Rate My Wildcard Team Surgery – Part Two

Welcome to the second of our Rate My Wildcard Team articles of the week. These will showcase the thoughts of one of the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors team on their Wildcard. Hopefully some of their key issues will mirror your own. Feel free to use this article thread to put forward your Wildcard teams and to help others with their Wildcard-related issues. Jonty presented his wildcard thoughts earlier in the week and next up is Andy85wsm with his all-out assault on Gameweek 34.

My Wildcard Team

Robles – Darlow
Smalling – Bellerin – Gabriel – Sakho – Delaney
Sanchez – KDB – Lanzini – Bolasie – Coutinho
Mitrovic – Aguero – Lukaku

Strategy

I plan to use my Gameweek 33 Wildcard to set me up with 15 players for Gameweek 34, when I will use my bench boost. The reason I’m wildcarding now is that my pre-Gameweek 33 team is not set up for the doubles at all with only Sergio Aguero and Dimitri Payet as decent options. For Gameweek 37 I will use my triple captaincy chip.

Key Issues

The De Bruyne Sacrifice

By bringing in Kevin De Bruyne alongside Sergio Aguero I have a huge amount of cash tied up in an erratic Manchester City attack, that plays away from home twice. Am I sacrificing too much by focusing so much cash in just two players?

Lack of Leicester and Spurs

In constructing my Wildcard team I’m waving goodbye to Kasper Schmeichel, Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy, Danny Rose, Dele Alli and Harry Kane. This is a scary prospect considering most have performed exceptionally well in recent weeks and all have a great Gameweek 35 fixture.

Sakho’s Inconsistency

Mamadou Sakho played like a schoolboy against Spurs in Gameweek 32, but like a seasoned warrior against Manchester United in the Europa League. Has he made too many mistakes to be considered nailed on in the Liverpool defence? Or will his excellent performances keep him in the first XI?

Regrets for Payet

Dimitri Payet is undoubtedly West Ham’s prize asset with his free kicks as good as penalties given his accuracy. Will I regret going for second best with Manuel Lanzini?

Mitrovic’s starts

Seeing Mitrovic benched against Norwich at the weekend looked ominous. He then came on to score a brace, including a penalty. He looks nailed on for now, but is he?

From the Sublime to the Ridiculously Dull

Yannick Bolasie represents a real maverick punt for the double Gameweek 33 for Crystal Palace. But keeping him for the London side’s next double in Gameweek 34 is a bridge too far for me. Instead I plan to swap him out for a player that is much maligned as the poster boy for dullards – James Milner. Is this the best use of that slot, or should I stick with Bolasie?

And yes, will do the same again for GWK 36 wildcarders.

I would PERSONALLY (not everyone's cup of tea) recommend Clyne + Iwobi instead of Lanzini and Gabriel

I like the look of that. I think Iwobi has secured his place. Sanchez and him appear to be working well together. Why break that after two great games.

As much as I like Iwobi, one bad result/performance might change things. His position is crowded, joel, ox and even walcott will be expecting minutes.

I'll take a look into the Clyne suggestion, two Arsenal attackers could be nice with those fixtures.

As for Lanzini it's not a straight up case of buying Lanzini instead of Payet. It's funds permitting. Lanzini is in because of price - nothing else really.

I've had a discussion already today. I can afford Payet+Firmino instead of KDB+Milner but it means an extra hit in GW35 or playing with 10 men

Yeah I'd much rather have Firmino of course but just can't fit everyone in.

Payet is obviously a great choice this week but is he worth a -4 or 10 men in GW35, I'm not sure.

Might still change my mind though if Firmino is passed fit or makes an appearance this week

    Robles Mignolet
    Bellerin Gabriel Simpson Mangala Sahko
    Sanchez KdB Payet Lanzini Coutinho
    Aguero Martial Lukaku

Does it need Man United def?

      http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/11432/

Yes it needs a United def IMO . Even if you do not go for an United defender , Simpson is a BIG NO for me .

Hart imo. Hart + Robles >> Mignolet + Robles. Get Clyne/Lovren instead of Mangala.

He is indeed. Maybe buy Dann for GW 33 and switch to Smalling in GW 34?

Do you have a plan to remove Bolasie? Otherwise I like it, Mangala IMO is not as good an option as Clichy, the word is the Kompany is on the mend and he will be thrown in when back, whilst in the league Clichy has started the last 6. Obviously, there is always the Lolarov risk.

    Migs / Robles
    Bellerin / Gabriel / Simpson / Delaney / Smalling
    Sanchez / Cout / Payet / Bolasie / 9.9
    Kun / Kaku / Martial

Issue is that the 9.9 has to be for a player that has a gw in 35. I am already in a lot of trouble for GW 35. Would appreciate some thoughts on that.

