Captain Sensible – Gameweek 35

Up next this busy Friday afternoon, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of a reduced round of fixtures. As usual, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero holds a substantial lead at the summit with over 44% of the votes cast ahead of a home clash with Stoke. Although City have a Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid on Tuesday evening, the Argentine’s six goals in the last four look too good to ignore against a defence that’s conceded four times against both Liverpool and Spurs in their last two matches.

With 28% of the votes, Harry Kane is Aguero’s only real contender as Spurs prepare for the visit of West Brom. Although the Baggies have conceded just four times in five, Kane’s run of three double-figure hauls in five, which includes seven goals, an assist and 11 bonus points, suggests he’ll be a solid rival to the City striker.

Alexis Sanchez is some way back on a mere 5% despite netting three times across double Gameweek 34. The Arsenal midfielder has now racked up six goals and a couple of assists in his last six outings and travels to a Sunderland side with just a single clean sheet in their last nine at the Stadium of Light.

Southampton’s visit to Villa earns Graziano Pelle joint-third spot in the poll. With the midlands side having suffered the ignominy of relegation, the Italian is backed by 5% in light of four goals and three assists in his last five league outings.

Jurgen Klopp’s recent rotation policy means that Daniel Sturridge is another overlooked big-hitter. With Divock Origi ruled out, though, the England international may well lead the line at home to Newcastle – just 3% are willing to roll the dice on the 10.0-priced frontman, who has served up five goals and a pair of assists in six league appearances since returning from injury.

Further down, Pelle’s team-mate Sadio Mane is amongst a handful of candidates on the 1% mark. The Senegal international has netted three times in the last four now and bagged a hat-trick against Villa last season. Dele Alli is another differential option after his two-goal salvo at Stoke and is joined by the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez as all four prepare for home comforts.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics, though?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

Am I mad to fund Lanzini & Lukaku > Alli & Kane by taking a -4 to bring Rashford in for Martial?
Seems strange to spend points to bring a player in without a game. Love to have Defoe instead but a bit short of wonga.

The alternative is to get rid of Coutinho or KdB for Alli but don't want to miss out on any game-time they might have.

I have Coutinho and KDB as well. Not confident about either of their game times to be honest. Maybe losing one of them isn't the end of the world.

If I do the hit & take Martial out as well (he won't be a loss!) I'm left with 4.7...scraping the barrel I know. If I had an idea about the city & Liverpool line ups I'd be laughing.
Probs not what you want to hear but looking forward to PNE pitting their wits against the Villains next season. Atb.

    1) How many hits is it worth taking to ensure a full starting 11?
    2) Who are the priorities to get rid of and who should I replace them with?

Gabriel, Lovren, KDB, Coutinho and Mitrovic at risk.

(Already doing Martial --> Kane to field 11)

      1) Depends on your priorities. I am taking a -8 pt hit as it stands getting rid of three non playing players to set me up for the coming weeks.
      2) Everton assets imo. Hard to say who to replace with. Depends on your team.

I wouldn't get rid of Coutinho, but I understand if people do.

    Any hints please?

Currently have AOA and TC as well as £0.4ITB with 1FT.

    Robles / DeGea
    Simpson / Bellerin / Sagna / Gabriel / Clyne
    Lanzini / Barkley / Milner / Sanchez / Coutinho
    Aguero / Martial / Vardy

    Options I was thinking of:

    A) Barkley + Martial > Alli + Pelle (-4)
    B) Barkley + Martial > Drinkwater + Kane (-4)
    C) Martial + Vardy > Pelle + Okazaki / Ulloah (-4)

I know that I won't have a goalkeeper to field this week but don't want to loose too many points. Currently 2nd in my league with 3rd closely behind. Also is Vardy worth keeping for when he does eventually return? Thanks

A and B are good. If pushed then A.
Would get rid of Vardy too...as two game weeks is a long time especially in the last 4 deciding games.

    Kun Lukaku Martial

Proper toss up between Kane and Aguero this week.

It comes own to Aguero's possible minutes. City should hope to have the game done by 60-75 and he can come off... after his brace!

Stoke crumbled against Spurs last week when a goal went in. Proper apple crumble.

Spurs and Kane are in top form, have the home game too, no competitions to distract them and a game on Monday - to which they will know how Leicester did on Sunday. If Leicester draw or slip up it will be all systems go for Spuds.

My Rival doesn't have Aguero and will most likelyy captain Kane, I think I'll stick with him on the reasons I just mention + the rival situation

My team for this GW is Mignolet, Lovren, Gabriel, PVA, Coutinho, Sanchez, Iwobi, KDB, Kane, Aguero.

Non-players are Fosu-Mensah, Payet and Reid. Plus Darlow.

I've used my FT. Thinking of swapping Fosu-Mensah or Gabriel (benched?) for a Spurs defender. I have £1m ITB.

    Thoughts please??

    KDB > Ali for a -4?

Rivals in mini league have him so would be a blocking move... Slightly scared he could hurt me!

Hi all. Any thoughts on my team/transfers much appreciated.

    Darlow
    Bellerin Gabriel Sakho Fuchs
    Sanchez KDB Alli Mahrez
    Aguero Mitrovic

Bench (all blank): Robles Delaney Payet Martial
    1 FT 1.3m ITB

I’m 30 points ahead of ML rival, who has Kane and Toby so looking to cover at least one of those. My ideal transfer would have been Mitrovic & Martial -> Kane & Defoe but I’m 0.3m short for that.

    A) Martial & Bellerin -> Kane & Rose (losing Bellerin not ideal, but rival doesn’t have him and provides cover for Spurs defence)
    B) Martial & Mahrez -> Kane & King/5.1m mid (Reluctant to lose Mahrez this week though)
    C) Martial & Payet -> Kane & Milner/7.1m mid (Gives 13 player protection for GW35 rotation with Gabriel/Sakho/KDB/Aguero/Mitrovic all risks to some extent, but likely to want Payet back for GW37)
    D) Hold transfer or just bring in Rose for e.g. Delaney

    Cheers.

Hey guys is it worth a hit to field a goalkeeper next GW ? Or would sticking with 10 out field players and no keeper be better ?
