Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 23

Diego Costa scores again for Chelsea before being subbed off with a knee problem. Spurs have concerns over Jan Vertonghen, Stoke sweat over the availability of skipper Ryan Shawcross, whilst West Ham’s worries at right-back could catapult new boy Sam Byram in the pecking order.

Arsenal
Although there were clear tactical motivations behind Olivier Giroud’s withdrawal in the wake of Per Mertesacker’s dismissal against Chelsea, Arsene Wenger revealed that his decision was made easier due to the fact that the Frenchman was a minor doubt heading into the fixture:

“I think yes, but it was a bit in my mind if he gets injured, with his ankle, he was a doubt, he didn’t practice yesterday and today we declared him fit. It was on my mind. But I had to change a player and. I thought that was the most rational decision with all the factors.”

Having started each of the last 14 Gameweeks, Giroud has looked nailed-on as the Gunners’ lone striker. Yesterday’s withdrawal came at a time when Alexis Sanchez make his long-awaited comeback from injury off the bench, however, and with Theo Walcott offering an alternative up top, the Chilean’s return to Wenger’s starting XI may well see Giroud’s minutes continue to be curtailed.

Aston Villa
Aston Villa are said to be ramping up their search for a new frontman after Rudy Gestede pulled his hamstring as a second-half substitute at The Hawthorns. Gestede has fallen down the pecking order in recent matches, with Remi Garde choosing to start Libor Kozak instead, though with three goals in the last five Gameweeks, Villa are clearly in desperate need of a cutting edge.

Bournemouth
The Cherries winger Junior Stanislas was hauled off in the dying embers at the Stadium of Light due to a knee problem. Post-match, Eddie Howe painted a bleak picture of Stanislas’ prospects:

“He twisted his knee and it doesn’t look good. It looks like maybe a medial ligament strain. You saw him being carried off the pitch and it didn’t look good. He was quite sore in the changing room so we will see how serious it is. It would be a huge blow if he were to be out for any period of time because he has been excellent since he has come into the team. He has had a really good run and again you could see his quality so, hopefully, he is not too serious.”

Priced at just 4.2, Stanislas has started 11 of the last 12 Gameweeks on the flank and proven a very handy option for Fantasy managers. The winger bagged three goals, two assists and five bonus points over that period but a possible stint on the sidelines looks set to deprive us of one of the cheapest starters in the top-flight.

Chelsea
Diego Costa limped off in the 68th minute of the London derby after damaging his knee. The Spain international will now undergo scans, which Gus Hiddink is confident won’t flag up anything serious:

“We’ll see, well make some scans but I don’t think it’s very very serious.”

Costa has thrived under the tutelage of the Blues’ new boss – tallying five goals and two assists in five starts – yet his pockmarked disciplinary and injury records discourage investment at the 10.6 mark. Although the combative hitman could sustain his current purple patch during a favourable batch of upcoming match-ups (wat, MUN, NEW, sou), prospective owners might be unwilling to take that risk when there are a bevy of viable forwards with fewer downsides.

Staying within Chelsea’s locker room, Pedro missed the Arsenal head-to-head due to illness. Worryingly for Eden Hazard’s owners, the Belgian only made the bench despite Pedro’s absence, as Hiddink opted for Cesc Fabregas, Oscar and Willian in the three slots behind Costa.

Everton
Muhamed Besic (hamstring) and Kevin Mirallas (knee) were injured in the first period of Everton’s home clash against Swansea City. Although the Toffees are yet to determine the severity of either problem, Roberto Martinez revealed that both players may well be set for a spell in the treatment room:

“It’s hard to tell [the seriousness of both injuries]. Muhamed Besic injured his left hamstring – the opposite leg to the problem he had recently. We will also assess Kevin Mirallas, who injured the tendon in his right leg around the knee. I don’t expect them to be fit for Wednesday and I expect a bit of a period where they will be unavailable. It is a real shame because both players gave us a really refreshing look and reached good levels at this stage of the season.”

Elsewhere in the Merseysiders camp, Martinez cited the club’s hectic schedule behind his decision to rest Phil Jagielka yesterday:

“We have five games in 13 days. Phil Jagielka has been out for a long, long time and then he came back last week and played three games in seven days. Medically, it was the right thing to give him a bit of recovery time and make sure we used the squad. The squad is ready to cope with players missing and, clearly, Phil Jagielka will be refreshed for what is ahead.”

