Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 26

John Terry limps off during Chelsea’s 5-1 home rout over Newcastle. Arsenal centre-halves Gabriel and Laurent Koscielny are both injury concerns, whilst Man United and Stoke’s problems in defence intensify.

Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has concerns in central defence after Laurent Koscielny was replaced at the break against Leicester City because of a dead leg. Gabriel Paulista missed out on a third straight start alongside the Frenchman after sustaining a “slight hamstring injury” he picked up during training.

Gabriel’s influence alongside Koscielny had earned the Gunners back-to-back clean sheets prior to yesterday’s 2-1 win over Leicester. Priced at a mere 4.3 in FPL, the Brazilian had arrived on our Fantasy radars as a cut-price route into Wenger’s defence, given that Nacho Monreal, at 5.9, is the cheapest of Arsenal’s other starters. Arsenal are braced for a superb run of home fixtures from this point onwards that could well see many jump aboard the Gabriel bandwagon, providing he recovers in time to force Mertesacker down the pecking order once again.

Aston Villa
Remi Garde confirmed that Gabriel Agbonlahor was replaced at the 58-minute mark at Villa Park after suffering from vertigo:

“I don’t know the extent exactly. I have been told he is suffering with vertigo. He didn’t feel well. He had a headache.”

Chelsea
Blues skipper John Terry was withdrawn early on during a 5-1 home hammering of Newcastle on Saturday evening. With a Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain tomorrow night and FA Cup encounter with Man City next weekend, Guus Hiddink went on to say:

“We are coming up to two big games, we’ll see what is the damage tomorrow after such an intense game. Two days [of rest] isn’t enough we’d like to have three games, but it’s good we won. Tomorrow will be an examination of John Terry, who has a small muscular problem. It was in his hamstring but tomorrow there will be a scan and then we’ll know more. We can say more tomorrow but it’s difficult because we have a big game next week. We must take a wise decision in terms of Tuesday and next weekend.

Similarly, Oscar is expected to recover from the calf complaint that prevented him from featuring against the Magpies.

Indeed, reports earlier today reports indicate that both Terry and Oscar have trained ahead of the trip to France. Chelsea have since confirmed, though, that Terry has failed to make the squad to face PSG, though Oscar has been passed fit and included.

Crystal Palace
Alan Pardew revealed that Yannick Bolasie and Bakary Sako will join the Crystal Palace squad on a trip to Spain this week, priming them for a return to action against Spurs in next weekend’s FA Cup action:

“I think he [Bolasie] will be in and around the team next week and Sako. They’re both important players for us.”

Bolasie’s return could well spark the Eagles attack back into life after some dire displays in the final third. Pardew shifted Connor Wickham onto the flank at home to Watford last weekend but with Bolasie and Sako closing in on returns, the former Sunderland man looks likely to drop back down to the bench. This would allow Adebayor – who notched the hosts’ only goal in a 2-1 defeat – continue as the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 set-up once again.

Liverpool
Speaking on Daniel Sturridge’s first start since Gameweek 8, Jurgen Klopp said that the former Chelsea frontman was replaced after an hour as a precautionary measure and not because of a niggle:

“You saw he was not too happy when we took him off! Everything was okay but it was not like he gave a sign or something like this, but I think it made sense to take him out after 60 minutes. It was perfect for him and hopefully he’s available for the next game too.”

Pitched at 9.9, Sturridge certainly piques our interest by way of his clinical nature and capacity for explosive returns. Looking beyond the Reds’ blank next Gameweek, they play host to Manchester City in Gameweek 28 and potentially face a blank in Gameweek 30 (in the event that Chelsea overcome the Sky Blues in the FA Cup), which tempers Sturridge’s immediate appeal. Assuming Liverpool’s home clash against Chelsea isn’t rescheduled, many Fantasy managers will be tempted to source coverage for attack that chalked up 13 goals in their past four match-ups.

Elsewhere in the Merseysiders’ camp, Adam Lallana (calf) and Lucas Leiva (hamstring) were both omitted from the squad with minor complaints.

