Captain Sensible – Gameweek 27

Next up this Friday we roll our usual pre-Gameweek members article, focusing on the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s eight fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

With no Sergio Aguero to fall back on this week due to the Capital One Cup final, you’ve voted Jamie Vardy as the standout Gameweek 27 candidate as Leicester entertain Norwich.

Somewhat surprisingly, the Foxes forward has been far from explosive this season and managed double-figures on just three occasions – Vardy’s consistency has been key to his lofty position, though, having scored or assisted in 10 of 12 King Power appearances. The Canaries, meanwhile, have conceded 15 times in their last five matches, including a 2-0 defeat at Villa.

A trio of players are jostling for second position in this week’s Captain Poll. Dimitri Payet currently leads the way on 23% as West Ham prepare for the visit of Sunderland. The Frenchman has already bagged a 10-point haul against the Black Cats earlier in the season, though his home form has been a little underwhelming, with a just a single assist in his last five Upton Park appearances.

Riyad Mahrez looks a very viable alternative to Vardy for the Norwich showdown. Backed by only 14% of voters, the Algerian has been far more explosive than his team-mate and served up double-figures on 10 occasions. His lack of penalty duties – which have since been handed to Vardy – is clearly a major factor here.

Harry Kane sits next in line with just 10% of the votes ahead of a plum home clash with Swansea. Although he’s earned points in four of the last five Gameweeks, the Spurs striker has mainly thrived on his travels in recent matches and has blown hot and cold at the Lane – he’s produced points in only five of his 13 home appearances. Kane is expected to wear a protective mask to cover a broken nose on Sunday afternoon after missing last night’s win over Fiorentina.

Below that quartet, there’s a host of differentials challenging for our armband attention.

Sunderland’s Wahbi Khazri rolls up to Upton Park on the back of a goal and two assists in his last couple of appearances. Diego Costa has bagged seven goals and three assists in his last eight outings but is handed a tough task to replicate that sort of form as Chelsea make their way to St Mary’s. Tottenham’s Dele Alli, meanwhile, has been selected by just 1% despite serving up two goals and three assists in his last four appearances. Like Kane, he’s performed better on the road, though, and has served up just three assists in his last six at the Lane.

Next up, we now delve into the data over the last four matches to shed further light on the situation and assess the validity of the current crop of poll results.

The great Arnie vs Siggy debate comes down to...

    A) Arnie (AVL, NEW), then > Siggy (NOR, bou, AVL) - miss out on Myhill > Hart in prep for City DGW

    B) Siggy (tot, ars, NOR, bou, AVL) - get Hart who can play in GW29 instead of Butland vs che, and will have a DGW in the future.

Midfielders "To Score Two Goals or More" betting (16/1 and under)...

    11/1 Mahrez, Alli
    12/1 Payet, Arnautovic, Walters
    16/1 Sanchez, Eriksen

Personally, I'm looking to off-load Firmino but I've already got the two at the head of the market and one of the joint third best (Payet). So, given Stoke's next two fixtures and their GW30 run-out, I'm well tempted by Arnautovic. He scrapes into the Top 10 midfielders in both the overall and PPG categories (I've excluded a couple of shooting stars and KDB in the latter) but like a few of us, I've been there and been burned by this chap already this season.

I've noticed in a couple of places (whoscored.com for one) that the other joint third favourite is predicted as playing up front tomorrow. I'm well aware that the guy is somewhat removed from being a superstar but he seems to get returns against the diddy teams (look at his games this year) and you could hardly get more diddy than Aston Villa and Newcastle.

Walters worth an unorthodox four week punt then?

Any other time I would agree with you on Arnautovic's consistency and reliability, but this is Aston Villa. I'm giving him the (C) band and here's why.

Firstly, Lukaku and Aguero have no game, with a lot fearing over Kane, so a punt can be taken without too much damage this week imo.

Villa lost 3-0 to their youth development side last week and now face a Stoke side that have found their mojo once again last week scoring 3 away to Bournemouth. Yes they blanked in the 4 games before that but look at the teams they were playing and the defences they were up against. With their defence being what it is, they have to attack.

Arnautovic is their top scorer, and if Bojan is ruled out he may take all set pieces. He plays LW in a very forward position and Aston Villa concede the majority of their chances down their right flank, meaning Arnautovic is a prime candidate to benefit.

Don't say this... I've been debating all week whether or not to take a 4pt hit to bring him in and decided against it in the end!

Long suffering Leicester fan here, also just brought in Fuchs. I highly doubt he will lose his place to Schlupp, Ranieri has spoken of him playing left wing and as a third choice striker (he played up front for us when he first broke out of the academy, he is very versatile). He has been primarily a left back for a few years now, but is nowhere near as good as Fuchs technically or defensively.

Fuchs will stay at left back for the sake of defensive solidity (same as De Laet losing his place to Simpson, who is stronger defensively) and what he offers at set pieces; I would think that Albrighton and Schlupp will fight it out for the place ahead of him on the left flank. Ben Chilwell could have already muscled the second choice left back birth from Schlupp if he is to play him further forward.

Hey you beautiful bunch of dudes!

I need some advice, as my team is looking sucky towards the blank gws. My plan is to WC before gw33, as I really need to restructure this shitty group of players (",)

DDG - Bellerin, Huth, VVD - Mahrez, Payet, Alli, Ayew, Özil - Ighalo, Austin
Bench fodder: Rudd - G.Johnson, Souare - Aguero

I have 1FT for this round. Should I transfer in a player, and in case who? DDG is likely to play, but not certain. Austin have been left on the bench, probably due to lacking fitness, but is not guaranteed a start this gw. What would you do and why?

    Mucho appreciado, mi amigos!

I dunno how much spare cash you have, but Austin to Vardy.
I would swap out DDG for a hit too. I don't think he will start

I have more spare cash than I need 😉

Austin will surely start soon? Why not this match? And he can score against anyone!
Instead of swapping DDG I would swap Rudd. But if DDG actually does start, how to justify -4 points for a gk swap?

One last option is to save the 1FT for unforeseen happenings the upcoming weeks. But you do not recommend that?

No the easiest fixture this week, but on my radar, certainly.

The lack of a GW30 is a huge issue with him
