Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 23

Liverpool’s summer signing from Hoffenheim makes a statement of intent with a second double-figure haul in three Gameweeks. Chelsea’s momentum continues to build under Guus Hiddink, whilst Sergio Aguero’s stunning form seems to have solved our weekly armband quandary.

The Player

Two goals and an assist in Liverpool’s stunning 5-4 comeback win at Norwich has catapulted Robert Firmino into many Fantasy managers’ plans over the last few days.

Snapped up by Brendan Rodgers over the summer, the Brazilian was afforded just three starts in the first eight Gameweeks and failed to earn any attacking returns prior to Jurgen Klopp’s arrival at Anfield.

Since recovering from injury in Gameweek 10, Firmino has started 11 of the last 13 league outings and has played a part in 50% of Liverpool’s goals when on the pitch under Klopp.

The Brazilian’s 18-point haul – his highest of the season – arrives just two Gameweeks after he bagged a brace against Arsenal. Having produced a goal and two assists away to City in mid-November, he’s now served up double-figure returns in three of his previous ten starts.

With Christian Benteke failing to impress and Daniel Sturridge seemingly glued to the Anfield treatment table, Firmino looks poised to retain his spot as a “false nine” in Klopp’s 4-3-3 formation for the time being, offering us a viable out-of-position prospect in the centre of the park.

After next week’s trip to Leicester has passed, the Reds are handed four home fixtures in six, with trips to Sunderland and Palace also on their agenda.

Subject to over 98,000 transfers in so far, Firmino is the most sought-after player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game this week. At a time where the points have dried up for popular picks such as Mesut Ozil and Kevin De Bruyne, the Liverpool midfielder – at just 7.9 and owned by only 6% of FPL managers – could prove the canniest of acquisitions.

The Team

A 1-0 win over Arsenal extended Chelsea’s unbeaten league run to seven matches since the departure of Jose Mourinho, as the champions made a dent in their hosts’ title charge.

Diego Costa’s match-winner took his tally to five goals and two assists under the Dutchman’s guidance, compared to three goals and two assists in the opening 17 Gameweeks. Providing he can shake off the minor knee problem that forced him off at the Emirates, the Spain international’s transformation has brought him into contention for our three-man frontlines for arguably the first time this term.

In midfield, Hiddink’s recent deployment of Cesc Fabregas in the central support role – as evidenced by his goal and assist at home to Everton in the previous Gameweek – could also re-ignite his flagging season, whilst Eden Hazard’s return from injury against Arsene Wenger’s outfit offers the Blues’ boss further reason for optimism. Willian has also thrived since Mourinho made his exit, serving up a goal and five assists in seven appearances.

At the back, Chelsea have now collected a clean sheet in all three away outings under Hiddink – by contrast, they kept out their opponents just once away from home whilst the Special One was at the helm. Although the Blues have conceded in all four recent home fixtures, Branislav Ivanovic continues to thrive in the final third – without any attacking returns until Mourinho left, he now has one goal and three assists, supplemented by nine bonus points, in the last seven.

With in-form options from back to front, the Blues now prepare for a kind run of fixtures that could maintain their recent renaissance. Trips to Watford and Norwich in the next six are allied with three home fixtures (MUN, NEW, STO) with sides that have struggled for a cutting edge, strengthening their case for inclusion in our Fantasy plans.

The Talking Point

Sergio Aguero’s back-to-back double-figure hauls against Palace and West Ham look to have all but settled our weekly armband conundrum, with the in-form Argentine looking back to his predatory best.

At such a lofty price of 13.4, though, Aguero’s acquisition does force us to tighten the purse strings elsewhere and with the likes of Dele Alli an obvious enabler in the centre of the park, it may well be that we’ll start to see far more template teams in the second half of the season.

With less variety, the quest for differentials could be key to a climb in overall rankings. Riyad Mahrez, the most-owned player in the FPL game has a single assist in six. As we touched on above, midfield big-hitters such as Mesut Ozil (a goal and assist in the last six Gameweeks) and Kevin De Bruyne (seven blanks in nine), who are the second and fourth most popular options in the centre of the park, are both looking shadows of their former selves. Fortunately, this arrives at a time where the likes of Firmino is flourishing and Alexis Sanchez (9% ownership) signalled his recovery by emerging from the bench against Chelsea.

