Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 23

Liverpool’s summer signing from Hoffenheim makes a statement of intent with a second double-figure haul in three Gameweeks. Chelsea’s momentum continues to build under Guus Hiddink, whilst Sergio Aguero’s stunning form seems to have solved our weekly armband quandary.

The Player

Two goals and an assist in Liverpool’s stunning 5-4 comeback win at Norwich has catapulted Robert Firmino into many Fantasy managers’ plans over the last few days.

Snapped up by Brendan Rodgers over the summer, the Brazilian was afforded just three starts in the first eight Gameweeks and failed to earn any attacking returns prior to Jurgen Klopp’s arrival at Anfield.

Since recovering from injury in Gameweek 10, Firmino has started 11 of the last 13 league outings and has played a part in 50% of Liverpool’s goals when on the pitch under Klopp.

The Brazilian’s 18-point haul – his highest of the season – arrives just two Gameweeks after he bagged a brace against Arsenal. Having produced a goal and two assists away to City in mid-November, he’s now served up double-figure returns in three of his previous ten starts.

With Christian Benteke failing to impress and Daniel Sturridge seemingly glued to the Anfield treatment table, Firmino looks poised to retain his spot as a “false nine” in Klopp’s 4-3-3 formation for the time being, offering us a viable out-of-position prospect in the centre of the park.

After next week’s trip to Leicester has passed, the Reds are handed four home fixtures in six, with trips to Sunderland and Palace also on their agenda.

Subject to over 98,000 transfers in so far, Firmino is the most sought-after player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game this week. At a time where the points have dried up for popular picks such as Mesut Ozil and Kevin De Bruyne, the Liverpool midfielder – at just 7.9 and owned by only 6% of FPL managers – could prove the canniest of acquisitions.

The Team

A 1-0 win over Arsenal extended Chelsea’s unbeaten league run to seven matches since the departure of Jose Mourinho, as the champions made a dent in their hosts’ title charge.

Diego Costa’s match-winner took his tally to five goals and two assists under the Dutchman’s guidance, compared to three goals and two assists in the opening 17 Gameweeks. Providing he can shake off the minor knee problem that forced him off at the Emirates, the Spain international’s transformation has brought him into contention for our three-man frontlines for arguably the first time this term.

In midfield, Hiddink’s recent deployment of Cesc Fabregas in the central support role – as evidenced by his goal and assist at home to Everton in the previous Gameweek – could also re-ignite his flagging season, whilst Eden Hazard’s return from injury against Arsene Wenger’s outfit offers the Blues’ boss further reason for optimism. Willian has also thrived since Mourinho made his exit, serving up a goal and five assists in seven appearances.

At the back, Chelsea have now collected a clean sheet in all three away outings under Hiddink – by contrast, they kept out their opponents just once away from home whilst the Special One was at the helm. Although the Blues have conceded in all four recent home fixtures, Branislav Ivanovic continues to thrive in the final third – without any attacking returns until Mourinho left, he now has one goal and three assists, supplemented by nine bonus points, in the last seven.

With in-form options from back to front, the Blues now prepare for a kind run of fixtures that could maintain their recent renaissance. Trips to Watford and Norwich in the next six are allied with three home fixtures (MUN, NEW, STO) with sides that have struggled for a cutting edge, strengthening their case for inclusion in our Fantasy plans.

The Talking Point

Sergio Aguero’s back-to-back double-figure hauls against Palace and West Ham look to have all but settled our weekly armband conundrum, with the in-form Argentine looking back to his predatory best.

At such a lofty price of 13.4, though, Aguero’s acquisition does force us to tighten the purse strings elsewhere and with the likes of Dele Alli an obvious enabler in the centre of the park, it may well be that we’ll start to see far more template teams in the second half of the season.

With less variety, the quest for differentials could be key to a climb in overall rankings. Riyad Mahrez, the most-owned player in the FPL game has a single assist in six. As we touched on above, midfield big-hitters such as Mesut Ozil (a goal and assist in the last six Gameweeks) and Kevin De Bruyne (seven blanks in nine), who are the second and fourth most popular options in the centre of the park, are both looking shadows of their former selves. Fortunately, this arrives at a time where the likes of Firmino is flourishing and Alexis Sanchez (9% ownership) signalled his recovery by emerging from the bench against Chelsea.

Up top, the 49%-owned Romelu Lukaku has now scored in just one of Everton’s last six, with his failure to deliver against Swansea all the more galling for those who captained him over Aguero. Chelsea’s in-form Costa sits in a mere 6% of sides, whilst the 7.0-priced Charlie Austin (0.6% owned) wasted no time in reminding us of his qualities by bagging a debut winner at Old Trafford.

Given their vast ownership, taking a chance and parting company with popular picks could backfire if they rediscover their form and force us down the rankings. On the other hand, for those Fantasy managers brave enough to roll the dice in order to eke out an advantage, it may well be the best way forward.

Adrian has better fixtures and hes not even in the watchlist. Yet hennssey with no form (0 CS in 4 games) is at the top.

I got him in for Myhill as my Aguero short-change enabler. Got me more points in the last three weeks too so all is good. Need to move on McCarthy at some point though for BB.

Think Moreno and Liverpool's defense have frustrated me for the last time.

