Rate My Wildcard Team Surgery – Gameweek 36

With another set of double fixtures looming in Gameweek 37 many in the Fantasy Football Scout community who have their second Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Wildcard intact are looking to use this Chip during Gameweek 36. As two Chips cannot be used in the same Gameweek, this tactic will enable them to use their Bench Boost or Triple Captaincy chips when the double fixtures take place.

This article will showcase the thoughts of a member of the community on their Wildcard and hopefully some of their key issues will mirror your own.

Feel free to use this article thread to put forward your Wildcard team and to help others with their Wildcard-related issues. Even if you have already used your Wildcard, this article should prove useful as you look to secure the best double Gameweek options.

Here’s Lateriser12 to go through his Gameweek 36 Wildcard plans

Wildcard Team

De Gea, Gomes
Cresswell, van Aanholt, Smalling, Bellerin, Jagielka
Hazard, Sanchez, Payet, Lanzini, Alli
Kane, Sturridge, Defoe

Strategy

My Wildcard team is set up to use my bench boost in Gameweek 37, with a view to securing good players with two fixtures as well as key single Gameweek players. Harry Kane, Alexis Sanchez, Dele Alli and Hector Bellerin all play just once but nevertheless look to be valuable assets. With an abundance of striker options and Champion League exertions to distract him I’m reluctantly saying goodbye to Sergio Aguero. Meanwhile, Europa league rotation is a factor in handing Roberto Firmino his redundancy papers.

Key issues

Single Cream

Is starting off with four single Gameweekers too many? Should I be looking to focus on more double Gameweek players? Or has Gameweek 34’s experience taught us that swerving good, in-form single Gameweekers can prove costly?

Ditching Firmino and Aguero

These two have been my favorite players this season. Having jumped on Firmino very early and having Triple Captained Aguero for Gameweek 34, I have a strong affinity to both. But not being assured of Firmino’s minutes and Aguero’s somewhat difficult fixtures makes me want to go for Jermain Defoe instead who also acts as a great enabler. Daniel Sturridge seems like a prime captaincy candidate as well. Should I compromise and keep one of Firmino and Aguero or am  right to focus on more secure double Gameweek options.

Between the Sticks

In goal I’ll play Heurelho Gomes in Gameweek 36 and David De Gea in Gameweek 38. But are these the two best goalkeepers for the bench-boosted double Gameweek?

Hector’s House

Bellerin has retained his place due to strong fixtures for the run-in, with Norwich and Aston Villa taking on Arsenal either side of the double Gameweek. But are there better options? Are there any double Gameweek teams worth doubling up in defence, aside from Manchester United?

Bargain Hunting

With the above team I currently have 0.9m in the bank. Should I consider using that to improve on my current bargain basement candidates Gomes, Phil Jagielka, Manuel Lanzini and Alli. For example, is Troy Deeney a viable option, against an already relegated Villa side and now without the FA Cup to distract him?

    Thanks for posting.

    I've already used by wildcard and bench boost but still find this really useful in terms of key DGWK targets and who to place the TC on.

    I think you are right to stick with some quality single gameweekers and be wary of rotation. Both were key lessons learned from GWK 34.

    I also think you've got the right mix of coverage. For me my main choices are either Andy Carroll or Defoe. And which Chelsea midfielder. I think Hazard may be a little pricey for me but Fabregas and Pedro could be the ones to do well over GWK 37.

    For you perhaps consider Fabregas as an alternative to Hazard and with that spare 2m see if that really benefits elsewhere.

      I've got all the big ones. A key thought for me currently is Caroll + Firmino vs Sturridge + Lanzini

        Exactly what I was going to propose. Thinking Carroll will outscore Lanzini by a bigger margin than Sturridge will Firmino. I'd go with Carroll + Firmino

        Carroll is my current favourite over Defoe. Sunderland are not scoring much at home, while Carroll is having goal pie for breakfast, lunch and dinner...even his cheese course afterwards is made up of gorgangoala.

        I think he'll rotate with Watmore a little. Also alot of running but no goals or assists. Personally I'd look elsewhere.

        With 5 defenders you should be able to amply cover both gw36 and gw38 without having to pick single gameweekers.

          Bellerin is the only SGWer i have. I love him too.

          Got him really cheap too.

          Its him or Azpi i think. or maybe Rose.

              I wouldn't be surprised to see City and Arsenal play out a "convenient" 0-0 draw which would see them both guarantee top four provided they win their other two games.

          I'm not so sure in this case. I'd fancy Bellerin to fetch at least 10 points over 36, 37 and 38 - and that's being conservative. can I pick 5 DGW37ers who will do the same? It's not easy.

          Agree with this. Bellerin and a Spurs defender is not necessary as there are ample cover from favourable matchups in gw36 and gw38. Spurs are facing a London derby against Chelsea in 36 already. I wouldn't fancy a cleanie.

          Watford face Villa, Everton face Bournemouth, Sunderland face Stoke, and West Ham face West Brom. These are good covers in 36 with a double in 37.

    D:Coutinho

    Lateriser- doesn't Thursday factor into your Firminio / Sturridge decision? And that would completely change the look of your team. Or are you sold on Sturridge and think that Thursday is not going to be a good yardstick anyway?

    Alternatively, you could go with neither (they both may well be rested at Swansea) and then bring one (or even both for a hit) in for the DGW.