Manchester United
Louis van Gaal expressed frustration at the fact that Matteo Darmian faces several weeks on the sidelines following a heavy fall that dislocated his shoulder at the Stadium of Light:

“It is unbelievable; it is a dislocation so he will be out for several weeks. We do not have many more full-backs, not even in the [youth] system. Donald Love has played today at right-back and he did it well.”

Stoke City
Stoke City’s defensive concerns intensified on the weekend, with Marc Muniesa (hamstring) and Glen Johnson (knee) both leaving the field of play. Although Mark Hughes believes the former could feature against Aston Villa next Gameweek, he’s less optimistic about Johnson’s chances:

“Marc felt his hamstring but we’re hoping it’s nothing too serious. We’ve obviously got a break now and hopefully it will only be a 10 to 14 day lay-off. Glen is a little bit more of a concern. Philipp Wollscheid fell on him – he thought he might be ok to continue but that wasn’t the case.”

On the attacking front, Marko Arnautovic missed out through illness. The Austrian winger has shed owners in light of a five-match goalless streak, but could invite investment prior to Stoke’s upcoming pair of favourable home encounters against Villa and Newcastle. Further bolstering his allure, the Potters are guaranteed a fixture in Gameweek 30 (at home to Southampton) and face just one road trip (away to Chelsea) across the next four Gameweeks.

Sunderland
Sam Allardyce is hopeful that Jan Kirchhoff – who lasted just 15 minutes against Manchester United before succumbing to a hamstring complaint – will heal up during Sunderland’s fortnight off:

“The break has come at a good time because of the injuries. Lens has just had a hernia op. There’s Kaboul, Watmore and obviously Kirchhoff, who came off injured. Two weeks gives us a great opportunity to get people fit. Seb Larsson is making his way back.”

At the other end of the pitch, Jermain Defoe was substituted at the 70-minute mark to avoid a recurrence of a hamstring injury:

“He’ll be alright because we protected him by making sure we brought him off. Fatigue kicks in in the last 10 or 15 minutes and if you’ve had a fitness test on a hamstring, the last thing we wanted was him pulling up and being out for three or four weeks.”

Watford
Jurado was absent for Watford’s 2-1 win at Crystal Palace because of a calf injury.

West Ham
Enner Valencia was withdrawn just after the hour-mark during West Ham’s 2-2 draw at Norwich due to injury, according to match reports.

What to do about Cedric? started the last six before this one? last thing you need though is an uncertain starting coming off the bench with a 20 minute cameo..

That said I have to many other players to shift so might risk playing 10 for GW27..

Would be guessing he is more likely to drop if anything.

Blank, city, palace and Chelsea next four. And it seems like his returns are diminished after the real forwards and Coutinho are back.

How many players are you hoping to field in GW30?

I know the weekend games will give us a better insight. I'm looking at 9 atm, 10 if Chelsea beat City, and 11 if I take a -4 (which I probably won't do unless I have injuries/ suspensions)

Think it could be a great GW to see a rank jump with the more week-to-week players not being aware of it until the last minute.

Butland, Simpson, Mahrez, Vardy and soon to be Arnautovic

Confident that Daniels and Williams will play

So 5, quite possibly 7 at the moment

Will bring in another 2 before GW30 to give me 9 and if Chelsea beat Man City, then Aguero will play

Seven already playing plus 2 F/T to play this week and 3 T/F in between now and then. The saving grace is that Leicester, Stoke and Southampton have decent fixtures and with rotation a mixed defence of those teams looks promising. The transfers for gw's 28,29 and 30 can be used to bring in players not in FA Cup in gw30.
A few favourable FA Cup results could improve the situation even more. I'm priming up for a GW32/33 wildcard ready for DGW34.

Here's hoping it all goes to plan.

I've saved the two chips that matter. The blanks and DGW s should be good.

Still have your WC? Think using it the week before the DGW to bring in a sh!t load of DGW players and use bench boost could be lethal. Likely to be in GW34

Then there will be another DGW likely to be be GW36/37 which could be decent for triple (C) a player

WC intact. Might go TC chip for first double, then WC and boost for last.
Bit worried WC ing for 34 as it would screw my team for the rest of season if I base it around DGW.

