Team of the Season – Hector Bellerin

After establishing himself as Arsenal’s first-choice right-back towards the end of 2014/15, Hector Bellerin further enhanced his burgeoning reputation with a series of eye-catching displays at both ends of the pitch. The young Spaniard’s raids down the right culminated in his inclusion in the PFA Team of the Year and saw him rise to top spot in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender standings in the final Gameweek of the season.

THE STATISTICS

While Arsene Wenger’s side got off to a slow start, it quickly became clear their defence was going to be one of the more reliable for Fantasy managers to lean on, picking up an impressive six clean sheets between Gameweeks 3 and 11. Bellerin also registered two assists over this period, and subsequently saw his price rise from 5.5 to 5.9 in FPL.

A further 11 shut-outs over the next 25 matches ensured Bellerin remained one of the leading options for our five-man backlines throughout the season, with the Barcelona youth product also adding a further goal and three assists in terms of attacking returns.

FPL bosses were spoilt for choice from the Arsenal rearguard, with Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal also regular starters in a backline that had racked up an impressive 18 clean sheets. Indeed, the trio sit in three of the top four defender spots in FPL, with Bellerin (172) bettering both Koscielny (153) and Monreal (152) at the summit.

In terms of bonus points, Bellerin managed to register a reasonable 18, ranking him joint-fourth among defenders along with team-mate Koscielny. The latter held the edge in terms of goal threat, though, and outscored his team-mate by four to one.

THE PROSPECTS

Having started 36 league outings this season, Bellerin’s guaranteed pitch time and attacking potential will certainly earn him a price hike for next season. After beginning last year at 5.5 to Koscielny’s 6.0, he now looks set to mirror the Frenchman’s valuation next time out and with the calming influence of Petr Cech behind them, there could even be a rise to 6.5 on the cards.

Bellerin appears to have little competition for the right-back spot, with Mathieu Debuchy looking to have no future at the club after being loaned out to Bordeaux in January, while Calum Chambers seems no more than back-up. Koscielny and Monreal seem as similarly nailed-on and there’d be no surprise if all three were afforded the same price tag for 2016/17.

Having only kept 13 clean sheets during the 2014/15 season, the addition of Petr Cech has certainly had the desired effect on the Gunners backline, and the likelihood is that their defensive unit will remain one of the more productive on offer for Fantasy managers heading into next season. Indeed, Arsenal’s 18 clean sheets this term is more than any other side, though United could equal that tally if they keep out Bournemouth tonight

Certainly, from a value perspective, we’d ideally hope for the battle between Gabriel and Per Mertesacker to be resolved next season. The pair started 18 and 24 league matches respectively last time out and will therefore be priced cheaper than the above-mentioned trio – if either one can secure the role next to Koscielny, the Gunners’ increased resilience would considerably boost their Fantasy appeal.

For those Fantasy managers keen to find a position for at least one premium defender at the start of next season, Bellerin’s attacking potential could yet justify a premium price tag. In the final third, he sits first amongst defenders for both touches and passes completed and takes second place for passes received. Given that he surprisingly managed only 23 chances created and three shots on target (from 13 attempts), it’s arguable that there is plenty of scope for further improvement next time around.

Soooo dissapointed cuz no matter how much I tried to get back on track I couldn't recover from not having Mahrez and few of those big guns for the first 2 or 3 Gw's... He was on course to succeed just that with Chelsea 😉

Ah no he'd manage to consolidate a top half finish with United, albeit even more defensively than LvG.. At least there'd be slightly less rotation.

I think LvG would make United successful with time, but the football he wants to play makes you want to scratch your eyes out with pin. I'm all for Mourinho. I reckon he's done some personal growth during his absence.

"I have learned how to live without the happiness of winning matches... I think I am a better manager because I have accumulated experiences. I learn with all these experiences."

Quote from 2015, but shows his willingness to adapt and learn. Very important in my eyes. Stubbornness is a dangerous thing, LvG still doesn't seem to have learned that...

Mourinho knows he will have to tow the line a little more to a certain extent if he comes to United but don't want him changing too much... Wenger must be sick to his stomach at the thought of him coming back lolol

Tad unfortunate with injuries tbf. I like that his approach is based on logic, stats and progressive experimentation. United need someone a bit more long term though, and is willing to allow some creative flair now and again.

Personally I think the amount of money he has wasted is quite scandalous - I appreciate it's the clubs money to spend how they want, but in the last 2 years they have spent more on players than Leicester have in their entire history.

Maybe so but other teams can claim the same and it's part of the game and why huge sums of money are spent to beef up the squad.. really no excuse for us being nearly bottom of the league for chances created and shots.. truly sickening statistics

Yet goal conversion was generally high, they became more efficient with shooting. I think that was a deliberate tactic, not to take overly ambitious shots. Dunno though, I'm speculating.

