Moving Target – Gaston Ramirez

Last week, Middlesbrough finally confirmed the transfer of midfielder Gaston Ramirez on a free transfer after being released by Southampton. The 25-year-old has signed a three-year contract at the Riverside, where he spent a successful loan spell last season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, ‘Boro manager Aitor Karanka expressed his delight at securing the Uruguayan on a permanent basis:

“It’s good to have him with us again. He was a key player last season and we both knew we wanted to work together again. It’s taken time, but it’s good to have him here. It’s good for the team, for the club, and for him. So we’re all pleased.”

The History

Starting off his youth career at Penarol in Uruguay, Ramirez made his professional debut for the club in 2009 at the age of 18. He went on to make 42 league appearances, scoring eight goals, before securing a move to Italian side Bologna in August 2010 for a fee of € 2.5 million.

Ramirez enjoyed a reasonably successful first campaign in Italy, bagging four goals and two assists in 25 league matches, before really finding his feet during the 2011/12 campaign, where he netted eight times and provided five assists in 33 league appearances.

Those performances persuaded Southampton to pay a reported £12 million for his services in August 2012, but he struggled for consistency during his first season in England, despite scoring five goals and bagging three assists in 26 league appearances.

The midfielder spent much of the 2013/14 season on the fringes of the Southampton side under Mauricio Pochettino, before moving to Hull City on a season-long loan in September 2014. He once again struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, though, totalling 23 league appearances for the Tigers, scoring just one Premier League goal.

In January, Ramirez moved to Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the 2015/16 campaign, and proved to be a pivotal figure as ‘Boro secured promotion back to the Premier League, scoring seven goals and registering four assists in 18 league matches.

Having played 13 times for Uruguay Under 20s, scoring three goals, Ramirez made his senior debut against Indonesia in October 2010. He also represented his country in the London 2012 football tournament and the 2014 World Cup, and currently has 38 caps to his name, although he has yet to score for his country.

The Prospects

During his loan spell with ‘Boro last season, Ramirez primarily featured in the number ten role in Karanka’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. While the Spanish boss is known to rotate his attacking options, fellow new signing Viktor Fischer appears likely to occupy one of the wide berths, with the likes of Albert Adomah, Stewart Downing and Cristhian Stuani battling for the other wide position.

Ramirez did only come on as a substitute in three of his 18 league outings for ‘Boro last season, though, suggesting he could be the attacking midfielder least prone to rotation.

Looking at last season’s underlying statistics, Ramirez averaged a shot every 32.4 minutes, better than Stuani (36.6), Adomah (39.9) and Downing (48.2), although Fischer did manage a shot every 29 minutes playing for Ajax. Assessing the creativity of the players last season, Ramirez once again led the way, averaging a key pass every 33.2 minutes, better than Downing (48.2), Adomah (50.2) and Stuani (124.6), while Fischer only created a chance every 62.7 minutes playing in the Eredivisie.

With Fischer, Downing and Adomah all valued at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), it’s likely Ramirez will be priced the same or 6.0 at a push. Certainly, with such favourable opening fixtures (STO, sun, wba, CPL), Ramirez, like many of ‘Boro’s Fantasy assets, look worthy of consideration as budget options for our initial 15-man squads.

The fact that Karanka’s men only scored 63 goals in the Championship last term, ranking them eighth in the division, may bring a sense of caution in backing ‘Boro attackers from the off, though. Nonetheless, their attack has been boosted by the arrival of former Man City striker Alberto Negredo, who netted a debut goal for the Teeside team at the weekend after an effort from Ramirez cannoned back off the post.

Priced at 6.5, Negredo’s instant impact has propelled him onto many radars as a cheap third striker option, though if Ramirez comes in at 5.5, he looks a decent budget midfield option for the opening weeks of the season. Given that he’s familiar with both the Premier League and Karanka’s tactical system, the South American will be looking to finally prove himself after those disappointing spells in the top-flight at Southampton and Hull.

I don't even know if I'll go with him yet, but those fixtures are quite positive in my eyes.

