The Fantasy Football Scout Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Not sure about the defence and your heavily relying on the attack to make up for it which is risky. Not sure about having both Vardy and Mahrez but good ideas

it´s your intention to play 4-3-3?
if you change KDB -> Hazard you can do Capoe/Fletcher -> Bojan/Bolasie

i'd do it Capoe -> Bolasie

my plan was probably to get in hazard week 2, not feeling too hopeful of Chelsea opening game against W Ham.

            Is Pieters likely to start?

I am also thinking maybe of a 343 formation, but undecided yet

Any reason why you are doubling up on Arsenal at the back? You'll also hit the no-Aguero brigade with that one, which is risky, but might just work out.

I would downgrade one of Giroud or Lukaku to a more value proposition up forward, and use the cash the improve your 3rd/4th mid; and also save some cash at the back.

      1. Tegaako

First of all i doubled on arsenal cus of how many points they both rack up. Bellerin and kos racked up a tota score of 325 points so that could really help. But if you think its not good, i will check other options. 2ndly i dont like the idea of just 2 strikers and 1 mediocre 1 because it puts too much hope on 2 of them meaning that if i were to get aguero and kane per say and den aguero gets injured in the 12th minute i have to rely on my 3rd stiker who is mediocre and may not even be played that day by his manager but the way i set up this squad is that because im using 3 strikers in which the team solely rely on, even if Giroud doesnt play for arsenal say he's been having a goal drought, and wenger decides to bench him, surely kane and lukaku still play cud their teams rely on them extremely. Im going to now change up those defenders to defenders who are 4.5m and then. Get a better midfielder. Do you think changing ross barkely for payet or ozil will make more sense. Amd lastly i dont understand this bonus points thing how does it work

You can get strikers that are nailed on to start for 6.5mill who will also score goals occasionally enough to warrant their posistion in the team as a facilitator for a stronger midfield etc.

    PLS RMT:

IF Benteke goes to Palace this is my team:

    Foster / Jaku

Azpilicueta / Shaw / Van Aanholt / Friend / Souare

KDB / Hazard / Ayew / Townsend / De Roon

    Aguero / Benteke / Long

3-4-3 with threeway defensive rotation with the 2 premium defenders.

    Some concerns:
    1. Benteke to who IF not in Palace??
    2. Shaw or Walker?? Walkers price is tempting, but fixtures not so much until GW 4.
    3. Ayew or Tadic?
    4. Townsend or Deulefeu? (gut tells me he will explode this season)
    5. Long or Austin or other 6.5?

..If no Benteke in Palace I am thinking Azpi to Walker, Ayew to Deulefeu and Benteke to Costa!

    Appreciate all feedback 🙂

How likely is Tarkowski to play? I'm pretty sure consensus on here is that currently none of the 4.0s are nailed on. Brad Smith is 4.0 and may play more than him. your midfield looks good but I'd maybe swap Barkley out for Fabregas, Tadic or Ayew (plays as a striker)

The thinking is, because its hard to know which budget options are best; I can wait for the first few gws to rethink my squad while still having a strong core.

Its also easier imo to downgrade than upgrade which might need more hits.

My idea to balance my squad will be this:

Jakupovic is likely to replace the injured Mcgregor for Hul(longterm injury).
I can also bring Middlesbrough's Friend for either Amat or Tarkowki

Negredo if he's first option to start for Grabban

All these mean downgrading sb from mid.
I think Barkley's first half points were among the top so if koeman helps him to play well throughout the season could be a bargain at 7.5.
This now means downgrading Alli for maybe Bolasie?

Considering that's three subs, I can easily do that as the season progresses to watch Alli's form.

    Heaton - Foster
    Gabriel - Shaw - Morgan - Friend - Souare
    Tadic - Ayew - Ericksen - Barkley - Capoue
    Aguero - Ibra - Gray

Should I switch out Capoue for Fletcher because of fixtures?

    1. Samian

Capoue bombs forward more than Fletcher, so even with fixtures i'd say Capoue probably has the edge. Barkely is quite expensive and his form has been indifferent the last year. He's a great player, so I'd definitely monitor but for that price you could get Fabregas, who has been doing it for years. While he was also poor last year, I think he offers much better value than Barkely at this figure (look at his previous years stats / goals in comparison to Barkley)

Good team, needs minor tweaking is all. I'd swap Drinkwater for a £4.5 million and potentially use that cash elsewhere - maybe upgrading Tadic to Firmino?