Lvg has been awhful and it would only get worse!

Yes he was unfortunate with injuries especially with shaw as he was a huge miss but it was his fault we didn't have the numbers to cover because he depleted the size of the squad too much.

The last game against Norwich tells you all you need to know about him. Utd go 1 nil up against Norwich and he brings on a holding midfielder to see the game out against bloody Norwich!

Yeah - I wouldn't trust any old source but following decent journalists is a good start - you get used to who is good and who isn't. They almost always break it before Sky do.

Sky haven't really said anything new today - we already knew Mourinho wanted it. I don't believe we've told him it's yours if he goes, that makes absolutely no sense - unless we're worried he's been approached elsewhere

But to say "You can have the job if we get rid of LvG" is just crazy. Just how desperate is Mourinho to manage us? That statement doesn't show we value him at all, at least not above LvG.

    Romania 2; England 3; Spain 3; Wales 4; Belgium 5; Austria 5; Croatia 5; Russia 5; Ukraine 5; Portugal 5; Albania 5; Iceland 6; Italy 7; Switzerland 8; Republic of Ireland 8; Slovakia 8; Northern Ireland 8; Germany 9; Turkey 9; Poland 10; Hungary 10; Sweden 12 ;Czech Republic 14

I know these can be slightly skewed if Gibralter or San Marino are in your Qualifying group but certainly useful. France vs Romania may not be as fruitful as many think. Whereas Spain vs Czech Republic could be a match to load up on your Spain attackers. Ronaldo vs Lewandowski etc

I know man, and it is helpful. And I'm trying to be helpful too 🙂

I've lately been trying to fit Lewandowski into my team on the basis of Poland's qualifying goals. The end of Mikess' post reminded me that Gibraltar were in their group and it prompted me to look into it. Not so keen on him now.

Me neither. Not interested at all. They struggled to score in a qualifying group with Armenia, Albania and Serbia so I don't see them turning that around against Austria and Hungary.

Its such a shame how spurs season fizzled out, it was well on course to be their best ever season but they appeared to give up after the title was gone and nothing to play for.... consequence of a young team I guess.....

Plus Chelsea + Southampton were both very motivated to beat Spurs.. That was a huge game for the Saints.

Newcastle was a freak result courtesy of GW38 madness.

Townsend ripped Spurs apart and taught Levy/Pochettino a lesson, he's a better player than Lamela. Was quite predictable.

As for Spurs, they threw away the league when Pochettino basically said "we're not good enough to beat Dortmund" before a ball had been kicked and threw the EL away. A tough manager would have used it as an opportunity to teach his players what it means to handle 2 competitions. That's what Mourinho would have done.

Instead he threw the EL and let his players have an easy ride. You don't build a winning mentality that way. And what are Spurs going to do with the CL next season? Will they see last-16 as a trophy, like Arsenal do? Probably.

Spurs could be in the EL final tomorrow. Instead they finished 3rd in the PL and embarrassed themselves.

Good points. It was predictable that Newcastle would beat them (I sold Kane and played two Newcastle players) but I wasn't expecting them to score 5.

Spurs definitely shouldn't have thrown the game v Dortmund, even if he did think it would give them the edge in the league, it was a ridiculous decision.

I still rate the work Poch has been doing there, but he has made a few mistakes no doubt.

Reaction to FPL pricing is always the same - some think it's too cheap, some think it's too harsh and eventually the true bargains and worthwhile heavy hitters emerge and the pricing turns out to be about right. Been the same for as long as I can remember.

That's one of the most mysterious parts of the riddle. Stick/twist with manual substitutions is a great format for short tournaments but there's barely any point to it when you only have 4 subs and the budget/pricing they've given us is very restrictive. It's neither fish nor fowl (as Doos might say), with half of one game format glued onto half of another game format.

Any German team aficionados on here? Götze has been one of the first names in my team but is there a chance he isn't actually nailed on? He played in all but one of the qualifiers and scored a few but I'm seeing him omitted from some predicted lineups.

Anyone else extremely confused by this?

    "Choosing Your Starting XI
From your 15-player squad, select 11 players before the Matchday deadline.
All your points for the Matchday will be scored by these 11 players; if one or more doesn't play then they may be automatically substituted with the players on the bench."

    "3. Manage team
Your team will be locked only when the first match of the day starts, so you can make any changes you need to your team until the scheduled start of the match – you can transfer/substitute players depending whether it's a transfer or substitution period.

You can make unlimited transfers before the first game of the tournament and knockout stage. However, during the tournament you will have limited number of transfers.

The substitution period will be available between gamedays where you can replace a starting XI player with a bench player."

    Conflicting information.
