The Fantasy Football Scout Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

I have a starting midfield of Arnautovic, Ayew and Erikssen. I have 8 million to spend on another starter and I am torn between Tadic or Wijnaldum. Who do you think I should go for? Or is there a better alternative?

So what you guys think of this "500th setup"? I will probably WC GW4 or so, so keep that in mind. Hope to be getting close to a "final" team.

    Foster | Pickford
    Friend | Shaw | Souaré | Azpilicueta | Fernández
    Mahrez | Ayew | Tadic | Deulofeu | Fletcher
    Ibrahimovic | Agüero | Negredo

Let me know any thoughts please, positive and negative. Or just to share thoughts a bit.

I was thinking of downgrading a 4.5 defender to paredes and leave 0.5m in bank. So i might be able to get hazard in gw2 for mahrez if he shows some skills gw1.

Pickford might change to Jakupovic... both 4.0m

      Thoughts?

since registering, i have changed my team quite a lot, here it is at the moment, please comment on it

    de gea

    stones shaw walker (peredes, smith)

    coutinho, KDB, eriksen, hazard (hojberg)

    long, origi, zlatan

i probably shouldn't have two LFC attackers, given they have a hardish start and lots of options, i also believe MANE, to be the main man, but coutinho is liverpool's best player by a mile and origi is cheap given he will probably get the most minutes.

i was hoping stones will go to city, if not he may need changing as he doesn't contribute too much offensively and everton haven't improved much this summer.

i have no MiTB but could downgrade de gea for butland and then i have in mind to get in deeney or ighalo afte rtheir tough games are otu of the way.

    thoughts?

Will Origi play that much? I also plan to get Coutinho later on.

I'm also worried about Stones. Maybe try Morgan otherwise?

      1. mikeOXmaul
        • 7 Years

i believe so, i think origi will get the most minutes up top for us, but at worst he will be second choice, i expect a good season from him. he played well last season and has looked good in pre season. he is a klopp player, he is rapid, presses and tries hard, sturridge is lazier, isnt a team player, injury prone and hasn't looked the same yet since his injuries. but perhaps side with caution for the first week or two, especially since we start with arsenal away. however, last season origi scored 5 goals in 670 minutes, kane averaged 5 goals every 672 minutes.

if zlatan doesn't cut it i will save around 3 mil by selling him and that can then be used on upgrading long and/or origi, my midfield is stacked and i can always pick up some money downgrading a star name for an early pace setter. i have two creative defenders who are both 5.5m and besides a few, can be switched for basically anyone without spending any more. i rate van dijk as a beast, dann had a good season last year, plenty of room for maneuver for me.

i am staying well clear of leicester, i think they will be a shadow of last season, kante no longer protecting the back four, i never rated their CBs either, last year was just a one off and i can see them finishing anywhere from 8th to 14th.

i agree with other comment, i don't like having a creative mid from the same team as your striker. don't see the value in spending 1/4 of your budget on two strikers, i doubt zlatan will be wildly outscoring a whole bunch of cheaper strikers.

maybe it's me but i prefer the cheapest bench possible, but if you want both i would ship out the expensive mikky t, would look at saving an extra 1m with eriksen, so then you can do this:

      Heaton
      Shaw, Morgan, Friend
      Ibe, Hazard, ERIKSEN, Townsend
      Gray, Aguero, Zlatan

a 4.0m gk two 4m defs and a 4.5m mid, this team leaves you 2.5mil for upgrades! or ship out Zlatan as well for a 9m striekr and you have 5mil spare.

So tell me, why is Valencia getting so overlooked in people's squads in favour of Shaw? He got 3 assists yesterday from right back, I would think he is ahead of Darmian in the pecking order due to this and can even possibly be played as a winger? Am I missing something?

    1. Scoop_
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 9 months ago

Shaw was great for Southampton and for Man U in FPL before he got injured, big big numbers. Valencia is a very un-Mourinho RB and hasn't played regular since Ferguson used him as a RM. If he was cheaper than other Man U defenders he'd be worth a punt but for the same it's a risk.

      1. mormank
        • 7 Years

So do you think Darmian willl start at RB mostly? He is Valencia's only competition for RB. I had Shaw in my team and then I remembered Valencia after he got 3 assists the other day. He is very tempting. I also had Shaw from the start of last season till his injury fwiw but can't help but think Valencia is capable of double points hauls if he plays.

Still at the tinkering stage but any opinions are welcome -

    Butland;
    Fuchs, Williams, Friend;
    Silva, Mkhitaryan, Ayew, Fischer;
    Aguero, Gray, Ibrahimovic

    Pickford, Hojberg, Daniels, Paredes.

    1. Principito

Silva got a lot to prove for his 9.0, would go for more balance and stronger bench for rotations.

    De Gea | Foster
    Shaw | Sagna | Stones | McAuley | Taylor
    Payet | Sigurdsson | Townsend | Kante | Ibe
    Aguero | Zlatan | Long

Am I strong enough in midfield?

    Hart (Nordfeldt)
    Shaw Morgan Walker (Lovren, Paredes)
    Hazard Zaha Eriksen Downing (Can)
    Kun Kane Giroud

Lovren - Morgan offers great rotation first 10 GW.

Should the lack of any Man City players be a worrying prospect?
I cant justify pitting Aguero in(just took him out!) with a frontline of Ibra-Lukaku-Batshuayi, and have already picked my big hitters as far as mids are concerned, with Hazard-Mkhitaryan in place.

Well it's certainly very risky but not stupid. Someone like Hazard could regain his form and produce plenty of points whilst Aguero could be injured by gw3. I would be willing to bet that the highest point scoring team for gw1 will have no Aguero in it, excluding teams that used their chips of course.
