Scout Report – Simone Zaza

Following injuries to Andy Carroll and Andre Ayew, West Ham manager Slaven Bilic strengthened his attacking options with the acquisition of Juventus striker Simone Zaza late last week. The Italian international joins on a season-long loan for an initial €5 million, with a view to a permanent transfer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the 25-year-old is keen to improve over the next nine months after struggling to nail down a regular role with the Serie A side:

“I want to thank everyone for welcoming me including the fans and everyone at the club. I wanted to start a new experience and I feel this is the right choice for me… I want to become a better player and I know I can do that at West Ham. Unfortunately we could not qualify for the Europa League, but I am hoping I can help the club do that next season.”

The History

Born in Policoro, Italy, Zaza began his youth career at Stella Azzurra Bernalda and Valdera before being scouted by Serie A side Atalanta, whom he signed with at the age of 15.

He made his professional debut for Atalanta against Reggina in April 2009, but would only be granted two further league appearances for the club before joining Sampdoria in July 2010.

Zaza failed to establish himself at Sampdoria, though, and was sent out on loan three times over the following four seasons. He played four matches for Serie B outfit Juve Stabia in 2011/12, scoring one goal, before joining Viareggio, a third tier side, on loan during the second half of the 2011/12 campaign, where he netted 11 times in 18 matches.

The following season saw Zaza take in another loan spell, this time with Serie B side Ascoli, where he again impressed, scoring 18 goals and adding four assists from 36 appearances.

Having played just twice for Sampdoria over three years, Zaza moved to Sassuolo in the summer of 2013. He scored nine goals and registered two assists in 33 Serie A matches, and improved on that record the following campaign, totalling 11 goals and three assists in 31 matches.

Last summer, Zaza joined Juventus but struggled for pitch time with the Italian champions. Handed only five starts (and 14 sub appearances) he registered a respectable five goals and an assist in just 663 minutes.

Capped by Italy at Under 16, Under 17 and Under 19 levels, totalling six appearances, Zaza made his senior debut against Holland in September 2014. He featured three times for the Azzurri during Euro 2016 and has so far played 14 times for his country, scoring once and providing three assists.

The Prospects

Given the afore-mentioned injuries to Carroll and Ayew, it’s expected that Zaza will be West Ham’s first choice striker for the time being – ahead of Jonathan Calleri, Enner Valencia and Ashley Fletcher in the pecking order.

The Italian could be a little short of match fitness having failed to feature for Juve during their first two league matches, but he did register some minutes in pre-season, including an appearance against the Hammers, where he scored the winning goal in a 3-2 win for the Serie A champions.

It’s expected that the new boy will come in at 7.0 or 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and with the Hammers likely to be boosted by the return of the hugely influential Dimitri Payet after the international break, Zaza should be on the end of a decent supply line, which also includes the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Michail Antonio and Sofiane Feghouli, another who should return to full fitness over the next couple of weeks.

Zaza impressively averaged a goal attempt every 22.1 minutes last season, which was better than both Carroll (27.6) and Ayew (45.4), although the later did play on the right wing in the majority of his appearances whilst playing for Swansea.

The Italian is not really a target man, though, winning just 17 of his 35 aerial duels last season, relying instead on his clever movement and calmness in front of goal. Zaza isn’t blessed with exceptional pace, though, so it appears he will be heavily reliant on chances being created for him.

Bearing in mind that most Fantasy managers are currently holding Sergio Aguero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front, Zaza may well turn out to be a viable option in that crucial mid-price bracket if he can take advantage of some promising fixtures to follow. Obviously a potential ban for Aguero would force a reassessment.

West Ham are braced for four favourable home clashes (WAT, wba, SOT, MID, cpl, SUN) in the next six Gameweeks, promoting the appeal of an attack that found the net 65 times last term.

Although a fit-again Payet looks the Hammers’ likeliest source of returns, Zaza – if he can up his match sharpness over the international break – has the potential to hit the ground running.

If you’re eyeing up the West Ham options, Antonio – at 7.0 – is also one to monitor after taking his tally to two goals in as many matches with a weekend header away to City. The downside, however, is that the versatile former Forest man is just as likely to be fielded in defence, judging by Bilic’s team sheets, though a move to the attacking midfield three could yet see him emerge as one of the best mid-price options in the centre of the park.

    A) Benteke, Lamela, Capoue & Jakup
    B) Rondon (or another 6.5m striker), Coutinho, Barry & 4.5M keeper

Basically wanted to get Firmino in but the 0.2 on top of Coutinho would have meant a 4.3m keeper which isn't possible.

What you think? I feel like not owning a Liv mid from GW6+ could be a mistake. Cheers!

Just mulling the same thing myself..

I have 2 FTs and am doing:

      Redmond, tadic, Aguero -->
      Inheanacho sterling Sanchez.

good. i just think that planning ahead in order to get Aguero back is too much hassle. If it was confirmed that he was out for 2/3 months+ then that would be different.

