Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 22

Sergio Aguero’s one-man demolition of Crystal Palace brings Fantasy managers racing to acquire his services. Newcastle’s recent upturn in attacking potential also arrives on our radar, whilst Riyad Mahrez’ stock is on the decline after another miss from the spot sees him stripped of Leicester’s penalty duties.

The Player

A 16-point haul at home to an out-of-sorts Palace, courtesy of two goals, an assist and maximum bonus points, showed why Sergio Aguero remains peerless amongst premium-priced frontmen across the Fantasy games.

In a week where the likes of Harry Kane, Diego Costa and Wayne Rooney all gathered up the points, it was the Argentine’s virtuoso display that has many non-owners reconsidering their stance.

Gradually eased into action by Manuel Pellegrini over the winter period, Aguero welcomed Alan Pardew’s side on the back of two goals and a pair of assists in four matches across all competitions.

That weekend brace means Aguero has scored every 108.1 minutes this season – substantially quicker than any other frontman and not far off last term’s 101.6 minutes, where he netted 26 times.

In a season where only one of the top five scoring FPL midfielders is priced over 7.5, budgetary issues certainly shouldn’t be a concern when freeing up the cash to draft in the Argentine. Also bearing in mind that City’s most popular Fantasy pick Kevin De Bruyne has now scored just once in the last eight Gameweeks, it’s difficult to overlook a fully-fit Aguero as the primary source of attacking points from the Premier League’s most prolific scorers.

Already subject to a price rise since his weekend endeavours, Aguero has been drafted into 80,000+ FPL sides, with his ownership sitting at 20% and rising.

Providing Pellegrini can keep his star striker out of the treatment room from this point onwards, Aguero’s weekend output sounded an ominous warning for those brave enough to still overlook his talents from this point onwards.

The Team

A 2-1 win over West Ham boosted Newcastle’s survival bid as Steve McClaren’s charges finally show some signs of their attacking capabilities.

Having salvaged a 3-3 draw with United in midweek, the Magpies put an end to the Hammers’ eight-match unbeaten run thanks to talisman Georginio Wijnaldum, whose goal and assist took him to third in the midfield standings. Like Aguero, the Dutchman has also been subject to a price hike and at just 6.9, he looks an ideal candidate for our five-man midfields as the Tyneside team step up their efforts in the final third.

Although Wijnaldum’s output has justified the underlying numbers, Aleksandar Mitrovic is bubbling under as a cheap third forward – the Serbian has scored just once in the last six Gameweeks but has registered more efforts inside the box (20) than any other striker.

Indeed, over the last two Gameweeks, Newcastle have produced 23 shots inside the box – a tally bettered only by Spurs and City, with 24 apiece, whilst in terms of efforts on target, they sit at the summit with Tottenham on 16.

Further back, Daryl Janmaat’s assist against the Hammers arrived on the back of Paul Dummett’s last-gasp leveler against United on Tuesday evening, as McClaren’s full-backs start to benefit from a more offensive style of play.

With new boy Jonjo Shelvey pulling the strings in central midfield, there’s a growing sense of optimism that the St James’ Park outfit now have the confidence to stave off the threat of relegation. Upcoming clashes against Watford, Everton and West Brom offer a platform to maintain their momentum and play their way into our Fantasy plans.

The Talking Point

A second unsuccessful spot-kick in the last three Gameweeks by Riyad Mahrez has Fantasy owners considering their options as Leicester’s toils in attack continue.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Villa means that the Foxes have scored just twice in the last five Gameweeks, with Mahrez drawing blanks on each occasion. Given that Jamie Vardy has scored once in eight league outings, the Algerian’s ability to earn assists has also taken a real turn for the worse – indeed, he has created just one goal in nine Gameweeks.

Frustratingly, if Mahrez had tucked away his penalties, there’d be no issue of concern and we’d be revelling in his essential status. Instead – as confirmed by Claudio Ranieri yesterday – we’re now faced with a situation where the most popular player in the FPL game has been stripped of spot-kick duties in light of his recent failings.

Still sitting in over 65% of FPL teams, Mahrez’ winter malaise isn’t quite on a par with Eden Hazard’s fall from Fantasy grace, though the removal of penalties clearly dents his appeal, given that four of his 13 goals have arrived from the spot. Conversely, Vardy owners will be hoping his record of three successful spot-kicks in the top flight this term can bolster his own flagging campaign.

One look at the fixture list suggests the upcoming period could be a defining one in Mahrez’ season. The Foxes are set to face Stoke and Liverpool at the King Power before making their way to City and Arsenal – that’s three of the league’s top five defences in the next four Gameweeks.

Whilst we’re not writing off a player who has served up nine double-figure hauls in 21 appearances, there’s no doubt that his downturn in output needs to be monitored. Should Mahrez’ early-season form fail to resurface over those next few matches, many may well be looking elsewhere as the competition for our five-man midfields intensifies over the run-in.

    Approx 5% of the top 2k (100/2000) are from the registered community here.
    You'd think it would be a little higher than that?

      This place really isn't all that though... before this last gameweek I asked the question:

      "Igahlo + 4 or Aguero (c)?"

      Every single reply was Ighalo +4...

      Thankfully, I decided to go with my head, did Ighalo to Aguero (-4) and captained him.

            You are off target. Most people, like yourself, come on asking questions in hopes that their initial plan will be supported. When it's not, most of them, like you, disregard the input and implement their plan anyway. This sais nothing about FFS but alot about human nature/psychology.

        many people last week were doubting aguero based on things such as bad scoring record against palace and palace early season form.