Leicester City
Shinji Okazaki was subbed off at the 62-minute mark against Stoke City with a knock. After the 3-0 win, Claudio Ranieri played down the Japan international’s fitness:

“Shinji I think is okay, nothing serious. Just a problem behind the knee.”

Liverpool
Earlier today, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp revealed that Nathaniel Clyne is a slight doubt for tomorrow evening’s Capital One Cup clash with Stoke after sustaining a knee problem in the weekend win over Norwich. The fit-again Jon Flanagan is on standby to deputise should Clyne fail to make it. Klopp has also confirmed that Dejan Lovren returned to training yesterday but, after three weeks on the sidelines, remains doubtful for the Potters encounter.

Manchester United
Matteo Darmian was escorted to hospital following a clash of heads with Shane Long during the second half of Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton. The Italian full-back has since taken to social media to assuage fears over his fitness:

“Thank you all for the support. I’m fine. See you soon”

Norwich City
Alexander Tettey was sidelined for Norwich City’s end-to-end encounter against Liverpool because of illness.

Southampton
Addressing the media ahead of Saints’ road tie against Manchester United, Ronald Koeman said that Steven Davis wasn’t fit enough to take part at Old Trafford. Davis’ absence allowed Dusan Tadic a first start in the last three Gameweeks – the Serbian was utilised as a sub in the previous two league matches and has appeared out of favour since Koeman made the successful switch to 3-5-2.

Stoke City
The Potters have been handed a major boost ahead of tomorrow night’s Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool after Marko Arnautovic was passed fit by manager Mark Hughes:

“He trained today. He was fine. He’s still got a little bit of a feeling in the hamstring. It’s been checked and had scans done and there’s no damage. Just a bit of tightness that can originate from other areas. We will make sure he’s primed and ready to go.”

On the downside, Ryan Shawcross has been ruled out for up to four weeks with the back problem that forced him off against Leicester last weekend. In today’s pre-match press conference, Hughes went on to say:

“Thankfully, it’s not a recurrence of his back injury that required surgery. That’s the positive. Unfortunately, the negative is that he’s got soft muscle damage and at the moment it’s looking likely it will be three to four weeks I would think.”

A spell on the sidelines for Shawcross is a significant blow to the Potters’ clean sheet potential. Stoke kept out their opponents just twice in the first 10 Gameweeks without their captain but have racked up seven shut-outs in the subsequent 13 league outings. This could have a knock-on impact on Jack Butland’s potential. The top scoring keeper in FPL, he produced 3.8 points per appearance without Shawcross but this average has risen to 5.4 since the Stoke skipper returned.

Sunderland
Having picked up a knock in training, Jan Kirchhoff was unavailable for selection when the Black Cats hosted Bournemouth.

Tottenham Hotspur
Jan Vertonghen had to be replaced in the 75th minute at Selhurst Park because of a knee injury. Offering an update on the Belgian defender after Spurs’ 3-1 victory, Mauricio Pochettino said that he would be examined on Sunday:

“Jan, we will assess tomorrow. It looks painful but we will assess it tomorrow and see how he is. I don’t want to make any judgement now. We will wait to look at the incident too. He is feeling not so good, his knee also. He didn’t speak to me about the incident yet.”

As of Monday morning, there are reports that suggest Vertonghen is yet to undergo a knee scan. In the event that the former Ajax recruit receives a bad prognosis, we would be forced to reassess Tottenham’s clean-sheet prospects and, subsequently, the appeal of their rearguard assets. In truth, Vertonghen’s stand-in, Kevin Wimmer, is an unknown quantity on these shores, so it remains to be seen whether he can spark up a sturdy relationship with Toby Alderweireld. Indeed, with the two Belgians at the heart of their defence, Spurs have shipped just 18 goals – fewer than any side in the top-flight.

West Ham United
In the process of giving away a penalty, Carl Jenkinson suffered a knock in the opening exchanges against Manchester City. With James Tomkins out of action, new signing Sam Byram (5.0) was afforded his debut at right-back. The ex-Leeds recruit is certainly one to keep tabs on, given that he’s pitched 0.6 below Aaron Cresswell and notched three goals for the Championship club throughout December.

