Moving Target

Moving Target – Loic Remy

Having already acquired Christian Benteke in this transfer window, Crystal Palace further bolstered their striking options with the signing of Chelsea forward Loic Remy on a season-long loan.

The 29-year-old will once again link up with his former manager at Newcastle Alan Pardew, and speaking to the club’s official website, the Palace boss expressed his delight at being able to secure the Frenchman’s services:

“Loic has been a target of mine throughout this transfer window and I’m delighted the deal has been done. I brought him to Newcastle so I know what he is capable of and I am convinced he will be a quality addition to our squad as we evolve. Loic has international and Champions League experience as well as being a Premier League title winner and is the latest example of the high calibre of players we have brought into the club during this transfer window.”

The History

Remy joined Lyon’s youth academy at the age of 12, and progressed all the way to the first-team, making his professional debut against Saint Etienne in October 2006.

With Remy struggling for first-team action at Lyon, he joined Lens on loan in January 2008, producing four goals and two assists in 12 appearances before moving to Nice in the summer of 2008.

Over the next two seasons, Remy thrived as a regular starter, scoring 30 goals and bagging eight assists in 75 appearances in all competitions. He was linked with a move to Stoke, but ended up joining Marseille in August 2010 for a fee of around €15 million.

His two-and-a-half-year spell with the French giants continued to see Remy flourish as one of the leading strikers in Ligue 1, racking up 42 goals and 13 assists in 111 outings for the club.

He was on the move again in January 2013, signing for QPR for around £8 million. He was unable to prevent the club being relegated to the Championship, but did score six goals in 14 Premier League matches.

Remy moved to Newcastle on loan in 2013/14, and continued to impress in the Premier League, scoring 14 goals and grabbing three assists in just 26 matches.

Those performances convinced Chelsea to sign the striker in August 2014, but Remy has struggled for first-team action over the last two seasons, only managing 47 appearances in all competitions, totalling 12 goals and three assists.

Having scored five goals in 15 matches at Under 20 and Under 21 levels, Remy was afforded a senior debut for France in a 1-0 defeat to Nigeria in June 2009. He has made 31 appearances for his country, scoring seven goals.

The Prospects

While club-record Benteke looks set to be the centrepiece of the Palace attack this season, it was clear Pardew needed to add further goals to his side.

The Eagles scored just 39 times last season, ranking them as the joint-third lowest scorers, and have netted only once in the first three Gameweeks.

Pardew interestingly switched from his usual 4-2-3-1 formation to a 4-4-2 on Benteke’s league debut against Bournemouth on Saturday, with the Belgian playing alongside Connor Wickham in attack. Should Pardew look to favour the latter system, Remy could compliment Benteke perfectly, with the France international’s pace and dynamism in contrast to Benteke’s strength, aerial ability and hold up play.

Remy is a versatile attacker, though, capable of also playing wide on the right, whereas the former Liverpool striker is an out-and-out target man. Should Pardew use the Frenchman on the right wing, Andros Townsend could have some competition for his place, or he may shift over to the left wing, leaving Wilfried Zaha’s spot in doubt.

Certainly, if Pardew keep faith in the 4-4-2, we could see the Eagles putting a lot more crosses into the box, as they did last Saturday, which could boost the assist potential of Townsend and Jason Puncheon.

Priced at 6.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Remy could provide excellent value should he be able to secure a regular starting berth, although having had little football over the past few months, it could take him some time to regain full match sharpness.

Coming in at just 1.0 more, Benteke is currently our favoured attacking asset at Selhurst Park, particularly after he revealed he’s determined to take penalty duties off Yohan Cabaye, after the midfielder missed his second successive spot-kick in the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth. The former Newcastle player could also be set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a groin injury whilst on international duty.

Palace’s fixtures in the short-term (mid, STO, sun) are pretty favourable, but with Pardew’s side struggling for form, and both Benteke and Remy short of match fitness, there are no guarantees either player will hit the ground running at their new club. Pardew’s decision to hand Benteke 90 minutes last weekend, though, was an indication that he’s desperate for the new boys to make an impact.

Certainly, Remy’s history under Pardew offers encouragement that the Palace boss can once again get the best out of him. Whether he can better Benteke as a Fantasy prospect remains to be seen.

It really isn't set in stone at the moment and I believe we'll rotate depending on opposition and whether we're playing more to control possession or hit on the counter.

I think it could well be:

      Cech

      Bellerin, Kosc, Mustafi, Monreal

      Cazorla, Xhaka

      Perez, Ozil, Alexis

      Giroud

      Cech

      Bellerin / Mustafi / Koscielny / Monreal

      Xhaka / Cazorla

(Ramsey or Walcott) / Ozil / Sanchez

      (Giroud or Perez)

You'll get a different answer from everyone I reckon. 😛

      I think:

      --------------------Cech
      Bellerin Mustafi Koscielny Monreal
      -------------Ramsey Xhaka
      ---------Sanchez Ozil Iwobi
      --------------------Perez

Maybe Giroud in for Perez, maybe Cazorla in for Iwobi if he can still manage that role, maybe even Welbeck up front of wide, maybe even Alexis up front and Walcott wide.

