The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Sunday

A stunning performance from Philippe Coutinho at the Emirates overshadows even Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Premier League debut as Liverpool hit four in Arsenal’s backyard. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches.

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We thought the debate on Jurgen Klopp’s midfield was settled. However, Coutinho’s display at the Emirates already threatens to change matters and have us reconsider Roberto Firmino as our top target.

Coutinho simply sparkled, fetching a pair of breathtaking goals and is likely to end the Gameweek as the leading points scorer. He is already officially first transfer bandwagon having soared to the top of the “transfers in” ranks.

Worryingly, he limped off in the second-half having dealt the damage, although Jurgen Klopp has since confirmed that his withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a hamstring injury.

We’ve always had concerns on Coutinho’s consistency as an FPL asset but should he profit from the trip to Burnlye in Gameweek 2, he will already become difficult to ignore.

Sadio Mane
Mane also came out of the Arsenal victory with plaudits. A superb solo effort capped an effervescent performance and offered a reminder of his explosive qualities. Mane looked at home in Klopp’s line-up on the right of a front three and, like Coutinho, if he delivers again at Burnley, his stock will close further on Firmino.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
It was almost inevitable that Ibrahimovic would score on his Premier League debut. Again, the Swede often dropped deep at Bournemouth and both his attempts on goal were from outside the box. That won’t bother his 42% ownership or the 21% who handed him the Gameweek captaincy.

Wayne Rooney
While Ibrahimovic will get more attention, the United skipper emerged from the Vitality Stadium with a goal in a busy display of some promise. We’re not convinced just yet but, based on these early signs, it’s possible that Rooney could outperform his 9.0 price tag.

Anthony Martial
Another stand-out performer in Jose Mourinho’s ranks – Martial looked sharp and positive on the left-flank and came out with two assists and a share of the maximum bonus. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan used from the bench once again, if Paul Pogba’s raids are curtailed by a role in the double pivot, Martial could yet be the most attractive of the United midfield.

Antonio Valencia
Once again the Ecuadorian offered far more going forward than Luke Shaw on the opposite flank, confirming that he is our favoured route into the United backline. Eric Bailly was impressive but Valencia’s quality going forward is enough to keep him firmly in place at the top of of Watchlist, despite United’s failure to earn a shut-out.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Let’s not panic. However, there’s no doubt that the performances of Coutinho and Mane took a nibble out of our confidence in Firmino. It’s possible that we have to live with every Liverpool midfield asset taking turns to come to the fore. However, if Klopp’s side win at Burnley in Gameweek 2, Firmino really needs to get amongst the points to restore our faith.

The Arsenal Defence
The injury troubles were well publicised and we expected today’s encounter to test Arsenal’s resolve. However, the nature of the Liverpool performance indicated that it could take several weeks for Arsene Wenger to restore stability. Hector Bellerin at 6.5 and with 30% ownership already looks a liability.

Alberto Moreno
If it wasn’t clear that James Milner was Klopp’s first choice at left-back heading into today’s game, Moreno’s performance at Arsenal fixed that. The Spaniard’s desperate lunge on Theo Walcott went unpunished when the penalty was saved but, just a minute later, Moreno was exposed for Arsenal’s opener. He is surely destined for cameo roles this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Gutted with Firmino not bagging something.

Thinking of Morgan to Willians this week to avoid any potential drops. But might wait until next week.

Cheers KoL....the only positive about the Coutinho rise is that Firminho is 0.5m more so it's an easier switch if needs be down the line than trying to go the other way....

Kingsley stealing Amats (YC) transfers is a bit annoying....

Deulofeu is a bit of a weird one for me.

People say he played well but he was subbed off after 60 mins.

Are we sure he won't be benched for Lukaku?

If lukaku goes Ronald will have a replacement other than Kone. My personal view he won't play Barkley, Miralles, Del Boy normally when Bolasie is there for a while. Kevin and Del are a waste of defensive space and he has already said Barkley must be more consistent.
I can say this Lukaku is not a sulker the press have people to believe. He is calculating and mercenary though.

Forgot to say Ronald will play a back 3 with Baines and Coleman as wingbacks. Oviedo and Lennon as cover. Mccarthy will be nailed and Besic will get more gametime, Thay puts into question wide playing forwards.

I made the same error because of pre season form and the boy is class. It was a 6.5 punt for me. A bit like Ronald using Tadic when all thought he was nailed. I believe Bolasie will be an absolute gem after a month or so.

More chance that Valencia is nailed now. From Manchester evening news:

"Meanwhile, Matteo Darmian's United career could be set for a premature end.

The right-back only joined last summer from Torino but he looks to have been squeezed out of the first-team picture by new manager Jose Mourinho.

Darmian wasn't even in the 18-man squad that travelled to Bournemouth on Saturday, leading to speculation in Italy that he is set to for a return to his homeland,

Various Italian media outlets are reporting that Napoli are frontrunners to sign him."

Just checked out Fantasy Football Fix for the first time this season. Its absolute rubbish. Suggesting for me to take out barkley and put in ayew and then captain him, over the likes of Aguero and Ibra. It is also telling me to play Morgan (ARS), Friend (sun) and Evans (EVE) over Williams (wba).

I think I need a Man Utd attacker, even if it is for the sake of blocking opponents. Ibra is very highly owned so is the most worrying of the 3 options. Having said this... Martial/Rooney had more shots in the box etc than him.

It's also hard - for me - to work out who benefits/loses out in terms of FPL points when Pogba rolls up... With that in mind, would you do any of the following:

    a) Alli to Martial
    b) Vardy to Rooney
    c) Alli + Vardy to Lamela + Ibra (-4)

I'm keen to see Pogba play first. The dynamics of the team will change and I still envisage a change to more of a 433 or 4141 type formation. In saying that Rooney was playing up front with Ibra imo. It was more like a 442 against Bournemouth.

they may well be, but he manages to score enough for an outgunned Venezuela team against better South American teams. No reason why he won't do the same in the PL. He did alright last year too

I tripled (c) Caroll in gw37 (9pts) so I have hate and venom still running through my blood when I see his name mentioned....

      Yeah, think I'm doing that.

Not overly keen on losing Vardy with the next 3 fixtures (perfect for counter-attacking) but I think no pens makes me lean towards Ibra this week. The strongest captaincy option too imo

I guess this depends if you feel Leicester will bounce back home to Arsenal.
It's not like Vardy didn't have chances, just rusty.
I'm also looking at fixtures beyond GW2 which looks better for united.

Ibra scored a goal that most keepers would've stopped. Vardy should've had a double but for rustiness

This Firminho to Coutinho is madness.

I am pretty sure it was GW1 last year that Coutinho bagged and then did nothing for ages.

Firminho is way more consistent- just unlucky yesterday

Slow start as always but no need to wildcard.

Thinking Vardy to Ibra and Firminio to Coutinho just to catch price rises and start to build team value that will be important later on.

Decent 1st week with 52 and Hazard to play. Worried about not owning Ibra - would you do any changes to this squad or would you save?

    De Gea - Heaton
    Valencia - Stone - VVD - Dawson - Massuaku
    Hazard - Firminho - Lamela - Redmond - Townsend
    Gray - Negredo - Kun

Should I stick with Gray/Townsend/Firminho for next GW at least?

      Sensible.
Deulofeu usually don't play the full 90.
Signs points towards Vardy having a blast vs Arsenal, so just hold the course. Gonna bounce back

having Ibra really makes me worry about my midfield. At least if Haz blanks over the next few weeks I shud b able to get coutinho or who ever is in form.