    I like it. It is incredibly similar to mine.
    But not a fan of Jagielka at all. Regardless of his doubles. I'd go either for a SGW player like walker/rose. Or go for Bassong like I am.

    And Hazard is a good shout. I'll be going for Fabregas personally due to current form.

    I think it's a mistake going without Firmino. he's still going to start games IMO, as is Sturridge.

    You have the right mix of single and double players. Definitely don't want to go OTT with the doubles. Lesson has been learnt from GW34

    GOMES. DDG.
    SAMLLING. PVA. CRESSWELL. BASSONG. Bellerin.

        Carroll is showing much better stats than Defoe. It's as simple as that for me. I prefer West Ham as an attacking unit than Sunderland's.
        Khazri doesn't do it for me either.

        Bassong - he is perhaps a silly move. I have gone for him just for that extra bench boost DGW outcome.

        Thanks for the feedback, here's my thinking:

        Townsend has Palace and then Villa and then I will probably transfer him out for GW38. Newcastle need the points!

        Bringing Carroll in would mean Triple West Ham which I don't really want to do. Prefer to have Payet.

        Would you take out Bellerin or Toby??? Not sure I would take them out for, say, an Everton or Chelsea def?

          Hmm, I think it's a no brainer to triple up on WHU players. I'm not suggesting dropping Payet, I'm suggesting Lanzini instead of Townsend or Carrol for Martial.

          And if you want to have Bellerin or Toby then it has to be Bellerin with those 36 and 38 fixtures. I'm doubling on MUN defence with Smalling so he is my prefered change for Toby 🙂

      If you are not on WC don't ask here, ask at normal articles. If you are on WC you are bad manager.

    If I were on a WC/BB….

    Gomes, Ruddy
    Smalling, Jagielka, Reid, Cresswell, PVA
    Payet, Firmino, Sanchez, Alli, Brady
    Lukaku, Deeney, Defoe

    £10m itb. 2FTs in gw38 to bring in Kane and Aguero for Lukaku and Deeney/Defoe in gw38. Alternatively Ozil in for Firmino if it appears he’ll get rested ahead of the Europa Final.

    GW36:
    Gomes {AVL}
    Jagielka {BOU}, Cresswell {wba}, PVA {sto}
    Payet {wba}, Firmino {swa}, Sanchez © {NOR}, Alli {che}
    Lukaku {BOU}, Deeney {AVL}, Defoe {sto}

    Ruddy {ars} || Reid {wba}, Smalling {LEI}, Brady {ars}

    GW37, BB:
    Gomes {liv, nor}, Ruddy {MUN, WAT}
    Smalling {nor, whm}, Jagielka {lei, sun}, Reid {SWA, MUN}, Cresswell {SWA, MUN}, PVA {CHE, EVE}
    Payet {SWA, MUN} ©, Firmino {WAT, CHE}, Sanchez {mci}, Alli {SOT}, Brady {MUN, WAT}
    Lukaku {lei, sun}, Deeney {liv, nor}, Defoe {CHE, EVE}

    GW38:
    Gomes {SUN}
    Smalling {BOU}, Jagielka {NOR}, Cresswell {sto}
    Sanchez © {AVL}, Firmino {wba}, Payet {sto}, Alli {new}
    Aguero {swa}, Kane {new}, Lukaku {NOR}

    Ruddy {eve} || Brady {eve}, PVA {sun}, Reid {sto}

    Got WC left, but no other chips.

    My plan was to wait for 37 to use it, but what would you do?

    De Gea

    Moreno Dawson Bellerin

    Firmino Ozil Mane Alli

    Kane Aguero Sturridge

    Bench: Forster Iwobi Fuchs Delaney

    My current WC GW36 team (though admittedly haven't given this too much though yet):

    Mignolet Gomes
    Cresswell Bassong Smalling PVA Ivanovic
    Payet Lanzini Firmino Sanchez Brady
    Lukaku Defoe Sturridge

      Mignolet. Never go there with Ward and the crap defence.

      Ivan - Plays in the middle. Too expensive a punt (although Terry could change this)

      Rest looks mint.

    Hazard will never work well. I would have Fabregas.

    Jagielka is a bad option considering Lei and Sun to have something fighting for.

    Fuchs will outscore Jagielka imo.

    Current WC team:

    Mannonne, Gomes
    Smalling, Cresswell, PVA, Moreno, Olsson
    Payet, Sanchez, Lanzini, Firmino, Alli
    Sturridge, Lukaku, Deeney

    7.1m itb 😀

    I think only Payet, Sanchez, PVA and Cresswell are nailed in my team. Everybody else may be changed.

    I think Firmino is much more likely to start than Sturridge with Klopp starting Firmino in all the games since his return from injury. Getting rid of Aguero frees up a lot of cash as well, but I'm reluctant to lose a player who can turn it on at any moment

    Top stuff LR 🙂

    Any consideration given to blocking ML rivals who don't have chips left?

    I really want to keep Kane, Aguero, Mahrez, Bellerin and (to a lesser extent) a LEI def in my WC team in case they perform well over 36 and 37.

    First draft with 0.3 ITB

    de Gea - Ruddy
    Bellerín - PVA - Simpson - Jagielka - Reid
    Alli - Brady - Mahrez - Payet - Sanchez
    Lukaku - Kane - Agüero
