The Numbers Game – 2015/16 Review – West Brom

The penultimate team in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are West Brom.

We get our analysis underway by assessing the Baggies team statistics and compare them to the rest of the Premier League and their previous league campaign. We then take a close look at their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources with one eye on the season kick-off in just over two weeks’ time.

The Baggies finished in fourteenth position last time out – just six points clear of the drop zone – after a dire run of form saw them draw four and lose five of their final nine league fixtures.

Pulis’ side struggled for a cutting edge and managed to find the net on just 34 occasions – down on their 38 goals from 2014/15 and a tally superior only to basement-dwellers Villa.

Personally think you need a second decent striker like lukaku or benteke if he moves. Would downgrade Barkley and / or Ibe to facilitate

don't need double Boro defense and Valdes may not even be nailed seeing as they're going for Guzan..

      striker price balance isn't great

    Sunderland 3⃣️-2⃣️ Dijon match report

⭐ players: Kaboul, Kone, Borini, Khazri, Asoro

    Notes
    - Lens anonymous throughout the game.
    - Rodwell was ok at right-back but I would expect Moyes to strengthen in this area.
    - Centre-backs worked well together throughout the game despite conceding twice.
    - Borini and Khazri were central to most attacks from Sunderland.
    - Asoro put in a great shift and contributed to both goals.

Sunderland 1st half (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Rodwell, Kaboul, Kone, van Aanholt; Cattermole, Kirchhoff; Khazri, Lens, Borini; Asoro

6’’ van Aanholt is hacked down on the left side of the box and wins a freekick that Khazri stands over. He curls it into the near post but the keeper gets down quick to save.
15’’ van Aanholt clears a long ball upfield that turns into a chase between the Dijon defender and Asoro. The defender gets to it first but touches a horrible touch that gives it straight to Asoro who finishes superbly into the far corner from just inside the box. Post and in! ⚽
21’’ Good cross in from Rodwell on the right after being found by Lens sees Borini’s effort just hit wide. Offside flag raised anyway.
40’’ Pickford makes his first save after a cross-shot is hit dangerously after van Aanholt gives his marker too much space. ♜
42’’ Rodwell gets a shot away after a scramble in the box from a failed corner but it goes wide.
43’’ Kirchhoff goes down injured (ankle). He’s treated on the sideline and looks set to play on but it remains to be seen if he will start the second half. ☠

Sunderland 1st half (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Rodwell, Kaboul, Kone, van Aanholt; Cattermole, Kirchhoff; Khazri, Lens, Borini; Asoro

52’’ van Aanholt is signalling he needs to come off. Looks like a tweak to his ankle and he is replaced by Tom Robson. ↩️
54’’ Slip by Rodwell as he goes to challenge the Dijon attacker in the box which gives the opposing players acres of space to finish tidily for the equaliser despite Pickford’s efforts to keep it out. ⚽
60’’ Borini hits a great ball up that meets Asoro who manages to beat his man. He squares the ball to Khazri who finishes from close range to ut Sunderland back in the lead. ⚽
63’’ Asoro and Rodwell subbed for Watmore and Jones. ↩️
70’’ Robson is beat by his marker who gets a cross in and Bela knocks in the equaliser from close range. ⚽
72’’ Cattermole subbed for Ethan Robson. ↩️
76’’ Penalty for Sunderland after a Watmore cross is handled in the box. Borini takes it and finishes to the bottom left to put Sunderland back into the lead. ⚽
    80’’ Khazri subbed for N’Zogbia. ↩️
83’’ Borini tries a very good effort on the volley but it goes just over the bar.

    Greetings from North Carolina.

    Gomes, Foster
    Azpi, Taylor, Friend, Gabriel, Shaw
4.5, 5.5, Alli, De Bruyne. Ayew
    Giroud, Carroll, Aguero

Can I have a quick rating please.

Thoughts on Batshuayi or Lukaku over Girou?
Thinking Leko and Gradel as cheap mids. See who arises at 5.5.

Giroud may not start first game after a long summer at Euro 2016 so I would start with Lukaku or Batsh. I have also got Leko and Gradel as well, think they could be a couple of really exciting wingers this year.

    Option A (3-4-3):

    KDB, Mahrez, Ayew, Gradel, Capoue
    Aguero, Zlatan, Gray

    Or, Option B (3-5-2):

    KDB, Hazard, Mahrez, Ayew, Gradel
    Aguero Gray (Carroll)

Defensively both teams are of the same value comprising of Middlesbrough, Palace and WBA cover.

If Pogba comes to United and plays LCM, that nails Martial in my team. Interplay with Ibra up top, Pogba behind, and a more-than-capable LB in Shaw as opposed to a different one every half like he endured under LVG. Not to mention he managed a tidy 11 goals and 4 assists in 32 appearances in the offensively blunted system of last season at the age of 19/20.

That he doesn't want to go to United. He's been directly quoted as still loving us. He may also like Real but there's no connection there.

Also the Real piece about Zidane's comments are referring to them training in the US, nothing to do with Pogba.

He considers United his first family. I think he wants to join us but also likes Real. According to LaStampa (highly reliable), the deal is done and now they're just discussing the payment structure.

Saints front players in the first half:
    ----- Hojbjerg ----
    -- Clasie - Reed --
    ------- Tadic -------
    -- Austin - JRod --

    In the second half:
    ------- Romeu ------
    - Hojbjerg - JWP -
    ------- Tadic -------
    - Redmond - JRod -

Tadic still looks the best pick. Too much competition between Austin, Rodriguez, Redmond and Long.

Redmond played at no. 10 in the last game so I don't think Tadic has that spot wrapped up just yet.

True but I don't expect us to have signed Redmond to bench him every game. No. 10 is the area that would best suit him, in Puel's system.

Also worth noting that Redmond scored 2 goals from that position, albeit against weak opposition.

I know but the rehabilitation process takes a lot of time. And JRod's was quite severe. There are players who recover after years of physiotherapy and I hope JRod is one of them.

It's a fluid diamond. Sometimes looks more like 4-3-3. Austin for me.

Second half one is arguably the best front six for me, with one of Long/Austin in for Rodriguez of course.

I think Austin and Redmond might work quite well but that seems harsh on Long. I'd probably squeeze Clasie in one way or another - he was really starting to find his feet towards the end of last season.

RMT please. Open to suggestions / comments.

    Foster
    Fuchs / Dann / Walker / Friend
    Mahrez / Ayew / Eriksen / Mkh
    Aguero / Kane

    Bench: Janku, 4.0, Fletcher, 4.5
    ITB = Egg !

All starting 11 look nailed on plus fletcher on bench for contingency. In few weeks can find out suitable 4.0 and/or 4.5m playing subs.

Question: Should I downgrade defence for Fletcher --> Townsend ?

If Defoe starts the front 3 will probably look. Khazri - Defoe - Borini
If Defoe is rested cos of fatigue borini may be pushed up front with wantmore on the right. Jermaine lens will also look to have a say in things

So most FFS managers think that pre-season form isn't always the best 'basis on which to pick a player' and 'form doesn't go into the real league most of the time'.

Many managers on here believe that 'nailed on-ness' and 'fitness' are more likely to translate in to future FPL points. And only the most nailed(with the exemption of a couple of differentials) and the fittest should be in our teams.

If this is true, is it possible to comment on the players fitness levels in future Scout Notes?
We already get good updates on game time during pre season.

    Thanks.