Drinkwater is unlikely to have the same great season as the one he's just had as
      1. he will have European commitments
      2. all the other teams have strengthened better than Leicester.

Also, i'd monitor Brad Smith and how much gametime he gets for Bournemouth in pre-season. Just because he's moved and is cheap doesn't necessarily mean he will start!

        Thanx!
Started to look for a replacement for drinkwater just after I posted the team here. Tempted to go for Bojan (0.5 ITB)

Totally agree with you on the Smith input, and will monitor his pitchtime in pre-season.

    Foster (Jakupovic)
Shaw - Azpilecueta - (Kone - Souare - Friend - will rotate, playing twice each first 6 gameweeks)
Mkhitaryan - Ayew - Fabregas - Townsend (De Roon)
    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Long

I'm fairly comfortable with this. Toying with the idea of swapping out Townsend for Gradel and upgrading Long to Benteke (if he moves) or another £7.5 million striker. I'd just like opinions! Midfield seems great value to me but i'm aware it's slightly devoid of big hitters (hoping Mkhitaryan - Ayew - Fabregas over-perform their price tags)

yeh, it is tough. I'm purely paying that as he'll be playing damn-near up-front and scored against Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd, Tottenham, A Villa, Everton, Sunderland and Bournemouth last year. To me that means he can do it against anyone, and £7.5 seems good value, even if his first 8 is pretty tough.

I'd wait for Ulloa to have a move (potentially to Swansea ive heard). Doesn't seem that he will start regularly for Leicester. Also Redmond and Leko could struggle for minutes, I'd swap for players guaranteed more play time

    DDG / 4.0 bench fodder
    Morgan/Stones/Gabriel/Friend/Zuniga
    Ayew/Deulofeu/Hazard/Nolito/Capoue
    Kun/Gray/Costa

Jaku is the bench fodder that plays.
Zuniga has harsh fixtures. As does Capoue
Nolito=Silva alot to like good luck.

    Hello all,

Long time reader but first post! Love the friendly community so thought I'd join.

Would love someone to RMT and happy to rate back of course.

    GK: Foster, Heaton
DEF: Stones, Shaw, Walker, Friend, Paredes.
MID: Mkhi, Ayew, Townsend, Ozil, Capoue.
    FWD: Aguero, Costa, Wilson

    Thanks in advance 🙂

      That's way solid
      Paredes>Lenihan at 4.0
      Capoue>Fletcher
Wilson just doesn't have the fixtures to start. Long Negredo Gray
      Good luck to you.

Looks a really good team. Really good. But I'd downgrade a defender and upgrade your midfield or attack; specifically Capoue or Costa.

Ok ladies and gentlemen, please destroy my hours of hardwork -

    Foster/Jaku
    Shaw, Stones, Pieters, Friend, Fernandez
    Mahrez, Eriksen, Townsend, Mkhit, Capoue
    Aguero, Lukaku, Gray

0.5 in the bank to go from Mahrez to Haz if need be after Mahrez has torn the Hull reserves a new coal hole in gw1

Looks really good. I also have Aguero and Lukaku, but have gone for Wilson over Gray (might change mind on this, however).

Am not sold on Capoue, I think there's other midfielders with better starting fixtures who are more creative...If he's a bench warmer maybe swap him for someone like de Roon.

Fernandez I'd swap with a WBA player...good for rotation, and Pulis innit.

      Good team though

Love the Martial option. He scored 12 last year and think he'll do better this year. Maybe Smith at Bourbemouth for Wasi at £4M?

Thanks! Yeah I really think Martial will do well this year. With Shaw as left back and potentially Pogba on left side of mid, with Rooney, Ibra/Rashford and Miki in attack...looks like he'll get goals and assists.

Good tip for Smith instead of Wasi. I'm also thinking of swapping Souare for Mee.

        Thanks again

Definitely sold on Martial...I thought he was absolutely class last season, especially in the second half of the season. He tore apart anyone he played on the wing and he can cut inside and score - people seem to have forgotten his FA Cup Final goal - that was world class. And he's 20. And this year he's playing in a better squad with a lot more speed and clinical finishing last year.

Yeah, Wasi is a dilemma. He's a high scoring, cheap defender though. The thing about him potentially only playing one game is an issue though.

I'm also torn on Gray vs Wilson.

Luckily for MU players, we can get a better look at in the Charity Shield..
Gray seems doing good in pre-seasons.. But Wilson's form before his injury last season is great!
I'm leaning towards Wilson for his EPL experience..