It's actually impossible to know. Ozil is guaranteed the 10 role, Sanchez is guaranteed to play somewhere, and the back 4 is nailed. Beyond that, it's up in the air.

If cazorla is fit, i can't see him not starting

Sanchez left, perez right and giroud up top is also an option but you're spot on about it being up in the air

I don't think Perez was bought for the right. We have enough options there, and Perez has been given the No.9 shirt. I think 95% of Perez' time will be spent up front.

Cazorla is brilliant, but I don't like the Xhaka-Caz dynamic, but I would play him wide like he did at Malaga and for Arsenal in spells if he can manage it.

agree with the Perez comment, i think i'll pull my hair out if Wenger puts him on the right

i think Cazorla is wasted out wide, and Ramsey is wasted sitting back

I think Xhaka and Cazorla is the best double pivot in the league! Immense. Cazorla is your most important player imho. He makes things tick, he runs the show.

Like I said below, Caz is a playmaker, but so is Xhaka. You don't need 2 imo. Even against Watford, whilst the individual performances by Xhaka and Caz were good, I didn't think the partnership was very effective. When one was on the ball, the other became a little redundant, thus it was almost like attacking with only 10 players.

It also leaves us too open, because Xhaka isn't as good defensively as Coq.

Yeh, I think Xhaka was bought in part with Ramsey in mind.

Xhaka is a DM/playmaker, so you don't need another playmaker next to him, and Ramsey will do more defensively to compensate what we lose with Coq out of the team. With Ramsey playing b2b, we'll effectively have an extra player in attack. That dynamic worked brilliantly with Arteta-Ramsey, and Xhaka is much better than Arteta.

However, it's a massively demanding role, and Ramsey isn't fit enough for it yet. If he's back of the break, I reckon we'll see it after Chelsea.

      Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal

It's going to be very flexible depending on the opponent and form.

    WC

    Heaton

    Valencia - Williams - Masuaku

    Sterling - Ozil - Lanzini - Hazard

    Lukaku - Zlatan - Rondon

    [Foster|Capoue|Amat|BSmith]

    Kun plan, Lukaku/Sterling/1.8m>Kun/Bolasie.

The way I see it once Kun back you can have 3rd / 4th mid as:

Lanzini + Bolasie.... Or a bigger hitter + Capoue. I prefer the latter but it's all personal choice

    RMWCT

    Foster (Pickford)
    Valencia Williams Evans (Amat 4m)
    Haz Ozil Sterling Firmino (Capoue)
    Ibra Lukaku Tekkers

Kaku + Sterling -> Kun + 4.5m (and play Capoue as 4th mid. Can't see anyone else below 6m that appeals enough for me to weaken rest of mid)

Would you downgrade Firmino (I'm a big fan of having some liverpool attack) to Lamela in order to upgrade the defence ?

Aguero can wait til after swa, tot, international break very likely which means you can keep Arsenal mid, get in Liverpool mid and maybe replace Zlatan for Kun further down the line. All speculation and depends on form but we don't need to behave as if Kun needs to come back straight away.

For all of Costa's amazing stats, Lukaku has identical ones in the last 2 games and has created more chances. Granted, he doesn't have form on his side but fixtures are probably slightly easier and he doesn't usually repel bonus points.

I do like Costa's Swansea record though - was one of the reasons I almost started last season with him.

Players stats vs individual teams in different seasons is a bit of a pointless one. Their team changes, the opponents team changes. Any continuity would be purely coincidental.

They shouldn't be taken as gospel but to say they're coicindental is wrong imo. You can see players scoring regularly vs the same sides, and struggling vs other sides. Teams don't change that often or that significantly and players excel vs certain types of players.

IDK. He's a classic price riser, so he might be hard to get back. IMO he is one of the guys that keep scoring no matter who they play. Leicester is listed as a hard fixture, but they haven't been particularly impressive yet. Arsenal hasn't been all that tight at home. IMO the only match with a likely blank for chelsea is ManU. Also who would be replacing him?

Why? A free transfer for a utility player that can play both left back and right back makes sense to me.

In his limited minutes over the past 2 seasons, he has struggled even against very average players.

    WC Team;

    Heaton (Pickford)
    Williams/Evans/Friend (Pieters/Amat)
    Sanchez/Hazard/Sterling/Snodgrass (Capoue)
    Ibra/Kane/Gray
    0.7ITB
... Keeping an eye on the Gray matter (Excuse the science pun)
... Aguero plan Sanchez/Kane(or Ibra dependent on form) ---> Kun/Ozil

According to fplstats, Zlatan has been poised to rise in value every night since Tuesday.
But everytime I look the next morning, his target percentage has been recalculated back into the low 90s.

Lamela and Dembelé being on twice Eriksen's wages at Spurs is a bit silly. They should stop being tight and just put him on par with the top earners. He is one of their top players after all, and 80k a week is not a lot in PL terms.

Considering this WC team, please rate/critic

    Foster, Heaton
    Shaw Williams walker Evans Amat
    Hazard Ozil cazorla lamela capoue
    Ibra Costa Deeney

    - Thinking of downgrading walker
    - is lamela a rotation risk?
    - not sold on Costa or lukaku right now
    - like the look of Watford fixtures but might wait a couple of weeks for him
    - I'll worry about Kun later

    Any obvious changes??
