Captains

The Captain Poll – Gameweek 1

This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

Payet won't play in gw1, kane won't get you many attacking points either

good point on Payet. But he doesn't have Kane? But why won't he get points.. still thinking he's worthless without Dembele?

I dont like Kante as a 4th mid, I would change that and also not have 2 4m defenders

Thanks so much for the feedback.

It's interesting about Kante, isn't it? For 5m, In my opinion he appears to be quite good value. I have a funny feeling he's going to get a couple of goals, or at least more assists, this season.

I think Conte will use him more aggressively than Ranieri, and he definitely has the fitness to become more of a box to box player. It's a punt I'm willing to take given Chelsea's relatively comfortable start.

What would you suggest I change with the defence? Drop Morgan for a 4.5 and boost one of the 4s to a 4.5?

        Thanks again!

I would change Morgan to Hernandez and upgrade one of the 4m. It's only a short term fix, but its a fix all the same!

Always ifs when rating a team , personal prefs etc.
Would lose Kante for a more attacking mid.
Prefer Vardy to Ibra , but that's subjective
Think Payet may need a few games to hit his straps
      Otherwise 7/10

        Cheers for your feedback mate!

The Payet point seems to be a recurring one amongst the feedback, so yeah I think I will swap him out (reluctantly though, as he is a class act).

I've gone for David Silva instead of Payet. Another player I think is a class act, and one I deeply admire. With slight injury doubts over De Bruyne, I think Silva is pretty good value for 9.

Having 0.5 to play around with is also useful after GW1, in case any players quickly increase in value before I can transfer them in.

Kante isn't a good FPL asset.

If I were you I'd downgrade Hazard and upgrade the 4th midfielder. I think two 7.5m midfielders will get you more points than Hazard and Kante. There are some great options...

      Walcott / Ayew / Siggy / Tadic / Oscar

7/10 for me. Payet, Deulofeu and Kante are all uncertain for various reasons. Payet probably won't play GW1, Deulofeu often flatters to deceive and is up against Tottenham, while Kante simply won't earn any points - holding midfielders are a waste of a midfield slot in fantasy football unless they regularly chip in with headed goals, which he doesn't. You'd never pick Matic at Chelsea even tho he's 5.5 too, so don't be tempted by Kante.

        Thanks for your feedback mate.

As I've said further up in the thread, I do have a funny feeling about Kante, and want to see how Conte uses him (hehe Kante-Conte... I am so easily amused...)

I've always liked how Deulofeu looks when he plays, and I have a real feeling Koeman could squeeze something out of him. His only other managers in the Prem have been Moyes and Martinez so I'm really interested to see how he reacts to Koeman. Everyone knows that Deulofeu is a real talent, and I'm willing to give him a couple of games I think.

    Tadic--Hazard--Lamela--Firmino--Capoue
    Gray----------------Kun-------------------Zlatan

    4.5 (4.0)

He absolutely can't shoot though. Also prone to yellows and reds. I agree that it makes little difference as ideally you'll start neither of them but I don't see the harm in picking the obviously better player.

Quick questions if u have the time

    1. Rather to have DDG or valencia/shaw?

    2. Morgan or there is a better 5.0m? Who?

    3. Few good 4.5m def. Best 3 in ur opinion.

    4. Your 4.5m mid?

Valencia/Shaw as cheaper keepers usually score more with shot saves etc.

Probably not, Stones if he moves to City

Theres plenty so personal preference, I've gone Hernandez, Van Hoorn and Byram

      Capoue

B, as you need Aguero, especially if you are only going with one premium striker. I'd downgrade KDB though and upgrade Parades/Smith and Fischer.

Cheers buddy, that's what i was thinking from the start Aguero has to be a lock!

Don't like either team tbh. Too much imbalance especially in defence

    BENTEKE TOO PRICEY?

With Liverpool wanting to recoup the £32.5m they paid for Christian Benteke, are they going to find many suitors?

Here's what Besiktas president Fikret Orman told a media conference today: “Benteke is a very important player. Do we want to see him in our team? (Yes) We want him but he is a player who was transfered (to Liverpool) with very high costs.

"Well.. It doesn’t look like an easy transfer. There are also some number of different players we are interested in. We will have a look...”

This is my dilemma. Do we have a clear winner between these options?
    A) Baines (3rd def) + Capoue fodder
    B) Souaré + Gradel/Feghouli (5th mid)

if not for money why would pogba leave juv for utd right now?

unless juv really want to sell if not leaving a team which is capable of winning the ucl for a team who is not even in the competition is a downgrade for me

Think Juve had to sell him after splashing all that cash on Higuain.

Man Utd is clearly a better carerr move long term than staying at Juve

Not bad. Avoid Iwobi, Costa. Not personally sold on Townsend and Terry can become Cahill

Not sure Siggy will be featured in wk 1. I like the Walcott pick for the early going, anyway.

      1. Kane or Ibra

      2. (A) Kane & Routledge or (B) Gray and Eriksen (+ 1m to invest in def)

I have never tinkered with a GW1 team this much - really unsure on a lot of my pics but somehow quietly pleased with them at the same time. Anyone able to help convince me on this? Midfield is where I've switched the most:

    Foster
    Shaw - Valencia - Evans - Friend
    Haz - Alli - Tadic -
    Gray - Ibra- Kun(c)

    Subs:Jakupovic - Ibe - Fletcher - Paredes

    0.0 ITB

It's the 4th mid I'm struggling with. Ibe? Feghouli? Gradel? Double up on Soton and get Redmond? Or Gaston? ARRRGGGHHH!