The DdG issue is that he is, I think, the cheapest dependable way into the Utd defence.

With keepers I'm looking at Darlow or Kasper to partner DdG or Robles. My issue with ropey double game week keepers is that they are the most all or nothing players on the pitch. If nothing is more likely, I might as well get a Kasper cleanie. But... £££!

Getting rid of any sort of Leicester defender seems a bit silly to me. They will try to continue to grind out low scoring games and cleansheets.

I am a little jealous of you getting rid of Mahrez though, I kept him in my WC last week but I think it may be a bit of a waste of a spot at the moment.

Are we being a little blinded by 1 KDB performance and forgetting that he did blank 5 games in a row prior to his injury? Plus the 4 double digit hauls have been at home. He has two away games in the DGW. I'm not sure if he warrants jeopardising the rest of the team.

The double and a blank help. If he was benched on Saturday I'd be a little more wary but the fact he was thrown straight in and there's no Sterling makes me a little happier

I get that. But I'd rather have Payet in my team and Kane, than a guy who is just back from injury who had 5 blanks prior to injury.

Both Payet and Kane are on fire! KDB could be. But it is a could be!

I don't quite understand getting KDB in. I had in for most of the season when he was fit and he was infuriating to own as he wasn't giving the returns you expect from that cost.

I much prefer a player who'll tick over 5 points every week instead of 15 points every 4-5 weeks.

    Currently...

    Migno DDG
    Bellerin Fuchs Coleman Smalling Dann
    Sanchez Lennon Iwobi Payet Cout
    Aguero Lukaku Mitro

    Which is 2ft for a 10 in GW35
and a minimum of 7 doubles in the GW37

I would ideally like to have people playnig against villa in the next couple of GWs...
Richie this week and Martial following but I'm not sure if it ruins the balance and certainly leaves me shorter for 35.

I agree with hazardous, Arsenal only got the league to play for and will give it all. Iwobi is in form but lacks the pedigree to maintain his place if he plays bad for a match or two unlike, say, Ozil or Sanchez. It's a gamble but I think it can come off, especially looking at the next 3-4 matches.

Arsenal have played like utter dogshite until Iwobi and Elneny came into the side. Walcott has been shocking aside from a few displays, he's likely on his way out this transfer window. Arsene isn't much of a tinkerer. Once he finds a system that works he tends to stick with it.

I'd put some money on Iwobi playing all games. He hasn't played most of the season so he should be pretty fresh like Welbeck.

My conundrum as everyone else; double arsenal defense or offense?

    Monreal + Lanzini or
Smalling + Iwobi, in your opinion?

    WC team:

    DDG - Mignolet
    Otamendi - Monreal - Bellerin - Ward - Simpson
    Sanchez - Payet - Coutinho - Mahrez - Lanzini
    Aguero - Lukaku - Mitrovic

    0.2 ITB

Lukaku is the only Everton player but the reasoning is that they don't really have anything to play for and I fear rotation. Same reasoning behind not tripling on Liverpool.

Hey dude. You're very right about MU defence, which is why I've been trying to avoid the likes of Darmian but there's a chance he could start both games of the double and saves a fair bit of cash and actually has ok attacking prospects.

In regards to your Arsenal conundrum I opted for Bellerin (already had a while) and Gabriel with Sanchez as Gabriel offers such great value into a defence with good fixtures. Iwobi I would say has more rotation risk.

DDG Migonlet is what I had for a lot of my WC drafts but I've opted for Robles for the double double in hope there's a CS somewhere in there and it saves some value and then changing DDG to Hart means I can get smalling in defence and have a keeper playing in GW35. (I had DDG Robles Otamendi at one point until I thought of GW35)

Mitrovic doesn't appear nailed and Newcastle still pretty poor but could still pay off. Other that, looks good!

First, my comments on Jontys team:

    - KdB causes too many sacirfices elsewhere in team
    - Wouldn't go without anmy of Kane/Alli/Mahez with GW33 and 35 in mind
    - Please say that Sakho is nailed!
    - No Payet could hurt

    And then
    RMWCT

    GW34:
    Mignolet
    Monreal - Gabriel - Sakho - Jagielka
Sanchez (ccc) - Payet - Lanzini - Couthino
    Aguero - Lukaku

bench: Ruddy - PVA - Alli

Yup, this is indeed my team and not Jonty's 🙂

KDB - you're right, it basically means no Payet for me. It also means I have 11 players in GW35 and don't have to take a hit. It's a big risk and one that will go down to the wire.

Kane, Alli and Mahrez is another risk but one I'm willing to take for the 15 DGW bench boost dream!

Sakho seems nailed enough but they do have quite a lot of fixtures.