Also, he was Burnley's main man last season. They are relying on him to score their goals.

Don't get me wrong, I will own him at some point and he could be this season's Ighalo/Deeney I reckon, but I will gladly give him the first 3 weeks to settle down.

agreed, their fixtures will considerably ease after they've faced the tougher sides, that's when i'll invest in gray, good underlying stats

lol, because he's playing in front of his own fans he'll score more? Swansea will trounce them gw1, hull has the potential for good returns for ag, and Watford with 3 at the back will keep a CS. rest of his fixtures arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Southampton.

Who is ignoring both Ibrahimovic & Kun?

My thinking is that by going for the premium midfield options playing right behind them (Mikhi & KDB), I will get to save 5.5M, and thus be able to fit in all of Payet, Kane & Lukaku into my team.

    Thoughts?

it makes sense bud, just cause everyone else will put Aguero in their team doesnt mean you need to, its a lot of money to invest when you could have 2 players to equal the same to still give you the same return. it comes down to choice and whether they all using their wild card early, if you pick the right team you should only need to use it when you want too.

I see how it works for people and the thinking behind it but it is not me.

      Downgrade feghouli to a 4.5
Downgrade Terry to a 4.5 and upgrade Paredes to a 4.5. Hopefully you can get a good 3 way rotation going
      Fabregas to willian
      Upgrade downing to Mirallas
Storms the .5 remaining as you like 😉

Downing and Feghouli rotate really well the first 6 rounds,
        I don't like to have a useless 5th mid

I prefer Fab for Willian, I think he is the most under valued player in the game currently

Everton midfield is a ?, will have to wait and see

Why are people knocking Liverpool players because of fixtures, yet taking a 2-week punt on Mahrez when one of his games is against Arsenal?

Just seems mad to me. Yes Liverpool's fixtures start off tough but it's not like they won't score goals. People are avoiding the defence of teams that play Liverpool, yet are also avoiding Liverpool attackers because of tough fixtures.

Something has to happen. Fair enough calling how the games will be a tough task, but to overlook Mane and Firmino from the start could be a missed differential. Not saying I'm going to, but I certainly wouldn't rule it out.

Leicester could come out playing defensive football and get 1-0 results, whereas Liverpool could come out attacking and put a few goals in from the start.

If Liverpool's starting form is better than Leicester's (which preseason has suggested) then fixtures mean nothing

I'm not denying this but see below. It's unclear WHO would get Liverpool's points. Mahrez very likely to be in the goals for Leicester. He was also very good and scored a beauty against Celtic in a reasonably competitive friendly. If Leicester were to score it seemed almost certain it was gonna come through him
Hard day this about the individual Liverpool assets

My concern with Liverpool is different - http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/13587939

Want to see who of Firmino/Mane is the best option before investing.

Preseason games will give us an idea of who will be allowed venture more forward from the midfield 3, etc.

I reckon Coutinho will be deeper because of his long shot ability

Unclear also who the best asset will turn out to be. We know how central Mahrez is to Leicester. It's more unclear who will be Liverpool's main source of points and best value for money could be any of mane, coutinho or firmino.

It's tough knowing which one to pick (out of Firm and Mane imo) but you're right - if I remember correctly they played their best attcking football in some of their hardest fixtures last season. I'll definitely start with one of them. They're gonna score a lot

Anybody concidering leaving some cash itb to begin with? Last years gw1 dream team cost about 92m ifnI remember correctly. It makes it easier to catch the bandwaggons.

          Foster 4.0
          Shaw Baines/Coleman 4.5/4.5/4.5
          Mahrez Cesc Ayew Deulofeu/Mirallas Bolasie
          Kun Rooney 4.5

I know there's a lot of scope for upgrades with the cash itb, but I just don't fancy anything right now and I'm trying something a little different as I usually start awfully anyway

Cheers. Tryings to get a good balance, I like bolaise and with Townsend may take a bit of pressure of him and see the bolasie of old. I like having 2 4.5 keepers for rotations. Only 2 im not sure yet is Mkhitaryan and Negredo. May swap for Mahrez and Wilson.