At least you have 2 FTs. how come you had 2 soton players?
sterling is enough i reckon - he may even be pushed forward as a striker.

Ha, yeah... As Redmond was OOP I thought he would be a good shout along side tadic who has great stats. Hasn't worked out so I'm moving on.

In also tempted to just do Aguero + tadic ---> Sanchez + Lukaku.

          Lukaku is unbearable though.

What does your team look like at the moment?

So, what does everyone think of:

Thinking very much about Wild Card.

    Current Rank: 40k

    Heaton / Jakupovic

    Monreal / Shaw / Walker / Friend / Robertson

    Zaha / Hazard / Sanchez / Couthino / Leko

    Kun / Gray / Hernandez

    to

    Heaton / Jakupovic

    McAuley / Shaw / Collins / Friend / Kingsley

    Ozil / Hazard / Sanchez / Couthino / Sterling

    Negredo / Costa / Diomande

Doable, especially if Kun gets banned.

Considering a WC on this lot:

    Adrian Mandanda
    Stones Azpi Friend Kaboul Lowton
    Hazard Townsend Fletcher Lamela Redmond
    Aguero Rondon Ibra

would get rid of friend, Kaboul, possibly Stone, Townsend, Fletcher, Lamela, Rondon, and Kun (depending on ban)

    Seem WC worthy?

I'm waiting until after international break to be more sure on injuries and likely starts for players coming before the transfer deadline.

The only reason to do it now is to avoid price rises/drops but I reckon for every player I want who will rise, I have a play who will also rise, thus net affect of zero.

With Arsenal open to a loan move for Jack Wilshere, we understand the midfielder is considering every option, including moves in England and other clubs in Europe.

A formal offer is yet to be made by another club and talks are likely to continue on Deadline Day.

However, West Ham are trying sign him on loan as they are not looking at strengthening the midfield.

Sky Sports News HQ understands Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho has been told it’s in his best interest to move to a loan club for the sake of his club and international career.

Although the player is highly rated by Jurgen Klopp, the manager believes Sakho needs to get game time, while his opportunities at Liverpool will be limited.

The club have already accepted one loan offer from Stoke, but the player turned the move down.

It’s understood Klopp still expects Sakho to have a big future at Liverpool, but want him to spend the season playing regular football at a top flight club.

Easily. But I wonder whether Klopp isn't gambling a bit much if he thinks he can secure a top-4 spot without his best players. Of course Sakho will miss the early season anyway, but the season is long even without European football.

The general consensus for Aguero replacements seems to be one of: Lukaku, Benteke, Vardy, Kane or Costa (assuming you've already got Ibra).

I've been looking at who these will play over GWs 4&5 and how many they've conceded so far. I know this is a bit of a crass way to look at things after just 3 weeks but it's a start to helping me make up my mind.

    Opponent Conceded GWs 4&5
    Sunderland 5 Eve, Spurs
    Boro 2 Eve, Palace
    Stoke 6 Spurs, Palace
    Liverpool 6 Chels, Leicester
    Swan 4 Chels
    Burnley 4 Leicester

if -0.3 does happen, we purchased him at 13.0 and will buy him at 12.9...we will earn 0.1..

Yes doesn't really seem worth it from a purely TV perspective. Need to weigh up the points perspective now

Nah, not many games missed and would need the best part of 70k sales per point dropped and he is not going to be dumped by that many

i have been toying with a very different WC team - no kun, no Ibra, super strong midfield - what do you think?

    Foster, Heaton
    Valencia, Baines, Jaanmat, Kone, Amat
    Hazard, Sanchez, Payet, Firmino, Capoue
    Lukaku, Benteke, Defoe

If don't pick Kun/Ibra I ll definitely have at least one 20 goal striker. Costa, Vardy, Kane once they hit form are the ones I ll be looking at.

Lukaku might score 15 goals, but not sure about the other two.

    Time to WC guys?

    DDG Jaku

    Shaw Walker McAuley Souare PVA

    Hazard Martial Sterling Mirallas Xhaka

    Gray Long Aguero

I am surprisingly leading my mini league. I am thinking to WC. Any suggestion or ideas folks? Need help. Thanks.

thoughts on this Aguero-less WC side would be very welcome please! 🙂

    Heaton Pickford
    Friend Amat Stones Valencia Evans
    Fletcher Hazard Ozil Lallana Sterling
    Ibra Hernandez Lukaku

2.1 ITB to do Sterling-Kaku to Kun-Bolasie whenever Aguero is ready to return.

Lallana is an odd pick, I'd go Antonio or Lamela.

You're right. I'll keep Lamela if he doesn't get banned as well! Antonio is a shout. Cheers!

Don't really know what I'm doing. Suggestions?

    Foster, Heaton;

    Stones, Valencia, Morgan, Friend, Amat;

    Hazard, Tadic, Lamela, Bolasie, Capoue;

    Aguero, Zlatan, Gray;

Thinking of WCing to get in some Arsenal players...

If Aguero, Lamela and Gray get bans you definitely have to.