Most of our transfers for the rest of the season are going be spent on getting rid of players with an upcoming blank or loading up on players with an upcoming DGW, here's the schedule:

If there isn't a DGW in GW 25:

GW 24 - GW 27: Get rid of players who have a blank in GW 27

If there is a DGW in GW 25:

GWs 24 - 25: Load up on players who have a DGW in GW 25
GWs 26 - 27: Get rid of players who have a blank in GW 27

GWs 27 - 30: Get rid of players who have a blank in GW 30
GWs 31 - 34: Load up on players who have a DGW in GW 34
GW 35: Get rid of players who have a blank in GW 35
GWs 36 - 37: Load up on players who have a DGW in GW 37

This schedule might not be 100% accurate, if there isn't a DGW in GW 25 they might have to reschedule a match to a random Monday night later in the season so we'd get another DGW in addition to GW 34 and GW 37

    Here's my DGW/blank predictor spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zcb5jGdVitByKQ8R1X4gcEBpiNY9qbLylr72btlTubc/edit#gid=629680924

So when do you think is the best time to use the 2nd wildcard?

By GW31 we will know for sure who has 1dgw or 2 dgws and who has a blank in 35 and who doesn't.

Play gw27-30 around the blanks then WC back to a full strength squad and wing the last 8 transfers of the season.

its just a FT. Myhill has lost his place and is loosing value today too. No point holding onto him?

                  8 years, 3 months ago

FTs are precious, use them wisely. They're more important than team value.

I agree. Do you want me to hold onto Myhill considering my alternative goalie is Hennessey.

Rest of the team seems to be doing okay scoring 72 this GW.

                    Myhill (Hennesey)
                    Alderwield, Bellerin, Daniels (Zouma, Moreno)
                    Alli, Mahrez, Payet, Ozil (Willian)
                    Ighalo, Aguero (c), Kane

                    5.1 mil in bank!

Wait until after the cup games have ridden out, you may get an injury or two that become more pressing concerns. If after the FA Cup games this weekend your team is still all fit then yeah it'd be good to sort out Myhill.

I'm saving both FTs until next Tuesday, the only players I have who might have a DGW in GW 25 are Aguero, KDB and Wollscheid, so if a DGW is confirmed I'll use my FTs to get Everton/Liverpool players.

Identical strategy here. Next mon/tues before I do anything tempting as it is. I am willing to let TV drop a little and appreciate potential DGW targets may rise in price but it ain't all about money at this stage. Look at Simon March last season, he never had a large TV (well he may have a 72 inch sony bravia).

Anyone have more of a sample size for formations? I've scored much better in a 4-4-2, but haven't played it enough to really trust the data. I know this debate comes up before the season starts every year. http://anewpla.net/fpl/

      3-4-3 (18 times - average 52.8 points)
      4-4-2 (2 times - average 66.5 points)
      4-3-3 (2 times - average 56 points)
      4-5-1 (1 times - average 46 points)

If you need/want money for elsewhere than B/C. C for nailedness but B for more CS, IMO. I don't think LEI will keep the CS up tbh.

I am also considering Reid but will have Targett/Simpson as well. Once I get round to 'fixing' my defence.

think we did well to sell sterling, buy firmino and lose out on depay

Think I'd rather play Ayoze with him as Mitrovic can't seem to turn goals imminent into actual goals.

                Hennessey-De Gea
                Ward - Bellerin - Dier - Evans - Cresswell
                Willian/Barkley - Firmino - Alli - Sanchez - Gosling
                Kun - Kane - Ighalo

Seems a good enough WC draft? If I go with Willian, then I'm left with 0.3 itb

Aye guys, what's your view of this?

                Courtois/Hennessey
                Bellerin Toby Moreno Francis Fernandez
                Mahrez Ozil Barkley Alli Payet
                Lukaku Kun Kane

                1FT 0itb
Don't wanna lose more value from Barkley(SV 7.1), so I'm probably selling him tonight but for which one?

                A) Ayew 6.7m
                B) Wijnaldum 7m (possible DGW If Man City eliminate Everton midweek)
                C) Henderson 6.5m (possible DGW too)
                D) Someone else?

FT left. Do you want me to hold onto Myhill considering my alternative goalie is Hennessey.

Rest of the team seems to be doing okay scoring 72 this GW.

                Myhill (Hennesey)
                Alderwield, Bellerin, Daniels (Zouma, Moreno)
                Alli, Mahrez, Payet, Ozil (Willian)
                Ighalo, Aguero (c), Kane

                  your team so your decision.