          I went Aguero early on but I came on here last Sat am and was nearly swayed to Kane which was logical too and paid off as well, it's a tough and unforgiving game at times and margins are fine-look at all the cs Kolarov lost just before the threshold.

          i think i fully understand, if you are looking at tables of data and arriving at your own conclusion then there is no right and wrong.

          however people don't just look at data.

          There are some who are opinion formers and those who are followers. The views from the 'experts' will proliferate and shape others which will become the consensus among the community. I respect the community, but unfortunately i believe it has been a difficult season to predict hence the usual insights have not paid off.

          I'm not dissing the community at all, just saying its been a difficult season

          Most seasons what you get from here is like gold dust.

    A little pep talk for you all.

    I beat my rival 63-36 at long last this week. His lead is now down to 143. My (Kun(c) Kane Vardy)front line hugely outscored his (Ighalo Lukaku Vardy). I would have annihilated him but for Cech's heroics, and I had Sterling rested. He captained Mahrez, so even though I have him too, his miss helped me greatly. A strange feeling being glad a player of yours misses a pen?!

    Everything I've tried has not come off until now. I punted on Theo(c) captain over Xmas with Soton away and Bournemouth at home but it didn't work out. I was sure that would bridge the gap. So I studied the fixtures and form, and took the gamble of selling Lukaku for his two tough away fixtures and got Kun in early. I couldn't decide who to sacrifice out of Sterling, Kane or Walcott, so kept all three and downgraded Myhill who was on borrowed time anyway, to Hennesey, and Lukaku>Kun. The first week I actually came out 2 points up on the deal as Myhill scored 0, but unfortunately no Kun goal. At least Luka didn't punish me...

    It had to be coming though, so this week the temptations of Kane were resisted and Kun took the armband. Bang 16 points, plus 10 off Kane, and we were up and running. I expect he will think I will captain Aguero again this week. However, I'm not falling into that trap again - have already done Vardy>Lukaku and captained!

    So keep the faith all, keep crunching the numbers, studying the form, and most importantly go with your gut. Sometimes it's too easy to be swayed by opinion, as valuable as it is on here. I've got a long way to go at 1.38m rank, my two worst ever seasons before now are 176k and 88k I think. So a top 100k finish is the realistic target I think now.

    After ten seasons of playing FPL, I simply refuse to let a first season casual beat me! With bench boost and triple captain available to me, hopefully this is the start of my reeling him in little by little each week..!

        If you apply the 'wildcarding the week before DGW and then bench boost' strategy, and load up on DGW players, who knows??

        E.G. Kun(c), playing twice, as we've seen, could be 60+ points from one player. If your rival still doesn't own him,,,bang! Or triple captaining on a DGW week. My rival and others have already discussed how stupid they were on Facebook using all their chips early!

        Big edge still for me for those that have them.

      You are still 143 behind, what's your next steps? with all due respect your rival doesn't seem that difficult competition if his forward line for GW22 was Lukaku, Vardy and Ighalo.

        I'm hoping Ighalo and Vardy have had their day. And Aguero and Kane comfortably outscore them every week.

        I'm also thinking of Kolarov>budget, to allow me Sterling>Sanchez for another potential high scoring differential.

        He's had an unbelievably jammy run. He started the season with five premium defenders and two top keepers FFS!

        He's made no transfers this year, so may be beginning to take his eye off the ball...

    Hi all
    This is my team..
    Rudd - Hennessey
    Ivanovic - Alderwereld - smith - Bennet - Cresswell
    Kdb - Ozil - Payet - mahrez - stanislas
    Aguero - Ighalo - Kane

    I have 2 ft with 0.0 itb.
    I have had OK success in my mini leagues with this team but looking at fixtures I need to be proactive. Yes my keepers aren't the best.
    A. Ozil Ighalo and Ivan -> firmino Lukaku and jagielka/zouma/stones -4
    B. Ozil Ighalo and Ivan -> Barkley giroud and Baines -4
    C. Kdb and Ighalo -> firmino and Lukaku
    D. Kdb and Ighalo -> Barkley and giroud
    E. Other (please suggest)

    Not too keen to let Kdb go but if the others are worth having over the coming fixtures I'm open to it as I need to keep climbing mini leagues
    Thanks

    Best I can come up with is either:

    A) Alli -> Barkley
    B) VDV/Wolly -> Baines
    C) VDV & Alli -> Jags & Barkley
    D) VDV & Alli -> Baines & Mirallas
    E) KDB & Alli -> Sanchez & Barkley

    Bank 2.3m, 2FT

    DDG
    Bellerin, Simpson, Moreno
    KDB, Payet, Mahrez, Alli
    Aguero, Lukaku, Kane

    Hennessey, VVD, Wolly, Surman

      I think myhill has to go. I have the same two keepers and that would definitely what I would do if I had two frees. Adrian and flappyhandski were the ones I am looking at

    Is it too risky to switch from the popular Ozil & KDB to Alexis & Silva ?

    I'm in a position of challenger to league leader and looking for way to climb up.

      I am switching to Silva, think it may be a bit early for Sanchez yet

      I'm considering Kane yet his stats seem very good, but my eyes tell me different

      Ighalo for me - despite their fixtures the last few weeks have shown a real decline in Watford and on Monday they never really went for it, too defensive - think confidence is dipping.