Got 2 free, so how about:

Delving more into the potential rescheduling announcements for the C1C final by looking at what happened in the last 3 years:

2013 Swansea bt Chelsea on 23rd Jan. Eden Hazard tried to beat up a ballboy. Rescheduled match v Liverpool was announced on 30th Jan (played Feb 17th)
Bradford bt Villa in the other semi final so it was only a L2 game that was postponed because of this one.

2014 Man City bt West Ham (only just - 9-0 on aggregate) on 21st Jan. Rescheduled game v Man Utd on 27th Jan for March 25th
Sunderland bt Man Utd (on pens) 22nd Jan. Rescheduled match v WBA on 14th March for May 7th

2015 Chelsea bt Liverpool on Jan 27th. Rescheduled match v Leicester on Feb 20th for April 29th.
Spurs bt Sheff Utd on Jan 28th. Rescheduled match v QPR on Jan 29th for 7th March

So the earliest re-arrangement was announced the day after the semi - but this was an easy one as both Spurs and QPR had already been knocked out of the FA Cup, so they used the blank R6 Date. The next quickest was rescheduled a week later, but a couple of them took a few weeks to re-arrange.

Make of this what you will...

                My dear chap.

You fall into the same trap.

One does not just TRANSLATE poetry, one RECREATES the poem in a different language.

The more skilful the writer, the more similar the image/idea/narrative remains ... the intention of the original poet is paramount.

Your goalkeeping options are clearly week. If Hennessey loses his place then you'd be left with 2 Norwich options from 6 defensive players. I believe that going without Lukaku is a risk, even if his form has dropped and that is a matter of opinion only. I really like the team, but I'd be worried about KDB. Perhaps swap him for a cheaper option (Ozil or Silva) and invest in a better defender than Bennett or a better goalkeeper? No Everton attacking players is a risk in view of the fixtures.

    Just a thought……

There was a chat earlier about wanting more posts like Lucy’s Southampton round-up, and a previous similar detailed Norwich run-down. Maybe there could be an assigned correspondent for each PL team who posts a similar summary every month or so, keeps an eye on specific club news/tit-bits/inside info etc and also has their own email address to field email questions etc? Maybe they could be “paid” for to be a member as their reward?

Tbf I think you've got all of their best players. Wanyama and VVD are PL standard. Still not sold on Forster tbh, be interested to hear your thoughts?

Scott Brown was great when he was younger but he wouldnt cut it now. Cant see anyone else coming south.

I think Forster was the weakest purchase of the lot but I still think he's a decent PL keeper - there are many worse in the PL, imo. I don't think he was worth £10m or a lot of the hype. He kept so many CSs before injury because of the team set up, rather than his own performances. He made some pathetic blunders, including vs Villa and Man Utd.

      Everton update:

Our defense remains a shambles and a no go in FPL, despite how attacking our fullbacks are. Howard is a liability that can't defend set pieces, and although he pulls off some good saves is always prone to a near post blunder. McCarthy is key for us and when he's playing our back 4 looks even leakier.

The silver lining is we seem to be able to score at will, with Lukaku taking it up a level this season - he seems a better all round striker, his first touch has improved significantly and has thrived due to the service provided by Deulofeu and Kone. Barkley has still struggled to maintain form, he sometimes lacks confidence and picks the sideways pass rather than driving at goal and taking a shot.

In short, the only player I'd have from Everton is Lukaku and maybe Barkley for the DGW as he'd play both games (Deulofeu would be rotated and often gets taken off early or brought off the bench late on).

At this rate he will become the next Bale 😛

Btw , I am curious as to why Bertrand isn't playing LWB , he is better going forward than Matt no?

Think Berty is just better at the LCB role.

This. No way could Targett do that role. If we had two Berties, they'd both play. 😛 Targett's crossing is excellent though.

                  Ha!

Btw , read above you think Forster is not worth it for 10 million... 😮

I would have thought Stekelenburg would have increased your rating of Forster !

Stek being rubbish does not make Forster worth £10m. Similarly, comparing Man Utd's performances with Villa's, doesn't make Man Utd seem good.

So if I've got this right, sorry it's be done ad infinitum I know, but if it's a Liverpool-Everton league cup final those will be the only teams currently with a DGW due to the fact their league fixture clashes with the final? Correct?!

So Payet may be the better bet over Firmino is its a Liv-Eve final as he plays in GW27.

I'm 99% sure that there won't be any DGW announcements before 5pm on Saturday.

I'm 99% sure that if there is a DGW in GW 25, it'll be announced before the GW 24 deadline: Next Tuesday, 6.45pm.

So basically, keep hold of your FTs until we get news of a DGW, if there's no announcement by next Tuesday afternoon assume there's no DGW and spend them accordingly.

I guess the 2nd one is more important than the 1st, it doesn't really matter when DGW 25 is announced, as long as it's announced before 6.45pm next Tuesday.

What was your gw1 starting XI and subs ? Mine was :

      -----------------McCarthy-----------------------
      ----------Cedric Francis Targett-------------
      Sterling Mane Walcott Hazard(c)Sinclair
      --------------Rooney Benteke----------------
      -----------------------------------------------------
      Hennessey Sakho Darmian Jenkinson

(29 points) 😀 and benched Darmian for Targett by mistake (8 point mistake)

Yes that's sound enough but doing the knee jerk changes does give you the advantage of price rises. Having said that, considering my performance this year anyone would be better advised doing the opposite of what I suggest.