Looks good! I might be wrong this year, but Kane always starts slowly and he looked knackered at Euros. Maybe start with a cheaper striker (there's loads who have good starting fixtures) and then get Kane in later when he hits form.

I'd use the extra money to bolder your mid. but Mee/Evans rotation looks good...I had Evans/Souare, but you might have convinced me to change it...

West Brom, Boro, West Brom, Spurs, Everton, Leicester, Palace and Man City...

I considered Kane but I'm just put off by how slow he's been to start seasons, plus how exhausted he looked at Euros.

I mean...just look at those teams and consider your budget. There's one obviously great striker at WBA, one two footed, much cheaper alternative to Kane at Spurs, Lukaku at Everton is cheaper. Have a look!

    Hi!

    DDG (Jakupovich)
Dann - Rose - FunesMori (Friend, Fernandes)
Mkhitaryan - Fabregas - Alli - Coutinho (Tore)
    Costa - Giroud - Long
    !!! 1.0m left

The things I'm not sure in:
    1) Fabregas - not sure if he's planned to participate in starting XI. Not sure who to use instead of him
    2) Mkhitaryan to Hazard upgrade?
    3) Long - There are various of pretty good 6.5-7.0 forwards: Deeney, Gray or even Carroll

So far City look solid at the back and it looks like they've gone with 3 at the back - 3421 in the first half and 3 at the back at the start of the second - 343 / 352

    High pressing game too

    Last season's GW1 Dream Team:

    Adrian
    Kompany, Gomez, Delaney, Amavi
    Toure, Albrighton, Mahrez, Cabaye, Ayez
    Kone

No goals for Aguero, Kane, Giroud, Hazard, Sanchez etc.
Only five out of twenty teams had clean sheets.
Only two home wins out of the ten matches.
    Five away wins.
Of the promoted sides, only Watford claimed a point (2-2 away at Everton).

Food for thought. All that research and planning and as I recall I ended up with 21 points. GW2 was just as random - not a single Arsenal, Spurs, Man United or Chelsea player in the Dream Team for that week either.

In conclusion, what a lottery - why do we put ourselves through it?!

2013/14 had four home wins. Villa stuffed Arsenal, but a bit more normality - wins for Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Spurs, Man United. Goals for Van Persie and Aguero (x2), Sturridge, Giroud, Lampard, Silva.

214/15 only TWO home wins. Only four teams got clean sheets - Man City, Spurs, Hull and Villa. Of the high-price players, Rooney, Sturridge and Aguero scored, but no goals for Sanchez, Hazard, Kane, Lukaku, Giroud etc. And no clean sheets for Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool.

In conclusion, Man City start well, Arsenal don't (at either end).
Everton have drawn the last three openers 2-2.
        Very few home wins.
Aguero generally starts as he means to go on. Sturridge and Rooney also appear to start seasons well.
Leicester will probably score AND concede.
Man City defence starts well, especially if Kompany is fit.

    Hello lads,
I would love to get some feedback on my team:

    Heaton - Foster
Shaw- Friend- Evans - Souare - Taylor
KDB - Willian - Lamela - Sigurdsson - de Roon
    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Wickham

thinking was to put augero and Ibra in so that downgrading is easily possible.

do you think willian and lamela are good options to get myself some chelsea/ Spurs attack? and is KDB & augero too much city exposure?

as much as I like Arsenal, their first 2 games against Liverpool and Leicester won't likely end in CS..
thus, Bellerin is too expensive, so does Walker..
both Manchester teams have a relative better fixtures

with ur front 8, u're going to bench Wilson all the time (if so, change to cheaper ones) or rotates with Townsend?

    Hi all,

    Hennessey-Valdes
    Morgan-Fernandez-Ivanovic-Van Dijk-Walker
    Mahrez-Eriksen-Ayew-Redmond-Fletcher
    Giroud-Agüero-Long

Maybe downgrade Giroud to Gray/Wilson/Negredo or Ighalo and also downgrade Walker to Friend and upgrade Redmond to Payet or another 9.5m attacking midfielder.

    Foster - 4.0
    Walker - Shaw - Friend - McAuley - 4.0
    Mahrez - Mkhit - Tadic - Ayew - 4.5
    Aguero - Vardy - Rhodes

The system Karanka plays doesn't really allow for 2 strikers, and Negredo will be number one, Rhodes will be more of an impact sub