Up top, the 49%-owned Romelu Lukaku has now scored in just one of Everton’s last six, with his failure to deliver against Swansea all the more galling for those who captained him over Aguero. Chelsea’s in-form Costa sits in a mere 6% of sides, whilst the 7.0-priced Charlie Austin (0.6% owned) wasted no time in reminding us of his qualities by bagging a debut winner at Old Trafford.

Given their vast ownership, taking a chance and parting company with popular picks could backfire if they rediscover their form and force us down the rankings. On the other hand, for those Fantasy managers brave enough to roll the dice in order to eke out an advantage, it may well be the best way forward.

Coutinho is just an elite version of Townsend

Coutinho is as good for Liverpool as Townsend will be for Newcastle but that's just my thinking...,both of them have the potential to be much better if they improve their decision making

Townsend, Navas, Coutinho all get bad press for being a bit crap in the shooting stakes...and they are. The fact is they all tie up a lot of defensive time and are much better than just "crap shots"...

Navas, I'd say, does a lot of good to his team, both in hogging defenders and in defending himself. But the difference to Cout and Townsend is, firstly that Navas does great defensive work in a team in which nobody else does, but other than that, it is that he doesn't take all those desperate shots and doesn't constantly lose possession. Teach Townsend to defend more and shoot less and you've got yourself a good winger right there. Not a new Bale nor a new Robben, perhaps, but a good winger nevertheless. It's not as if he couldn't play the ball.

I agree, I'd like to see him adapt his game slightly so he can become me a player who gets to the byline and gets crosses in.

Sounds obvious but the more crosses you get into the box, the more opportunities strikers like mitrovic will get to score.

I said when we bought mitrovic that from what I'd seen (limited highlights and YouTube) that we needed guys to feed in crosses for him. Is Townsend that player? Not at the moment, but he has the tools to be

There's every possibility that he's sort of too dumb to be turned into a decent player, though. That's a real worry. If Poche came to that conclusion, it may well be that McClaren can't work him into a good player either. Sometimes that just happens. I can't imagine that Poche hasn't tried to make the kid understand how to play.

              True. Only time will tell.

By the way, I had to head in to work but saw your reply re Thauvin. I think it's just one of those things where he hasn't settled and for whatever reason, he's not in favour. McClaren did say that he's struggled to settle in the northeast and adapt to the way of English football. However, he did also say that they have faith in his potential

Only time will tell but it could also be why they don't want to sell him back to Marseille and only send him on loan

We can but two things -

1)over the course of entire season fixture difficulty is balanced out
2)xG is more accurate if the sample size is bigger

So when we take xG form , we are considering only 10-15 shots which is a very small sample size for xG

Same with me. The only problem is Chelsea's clean sheets. Since Hiddink took over, they got CS against Palace (who scored 1 goal in 5 matches I think), MU and 10 man arsenal. Conceded 2 against WBA and 3 against Everton. I would like to see a run of clean sheets against teams that can score goals. By that time it might be too late though.

Yaya. I think United will tighten up this week. I bought Arnie before the last United game and am benching him this week.

      Gave in and wildcarded.

What do you guys think of this?

      Foster - Butland
      Williams - Dawson - Bellerin - Moreno - Zouma
      Sanchez - Firmino - Payet - Alli - Mahrez
      Aguero - Lukaku - Mitrovic

I like it for the most part. Don't mind the Mitrovic punt, but you may very quickly regret not having Kane. I think Vardy remains the best budget striker this week.

Moreno is the main red flag for me. I think drop him for a 4.0 (Simpson, or Targett if you fancy it), and finding money from somewhere else to upgrade Zouma to Ivan.

Other than that benching headaches are the main issue, but with DGWs, blanks and bench boost to come, that doesn't matter.

Yeah Mitros a punt but need to make up some ground! Cheers for the Moreno advice think I'll go with Simpson for the minute.

