnautovic, Bojan, Mahrez, Vardy, Deeney, Ighalo

Saying "Ighalo is better value than Lukaku because he costs 3mil less" has no meaning when there is a surplus of cash ITB, and no viable players to reinvest this cash in. Premium players like Hazard, Rooney, Sanchez, Ivanovic, Baines and Aguero are not being picked up due to their lack of returns this season.

I think for FPL to get back to "normal", two things need to happen; these cheaper players need to become far more inconsistent and suffer more blanks in order for the masses to ditch them and look elsewhere. Vardy is starting to see this happen most recently despite blanking for the first time since GW2. He has already dropped in price, despite a home game against Bournemouth up next after City. All we can hope is that Watford dry up to make people spread their forward slot and cash out to different options and make the concept of "VORP" return.

"VORP" can only exist when cash surplus is minimum or non-existent. Only then can we view players in terms of points-per-million, and replacement player value. I think though that the ranks this season have been harder to climb since there is a template team in place that might cost 94-95mil (less depending on when you brought certain players in). With the spare 5-6m in the bank, making a transfer for a bandwagon player couldn't be simpler since cost isn't an issue.

So in short, the premium players need to step their game up, the cheaper players need to blank more. When the concept of "VORP" returns, it will be easier to jump the ranks in my opinion since the risk in investing in more expensive players will smash the template and spread the ownership of players massively. Not to mention when DGWs come around and the 50%+ payers that have kept all three chips should see a significant rank boost if things go to plan (which is unlikely given the way this season has gone)

Hey Bowstring, read your long post about defenders earlier. I was looking at Bournemouth and your penalty stats really swayed it for Daniels. Having said that, would you look at Smith for greater goal threat instead?

DGW's at the end of the season often end in a whimper with few goals while those around GW27 do much better. This is the season of the casual no doubt there.

      In addition to your argument,

I think there is an assumption we all make that is terrible wrong. We correlate price tag with fantasy output, in other words, we expect that the higher priced players are 'better' and should produce more fantasy points. In reality, however, those prices are adjusted purely on past output/performance from previous seasons.

We say Hazard, Sanchez, Aguero are premium players because of their price tag when in reality, they have been far from elite.

Its the price tag that throws us off, and always has.

Happened last year with Kane when it took everyone until XMAS to purchase him after the Chelsea game. It's happened this year with Ighalo.

I have the same plan re. Payet so I'm sticking, since there's no point using 2 transfers on consecutive weeks on Ramsey to random midfielder and then random midfielder to Payet. Too many variables in the meantime could derail the plan.

    Returns Imminent GW20

Tables aren't fully updated with two games left to go, but here's an early look at those due goals/ assists for next gameweek. I'm currently averaging about a 36% striker rate (just over 1 in 3). As always I combine both tables to give an idea of who is due a goal or assist, with some players appearing on both tables. Some strikers will create a lot, and be marked down on the assists imminent table but will have a high number of penalty touches, explaining any goals scored. Likewise for creative players taking many shots with a large number of penalty touches; they may score or assist.

    Goals: http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/12263/
    Assists: http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/12239/

I've found in recent weeks that for both tables, penalty area touches seems to account for a higher chance of a player getting a return (which is fairly common sense). For assists imminent, players with a high number of crosses is also a good indicator just as much as "chances created". Hopefully this helps.

PS. I think #2 and #3 on "goals imminent" are due a big haul in their next game.

What are you predictions of the leicester - man city game?

personally I think man city will hammer them, klopp knew what to do. Leicester's whole plan is to steal the ball and pass up to the forwards asap. I wouldn't like to be in Kante's shoes - tasked to steal the ball from silva, toure, kdb and aguero

    @Pochecinno

    Just saw your question above.

Smith is good if the cash is tight, considering he's only 4.0m, but his position is not safe. Daniels, on average, is far more attacking along the flank, but as I said earlier, clean sheets for Bournemouth will be far and few between so Daniels adds that bit more of flair with his attacking ability and spot kick duties. Only 0.5m in the difference but a worthy investment imo.

I was going to bring him in, but if I did it would mean ditching Simpson (BOU) who I need this week due to my defenders having bad fixtures. Also it would mean I'd have to field Hennessey (CHE) since my other keeper was Begovic. Went with Begovic ---> DDG in the end. May still bring in Daniels next week if Payet isn't in the squad for Liverpool.

My worst transfer this season is probably Ozil to Sanchez in GW8. Reversed it in GW13 though.

Ighalo to Aguero in GW13 is close as well.

Loved Ighalo's goal yesterday, phenomenal mixture of strength and skill as always. If the best defensive side in the league (imo) can't stop him playing with three centre backs, then who can?

Ighalo doesn't need to rely on Watford playing well, he just needs the ball put into the penalty box and he will make something out of nothing!

Lucky to score yesterday. Only 1 shot on target in the entire game.

Agree, though I credit his strength and determination against Dier.

But for a lucky bounce off Dier, he'd have a 1-pointer. Great player though.

I agree as an owner, first time he has over performed

Yeah usually he has around 5 shots on target from the six yard area and comes away with just a single goal

Been lucky on a regular basis. Gigantic deflection against Chelsea, Boruc howler, two West Ham howlers in the same game, loose ball shot into his path at Villa. Never seen someone as fortunate as him.

Brought him in on WC GW 9. Took a 0.4m price drop and eventually sold him 🙁

Might make the Liverpool game, if not don't worry. He has 10 days after it to recover in time for Bournemouth

Would you rather play Ward (CHE) or Williams (manu)?

    Barkley -> Arnie or shaq?

Shaquiri hadn't scored all season until yesterday and Arnie is on pens.

Oh, I didn't know, I thought shaq would be on pens, but Arnie took it as he was not in the game at the time

        Thanks, sort if clears it

had this debate with myself yesterday, and went with Arnautovic.
price changes, cheaper and greater consistency won it for me, both great differentials imo though.

Thinking the same. Barkley might play deeper if they lose 2 mids to injury. But double WBA defense is stopping me atm.

It's time to move on from the template, Barkley doesn't exude confidence away from home & lukaku seems enough cover

I'm currently ranked worse than I have been since FPL began, and my team are almost certain to be relegated this season, possibly with the worst points total in history.

Anyone else have a tale of woe so I can lol @ you instead to make me feel better?