Only problem is that the 2nd DGW will only involve 4 teams meaning your BB will account for a lot of single game players

If you get 15 DGW players in theory for the DGW34 and BB, that's effectively 30 players in one GW

Assuming they score a basic 2 points each that's 60 before clean sheets, goals, assists, captaincy, etc.

Get what you are saying. But isn't GW 35 probably going to hold some blanks for some of the teams involved in the DGW34? then you will be scr3wed. Better to set up your team for DGW37 in my mind, as you know no teams will have blanks in GW38.

Or am I completely crazy here?

Nope I'd imagine there will be no blanks at all that's what we're going through now

GW27 = blank for Liverpool, Man City, Everton, Newcastle

GW30 = blank for teams that win in the FA Cup

So we'll have the blanks out of the way before the DGWs are rescheduled which is why I think fielding as many for GW30 is very important

Nope. There will definitely be blanks in GW35 unless Prem teams don't make last 4 of the FA cup.

                        Okay. Thanks for the response.

It all depends on which/how many teams will have DGWs in 34 and 37 then. Too early to make any concrete plans, although I still think it could be a viable options to TC in 34, WC in GW 36, BB in 37 ?

Yep. Definitely. Could be the best move. All depends on when they get rearranged to. If man city get through to the semis of the cup they'll have 3 games to rearrange and only 2 open weeks for them. Potential for maybe a triple GW. Unlikely but possible

GW34-38 is only four weeks left in the season and when you look at the bigger teams who play a DGW in GW34, they have a fairly nice run in. But I admit it is still quite early to be definite about these things atm

Well excluding GW34 obviously considering that will be the DGW (most likely)

                        GW35, GW36, GW37, GW38

Lot of the top teams have decent fixtures and there will be a big push surely for those near the top depending on the status of the title race.

                        Haha.

This thread has turned out as a battle of knowledge between ™ and Bowstring. Not of foreseeing player points, but of the logistics of DGWs.

I don't remember the DGWs in the past to be this complicated? Maybe it is just because I am much more addicted to the game this year?

It looks like most of us with the Wildcard, BB and TC left are all planning the same. Reassuring but almost becoming template.

You'd be surprised how few we are. I think only about 20% of all players have WC, BB and TC unused

I'd imagine a lot of them would be in the top 10k or thereabouts but still, if you're not in you can't win, etc, etc.

                    TOP 10,000 FPL MANAGERS

                    Number of Chips Available
                    0 11.5%
                    1 27.1%
                    2 24.6%
                    3 23.3%
                    4 13.4%

That means 36% of the top 10,000 players have 3-4 chips still available. So basically we are part of a 1 in 3 group, which is fairly decent. When we take into account how many of the 23.3% (3 chips) have AOA, WC and only one of BB/ TC then that should make the percentage drop a little

You can't really wildcard until the rearrangements have been put in the calendar.

This might not be till later although you'd hope t would be by gw31. The blank gw35 is the key planner.

If you can negotiate that well you could TC in 34 WC in 36 and BB in 37. As a slight difference to the standard WC33 and BB34.

Need to know teams and when the games are before that though and until then it's sit and wait.

I considered moving Aguero out, but his next 2 games are Liverpool and Villa. Could score a dozen ...

It's "The moaning of life" on SKY 1 so it happily doesn't have the not funny horrible Ricky Gervais in it.

Jordan Rhodes isn't good enough for the Premier League

They said the same about Austin, Deeney, Wilson, Vardy.....

Not sure who 'they' are, but Austin, Deeney and Wilson are and always have been considerably better than Rhodes. Vardy is a bit of an anomaly since he wasn't even a secure starter when Leicester were in the Champ. I've watched him on and off since he was at Huddersfield, and I really don't think he offers anything other than easy finishes.

I've got Kun/ Kane/ Kaku up front at the mo. Thinking Kun to Vardy for GW28 then Kaku to Kun for GW29 to make the most of AVL matchups...worth the risk? Don't have any other MCI or EVE.

    Thanks!

So you only want to play 1 up front this GW?

It would give me Vardy and Kane this GW?

I guess I mean keeping Kaku for the AVL game - most a getting rid of him now