Lukaku over Kane? OK, actually don't know who to get there. Got both.
I'd downgrade Moreno to Simpson/Targett, and upgrade Zouma to Azpi or something

        1. Alli vs NOR (A)

I don't know what on earth United are thinking about. He's obviously lost the fans, the teams not working and he himself has pretty much had enough. Time for a change.

It hasn't worked and very doubtful it can work now.

Yes they did. The only thing of note with that is that they happened to be at the same club...which is nothing other than a coincidence,

Now make a list of all the managers in the game that have lost the fans and have ended up either resigning or getting sacked....It's a very long list.

Got the same midfield as me. If it matters im benching Ozil.

Southampton pack the park in the middle and ozil will have 2 marking him.

Kdb/alli could explode, ozil potentially gets an assist.

Just think what games gonna be the highest scoring. Spurs and city games imo

Who's gonna do better this gameweek (think I already know the answer)

                Lukaku (c)
                Aguero (c) - 4

                  Or even..
                  A) Payet (c) + Lukaku
                  B) Payet + Kun (c) - 4

                    Kun surprise blank incoming.
Sort of got to armband him regardless

Yeah 100% have to armband him, I wanted him 3 weeks ago but refused to WC it, has cost me in a way as I ballsed up even more by rushing Payet when I should've prioritised Kun

                Is aguero a necessity now
I have kdb who racked up a high score against Sunderland last time around ..
Also would Barkley to firminho be a great option if Liverpool go through to wembley?

I think I'd get Lukaku and Firmino for DGWs but no one knows when that'll be and IMO I don't believe it will be GW25 like some people do, but literally no one knows

                Hello all!!

I've got three options and need some help

                A) Lukaku -> Aguero ( free )
                B) Ighalo and Walcott -> Aguero / 6.0 mid
                C) Same move as B but go for a 5.1 mid to safe some cash to do Ozil -> Sanchez next week

                Cheers

                      Then B or C definitely
I would be tempted by C, there are a few decent cleap mids you could have as your 5th mid

Just a few questions that I'd like your answers on:

                1) Is Sanchez essential at this point or can it wait?

                2) Is it time to lose Lukaku and switch to Ighalo?

                3) Is it time to lose Ozil?

                4) Is it time to lose Mahrez?

                5) Should you have 3 defenders above 5.5m or should you only have 2 above 5.5m so that you have more funds to spend on midfield and attack

                6) Should I have a team that contains both Alli and Antonio?

                  can wait
                  not neccessarily
                  not neccessarily
                  No
Depends, dont think you need 3 premium def. 1 is enough then mid then make up the rest with cheapies
If not Payet then Antonio is a decent option, assume 1 would be a 5th mid anyway and not play every game

Yh I have Cresswell, Toby and Monreal and I feel like I should drop one of them down to Ashley Williams. Defences are so unreliable this year.

I have Payet so that would be a problem. The premise remains however, should there be 2 cheap midfielders just so that I can have 3 midfielders like Sanchez, Silva and Payet.

                  1) Wait

                  2) I have both and would rather drop Lukaku

                  3) No

                  4) No

                  5) I only have one

                  6) I can't see any harm in that if you don't have Payet

3 not yet but sell him for a dgwer
4 not yet no blank in gw27 is handy
5 have 5 playing defenders price means nothing

for number 5, the price takes away from money spent elsewhere. Just wondering if i'm being efficient seeing as defence is so unreliable this season.

Wonder if all these lukaku sellers will just be transferring him back in for the dgw. Losing a lot of value on the way

I don't have an issue with this - They don't really lose any value. Those of us who keep him until after the DGW and then sell won't have any financial advantage over those that sell him now, buy him back for the DGW and then sell afterwards. In fact, we will probably end up worse off as far as TV is concerned - Although we will have saved 2 transfers.

Should I upgrade McCarthy to a playing keeper? Currently have DDG.

                    2FT, barring injuries.

Soon you'll want 15 fit players. A DGW keeper can outscore DDG to make it worthwhile.

With Shawcross out, maybe Lukaku over Aguero triple C in (potential) dgw25 is worth considering, (stk LIV) would likely get the full 180 minutes too