Firstly, don't do anything until all cup games have been done.

I'd be looking to lose myhill as palace aren't on a good run and would be good to have an alternate. May be wise to pick up a dgw keeper?

Wait for the Capital One Cup and FA Cup ties to be played later this gameweek deadline before making any transfers. Then we will have a clearer picture of what is happening.

I see a lot of happines for probably DGW25.

Just tell me one thing. If City beat Everton at wednesday, and we have 2 doubles in GW 25 that include City, Newcastle, Liverpool and Everton, how you plan to bring all players you wont with the most 3 transfers?
Most of us already have Aguero, KDB, Lukaku, liverpool def.... And if you want, Windjalum, Barkley, Firmino... that's all mids so do you plan to sell all mids you have now???

Pretty much yes I'd probably avoid City due to rotation fears and line up Barkley, Firmino, Wijnaldum, Alli [Mahrez].

I already have KDB... I need to sell Ozil, Payet, Mahrez.... for Wind, Firm and Bark...
Dont mention that we need to get rid of most of them for GW27..

Only Barkley>Wijnaldum and Ozil>Firmino. Already own Kun, Moreno and Lukaku so 5 players for DGW25 is enough for me. Then I have to ship Moreno and 1 of the attackers before blank GW27 to field 11 nailed players, so this is what I'm planing atm..

Is it Worth it doing KDB to Silva if I have 2FT's and nothing else to do?

An inspiring story in the Guardian comments section about Diego Costa, the man off the pitch:
I started following Arsenal in the 70s and I have seen all the ups and downs of this great club. Now my wife and I run an orphanage, a small one on the outskirts of London. We are not rich and it has been very hard to run the place, what with it falling to pieces from wind and rain and the safety of children at stake.
I had been let go off my job 2 years back and I've not had the strength in my bones to go back and search for jobs against younger people. Thus I've had to ask for funds more than necessary and funds have dried out mostly with more glamorous charities getting all the funding from footballers and celebrities. I had put up a few fliers in London and left it at that knowing that I'd have to file for bankruptcy sooner than later. I had contacted some of my friends at Arsenal and tried to wangle a few of my oldest friends to approach the players as a last resort.
But it seemed that all the players were busy and I couldn't get anything at all to go on and approach them. This happened in October last year. After 2 days of my putting up fliers, I received a call from someone who spoke only Spanish. I thought it was some nut calling and gave the phone to my mother who is of Spanish descent. She said that someone was asking for the directions to come and visit. I, apprehensive and unbelieving, gave the details and never expected them to come.
After 3 hours or so, a very high class car, a BMW came to our driveway. Out stepped Diego Costa and Willian. I was visibly disgusted but Diego Costa didn't mind. They spoke primarily to my mother and the Spanish caretaker. He doesn't speak a word of English but the goodness of his heart doesn't need words. They gave 50k pounds, each of them. It has kept us up and running till now and will do for the next 3 months or so.
The next time I met Costa was last Thursday, when he came and gave 30 blankets from the Chelsea store. He also invited me to Lagarta where he is running a school for 200. I also got complimentary tickets to today's game and I went to the Emirates for the first time since 2008 because I can't afford the season ticket price nowadays.
I know that these boards have an anti-Chelsea bias but I signed on to the guardian today to tell only this even though Diego told us to keep it unknown to others. I love Arsenal. But me, my family and the 56 kids i now tender to love Diego Costa more. I wrote this earlier knowing that Arsenal would win almost surely but hell, this team has given me more grief than anything else in life.
I cried after the match as an Arsenal fan. But I was happy inside as a Diego Costa and Willian fan. I read the comments on the article about the philanthropy of PL footballers to London but I was amazed that that Diego wasn't mentioned. I felt it was just the right time to pen this. Thank you for reading through.

I know he gets stick but I never judge him by his on the field antics. When I played I was similar but not to such an extent. He has passion which sometimes boils over but to me that is just the way he is. It is good to read this. I know it is nothing to these guys but it means a lot to those in need. You would have thought he would have got his son Oscar involved though. Well done Costa and Willian.

If there is a good chance of rotation due to Champions League fixtures , he is carrying an injury and might miss the first game , has tough fixtures , another player on red hot form . He is the best player in the League and the most explosive but you never know what is around the corner
